Wow what a fantastic drill. I was in Fl on vacation playing golf practiced this drill and instantly began striking the ball solid. Results in a great week of golf.....thanks ao much for this simple yet effective drill
What a fantastic explanation! It’s turned on a few more lights, for me! Thanks Julian - I intend to book a couple of hours at Oxford in September and I can’t wait!
I had never seen this before, Julian, but I think it is brilliant!! My 14 year old granddaughter is a beginner and I think she will benefit immensely from this visual feedback when building this station on the ground.
What a wonderful refresher on Positive Impact Golf. I'll save this for sure as a reminder how Brian Sparks and you, Julian, helped me improve my game, allowing me to enjoy golf more and not take myself so seriously. "It's still a nice day." Forever grateful. Best wishes to you and prayers for Brian Sparks. Praying whatever his outcome, he can rest in the thought he touched so many people in a beautifully positive way.
Thanks for this video. I struggle with takeaway because I could never tell if I was doing it correctly. So, if I had bad ball strike I would endlessly go back to figure out correct takeaway/backswing.Basically just feel and guesswork!
Thank you. That is a great drill for swing path alignment. Now that I am thinking about it, I believe I have been taking my club back too far before lifting it. I will know later this morning when I hit balls.
An excellent ,very valuable video. It is an early guide that can also be used to check your club position when your feet are set up for a draw shot. I use the draw position for most of my drives & was NOT sure whether I was doing the start of the backswing correctly. This early check highlights the correct position for a draw. When the club is in the horizontal position with a draw shot it was NOT easy to check I was doing it correctly. Julian should do the paint advertisement that claims the paint does what it says on the tin. Might be a useful earner for Julian !!
I decided to take a look at my backswing to see if I had the right path. Mine wasn't right at all.....now it's better. I used to take it behind, too wrist-y. mostly because I didn't understand the swing anyway. I do understand it more now though, thanks to having found your videos.....I also love how the swing looks! :)
You are really coming up with some excellent advice Julian thank you. This bit I think I have sorted, it is the next stage, commencing the transition that I can struggle with. Hopefully you can run through this in one of your future videos, it is probably just me not putting theory and practice together. Either way brilliant advice which makes a great difference, Thank you.
Thank you for this. I always tried to ask about the takeaway to my friends or instructors but never could put it into words. I am a left handed golfer but right hand dominate and can never find a drill that addressed this. Took it to the range and was hitting my irons great. Even my miss hits were going straight.
I will try this Julian! i have a bad snap hook with my driver.. And i often over draw my irons, going to much to the left of target very often...i'll keep in touch.....
What about lifting the club when over the line set up by the club between the feet on the ground instead of waiting for it to be parallel to target line before lifting it to the top?
Julian! My backswing is basically how you are demonstrating with one exception. I don't have the "checkpoint" at the right foot to assure me that I am on plane. I also like the checkpoint at hip-level where the butt end of the shaft is pointed down the fairway. In the future, I will utilizing both to keep my shots more center cut!
Hi Julian Tnx very much for your tuition Please would you advise me as to how should I initiate the backswing is it the hands or what Sorry to trouble you best wishes Arnie from South Africa
Hi Arnie, I like to think that my motor is already running which means I don’t like to start the swing from a static set up. I prefer the body to start turning first which moves the arms and club into position. Hope this helps a little. Regards Julian
i get the club and the swing plane too much inside and behind me which i would say moves the low point more behind the ball and i have to turn hard to get it correct coming down. i'm gonna try this instead, thnx.
Ideally we are trying to turn the club away with the body until about hip height where the wrists then start to get involved. This gives you a natural wide swing without stretching, it’s also give you the sensation of more time which is. Really nice feeling, Chris
Signed up for proper golf for 1 month to see if I agree with the easy swing. Also reviewed the vertical line swing with USGolf. Similar swings although usgolf says weight 60% on the left side. Seems like some conflicts on the takeaway which I think is the most important part of the swing. The downswing and follow through happens in milliseconds. Getting on plane is paramount for a good swing. I intend on signing up for proper golf after our winter months are over and I figure out how to video tape my swing.
Hi Brian, thanks for the message, any problems making a video just let me know as I can easily help you with this. Let’s hope winter isn’t too bad and your able to get playing earlier.
Hi Julian, it’s always a pleasure to watch your watch your videos. Great and helpful tips for an average Golfer.Hopefully I will come over to GB for a one or two day course. Thanks for your support. Kind regards from Germany Uwe
Julian, good morning. I'm a senior golfer with hip issues , arthritis , and so I draw my right foot back slightly to create more turn. How does this affect the position of the 3rd club which is placed across the left heel and right toe ? Thanks 👍 ⛳🏌
I am confused with your suggestion to have the shaft pointing straight down the target line at hip height when we know that the swing is an arc around the body and there isn’t a straight line in an arc. This “JT” move of his would produce a backswing in a more upright position and off the arc wouldn’t it? Doesn’t a backswing that is too upright or too flat cause issues such as fade or draw or worse slice or hook? Can you un- confuse me?
@@JulianMellor thanks for the explanation Julian. After watching this video again, I can clearly see the point you are making. As always you have given us an excellent tip that I don’t see other instructors offer. My golf season is winding down here but I definitely can practice this indoor. I am sure that I will be reviewing this any many of your other instructions throughout the winter months as I have in past years. 👍🇨🇦👨🦳

