  • I bought a spool of 100ft Belden 8451 screened wire from Mouser Electronics @ $32.90, and also Amphenol RCA Jack @ $2.14 each. I built 16 pairs of RCA cable for my local Audiophile friends. The cost for a pair of this good sounding RCA cable is less than $12.

    That is a “directional” RCA cable, which is the proper construction. It will be less prone to noise and also have better sonics. Glad to see someone doing it right

    Is there a DIRECTION for the Signal path? Which way does the Signal flow toward the 3 Wire End, or the 2 Wire end?

    Okay i have a question. Im using a DBX 286s mic preamp with TRS into a mackie 402vlz mixer and then connect it via Tapeout with Cinch to my Soundblaster ZXR in my Computer.
    I think i have a grounding issue where interference gets ampliefied through this connection, i dont really have a groundloop, i can create one when i plug the dbx286s in a different outlet tho. My problem is that when my PC which is used for gaming and streaming is under load i get mouse "movement" noise and a hum. If i use an external AD converter to use the optical-in on my Soundcard the issue isnt present, (galvanic isolation hence optical cable) but the chip in the AD convervter sounds like can phone.
    If i build my RCA cables with the method you've used the problem could probably be solved am i right? I think the problem excists because of the different potential of the DBX 286s and the PC. If i now cut the ground on one end it should be gone and safe am i right?

      Hi, unfortunately , I'm not quite sure if it can cure the problem because PC are using switching power supply and also the mother board create a lot of noises. , its not easy to trouble shoot without access to your physical equipments but I think you can try to disconnect everything , and add your equipments one by one and see if you can find the noise source. as for ground loop, your PC has ground connection to wall plug , and if your Mackie has another ground wire on the power plug , then it create a huge ground loop. I don't know which country you are in , so I can't tell much about the wall plug type you have there. hope this help.

      @@AudiophileDIYerthat’s the best piece of advice you could tell someone from a distance. Literally remove all ad-ons and one by one it’s a case of trial and error since the problem could be from so many random issues!
      But hey man I really would like to get you a steak wool solder cleaning sponge 😂 what is that my friend lol!! Between almost every joint I clean the tip of my iron it makes for good practice and solid joints and better heat transfer and less chance of a cold dull solder joint that is prone to cracking over time! And for such small gauge wire it helps to have a temperature regulated iron anything below like 18awg you shouldn’t need more than 600F. And the shielding won’t melt not that yours did but ya 😁 almost 22 years I’ve been doing this professionally

    Good info! Please tell me about the Signal Direction,,,,, Where would the RCA connector with the 3 Wires end.. Shield, Ground, and Positive... be Connected? I'm trying to understand the Direction of the Signal.... I have a Intergraded AMP, which I use in a BRIDGE MODE, with an additional AMP. The Intergraded AMP drive the Left Channel & the bridge AMP drive the RIGHT Channel.... 3 wire RCA Plug goes into the Integrated AMP or what???? Sorta lost on this issue. Any help is appreciated. THANKS

      Hi。Thanks for u r comment。 in 6.39, you can see a snapshot diagram I captured from an audio engineering article. the 3 wires RCA connected to your CD player ,or any signal source, and the 2 wires RCA goes into amplifiers. In simple words, flow direction = from 3 wires to 2 wires.

      @@AudiophileDIYer what would happen if you connect it backwards (from 2 to 3 wires) ?

      @@mgaspy2 If you connect it backwards, it still perform as normal RCA cables, The main reason for the single point grounding is to squeeze the very last bit of S/N ratio performance out from your sound system.

    Why did you cut off, the butter SHIELDING wire at one end, But no the other? It looks like you tied the Silver Shielding wire around the Black grounding wire, and the u Soldered it to the Negative part of the Terminal. Is that what you did or did I miss something? Please let me know,,, THX

    • @AudiophileDIYer
      @AudiophileDIYer  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment . yes , the shielding is only one side, this create one point grounding which can shield more effectively, and the black color wire is for the common side of the wire. I repair a lot of recording equipments and noticed that this method is also widely used in recording equipments . Hope this help.

      So, do that create a Signal FLOW Direction? If so, which direction would the Signal flow?

      @@BWWGL9 You can see a simple diagram at near the end of the video, if you are using this cable between your CD player and amplifier, the braided shield side connect to CD site and unbraided connect to your amplifier. That is why some commercial RCA cable need to mark its flow direction.hope this help.

    • @AudiophileDIYer

      Hi. No, Balanced cable normally used XLR connectors which has 3 pins . The signal in this cable only involved 2 wires, and another extra grounded shield.

      You can’t make a directional, single-point ground cable from standard coax.

    • @MarkSWilliams27
      @MarkSWilliams27 3 місяці тому

      It would not be a balanced cable unless you had balanced connectors. RCA connectors are not "balanced". As I understand it, ground, _, and + are totally separate on balance cables.

    I thumbed it down only because you said "high quality". That is cheap horrible coax, far from quality.

    • @AudiophileDIYer
      @AudiophileDIYer  4 роки тому +2

      @@AudiophileDIYer I don't recommend thin coax with foil braid for audio. The capacitance is to high I feel. And foil although effective is the cheapest form of shield. I've done considerable blind testing on cables over the years. The way the cable is designed will have a difference in sound. Even when the LCR measures the same as another it frequently will have a different sonic character. I use the same configuration as you because "single ended balanced" or directional cables as many call them always sound superior to regular single type coax. The old TV 300 ohm twin feed is the best sounding cable I have used for an RCA interconnection cable. Of course it needs to be kept away from any AC cable due to having no shielding. I use cheap well designed RCA plugs and a twin coax with a braid for customers cables. I also make ones with cable that costs $7 per foot for high end use.

      @@ProfessorMatic Thanks for sharing your opinion. I'm repairing recording equipments for the past 30+ years, thats why I used Belden if I want a pair of cheap cable. In my younger age, 300 ohm line is my favourite cable but I seldom use it now because of I measured high noise than coaxial. I used 300 ohm cable for my 16 ohm high efficiency speaker though. Some people using RG58 and works well too.
