    I think root cause is kettle bottom or lid being out of round. Measure to find the long side of the oval, then bear hug. Works like a charm. I check for smoke leaks and bear hug as needed. Maybe 2-3 times a year. Takes me about 2 minutes to do.

    The weber remains my favorite grill. I still use it. I used it today, as a matter of fact. Mine is about 8 or 9 years old.

    Curious, couldnt you just press the lid down on the grill and then just take it off and let it dry so you dont have to deal with having to pry it off.

    The one thing I like about these kettles is the ability to move the vent around. You are now Limited to put in your vent in one spot.

      @@randyj5833 If you're using the kettle in way where you need the vent to be placed over different parts of the grill, then you're probably not going to be worried about smoke/heat retention for longer cooks at low temps. Anybody who uses a kettle for a low and slow cook like ribs or pork shoulder or brisket is usually going to set their grill up the same way every time, so you can estimate where you're going to want the vents at and then create the seal with that in mind. If you use your grill for other purposes that don't need smoke retention, then rotating the lid around isn't going to hurt the silicone seal you've made here, it just won't fit the exact line that the original seal made when it was cured.

    Enjoyed the video, BUT just a note for anyone with a Pizza Attachment/Kettle Pizza that this may not be a great idea. The grill can get up to 900f+ temp wise and the highest I have ever seen a Food grade high heat silicon rated to is 650f.

      Cedric Segard High-Que gasket is made for extreme heat (Built out of Kevlar or Nomex). With a bit of work it can be used / moulded onto a Kettle.

    I've cooked so much on my kettle that the resin that's built up makes a perfect seal on the Weber lid...
    Just cook more and you're good... Still a nice video.

    Tried this method, glued the top to the bottom. Applied plenty of Vaseline, a lot, but still glued it together I could barely separate the two. Actually damaged the porcelain in the process of separating. Pretty much ruined my grill. Might have to buy a new one. Maybe Saran Wrap might have helped. But I just screwed my grill. Cant say I recommend this method.

      I don't know why people would do this method rather than the tried and true gasket + lavalock smoker seal kit(s). Sad to hear you tried his method and as I assumed many would have, with bad results.

      Just be very careful and use a lot of petroleum jelly! Also I forgot to mention that I kept the vents open to help dry

    Going to try this with my Weber - same style grill, but the dark red colour.
    I think I'll do it a bit differently, though: I'm only going to put the silicone on the inside of vertical rim of the lid which goes over and around the bottom rim. Not sure if that makes sense as I explained it. The lid has some freedom side-to-side when it's on, so this way the silicone will take up that space and hopefully create an airtight seal. This removes the need to keep the lid on while it cures - if I put too little, just add another layer of silicone, if I put too much, the lid can still probably be pressed on, or silicone removed by sanding or trimming. I'm pretty sure this way would also mean it wouldn't matter which way the lid is put on after.
    FWIW, Weber's answer to the smoke escaping is that it's not really an issue, and you should just wait until the carbon build-up creates a natural seal. I can't wait tho, and want full temp control immediately.
    BTW - I have the same knife - Kershaw Leek in black DLC, plain edge. Great EDC folder!

      Freaking love that knife! It was a prime deal one day so I snagged it. It’s my edc as well along with a few other things... haha I like your idea. I realize now that having the silicon cure while the grill is together can be risky. Someone commented that they essentially siliconed their grill shut. This method needs some revision.

    If you are doing low n slow it actually isn’t a bad thing to have smoke come out one side of the lid, put your meet on the leaking side it’ll pull the smoke over your meat

      You can also do that with the damper, rotate the lid so it's above your meat

      Be VERY careful. The comments of this video are riddled with people who glued their grills shut 😂😂😂 maybe use cling wrap on the bottom, Vaseline on top of that, and silicone on the inside of the top. OR Vaseline the bottom, silicone the top, press together and immediately take off to dry

      If you use the RED HI-Temp, it's probably OK. Good for 500F.
      I'm thinking a length of Stove Gasket. Made for wood stoves so the heat would be no problem at all.

    You can squeeze the the lid to make the lid perfectly level. You just have to have a little patience. My Webber kettles are sealed almost air tight. Occasionally I will see smoke escaping from the lid for about a minute. Of one my webers would seal before I unwarped the lids.
    I do like your hack there though. I would have just waited until I straightened out the lid, or bowl first.

    Good idea... but....I believe this material may cause outgassing (the release of a gas that was dissolved, trapped, frozen, absorbed or adsorbed in some materials)

      A smoke leak doesn't has to stop your dreams of wanting to do a BBQ it affects the performance just a little bit. It is not a big deal

    I did exactly like you did and made sure to use gobs of vaseline. Sumbitch is on there like it's welded. Used a razor blade to cut as deep as I could in the rim. No good. I don't know what to do now.

      I had to pry my lid to get it unstuck. I globbed so much Vaseline on the lower rim but that was a waste of time. Now I have rtv stuck to the lid and to the rim. Huge mess and now the lid smokes even worse than before

      More for heat gain if you're aiming for 250 and its windy with an unsealed lid it'll climb over 300 with ease

    I don't see why you need to leave the top on for it to cure. Just put the silicon on, make an impression, and then take it off to cure so you won't have any chance of it sticking together.

