Great review! I have often found that price and quality are not always correlated in sardines, finding some of the lower priced sardines as good or better than the higher priced ones. Also, I watch all of your videos twice now: Once to focus on your review, and then again to see the antics of Winston. 😅 I love your channel, everything about it, from the music to the humor. Fun, informative, and very funny. Thank you and best wishes. 💖🐟
You are so awesome!!! Thank you so much!! Makes me happy to hear! You are absolutely right on price and quality not always aligned. I’ll still keep trying everything for you guys though!😁
Had a great football weekend with the guys and because of your channel I decided to have the group try different sardines both in oil and water. It was fun and interestingly nobody liked them in water, some did not like them in soybean oil but everybody liked them in olive oil. And, we all liked the chicken wings.....lol Oh, and my homemade beer or two or three or........yep, Tommy just fell down...lol
@ I'm glad you weren't because there were some off color comments made about former girlfriends etc. It was funny overall and one of the guys had never eaten a canned sardine. He was a newbie to the group, passed the initiation and now a member. All of us are former military and ornery as he**.
I'm not a chef but play one in the kitchen at times and know presentation plays a role in a good meal. The water sardines left something to be desired when first opened. Thank you for the video reviews. I keep up with your reviews, and I am really starting to become a sardine enthusiast. I just picked up a few cans from Wal-Mart, Target, and the local grocery store.
You’re welcome and thank you for watching!! I love that you’re getting into sardines more too!! It’s so fun to try them!! I’m curious which ones you picked up! Let me know if you find a gem! 😁
Pure olive oil means it is refined olive oil as opposed to virgin or extra-virgin olive oil. Non-virgin oil means it was extracted using methods other than physical (i.e. chemical means.)
Gack! Those water-packed things - by looks alone - would earn an express trip to my "bag it and get it outta here" routine. But... good on ya for looking at (what can be) overlooked, truly delicious snacks, and better yet -- ingredient.
I was distracted by your long tattooed Sasquatch Arms...🤣😂🤣😂 Im teasing...Nice review, I've never been a fan of water packed fish...Olive Oil is the def the best....Stay warm and give Winston lots of love ❤.
One of the things I noticed is the large volume of liquid in those cans. With Nuris, the cans are always stuffed to capacity.. I believe 20% is a reasonable estimate for how much more fish you get as a result. That said, thank you very much for the review. It will save me trying the SAs, especially since (thanks to you in large part) I already have at least 50 cans of sardines (and mackerel) in my pantry.
Good point!! Nuris are packed in there!! I definitely wouldn’t go out of my way for these! We shall see how the piri piri ones are, but they have to be great for the price. $5 mediocre sardines is a no go.
Cloverleaf is on sale this week for $1.50 a can. They have either water or soy oil or tomato sauce. The can itself is nice. The olive oil one is $3. They also have new flavours. Smoked Jalepeno and then there's garlic and chives,

Feeling fancy after Walmart trip. Picked up Sea Tales (EVO, EVO w/lemon, red pepper), Season in olive oil, and Polar Brislings in olive oil in the round can w/clear top. So far only had the pepper one and they were good. There was a little red pepper in it but it was kinda flavorless. 🙂
I am so glad I found this channel, have been watching for a while. Hypnotic for some reason, I don't understand it 😐 I am confused by the hypnotic tactics ! ! ! 😉
I just can't do the Sardines in Water. It's kinda like eating them out of the pond. It's just fishy water. LOL. I like Olive Oil. And I like Spices and such. I also find that most sardines I have tried in water, seem "mushier" and are falling apart. I don't know if that's the water doing it, or if they were just packed that way. I have not tried as many brands as you but the ones in water seem to be not as well put together than the ones in oil. It seems the oil helps hold them together. I wonder if anyone else feels the same way?
Yes, that seems to be the general consensus on the water ones!! I keep trying them here and there for the channel as I know many eat them for health reasons so the reviews might help them. They are just a can of sadness to me lol.
Santo Amaro may / may not be better than Santa Bremor, like I had today. Did Santo Amaro say 'Dolphin Safe' Tuna along with the 🐬s included 🤔 ?? So, that's why its $ 5- a can 😅 ! The manufacturer would simply say, 'We think it's pure.' Had Santa Bremor with their 'matjes herring' today. It had an excess, odd oil I had to wash off. 'Lightly salted' to them means 57 % with 3 pieces equalling 6 servings (?). Oh, OK. They may pack their product in Belarus, but in North America, a real connoisseur is not any silly goose ! Oh well then. Heather, onto the next, for you, me, your audience, each.
