  • Today we taste and review the much asked for Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey, plus Rex guzzles some Four Roses Single Barrel.

** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

I'm a fan of many things created at Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare is one of my favorites....I am fortunate enough to live about 15 miles from the distillery....I was at their Christmas tree lighting a week ago....a great company with very nice employees.....added a day later - Eagle Rare is the "go to" bourbon for many of the employees of Buffalo Trace

Love the Eagle Rare! I do find that it, more than most other whiskies I’ve tried, tends to transform in the bottle after a month or so. It seems like the leathery, dusty wood notes fade a bit and more caramel apple cider notes come out. A dangerously easy drinking and crazy affordable whiskey!

As my bottle of Blanton's is getting so very low and it's so hard to find, I just bought a bottle of Eagle Rare. My friend bought a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch and a Buffalo Trace....we tried them all. I didn't much care for the Four Roses-at all. I liked the Buffalo Trace, and really liked the Eagle Rare. We then mixed equal parts Buffalo Trace and Eagle rare and called it a "Beagle". It was actually quite good!!!!

Hey Daniel and Rex. I've been a fan for a really long time (since about Lagavulin 16 which was one of my first whiskeys). I have introduced several friends to whiskey (and your channel) but I wanted to share a crowning achievement with you guys.
My wife loves girly drinks, she has not been drinking for too long, and I have been introducing her to many types of spirits in the form of cocktails for a couple of years now. Last night she had her first whiskey, and she actually liked it! I was ecstatic! A friend of mine found a bottle of Jamesons Caskmate Stout Edition and I knew that was the right whiskey to get my wife started. I'm hoping you can do a video on whiskey for people who don't like whiskey. Cheers and I hope the channel continues to grow.

Just finished a bottle and went to the local liquor store to get another and found this treasure at $28.00 a bottle for a 10 year old bourbon. That would be Blanton’s Single Barrel you’re describing, they only pull from warehouse H and between certain rick numbers only because Colonel Blanton himself felt that, that particular spot aged the bourbon better than any other warehouse. It used to not be available to the public and he would only give it out to friends, family, and politicians. I’m sure there are others, but you immediately made me think of Blanton’s.

Just happened to luck upon a bottle of Eagle Rare yesterday. It was the last bottle in the store, of the 3 they had gotten that morning. I revisited this video because of it, and just wanted to let you M.B. know it is now my favorite bourbon. Previous #1 was Basil Haydens.

  • @dschinkal
    @dschinkal 5 років тому +1

I’ve heard Eagle Rare is aged at the bottom of the rickhouses which gives it a deeper and richer flavor. Who knows if it’s true but I love how small nuances in just storing the barrels changes flavor profiles with the same mashbill

My god I've just made a beautiful discovery that all lovers of both Tea and Whisky need to try right away- Add a moderate pour of Highland Park 12 to a cup of Lady Grey Tea and you will be blown away by the magic that happens in your mouth regions. The subtle smoke and floral notes of the Highland Park 12 and the citrusy notes in Lady Grey are an amazing combination. Also it is far too good a way to justify drinking whisky first thing in the morning. Cheers lads.

I guess Eagle Rare 10 year is an allocated product, but I managed to get a couple of bottles for just over 30 bucks each at a local grocery store that doesn't usually get a large amount of stock. I gave up looking for whiskey at the more popular liquor stores, because the competition to buy popular brands makes it too unreliable to check and find what I want. An increasing amount of purchases has been at retailers that don't normally have any supply at all, so, their willingness to sell product at a decent price isn't normally subjected to price gouging.

AWESOME! These are both my go-to's. Buffalo trace is better for the price, especially because where I am I can 5 different buffalo trace single 375ml barrel bottles for $60, 12 a bottle. They want $25 for a 375ml bottle of single barrel eagle rare, so for me the SB buffalo trace is way better deal for me.
Also four roses rocks. I had an 11 yr 1 month OESQ that tasted like flowers smelled like perfume.

Have yet to try Eagle Rare, but I get that waxy flavour quite strongly on the 1792 Small Batch, never found it on any other whiskey. Also as far as variation in single barrels I tried two Jack Daniels Single Barrels that were quite different, but there was like a 5 year difference between them.

Hey guys, love the show. Got into whiskey about two years ago but only ever a bottle at a time until I found this channel a few months ago....28 bottles later I curse you guys weekly for intriguing me into another bottle (last week's addition was a bruchladdich black art 5.1!).
Have a technical question though Daniel (Rex, get a chair but know I'm with you on biscuits).
A few weeks back took a bottle to a friend's place for a party right after work so I left a bottle of Buffalo Trace (a personal favorite) in my trunk on about a 85° day in Dallas. After I get to thier place that night I had a drink of it and it was VIOLENT with alcohol burn on my tongue and the flavor was WAY off but was already back at room temperature. Later on that night I tried it again and it was completely back to normal. Am I crazy or is there something going on here?
    Cheers!

Ok, I know what you mean about sugar and hangovers. On my 29th birthday, my friends threw a barbecue and I brought some beer with me. Since it was a pretty diverse crowd , I wanted to get something with broad appeal, so I got a 6 of Summer Shandy. Nobody had any, so I pounded the pack myself and felt sober as a bird since I'm used to IPAs for beer and, well, whiskey, and summer shandy is like 3%. I got home feeling fine but when I woke up the next morning, I felt like someone was trying to make jerky out of my body with me still in it.
I understand hangovers, it's your body's revenge. But If I'm going to wake up feeling that shitty, I should at least be able to get drunk first.

