I would go more for the oil than water. They are just bland with water. Even with different sauces, to me, they still have a watery taste. The Melinda’s sauce that contains Habaneros in it, can explain why it’s more intense. They rank as some very hot peppers. Just keep experimenting with your different sauces and you’ll come up with some great combinations……😁
@ Hi Eddie!! I love the oil too. It’s the texture with the water than just doesn’t rope me in. I don’t mind them though and can eat them. I find sardines in a good oil just don’t need doctored up most of the time! I can just gobble them down the way they are! Thanks for watching!☺️

I have always found their firmness and texture far superior to the King Oscar bristling sardines. They definitely come out of the tin intact more consistently than the King Oscars do.
Yes, I was referring to the polars in water in the rectangle can. I did a review on them. They were super mushy with a pond water taste. I really like the polars in the round can/clear lid too. I have a big stack of them I keep on hand!
For hot sauces, I like Louisiana Hot Sauce for flavour, and Tobasco brand for heat and quality. If you haven't seen a video on making Tobasco, it's worth watching. When reading the label, look at the first is ingredients. One of these will be first: peppers, vinegar or sugar. That will tell you what the sauce is like. Heat, vinegar or sweet.
@SardineExpedition Lately, I've been snacking on Doritos. They get some cheddar on top and then into the oven. I served them with my home made chilli and Walmart Salsa. Sometimes the doritos can be very hot. The Taiwan Garlic ones are my current favorite. On another note, the Spicy Tropical.Fusion seem to be universally hated. In the old days, I used to eat the spiciest of the doritos. Chips are another option to adding spice.
Yay - you're back for the holidays! PS - the inscrutable UA-cam algorithm keeps inexplicably deleting my posts on your previous video, so this is a test post. Also, I finally tried the Brunswick golden smoked herring fillets that I bought a while ago, and wow are they tasty! Just bought a 12 pack from Amazon.
This post showed up!! Yes!! Back and ready to rock into the New Year with canned fishies! 🐟 😁. That’s great you liked the Brunswick!! I just got my Amazon order finally yesterday with more Brunswicks in it! Woohoo! 🥳
@@Christopher-b1p Nope, that makes no difference. My posts are simply gone. Even the channel creator never sees them. I once thought that UA-cam gets messed up if you access it from multiple devices at the same time - like from both a smart phone and a PC - but that doesn't matter either. Whether UA-cam deletes a post or not seems completely random. It's a long standing bug, reported by many over the years.
Well I started watching your beautiful hands opening can after can of sardines a week ago, and this weekend I bought sardines for the first time in years. Chicken of the sea lightly smoked vs kroger in soybean oil. Chicken of the sea sea hand (mine not so beautiful) down. Thank you and the ever patient Sir Winston.
Melinda’s has a “liquid spice rack” of 12, 2oz bottles of various hot sauces. Bought a bunch for Christmas gifts. Melinda’s is good stuff. You should try Puckerbutt Extra Mean Green, their hot sauces will expose you to a whole new dimension of heat🤣
Just had a new to me salsa yesterday. Good and Gather mango habanero. I wanted to eat the whole jar but holiday dinner wasn't served yet. Supposedly from target
@SardineExpedition yeah I didn't see the jar it might have been something else and habanero. All I know is i loved it and will be going to target today. Lol
I wanted to make a recommendation that you expand of your reviews to include hot sauces. Especially the many lesser known bottled hot sauces that are readily available at grocery stores. Minimum heat should be Habanero and work up the pepper hot scale from there. Honestly, I never thought sardines that are pre-flavored with peppers, mustard or hot sauce made sense when all I want is the best sardines and I can dress them up as I see fit. What other sauces besides hot sauces go well with sardines?
One that many have been mentioning lately that I’m going to try are vinegars. So many have mentioned malt vinegar so I’ve got to give that a shot. I like spicy mayo on them too. I ordered a bunch of different mustards because my stores selection is boring and limited. I’ll share those once they arrive!
@@SardineExpedition Malt vinegar was always good and classic with fish (cod) and chips. I bought a bunch of spicy mustards too at a farmers market. I was eating a lot of hot dogs, along with my homemade and homegrown fermented pickles and relish. It adds so much more depth. I do mayo and Chipotle sauce on my corn on the cob instead of butter.
Hi Heather ! enjoyed the video ! You are brave to try the hottest sauce you had today 😂 !! I enjoy sardines in oil way more than water ! Like you i also enjoy different spices and hot sauces to take them up a notch !
Thank you!!! I’m the same and prefer in oil! Trying new sauces and seasonings has been fun!!! So many ways to mix it up depending on your mood and what sounds good!! Thanks again for watching! Appreciate ya!😁
Riga Gold Smoked Speats in Oil. OMG were these smoky. Delicious. I ate them with a salad, and this guy told me that he loved sprats. The oil is canola which is one of my favorites.
Wow! Good timing. I just had my Pampa soup can sardines in brine (water). Bland. WASHED OUT. I haven’t been buying them in water or nut oils (bad for you). I chili peppered and hot sauced mine. Are ANY great? All seem to be candidates for meal dishes. There’s not enough love in there to be eaten by themselves, or with a bland cracker. Fisherman’s eggs is on my list to try these watery ones on. Kippers, eggs, and buttered toast is a winner. Ask the question, “Do you drink and suck out the remaining liquids left in the sardine tin?” I do. I licked out the Chicken of the Sea Hot Louisiana sauce one. SO Good! But you have Winton there for that I guess.
These were the best brislings in water I’ve had so far. I can eat them and not complain, but they aren’t my fav. I’m just not a fan of the texture in water. I use up good oils in the cans that are leftover, but not the water. Winston loves it. 😁.
@@SardineExpedition Just got back from my meat market store. Got a Reese Fancy Sardine and a Brunswick Boneless butterflied one, both in olive oil. One’s 3.69 and the other is 2.79. Maybe the Brunswick is the more expensive one since they took the bones out. (But that's my calcium for the day!) 😧 Did get some fresh cilantro. They didn’t have parsley. I will try this guy’s Fisherman’s eggs recipe. See “Fisherman's Eggs | Tasty Sardine Low Carb Breakfast |” I have some Pampa’s soup can bits, and green chilies left yet.
The Fisherman's eggs were good. A little hot spicy for me. Maybe a good way to get rid of some bland sardines in water. I don't have any animal sardine disposal units here. Fried Kipper Snacks and eggs is a winner though. ...- NEXT!
@SardineExpedition Thanks! I'm a sardine lover and have done a couple 72 hour sardines only fasts! Not difficult as I do a mainly keto/carnivore diet with plenty of fasting anyway!
@SardineExpedition Yes, just 3 types. Smoked Baltic brislings in Olive oil, kippered filets in water, and standard whole in water. The Baltics were and still are my favorite!
King Oscars are always a good bet. But after comparing water with oil my preference is oil. Definitely going to have to pick up some Melindas Garlic Habeaero and the Black Truffle. Taco Bell hot sauce is pretty decent stuff. I think anyway. But my absolute favorite is Cholula.
@@SardineExpedition Ran into some Melindas Roasted Garlic Habanero last night at one of our local favorite places for Taco Tuesday. Man, that was good! That and Cholula are now going to be my go too! Now to try the Black Truffle.