@SardineExpedition Virgin olive oil. So basically, it has some slight sensory defects, and the acidity is allowed to be higher at 2 %. You can see this on the EU's fact sheet on olive oil, and from the manufacturers website.
While in Wal-Mart this morning, I spotted Goya Sardines packed in tomato sauce. Maybe you'd like to be a guinea pig and try them out so I can determine if I want to eat some myself. I'm kind of leery about canned fish packed in water or in some kind of sauce.
Yup, them’s scales. As to the olive oil, I don’t think the oil itself is watery. Rather, in the preparation some companies let watery fish, rinsed in the process, get canned, others more thoroughly dry, so you end up with a watery oil mix in cheaper cans-not all, but more often.
@@SardineExpedition In fairness, I only spotted a few; some brands are chock full-o-scales. My tolerance for scaliness peters out somewhere around $2/can-producers charging $5 and up need to spend the time getting these babies cleaned up.
@ Honestly I rarely buy Moroccan or Tunisian sardines anymore, because so often so scale-packed. Plus, the producers that don’t thoroughly scale also seem less than thorough with fishing out the giblets, which are also not my favorite things.
Tried some Sea Tales 'dines in spicy tomato - never again. I really had to cover up the metalic taste. Also, I didn't notice at the store, but they used a sunflower oil mixed with the oo = me no like
the sardines in the spring water looked like they were too close to an IED explosion. I like seeing full body sardines not bits and parts that survived a blast.
I do eat the back bone but I never eat sardines whole as I always take out the intestine guts first before I eat them, I also never handle sardines with my bare hands, and I never eat sardines in Soy oil.
As more and more Asian and S.Amercan- Chilean, producers package various small fish and label them generically "sardines" the term becomes diluted. This producer wants customers to know these are real Sardines, and decided to list the species Latin name and described them as European. It would make sense.
Well that was very interesting. Just from the visual the ones in water look awful and the ones in oil looked like they were ripped off in the oil department. I haven’t been able to find any of the Trader Joe’s sardines at all. All in all just by your comment of oh they’re ok is kinda saying pass to me because I agree with you completely ok for five bucks a can is not good enough. Winston approves but probably because he isn’t laying down the money. Your nails look great by the way and thanks for another step down the sardine road. Enjoy your afternoon
I’m glad it was helpful!! Not every sardine has to blow me away, but the price is definitely a factor for sure. Your Trader Joe doesn’t have sardines? That’s funny about Winston and most accurate!! He wouldn’t spend his allowance on these. 😆😆. Thank you for the compliment!
1- olive oil dos not mean verging or extra verging olive oil which have more compounds in them and have the health benefits and aromatics 2- the sardines in oil seam generally superior to the same ones packed in oil 3- if they are not going to be packed in oil they should be packed in sum sort of flavourful liquid like tomato , mustard , curry , lemon and basil etc
I've sworn off of sardines and will stick with mackerel and tuna fillets. I didn't like the brisling and the feral cat wouldn't touch them either so I'm going to see if I can find a human that wants them. Have you ever used a sardine for? They're proud of them online. See you next time. 😁👍
These were basically as close as makes no difference the price of cans of nuri's and there was big gaps in the cans, So if you look at it like that for how much is in the can never mind the quality difference, These are likely more expensive than nuri's sardines pound for pound.
I don't care for them in water from what I have eaten. Also bought the boneless skinless and didn't like them at all. Got more Brunswick today, the round cans.
Yikes, those ones in water are a sad bunch. Reminds me of when pools dry up into shallow puddles, and some fish get caught in them, just prayin for rain!
Sardines in water are like non alcoholic beer .............why bother . Great review ✌️ Peace . P.S. : apparently sardines are the only fish that don't do well in water . 😁
I tried the SA’s in oil a year or so ago and definitely felt they lacked the quality vs. the price point. No wow factor at all and if I were to sum it up with one word…. Booooorrrring! As per the “pure olive oil”…. dubious at best and a lie at the worst. On another note please consider doing a review of canned Alaskan sockeye and/or pink salmon. Salmon burgers are the bestest kine grindz. Mahalo!
A shame to see the water ones so mangled. I wonder if my can will be the same. And though the oil ones certainly looked better, looks like these won't be ones I'd buy again. Too bad. I hope the other 4 flavors turn out be be tastier. I'll have to get some Trader Joe's water packed ones. I used to buy them 4 years ago, but don't remember what they taste like. (PS - I see you followed my side-by-side thought!)