Brilliant, glad it’s helped Ronald, sometimes simplicity is best 👍
First time I’ve seen a work station set up like this….very helpful! Thx much.
Hope it helps, Ron
Great tip Julian will try this on the range!
Cool
Great video Julian. Cheers.
Thanks Tim, how’s it helped you? How’s your golf?
EXCELLENT.
Great advice Julian as usual
Thanks, hope it helps
Really critical point great lesson for everyone sucking it in. Thanks

Be great to help you 😀
Great Julian, I am going to try this.
It really helps give clarity to the backswing
Great drill Julian, an early checkpoint, very helpful. Thank you.
My pleasure Tim
Love it!
What do you like about it Roger?
the simplicity, Julian! So many videos (and I’ve watched too many) make the golf swing complicated. Your relaxed style is so refreshing! Thank you
@rogerstanley7906 that’s kind, thanks for sharing that with me
What a simple and excellent tip ... absolutely part of my warm up from now on
Brilliant

It really helps golfers get the first bit right James
Julian I think this is a very useful tip and great advice.
Glad you like it
Great video and instructions I will try this immediately Thanks
Be interesting to hear how you get on Robert
Brilliant drill! Can’t wait to put this into practice. I’m a senior novice, but I have an idea this will help cure some of my inconsistency. Thanks.
Let me know how you get on 👍

Thank you Lloyd
Best drill ever,I try it work great, change my game
Brilliant drill..
Great visual tip thanks. Your method is working really well for me thanks. It’s the first time I’ve felt truly tension free in my swing.
Awesome
excellent video. I have been working on that kind of checkpoints and it has really straightened my ball flight.
thanks.,, Paul
It gives us a lot of confidence when you can trust your swing
What a great drill Julian, visual check, instant feedback. Love it.
It’s so useful being able to check things early on in the backswing, Steve
What a great simple idea. I'll try this at the range tomorrow before I play as find it hard not to take club back inside. Thanks Julian.
My pleasure

Pleased it’s helped you, nothing worse than guessing. Keep at it and before you know if you’ll be doing it without thinking 👍
This got me back on track immediately after a month of being way off. Thank you.

Ok , if you want to hit the outside of the ball Harold

That’s great John, don’t over obsess with the two movements as they are a check point that’s all 👍
I did institute the two recommended positions into my practice routine and they definitely work. Thanks again for your expertise Julian!
Do you start hinging and lifting the driver when is on line with the 45 degree angle ?
About hip height, Juan
Im getting a straighter shot if I take my right foot back a couple of inches. Should I need to do this?
Interesting, keep an eye out for a video on this subject coming out this week 👍

My pleasure Tony
Great video, but I miss the final position at the top.
What do you feel you need to do to get this movement correct, Steve ?
@@JulianMellor Thank's for asking. Well, I guess hinge the club and lift it as I turn the shoulders until my hands are in line with my back shoulder?
Hi Julian. Do the wrists become involved to get the shaft parallel after the 45 degree point? Or is it still purely just rotation? Many thanks
Ideally we are trying to turn the club away with the body until about hip height where the wrists then start to get involved. This gives you a natural wide swing without stretching, it’s also give you the sensation of more time which is. Really nice feeling, Chris

My pleasure, be great to meet you one day 👍😀
I would like to see the complete backswing
I have quite a few videos on the backswing on UA-cam 👍
I remember your early videos, which helped me so much. You said in one of them 'I don't teach positions, that is so mechanical.' What happened?
I wouldn’t say it’s mechanical just a simple way to check the start of the backswing that’s all
Julian, good morning. I'm a senior golfer with hip issues , arthritis , and so I draw my right foot back slightly to create more turn. How does this affect the position of the 3rd club which is placed across the left heel and right toe ? Thanks 👍 ⛳🏌
It still works absolutely fine, I’m pleased that you have pulled your foot back. It must help you turn easier in the backswing
Instead of using clubs can you just use alignment sticks?
Absolutely 👍

Doesn’t a backswing that is too upright or too flat cause issues such as fade or draw or worse slice or hook? Can you un- confuse me?
It’s simply a point in the backswing that if we took a still picture it would appear that the club is pointing parallel to the ball to target line

Hi it might seem a silly request to you is it possible to see you swing in slow motion regards Denis
Hi Denis, I believe I’ve made a video in slow motion. I’ll check and comeback to you if I have
What happens if your right foot is in line with your left foot? Your right foot is set back from your left foot, it appears.
Still works absolutely perfect, Ben
@@JulianMellor Good to know.
Can you finish the swing so I can see the rest of the backswing?
I’ve made a lot of videos that show me completing the back swing which are on my channel 👍
The width of your feet at address will change this angle. Should it.?
It will change slightly with different widths of stance
A little bit complicated for me Julian how to say the easiest swing in golf method
I prefer
I get asked to make all sorts of videos so I feel it’s only right to help them
simple moves are the easiest to learn
No need to make complexity out of simplicity Joe
I find that the golf swing is a feedback loop
I would say we can always get better 👍😀
Julian
No video is worth watching when you get an ad 1 minute into it. I guess it’s all about the money?
Interesting, didn’t know that was the case