All the cayenne-based you ingest must do wonders for your cardio - and all the rest. Along with a smidgeon of the right spicy BBQ sauces might satiate, too ?
I hope so! I got back on the treadmill this week making sure I get my 10k steps a day. I was doing that everyday then slacked since November/holidays. I should’ve kept at it!
For eating from the can, sardines in oil for me. The watered ones might be better, drained, in some recipe dish. I like your idea using them in eggs, with the hot sauce, and some cheese. Your channel has got me putting hot sauce into my canned sardines, too; it's especially "necessary" for the boneless, skinless variety.
Hi John! I did like them better cooked with the eggs. That might be the way I’ll do it as I have many cans in water that I keep avoiding because I love the ones in oil! I’m glad you’re liking the hot sauces too! Makes it fun to mix it up!! Thanks for watching!☺️
@@SardineExpedition I did this with the Sea Tales Sardines MSC in olive oil with chili and POW; the flavors were incredible. Thank you for showing me other varieties of sardines!
Have you tried out Italian Bamba sauce? Hot and tasty. Also Portuguese Piri Piri peppers. I just ate a can of Latvian sardines yesterday with bamba sauce and basil pesto. Sounds weird but was very good.
On your recommendation I bought a bottle of the black truffle hot sauce. It is good, not too hot. I did see they have a ghost pepper black truffle variety now.