Well..at least the boxes are pretty. LOL Also wondering if you've tried the Aldi's "Deutsche Kuche Herring Fillets in Curry Pineapple Sauce or in Mango Pepper Sauce" I was surprised... one I loved and one I had to actually spit out LOL
The marketing sounds very American. See my comment about possible Baltic sea origin, somewhere below. It is likely an intentionally mislabeled product.
"We support artisanal fishing" probably means that the giant fishing Corporation donates some puny amount of money to the small fisherman community, people fishing from small boats, canoes, etc. "Artisanal fisheries are those that use a relatively low level of technology: small canoes or boats instead of larger, more powerful vessels; no engines or very simple low-power engines; and traditional fishing gear such as spears or hand reels."
We'll I don't know much about olive oil, but I do know the grades are Extra Virgin (best of the first pressing) , Virgin (first pressing), Olive Oil (2nd pressing) and Pure Olive Oil 3rd it 4th pressing with possibly heat and chemical stepped to force additional extraction). After that it's regional and vineyard and varietal stock. There used to be a borrower Olive oil store in Grand Central Terminal that had oils from Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. I loved the Olive Oil from Portugal because it's base flavor was butter and a hint of black pepper. If was one of those Olive oils you just sprinkled some salt on the surface, and took a fresh load of bread, ripping off bits of bread and dipping it in the oil.... I find it sad that today's world, they just use the cheapest oil they can find to make food with, it makes me sad.
Anyone who reads this is going to end up hungry!!!! 😋 buttery oil in black pepper?!?! Sign me up for that!!! The oil situation is beyond frustrating for sure. Especially on the pricier sardines--give me the good oil!!!!!!!
it's likely just plain olive oil, not extra virgin as would be a more prestigious ingredient designation than "pure." cheaper stuff you aren't wasting money on by frying something in, because there isn't much subtle extra virgin aroma to lose. canola is "pure" but that doesn't mean it will contribute flavor or anything luscious to food you marinate in it. on top of that is the reality of olive oil adulteration/counterfeiting, though i'm not sure what the situation is looking like in southern europe for 2024-2025, with so much 100% california stuff back on the market here.
i think " pure olive oil " means it can be a lower quality of oil , definitely not virgin or extra virgin olive oil , still better for you than soybean oil , & the sardines from the mediteranean [ portugal , greece , spain ] are healthier , but cost more than the many brands using sardines from the baltic sea = poland ,sweden ,as the baltic is not a healthy body of water , and can't export many fish , so always read the entire label to know what you are getting.
Europe is a continent, sardines are fish living in the sea...how can you have European Sardines? Portugal is off the coast of the Atlantic. It sounds like an American was writing their marketing, ...maybe they are getting dumbed down in Portugal by African migration, ...or maybe the fish were mislabeled -caught in the Baltic sea and labeled Product of Portugal, Hand-Packed in Portugal. Edit: If I see sardines labeled Portugal, Produced or Product of Portugal I normally expect them to be from the Atlantic ocean.
There is another possibility, as more and more Asian and S.Amercan- Chilean, producers package various small fish and label them generically "sardines" the term becomes diluted. This producer wants customers to know these are real Sardines, and decided to list the species Latin name and described them as European. It would make sense.

Yummmmy!! I was JUST debating cracking another can of KO mackerel. My order came, so I’ve got a small stash now!!!
@@SardineExpedition !!!!! It was soooo good ;-)
A woman who loves Sardines AND Chilli's be still my beating heart lol
😁😁
'Lightly salted' to them means 57 % with 3 pieces equalling
6 servings (?).
Oh, OK. They may pack their product in Belarus, but in North America, a real connoisseur is not any silly goose !
Oh well then. Heather, onto the next, for you, me, your audience, each.
Winston the sardine Boss.
😎😎 he runs the show! Lol
Fine... I am looking up the olive oil standards now..
Enjoy the rabbit hole!! 😆
@SardineExpedition Virgin olive oil. So basically, it has some slight sensory defects, and the acidity is allowed to be higher at 2 %. You can see this on the EU's fact sheet on olive oil, and from the manufacturers website.
It amazes me most , is where you find these.
@deview123 Amazon. My sardine obsession leads me there 😆
Sublime nails today! You should let Winston have matching nails sometime, although he's always quite dapper in his bandanna :)
😆😆😆. Our nails match when I do the matte black color!