Little bit of sad story warning:
A very short while ago, one of my best friend's mom passed away after a long battle with an illness. Among a big box of comfort food, I also gave him a bottle of High-land Park Viking Honor because he says he has Norwegian ancestry and is big into viking heritage.
He graciously shared it with me and drank some himself. He likes rums and thinks whisky is a bit too strong but he appreciated the viking theme involved. He said it was pretty good (I often force my whiskies down his throat to taste them), but I unfortunately did not care for it at all. It tasted a bit rougher with a stronger alcohol burn.
I originally wanted to get him Odin but that's a lot of money ($350ish?) for a whisky that might be overpriced and not all that good. Has anyone a highland park fan and has had Odin before? Are they completely different or comparable?

    • @WhiskeyVault

I'm gonna stop listening to Daniel for the next week or so. I was swirling the last bit in my glass just to get that last good nose and went a little to far and spilt some right down into the fresh cuts in my hand. Burns so very much.

You know what's funny is I live in Taiwan and you have talked about how the heat and humidity here helps Age The kavalan Whiskey hair more and when he pulls out the really old book he looks at the date when the book was made and I also live in Taiwan and I will tell you that a new paperback or even hardcover will start to turn yellow and have strange smells after four or five years.

Just picked up my first ER bottle yesterday. Found a 1.75L. Was not impressed. Had no taste. Got some caramel apple on the nose. Then mid palate everything disappeared. Was like drinking water. Buffalo trace I guess is not my cup of tea.

Could you guys do a review of the glenfiddich 21 year old? Ivd tried it a few times at a small pub where it was pretty expensive per shot, ive looked at the price of a bottle and its way out of my price range. I loved it however and was wondering what you guys thought of it, i would like to show off to this girl i was there with about my knowledge of the drink and i figured you two (especially you Rex) would know a thing of two about women;)

Hey Dan and Rex I was wondering if you would review Russell's Reserve 10 year bourbon. Also, I was wondering if you could suggest a great top shelf bourbon at 70 to 150 dollars for special occasions. My flavor palate for sweet is honey, vanilla and cherries. For spicy I like cinnamon or a peppery flavor. I also like my bourbons to be a bit smoky as well. Thanks for any suggestions and love the channel!

Hey fellows! As I have recently started drinking scotch, I am very curious about the different regions and tastes, as some have been sort of confusing. I found Talisker 10 and Storm to be far more rough and bitter than the Lagavulin, which I loved from the first try. Therefore, I am wondering if you could make a video à la your 37 minute "beginner" video, and maybe do one where you categorize the 6 different regions of Scotland`s scotches, and maybe recommend 2 from each? Much love to your livers, may they function for a long time so you can bring us amazing whisky reviews!

It's so subjective, it's hard to pick a perfect route. But I could see how that would be a thing for you. It means you're more able to handle the smoke and oak notes in Islay, but not a huge fan of the brine and bitterness in "maritime" malts.

    • @Doodlesquirl
      @Doodlesquirl 6 років тому

That really seems to be the case. I tried the talisker 10 again today, and although I found it more pleasant with more citrus notes this time, I still would not say I dig it. On the other hand, I found lagavulin`s finish to be what really settled it for me, as I loved the kind of mellow and calm ending. Is there another whisky you would recommend if I want to find something similar to this feeling, of both smokiness, but also an amazing finish? The only other I could think off is Caol Ila, which Daniel said would be the closest Islay whisky if I remember correctly.

With all the bottles on the floor of the vault I'm wondering how many companies out there bottle part of the Cask in the actual bottle to continue the aging process after bottling, since it wont age otherwise in a glass or plastic bottles normally. Ive only ever seen one company in Canada do such a thing with a single malt whisky So i figure it most not be a very common practice.

Somm whittington and revered company, i'm putting the finishing touches on my next whisky order and would love some input. The list so far: Nikka Taketsuru nas, Green spot, Fettercairn fior, Corryvreckan, jameson black barrel, Bunnahabhain Ceobanach and the difficult one, Dark art #4 or Octomore 6.3.
Daniel we seem to have a similar taste, so which would you choose?

Hey whiskey masters, does alcohol go bad after it is opened? Assuming it's stored in a cabinet and not at extreme temperature? I have a bottle of absinthe that was given to me about 7 years ago. I opened it and tried it, wasn't my favorite. I kept it around because I liked the bottle. Somebody asked me for a glass recently and I wasn't sure if I should let anybody drink it.

    • @canadianwhiskysmith6453
      @canadianwhiskysmith6453 6 років тому

Not so much that it will go bad, but if not stored appropriately, the alcohol evaporates ad the flavour profile will change.
Oxidation can also occur if there is too much air in the bottle.
Light can affect alcohol, but it's not as though it's going to spoil.
Not sure the absinthe would be unsafe to consume, but perhaps those wiser than I in the ways of whisky could make a comment or two.
(Note: Modern absinthe is not dangerous in the way historical absinthe was. However, I don't believe it is typically intended to be something you drink straight. You may want to search Pinterest for absinthe cocktails to try.)

Canadian Whisky Smith well historical absinthe wasn’t dangerous either (at least not any more than alcohol), as is the case with most of substance education in the US. Some things are demonized that turn out to be fairly benign.

  • @ppinckney

Have you ever had a "corked" whisky? I thought the first bottle of Eagle Rare I had was corked, but it could have been the water in the ice. It was not apparent when drunk neat, but when you mentioned the musty old book, I wonder if that is similar to TCA in corked wine. I asked a wine critic friend if he ever had a corked spirit and he said he had.