I know many eat them for health reasons and some add their own oils. Oil is by far my favorite too! These were the best in water so far! I didn’t mind them, they just don’t excite me and I like the firm texture in oil! 😁
I put slap yo mama on chicken thighs and the way I use it most is when I make quesadillas. I spray the tortilla with oil and sprinkle the seasoning on it before I grill it. It’s really good! The Melinda is a hard question because they just make so many and they are all so unique. Can you get a sample pack to try several? The black truffle is my fav, but the green sauce and Mexicana are moving up in my list.
@SardineExpedition I think I can only get separate bottles of Melinda's sauces. Maybe slap.yo mamma would be good with shake and bake and chicken legs or even fries.
I have a new idea for you to try. Open a can of fatty smoked sprats (or other oily fish) and place them in the freezer. Maybe wrap them in plastic wrap.
IMO, you should never can a saltwater fish in fresh water because the fish will absorb the freshwater, causing its cells to swell and compromising its taste, texture, and overall quality due to the difference in salinity between the fish's internal environment and the freshwater; essentially, the fish will become watery and mushy..................and, it is a trick used by industry to make the fish weigh more. Imagine that! Industry cheating its customers? Say it ain't so!
@@SardineExpedition Aaaw c'mon, don't you like hugging somebody who feels mushy? The last girl I hugged felt like a sardine in fresh water....................roflmao!
@@paulbegley1464 You knew it would remind me of a Taco Bell sauce?!?😆😆😁😁. When I was checking Amazon, Melinda has so many sauces I haven’t heard of or seen. Now I want to try them all, but these sample packs are nice and I can throw them in my bag on a hike/hunt!
@SardineExpedition Well we only have two choices for Mexican fast food, Taco Bell and Del Taco's and Taco Bell has more locations so my choices were fairly simple and that's assuming it wasn't some local Mexican restaurant 😂
I used to get sardines in water, but after watching your videos, I buy sardines in EVOO. Also, I could share the water with my border collies and my cat. Too much EVOO gives them "the runs." Those hot sauces sounded good UNTIL you got to the one with Passion Fruit. I can't stand passion fruit! Bartles & James used to make a wine cooler in the 1980s that was based in passion fruit. Nasty stuff. But that's just me. You once said you don't eat canned salmon because you have easy access to fresh salmon where you live. So why are you eating sardines if fresh salmon is easy to get there??? Not criticizing, just curious. THANKS for this video!!
I’m not a fan of the actual passion fruit either, but whatever they did with the combo in that sauce was good!!! Oh my gosh I haven’t heard Barles and James in so long. That is funny! I actually have several cans of salmon to try. I never gravitated towards them because our freezer is stacked with salmon and I just don’t crave it the way I do sardines. There’s just something about sardines that I can’t get enough of! 😁

When reading the label, look at the first is ingredients. One of these will be first: peppers, vinegar or sugar. That will tell you what the sauce is like. Heat, vinegar or sweet.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll see if I can find the video you mentioned! 😁
A few people have mentioned Doritos and sardines before. I still want to try that combo at some point!
@SardineExpedition Doritos + Cheese + Sardines baked? Or baked with cheese and then put a sardine and some salsa on top.
I'm still learning what I like. So far skinless, boneless in oil. Any kind of my favorite hot sauce/condiment is a plus.
That’s the fun part! Keep trying different ones until you find out what you love. So far no two cans that I’ve tried have been alike!
Oil, but occasionally in hot sauce
Another good review video. Adding a Melinda's review was great. Good stuff.
Thank you!!!☺️
Yay - you're back for the holidays!
Woohoo! 🥳
You might have to exit UA-cam and come back to see them
@@Christopher-b1p Nope, that makes no difference.
Hey Sammy!!! Thank you!!☺️. I’m stoked you grabbed some sardines and tried them!!! Winston say hi! 😁
Next week, mustard vs hot sauce...My regards to the ever so charming one himself. Sammy out! @SardineExpedition
Sounds like a good plan!! It’s so fun trying everything to see what you like best!! Keep me posted 🤩

Good winston!!
He’s a good boy!😁
Melinda’s has a “liquid spice rack” of 12, 2oz bottles of various hot sauces. Bought a bunch for Christmas gifts. Melinda’s is good stuff.
You should try Puckerbutt Extra Mean Green, their hot sauces will expose you to a whole new dimension of heat🤣
I want to try that!!! I looked online though and the green is $17?!? Is that correct or is Amazon insane?
@@SardineExpedition 3 comments have disappeared, $17 is way too much.