While in Wal-Mart this morning, I spotted Goya Sardines packed in tomato sauce. Maybe you'd like to be a guinea pig and try them out so I can determine if I want to eat some myself. I'm kind of leery about canned fish packed in water or in some kind of sauce.
I’d guinea pig it for sure!! I can’t find Goya near me tho!😤
The Goya aren’t with the other sardines. I found them at Walmart in the “ethnic foods” area with the Latin products.
Hope this helps.
@ Yes, that’s where I was checking. Nothing ☹️
Cool!
Quite pricey for something that's just OK!
😮😮
Right! $10 for that plate of dines! I’d trade for a steak 🥩!
i like this brand with the piri piri
Good to hear!!! I’m excited to give that one a try! Thanks!!😊
Yup, them’s scales. As to the olive oil, I don’t think the oil itself is watery. Rather, in the preparation some companies let watery fish, rinsed in the process, get canned, others more thoroughly dry, so you end up with a watery oil mix in cheaper cans-not all, but more often.
I’m at the reading glasses stage in life so I was blinking and blinking. I’d see them, then I wouldn’t!! Appreciate the second opinion!!
@@SardineExpedition In fairness, I only spotted a few; some brands are chock full-o-scales. My tolerance for scaliness peters out somewhere around $2/can-producers charging $5 and up need to spend the time getting these babies cleaned up.
@deweyd8210 I can definitely agree with that! Do you recall the worst ones you’ve come across in regards to the scales?
@ Honestly I rarely buy Moroccan or Tunisian sardines anymore, because so often so scale-packed. Plus, the producers that don’t thoroughly scale also seem less than thorough with fishing out the giblets, which are also not my favorite things.
Tried some Sea Tales 'dines in spicy tomato - never again. I really had to cover up the metalic taste. Also, I didn't notice at the store, but they used a sunflower oil mixed with the oo = me no like
I’ve only had the KO tomato so far and wasn’t impressed. I’ll avoid that one if it’s metallic. Ick!!! 😤
the sardines in the spring water looked like they were too close to an IED explosion. I like seeing full body sardines not bits and parts that survived a blast.
😆😆😆. It was pretty rough looking indeed. Like the Lego version of sardines.
@@SardineExpedition was there any indication on the box stating, "bits & pieces".
@spankyharland9845 In fine print “this can is a World War survivor”
@@SardineExpedition 🤣🤣🤣
Heather, I wss wondering if you and Winston have always lived in Alaska.
Winston, yes! I’ve lived in Alaska twice. Totally of 10 years. Moved back permanently in 2018.
I do eat the back bone but I never eat sardines whole as I always take out the intestine guts first before I eat them, I also never handle sardines with my bare hands, and I never eat sardines in Soy oil.
Nothing wrong with that!! I think we all end up with our sardine eating style! I try to avoid hands as well. Lots of hand soap on deck. 😆
How many hours to do the tat?
The whole sleeve? Oh man. Let me math. 😆 36 hours. Many 8 hours sessions and I like to just get it done in one swoop.
@SardineExpedition Ouch!
👍
1- olive oil dos not mean verging or extra verging olive oil which have more compounds in them and have the health benefits and aromatics
2- the sardines in oil seam generally superior to the same ones packed in oil
3- if they are not going to be packed in oil they should be packed in sum sort of flavourful liquid like tomato , mustard , curry , lemon and basil etc
You make some good points!! Thank you!
I've sworn off of sardines and will stick with mackerel and tuna fillets. I didn't like the brisling and the feral cat wouldn't touch them either so I'm going to see if I can find a human that wants them. Have you ever used a sardine for? They're proud of them online. See you next time. 😁👍
@@stevexray6253 no more sardines for you!?!?!😳😳😳 Breaking my heart lol. Mackerel is great though!!!
And yes , you have a new sub.
Thank you! I’m happy you’re sticking around!!☺️
These were basically as close as makes no difference the price of cans of nuri's and there was big gaps in the cans,
So if you look at it like that for how much is in the can never mind the quality difference,
These are likely more expensive than nuri's sardines pound for pound.
I would bet you are right!! Nuris pack their cans!!
Great video you just saved me 30$. If you’re not impressed, I’m not buying.✌🏻
I’m glad it was helpful!!! $30 saved to put towards one you love!! 🤩
I don't care for them in water from what I have eaten. Also bought the boneless skinless and didn't like them at all. Got more Brunswick today, the round cans.
Sounds like we have similar taste!
