See, See there is no greatest guitar player. The best is always the last great guitar player you heard. How you feel, your tastes, your life experiences, their skills, fingers or picks, the song, the audience and God knows what else all affect what you're hearing. That being said put Coco up there with The Greatest.
Coco remains on of the best players alive. Expressive and flawlessly smooth. A genuine feel for the blues. Fortunate to see him with Mayall and in his subsequent solo career. Deserving of much more acclaim than he's ever received.
John's a magnet for good guitar players and ole John's voice is still great at 70. Amazing some people lose a lot of their voice as they age. And Coco's one unique talent huh? Some rock and rollers look silly at 70 but not John must take good care of himself. Go one John we'll see ya at 80 (God willing). Peace
So upset I went through the JESUS MOVEMENT in the 70s... threw my best albums away.... all MAYALL VINYL.....!!!! Everything gone.... WHY ? so perfectly heavenly.
I saw John Mayall at Slim's in San Francisco around 1990, and Coco Montoya was his guitarist then. I'd seen Coco playing with his own band at Larry Blake's in Berkeley a few times. Great show! Coco Montoya had no problem filling some very big shoes of his predecessors in the Bluesbreakers!
Every time you see Coco play, he delivers it hot and soulful...he came to our small town, Danville, Va., and did a show and opened the show with one of the greatest, lyrical shuffles I have ever heard in my life and childrens, I've see about all of them.
This was the first time I ever heard of or saw Coco Montoya I was blown away .This was one of my favorite ACL. I was so impressed with his guitar playing. I've see him and his band several times since then and it is a must see act.
I grew up with this music and too have to say he has kept his musical career going strong Coco Montoyas 'Musical career' see in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coco_Montoya John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers 'History" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mayall_%26_the_Bluesbreakers
It was also the first time I heard it, I was listening to a Mayal song with the bluesbreakers with Gary M. and Coco M. crossed me, I thought I was Mexican. A great way to get around the viola, master of teachers !!!
John Mayall Bluesbreakers was really hip back in 1969 when I was starting to listen or underground music. To get to meet him finally in 1993 was a real honour.
I saw Coco Montoya live a couple of times. He and his band pulled up in an RV to the club he was to play and was looking for parking. I'm amazed that he had travelled all the way to my town (Ottawa, Canada) in the middle of winter to play a small club. His band took a while to tune up but then they played a 90 minutes set non top. And what a fine guitarist he is. Love me some Coco. P.S. Thanks to John Mayall for showcasing so many talented guitarists.
Posted elsewhere, but fits here better: Remember the first I saw Coco....sideman for Mayall. At one point before anyone had been introduced, Coco exploded with a solo that left the audience stunned. At the end of the song, instead of saying thank you during the applause, Mayall just answered the question we all had..."Ladies and gentlemen, his name is Coco Montoya." The place erupted. Great moment of Mayall pushing his players forward, and great showing by Montoya. All class.
Coco one of the few cats that knows what that middle position on a strat can do....just. a great player...I got to sit and chat with him back in 1992 at a gig in Tuscon....we of course talked about guitars and amps... really down to earth guy and a really cool cat....
WOW...what can you say after listening to that>???? I thought the guitar looked funny, so I checked, Wiki says "Montoya is left-handed but plays a left handed guitar with a right handed neck." He is certainly the best blues guitar player I have ever seen. But, let's not forget about Mayall! The man has been around for as long as I can remember, and he just gets better and better the older he gets! Think I will listen to it again...NOW!
Makes sense because that allows him to string it 'upside down', but with the strings going to the same tuners as a right hander and with nut cut correctly.
"In the early 1980s John Mayall heard Montoya playing guitar in a Los Angeles bar. Soon after Mayall asked Montoya to join the newly reformed Bluesbreakers. He remained a member of the band for 10 years."
... and don't forget Rocky Athas (great playing and monster tone). But, regarding your question, Lynyrd Skynyrd in its prime was pretty close : Collins+ Rossington+King, and all at the same time ! Oh, and Megadeth also (Mustaine, Poland, Samuelson, Broderick, Friedman, Loureiro). Just joking, I got your point :)
@Dannycoolbreeze me too, it was from austin city limits. john mayall is a guitar player magnet. think about the players he's had. eric clapton,peter green,mick taylor,walter trout,coco montoya, and maybe the best one of them all buddy whitington. he proberly had more than what i listed.
Yes, Albert King being 1st to come to my mind, and on Bass, Gerald Johnson is another Monster Musician that plays 'upside down' w/big strings on bottom,(lower) & high small strings on Top. Gerald played/plays w/ Steve Miller, Crosby Stills Nash Young, tons of acts. Saw Coco yrs ago w Albert Collins, Albert said Coco was his ''right hand man'', Son like, it was obvious Albert thought highly of him. If memory serves correctly Coco was playing a Explorer (Gibson), or Destroyer (Ibanez), not exactly a ''go to'' Guitar for blues, but....
@MysteryHunterz Green, of course, is brilliant. But Montoya is a great player- a very expressive player. Listen to his command of dynamics, how much feeling he gets from a simple phrase just by subtly changing the dynamics.
@written12 Depends on what touches ya. Some people get touched by B.B. Kings playing, I get more touched by Robert Johnson than B.B. King. They all great though
Bye John. Your blues is forever in my mind

Great loss!
Remain in our souls forever!
R.I.P. , John!

The one and only Coco Montoya is the bomb!

John Mayall Bluesbreakers was really hip back in 1969 when I was starting to listen or underground music. To get to meet him finally in 1993 was a real honour.

That guitar solo was great!
Ol' Coco's better than I thought! Tremendous performance!

Mighty Fine Blues,..I am especially loving and enjoying the performance of the solo guitarist in this session with John Mayall.
There's the Blues breakers, and then everyone else!!!

The blues had a baby and they called it rock n roll
WOW...what can you say after listening to that>????

@MysteryHunterz

@cocolinaelse Hendrix did it as well .
Wow...a Korg T3 keyboard. Not seen one of those in years. This performance must be early/mid 90's atleast?
@fistchips Thanks !
I got to see Coco clown in Singapore while doing some serious bending in 1993.
Does anyone have the Los Lobos episode where they played Mas y mas?
what can you say coco fuckin shreds !!!
@written12 Depends on what touches ya. Some people get touched by B.B. Kings playing, I get more touched by Robert Johnson than B.B. King. They all great though
good god cocos got some bad chops !!!!
@soncyn
Well I'd rather have Peter Green with John Mayall ^^
The man touches ya with just one note.
Is that Joey Spampinado of NRBQ playing bass?
What's the date of this show?
What's the name of the lead guitare solo ?????
Coco Montoya
Coco Montoya tocando la guitarra con las cuerdas para un derecho. no cambió las cuerdas!!!
Oh Yeah, Good Blue's song........
is this Austin City Limits
for me Buddy Whittington
His strings at his guitar are upside down. Is there anyone else that's doing that?
Albert King played that way, as did Otis Rush and Dick Dale. Among living players there is Doyle Bramhall II.
@@jokermaan1 Ok
Thankyou. Coco Montoya are Also doing that.
