      @@nativebird63 No doubt about this....Buddy shows imagination and the way he constructs a solo he takes alot of risks, throws in jazz and country phrases..and that TONE!!. Clapton just sticks to just a basic pentatonic box , I've seen 5 yr olds on youtube that can play better and I can never understand the fuss about this guy.

    I've known Buddy for over 20 years and I consider him a friend. He has always been amazing to me. If you knew Buddy like I do, you'd know that it doesn't matter how good he is playing guitar. He's one of the nicest and best people I've ever known. He deserved the opportunity to play with such great talent as John, Mick and Eric for many years. He finally got what he genuinely deserved and it has brought pure joy to me! Buddy, thanks for all the great music at Jubilation with the Sidemen!

    I have listened to this cut so many times!! Clapton and Whittington are very, very talented people with different styles. To compare them is pointless. I think that they really complimented each other. People can argue til the cows come home about who is the better of the two. I like them both. On the CD John says after the song "the Blues does not get better than that". I have to agree.

    Eric would be ashamed of many of the comments here. He's always been incredibly generous in using his fame to bring attention to other talented guitarists and musicians who haven't had the good fortune he has enjoyed. Buddy is one of the most talented players on the planet and some here need to cast off their teenage hero-worship days (when Clapton really was one of few people playing at his level) and realise the world has moved on and there are a lot of great guitar players out there, some even better than Eric. Clapton isn't threatened by that fact, why are so many of his "stuck in the mud" fans?

      Enough praise about Eric. Do you recall "'Rock Against Racism"? I was there. Clapton went through an overtly horrifically racist phase that he's never EVER apologized for, not fully, other than to say he still is an Enoch Powell supporter. (which is actually NO apology!). This was all the time whilst making money out of BLACK music, if he gave praise or seemed altruistic it was for a reason because he gained more money from fake praise about his black "'heros". But he gleaned a lot of neo nazis supporters in the cause many of whom continue to call him 'god' . His playing is mediocre at BEST . There are tiny kids on here that play better. Maybe he took a few chances when he was with 'Cream '& 'Blind Faith' but that was along time ago...it's like contnuing to talk about the time England won the World Cup in 1966. Yeah, they still do!

    Clapton feels a lick a split second before he executes it. And it's always a perfect lick. (Arguably too perfect a lick for Blues purists.)

    I have been a loyal fan of Clapton's ever since I purchased the Bluesbreakers "Beano" album back in 1966. He is one of the finest guitarists in rock. However, there was something about Eric's guitar tone during this concert that I found unusual. His tone sounded thin and, on the quieter passages as he was building the solo, almost tinny. What made this even more apparent was that dear old Buddy produced an incredible solo during "Have You Heard" with a guitar tone to die for. Two great players, but if ever Eric needed a Les Paul and a Marshall amp is was that gig. Just a thought. Buddy Whittington and Mick Taylor to be invited to Eric's next Crossroads guitar festival? After all he did invite Keith Urban to play at one of the festivals a year or two ago, and that guy is only an adequate guitarist at best.

    • @thomaschudalla7057
      @thomaschudalla7057 7 років тому

      cliff wheeler, i am afraid to say, you didn´t get it. what sense would it have made for eric to play even louder and faster than buddy? imagine after a heavy meal being served exactly more of the same. what eric did, was, dishing up a very delicate 2nd course, making his tone sometimes sound like sprinkling crushed ice on the cake. he accompanied buddies work and made it all a well balanced feast.

    • @maxwellfan55
      @maxwellfan55 6 років тому

      Cliff Wheeler is dead right. Clapton's tone sucks. Absolutely no slight on his ability which is well documented without question, but that Strat just sounds thin and anaemic, though he probably got the best he could out of it on the night, relying on his trademark licks which frankly sounded tired and overworked. Buddy had his tone spot on, guitar and amp, but not through chance, he used the Strat's tonal ranges to it it's very best, and did his work beforehand knowing just what he could get. The complete professional American guitarist through and through.
      Anyone would be thinking after Buddy's amazing solo, fuck, do I have to follow that. Few if any could. Mayall should have handed it it over the brass.

    • @maxwellfan55
      @maxwellfan55 6 років тому

      @@thomaschudalla7057 You need to read my comments again. At no point did I say that I wanted Eric to play louder or faster. My comment was solely regarding that unpleasant, thin tone coming from his Strat. The fact that Eric was only using the neck pickup made that sound even more puzzling, the neck pickup usually produces a softer mellow tone. I have followed Clapton throughout his career and have always admired his artistry. But personally, Eric’s sound that evening was a major disappointment for me. Mick Taylor and Buddy Whittington on the night were in great form and played superbly. It’s easy to see why Mayall had Buddy in the Bluesbreakers for fifteen years until he disbanded the group.

    Buddy Whittington's solo is probably the best ever guitar solo I have ever heard. The way it builds, his control of tone, his technique, the construction of the solo, the pure emotion of it, and the way he looks completely immersed in it.. After the second chorus he looks at the keyboard player who frantically gesticulates 'go round again!!'- the very idea he might have cut Buddy off before that final incendiary chorus. To be frank , Clapton's solo is redundant after it ...