    OK, I'm going to try this. We've had a lot of trouble controlling the heat on our Weber Kettle during low and slow cooking. I suspect part of the problem is the leak between the cover and the bottom. My only concern is my remote thermometer cables that have to pass between the top and the bottom. Do I create a channel for them to pass through?

      one of the best suggestions I got was to use plastic wrap on the side not receiving the silicone and then put the Vaseline onto the plastic wrap so that worst case scenario you don't get the grill stuck together. and as for the wires I didn't do any planning for them and just close them into the lid

      BansheeFifteen it’s mostly about heat control and patience;
      if u do a low and slow method cook, try loading about 80-100 coals to one side as far as u can to one side (spaced into a 1/4 moon shape) (unlit))
      start off with bottom damper at about 1/4 open and top vent at about 1/8th open.
      heat up 5-6 coals in a chimney like a weber or similar... get good and hot;
      once hot, put those directly in the middle AND to the slide of grill of the 80-100 coals that are unlit;
      put lid on; wait for temp to stabilize for 15-20 min; adjust top vent in SMALL increments as required after stabilization to go up or down in temp; should hold at 225-240 for 3 to 4.5 hr. low and slow;
      works great;
      adjust for temps needed to start...
      if u need to hold 275-300, start off with 8-10 lit coals (on top of those 80-100 unlit)
      same technique.....

    I did it with a high temp proof gasket bought from Amazon. Guess what, it seals too good so now I don't get enough air comes in so the internal temperature keep dropping even the bottom and top vents fully open.
    I ended up wedging the lid a bit with a piece of wood!! Does anyone find same situation I wonder...

    Why did you put it on the top instead of the bottom like 2 years ago? Thinking to do this with my wsm saran wrap and vasoline I dont want to chip it up like the other dude lol.

      using it on the top keeps it more protected. having it on the bottom it got hit quite a bit.

    I do not see the point to close the lid with the silicon fresh and having the problem of removing the lid later having all that sticky seal to the grill, and as you can see the seal is not even and parts of it were left in the grill when you removed the lid day after. I would suggest for the next time to seal the lid using your fingers and let it dry on its own. The weight of the lid then will be enough to make the seal to fully contact the grill without any lose of silicon, no need to make some sort of silicon mold. My 2 cents.

    When you showed the clip of the lid leaking smoke at the end before you siliconed it, why can you see a little red silicone already on it?

      Two reasons. 1. This is my second time doing a seal so there was already silicone on there. And 2 I forgot to film before the seal so I offset it after I put the seal on just for example.

      Break It Yourself You can also make "protopuddy" by mixing corn starch and silicone together. The corn starch makes it so it's not sticky and you can mold with it. I saw King of Random make it for a seal for a vacuum chamber in one of his videos.

      In my experience when the kettle leaks it’s because the lid and or kettle are out of round. Super easy to correct this. Use your grate as a reference and “bear hug” the grill. Doesn’t take much force to adjust the round.

    Why not just use a felt seal and it holds smoke and heat in perfect. Overall not a good choice to just use a solo chemical seal even if food great alone...felt would have been perfect.

      How would you seal the felt. Know I'm a year late, but,I just got one of these since its just me and the wife. Still wanted to cook for 4-6 if need and veggies. Had big smoker but don't use as much. I remember a friend had one at his apartment for years

      for sure. It's less about temp retention and more about temperature control. I had a lot of air leaking out around the rim which made temperature control an issue for me

    Tell me why a small leak around the rim matters . Your leaking cause lid and or rim out of round slightly .

      It doesn’t matter that much. May keep in some heat and help fine tune temp regulation on long smokes. Just thought it would be a fun video to try

      It helps stabilize temps slightly. Definitely a worthwhile mod on a kettle. You really see the difference on windy days and cold ones the most. Great video!

    Well, I broke it myself. I guess I didn't apply enough Vaseline, but I had to beat the lid off with a hammer. If you think you have applied enough Vaseline, you are wrong. Apply more. Now that I have beaten the powder coating off in places, I guess it will start to rust. And it still leaks smoke because I changed the shape of the lid. I should have bought a stick on gasket.
    Now that I have already messed it up, I am thinking about what I would have done differently. I think I would have covered the base of the Kettle with suran wrap and sprayed it with Pam. I think the lid would have come off easily and I could have pulled the suran wrap off of the lid.

    Its easier to just bend your lid back into round. Or maybe use Fireplace door rope instead of silicone.

    Vaseline on the bottom lip: after you CLEAN it real good then DENATURED alcohol and Vaseline BOTH SURFACES ( the bottom metal & TOP OF THE SILICONE BEAD?)
    TRY THAT { after some lid / kettle :" banging" to make them more concentric?
    You forgot to mention:" FOOD GRADE SILICONE" ?
    SAVE SOME FOR THE TEMP GAGE TO KEEP GUNK OUT OF THE GAGE/ GLASS ETC. ?

    Why not put down some Press n' Seal on the kettle, then apply Vaseline to the Press N' Seal, then put the Lid w/High Temp Silicone on to the Kettle. This way, you don't end up with red silicone all over your Kettle rim. After 3 days, remove the lid with ease and pull off the Press n" Seal. Easy as pie!

    Really! - there's also a vent with holes in the top that leaks - need to seal that too. Just a waste of time trying to seal the sides - its not a pressure cooker - its a BBQ!!

    That’s a dumb idea plus it doesn’t hurt anything if it billows out one side I’ve done low n slow cooks and my temp is easily manageable good way to ruin your grill plus when your doiing the snake method you need to turn your lid so vent moves as the coal burns now you can’t do that

    Seems to me the Vaseline should be first the silicone will already be setting by the time you put the Vaseline on and quit talking ...

      This is mostly for smoking...Sealing the lid allows you to completely control the temperature by how much air you let into it.

      Taylor R funny, I have 4 weber kettles and a WSM I use them all the time (actually using my WSM right now). I've never needed to seal the lids.

      My WSM Leaks like a motherfucker yet it runs perfectly I can adjust the temperature from Super lo to super high and keep them very consistent.
