    Really good cook! I wouldn’t be able to pick either. It is obvious why the Slow and Sear put more smoke on the pork butt due to indirect cooking and the vent being over to the left of the fire forces all the smoke in one direction resulting in more Smokier look . Really love your channel. I purchased a Summit Charcoal because of your channel. I’m looking at a 26.75 now an plan on rigging it up with the Slow and Sear, since the don’t make it for the Summit any longer. I have rigged up my Summit with Kick Ash Basket stainless divider that fits the XL BGE and offset cooks are real easy. I am currently working with a builder to have a rib hanger for the Summit that will be used while hanging ribs directly over the coals. Smoke on brother 👊🏻

    Great video. One thing I'll say about my Summit is that the insulation really helps keep consistent temps with windy cooks compared to a single layer kettle. Maybe doesn't justify the price point for some but in CO it gets windy often and I've had many meal times saved by the double layer insulation of the Summit not only on slow cooks but 2 zone cooks as well.

    Several years into this grill… I guess I see a bit of smoke coming from the seal, especially the first half hour, but nothing like my plain Weber kettle did. It’s still amazing me how easy it is to control the temperature whether it’s 100f or -20f. I guess I’m (a little bit) of a geek like you are and want an offset and a Blackstone griddle, but honestly I don’t think there’s anything the Summit couldn’t do. Just made babyback ribs today. Pull the membrane, coat with virgin olive oil and rub with McCormick BBQ seasoning. After 5 hours of smoke over hickory (210-240f) put on bbq sauce 3 to 1 of Krafts and Heinz Texas Pit (my wife can’t do too spicy) for 10 minutes on hollow side and the 20 minutes on the other side… wow. So easy. I’ve done smokers, 3-2-1 and other messy, overly complicated methods, but the Summit beats them all. 5.5 hours and all done, and my wife keeps asking for more.
    Also, she likes baked potatoes. I cut off the ends, put them in a “boat” of tinfoil, cover with olive oil , stab them 3 times on each side, cover with kosher salt, bit of white pepper, bit of garlic powder and bunch of Italian seasoning. Sealed on the grill for all 5.5 hours and yummy. Nothing extra needed.
    www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/accessories-by-grill-type/charcoal-grill-accessories/7647.html
    The above increases your “real estate” but not limited to the charcoal Summit. I love it to grill veggies, mushrooms, onions and other stuff on top of the meat in baskets or cast iron pans. Fact, no matter what I fancy, the Weber Summit combined with my Lodge pans and/or griddles is hard to beat.

    Absolutely fantastic video Justin! Both Webers performed beautifully. I have the Slow & Sear as well, and was impressed by it. I see they have added a bottom grate to it now. Mine doesn't have that. First addition I suppose. I totally agree that it would be a very hard decision to make on which pork butt had the best results. I loved the looks of the one Weber 26", but as far as flavor goes, I prefer a subtle smoke flavor as though I was using it as a seasoning which I think the Summit achieved, but probably not enough difference in either one to make that call. Awesome video!

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  8 років тому +3

      "smoke as a seasoning" would've been a great way to describe it in my video. Dang it, that's why you don't film UA-cam videos at 2 o'clock o'clock in the morning, Right? LOL
      I asked him about the SnS bottom plate. They came out with a 2nd model that has the bottom for the 22 inch kettle. They didn't actually replace the previous design, now they have two versions of it so people can pick what they want.
      When they produced the model for the 26 inch kettle, they decided to go with the one with the bottom. I'm glad they did because that's important to me.
      Thanks for watching, Rus. Have a great rest of the holiday weekend!

    Thank you Mr. Maniac. I don't think picking a winner is the point. I appreciate the info on what to expect If I use a slow and sear or a Summit. When the cook is done is when you decide what you like. I think the darker was too dark. Just me and I put the rub on for a reason not just habit. So without tasting, I like the Summit. Now do a Chicken or Duck the same way (or both). The Summit would likely be the better finesse cook for chicken. Save up for the 26 kettle. It's worth it. In the mean time, check CL or facebook marketplace for cheap used kettles. They will clean up good as new and often you can find them for free because people think used grills are dirty (which they are so people are right...but like I said, they clean up good as new.) I've bought several Webers over the years between the prices of $25 bucks and $0. You just gotta be quick. also, do searches for "Webber" instead of "Weber" because those people tend to be willing to let it go cheaper since they don't even know how to spell Weber and since they aren't seeing much interest. Hope this helps.

      Only buy these things new if you have more money than brains. I have two Weber performers. One I got for free the other for $50.
      Literally, right now at the time of this comment, I have found several Weber 22" kettles for $30-$50 locally on Craigslist. Put a card table next to it and you can make BBQ as good as anyone. Slow n Sears' are cool but why pay +/- $100 for results that can be had for a couple of fire bricks and some tin foil. Watch some BBQ pit boys some time on UA-cam. Most of what the do is on a 22" Kettle with no fancy gimmicks.