Sweet!! That’s actually a good gift idea!!! 😁
Just had a new to me salsa yesterday. Good and Gather mango habanero. I wanted to eat the whole jar but holiday dinner wasn't served yet. Supposedly from target
I like mango habanero stuff! Like on chicken wings! 😁. The closest Target is about 4 hours from me.
@SardineExpedition yeah I didn't see the jar it might have been something else and habanero. All I know is i loved it and will be going to target today. Lol
@@SardineExpedition the "trading post" is probably closer to u 😉
Heck yeah! Get you some to have around the house!
I prefer the oil too. I don't want to gross anyone out, but I LOVE oysters in cottonseed oil
I’ve been craving oysters!!!!
Another enjoyable video! I haven’t had sardines in a long time. I will get some.
Thank you!! I’m happy to hear you’ll be having then again!! 😁
I really go for the oil over the water. I like that the hot sauce is in packets.
Me too! Yes, I love having packets to take on the go!
Riga Gold Smoked Speats in Oil. OMG were these smoky. Delicious. I ate them with a salad, and this guy told me that he loved sprats. The oil is canola which is one of my favorites.
I love a good smoked sardine so I’ll probably like them!!
(But that's my calcium for the day!) 😧
Did get some fresh cilantro.
Fried Kipper Snacks and eggs is a winner though.
...- NEXT!
Animal sardine disposal unit😆😆 that’s funny!
Very interesting! Found you through Dr. Boz, another Sardine Queen!

@@ianstuart5660 Hi Ian!!! I’m glad you found me!! Dr Boz has me excited to try a sardine fast soon!!! I appreciate you coming over and watching!! 😁😁
@SardineExpedition
Thanks! I'm a sardine lover and have done a couple 72 hour sardines only fasts!
Not difficult as I do a mainly keto/carnivore diet with plenty of fasting anyway!
Do you recall which sardines you ate during your fast? Did you mix it up?
@SardineExpedition
Yes, just 3 types.
Smoked Baltic brislings in Olive oil, kippered filets in water, and standard whole in water. The Baltics were and still are my favorite!
Are you referring to a brand or just Baltic sardines in general?
Wowsers where did you get the assorted hot sauce packets? I love exotic sauces or atleast ones I have never tried.
I found this at my Walmart. It was right next to the other Melinda hot sauces. I was excited to find it!
I agree on the oil 💯 just due to the texture. I love cholula too! Always have to keep a bottle on hand!
@@SardineExpedition Ran into some Melindas Roasted Garlic Habanero last night at one of our local favorite places for Taco Tuesday. Man, that was good! That and Cholula are now going to be my go too! Now to try the Black Truffle.
@robertheberling3522 that is awesome you got to try it!! My Walmart still has a bin of mini Melinda bottles for $1 and they had a mini black truffle! I just ran out of my Cholula yesterday, so that’s back on the grocery list!! Let me know when you try black truffle! 😁🤩

Hi there and welcome! My channel is pretty new as I just started posting about 6 weeks ago! I haven’t done that yet, but I should at some point as several have asked that question! I’m glad you’re here! More to come soon!😁
@SardineExpedition . Wow, only 6 months, and that many subscribers and views. That's awesome. I think it's great so many of us share an interest these gourmet snacks. Best of luck with the channel!
I had a can of the K.O. Mediterranean Style today. On pork rinds too. My little Doggo got a couple of them in her bowl. She loves Sardines.
Awesome!! Lucky dog! Did you like them with the pork rinds?😃
I would like to try the truffle sauce but I don’t do hot anymore.
I don’t find the black truffle one hot at all, but I know that’s subjective. Sometimes you can find the mini bottles of Melinda’s too. 😁
@WallysPlace66 There's a lady that I met who hunts for truffles with her dog and then makes sauces and sells truffles. Not necessarily hot.

I just can't bring myself to buy sardines in water. Melinda's are great hot sauces. Their Habanero sauces are my favorites!
I understand!!! They are not the same as in olive oil. The texture is the main difference that gets me!
never had smoked before has to be said we don't have a huge variety in UK
@Christopher-b1p yes of course, was talking about sardines 😇
Do you ever shake the tin to wake the flavors up, Heather?

I found Slap Yo Mamma and Melinda's. Which one do you recommend?
For sardines, I love the Melinda’s!! I like slap your mama, but wasn’t crazy about it on sardines at all. I love it on meat though-chicken, beef, etc.
@SardineExpedition Which Melinda's flavours do you recommend. What would I put Slap Your Momma on? Both Re at my local Hot Sauce Store in bottles.
Oh yes. Slap yo mama is great the ways you mentioned!!!

I have a new idea for you to try. Open a can of fatty smoked sprats (or other oily fish) and place them in the freezer. Maybe wrap them in plastic wrap.
What after that?
@SardineExpedition Eat them !!!
It definitely changes the taste and texture drastically!! I just can’t embrace them lol