@@SardineExpedition Totally, you've been spot on with my tastes....so far ! 😂
It looks like the b-team is assigned to pack the water fish.
😆😆😆
Yikes, those ones in water are a sad bunch. Reminds me of when pools dry up into shallow puddles, and some fish get caught in them, just prayin for rain!
😆😆😆 A can of tragedy and sorrow.
Sardines in water are like non alcoholic beer .............why bother .
Great review ✌️ Peace .
P.S. : apparently sardines are the only fish that don't do well in water . 😁
It clearly shows lol!! I still give them chances because I know many buy them in water! Thanks for watching, Michael!!
It looks like they had room for at least 1 more pilchard in the oil can.
Yes they did!
Mahalo!
I agree!!!! Oh I’ve got lots of canned salmon from an Alaska cannery I’ll be trying soon!!! Salmon burgers are so good!!!!
I hope the other ones are better too!!! Let me know if you find the TJ sardines and what you think!
Right!!! Pretty box doesn’t cut it though! 😆. I haven’t had those. I’ve got some Aldi sardines to try, but not the herring. Which one did you love lol
@@SardineExpedition I thought I'd love the curry pineapple but...no, lol I did enjoy the mango pepper sauce ..but VERY sweet,.
Are any of your tattoos sardine related?
Not yet, but I have one small space on my sleeve to fit a sardine can 😁
@ I hope you share it with us if you do. 🎣 👀
What the heck is "artisanal fishing"? 😂
The marketing sounds very American. See my comment about possible Baltic sea origin, somewhere below. It is likely an intentionally mislabeled product.
@@sezwo5774 I had a vision of edgy TikTok'ers in over priced fishing garb, casting micro jigs from overloaded sea kayaks.
"We support artisanal fishing" probably means that the giant fishing Corporation donates some puny amount of money to
the small fisherman community, people fishing from small boats, canoes, etc.
I like your tattoos and pink nails
Thank you!!!☺️
I haven’t tried those myself, but I have given up on buying any sardines and water. They’re just not worth it.
Right! You’d think I’d give up already. 🤣
There is something very rare going on in watching a beautiful woman eating sardines. Something not seen every day.
Haha thank you! 😊. I’m definitely different 😁
it's likely just plain olive oil, not extra virgin as would be a more prestigious ingredient designation than "pure." cheaper stuff you aren't wasting money on by frying something in, because there isn't much subtle extra virgin aroma to lose. canola is "pure" but that doesn't mean it will contribute flavor or anything luscious to food you marinate in it. on top of that is the reality of olive oil adulteration/counterfeiting, though i'm not sure what the situation is looking like in southern europe for 2024-2025, with so much 100% california stuff back on the market here.
The oil industry is a rabbit hole that goes on and on. On a sardine from Portugal, I was expecting more for sure. Thank you!!!😊
I’m guessing it means the lowest grade of olive oil!
i think " pure olive oil " means it can be a lower quality of oil , definitely not virgin or extra virgin olive oil , still better for you than soybean oil , & the sardines from the mediteranean [ portugal , greece , spain ] are healthier , but cost more than the many brands using sardines from the baltic sea = poland ,sweden ,as the baltic is not a healthy body of water , and can't export many fish , so always read the entire label to know what you are getting.
Thanks for this!! The more I eat sardines and go through the labels for the videos, the more I learn for sure!
@ i always enjoy your reviews ! more entertaining than most shows on the tele ! [ without commercials ]
@w.l.graves7228 I appreciate that! Thank you.
@w.l.graves7228 thank you I appreciate that!!! ☺️☺️
European sardines? I do not believe it...what did it say in their passports?
I think I'll pass on these. Js
It's artificial smoke that tastes wrong. Not a fan of this brand at all.
@@raven5ism yeah that could’ve been it. I didn’t notice any “smoke flavor”, but that could’ve been what made it taste odd to me.
Sardines in water are gross
They leave a lot to be desired for sure. 😆I keep trying them though because many eat them for health reasons.
See you can judge a book by its cover! Make a note. They look to me like typical EU stuff.
I won’t be buying them😊
More money for other sardines! 🤩
Sorry you had to sit there and eat $5/can sardines that were just meh.
Haha I’d rather do it than have you guys buy it and be disappointed 😁. Onto the next can!!!
Deens in water... yuck.
Haven’t heard of this brand, but the oil ones looked better than the water. One thing about them being just ok, helps ensure a good snack for Winston. Yay. 🫶
He was definitely fine with me not wanting to eat the rest! They didn’t go to waste!! 😁😁