    • @BabyBackManiac

      Yep. I think the advantage of the kamados is the versatility but if you want a smokier profile, the WSM just naturally does that due to the air flow.
      How does the WSM do in cold weather? I've heard some people complain and some say it works fine as long as the wind isn't blowing. I'm in Texas so it only drops below 20 once or twice a year...and we freakout and start wrecking our cars. lol

    After the sticker shock on the summit grill, I have thrown myself into using the Weber Kettle 22 that I own. I even added a $4 temp gauge with a drill. Overall I have smoked a brisket, whole chicken, chicken wings, and Boston butt. So far I am very happy with how I can maintain the 250 degrees on the Kettle without much work. I will have to look at the slow and sear device, I like its idea! As always great video and keep it up!

      Kevin,
      Yep. The kettle's are awesome. You really can't beat them for the money. The Slow and Sear isn't cheap but it's perfect at what it does and built to last forever. I've been impressed with mine.
      BTW, the 27 inch kettle is a more cost efficient upgrade to the 22.5 than the Summit. Its the best all around cooker I've ever had for the $. 27-22.5= 4.5 inches difference in diameter...which doesn't sound like much, but it works out to about 40% more space in sure inches. If a tornado took all my stuff away tomorrow, that would be the first one I'd rebuy...and I've had almost all them. lol.
      Thanks for watching, Kevin.

    First I would really like to get a Weber Performer but I don’t know why they can’t make it in the 27 inch version. Second I believe the better smoke is because of the vent placement to the side of the lid on the kettle. The smoke travels across over the meat and out as opposed to the Summit where the vent is directly on top , which is a design flaw in all these grills in my opinion.

    Nice side by side comparison. Keep up the good work. Your videos are really good. I have been experimenting with pizza on my summit and would definitely recommend you try it. I went with a full size pizza stone so we could do large pizzas in stead of buying the smaller one that Weber sells.

      Thanks for the tip, Glenn. I do need to try a pizza. I've done some papa Murphy's before and it turned out fine, but I bet a pizza video would be awesome on youtube. How do you like your Summit so far? Do you have a UA-cam channel where I can see it?

    One thing about the Redi Chek Mavericks there customer service is pretty awesome. I had a bad meat probe and no questions asked had one shipped to me at no cost and what really got me is i lost the wire for the grill receiver. I contacted them to purchase a replacement and sure enough they sent me a brand new one again at no cost and no questions asked. I own two or three of them and are really good at what they do!

    Grill toys are nice and if that floats your boat, go for it. Technique in my opinion can outpace the flashy shiny gadgets.
    The SNS shoulder was darker because of the airflow. The Summit with the heat deflector puts less smoke on the meat. You also likely had to run the air vents slightly tighter on the Summit to keep the temp down.

    The tie breakers for me are a more robust smoke taste and the ability to add or take away wood chunks. The kettle slow and sear seems to do that with ease but with the komado you would have to tear the whole thing down to add or subtract wood.

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  7 років тому

      The price difference is pretty compelling as well. On the flip side, the Summit is more versatile and has more convenience features and there should be a Slow 'N Sear available for it soon.
      Thanks for watching!

    Thanks man, seems like a fair review from my seat. Currently on my patio sits a Performer and WSM 22.5" and an older Weber gasser (Yeah I know, a gasser).
    Your review just confirms for me I don't need to rush out and drop $2000/2500 CAD on a Summit, it's awesome I'm sure but not a game changer.
    Thanks for the video man.

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  8 років тому +1

      If they would drop the prices to match BGE and KJBJ, it would be a game changer. It's a great grill and my favorite out of those 3, but it's definitely not worth 2500CAD with all the competitive options out there.

    IMO a Weber kettle is bomb proof and a great grill weather cooking direct or indirect, I also love my WSM .

    Justin, I watched this and laughed...You've made it. :) I recently (2 weeks ago) bought the Weber 26" kettle so I'm searching out vids for it. This one you were hoping for sponsorship and BBQ toys and soon after (relatively) you created several videos on the ABCbarbeque.com website promoting the SnS and doing vids with David P. . Congrats from watching your channel for the last couple years I don't think you'd promote something like the Mav XR50 or SnS if you didn't use and enjoy the product. I've only got one cook in on the 26" and since then got the SnS. I'm pretty sure it will live up to the hype.. if not it will last as long as the kettle does.

    The Weber kettle with the SnS is simply in the price range of more people and for the back yard cook it is a better choice. I would go with the Summit for people who have money and barbecue for a lot of people on a daily basis (like a family owned restaurant maybe) and need an efficient fire that can burn all day with very little charcoal and very little attention which insulated grills deliver.

    I know that when I've done pork on my XL egg it lacks the smoke flavor I get from my UDS or Weber 22.5 using the snake method. Kamado grills are very good for many things, just not the best at any of them.

    Weber kettle all the way. The value for the money is insane. Obviously if you can afford you buy anything you want.. But i got a 22'weber premium and my god I love it and dont regret it.. I cook for 4-5ppl at most and I can smoke anything I want.. Big enough brisket.. Pulled pork.. Buy rib rack and fit up to 4 racks easily.. Easy to move around.. Cleaning process is simple.. I also do love babysitting process rather then leave it and forget it.. So its perfect for me..
