Hi David, I found this video a few days ago and your thoughts were well conveyed. Good teaching. I had a lob wedge years ago but couldn’t use it. Saturday comp I used my open sand wedge on 4 occasions to carry out your instructions. Smack on! I did fall short once, into green side bunker but that was part of the learning. I feel confident enough now to enjoy those short wedges onto the greens. Well done. I’ll keep on watching your other videos.
From North Jersey, USA. Good technique. Three to four inches of snow on the ground here. Can't wait until the snow melts here to try it with my wedges.
I feel yah on the snow. I have that to shovel off my driveway right now. Not much any of us this far north can do until April, except practice indoors when we can, or fly south, as another comment mentions.
That was excellent . I've never really seen many tutorials on proper lob wedge techniques. I've always viewed them as a more extreme sand wedge . I was pretty good with sw but have struggled being new to lw . Much appreciated.
Thank you for another well explained video David. I ❤ your 2step rule. You never assume you will hit the perfect shot - there’s always room for error. I find I’m now slowly incorporating this into my game. I haven’t got it down pat yet but I’m increasingly aware of what will happen if my shot goes long, short, left or right. If I miss. I want to miss well. I wish you and yours a lovely Christmas 🎄 Look forward to catching up in June. It’s going to be 40C here in Melbourne on Boxing Day.
Excellent video. Thank you so much for all of your videos. I have learned much and importantly have rethought my course strategy and expectations. Have a great Christmas and New Year
Excellent, that's an affirmation for me. I too have a 60° wedge and I'd use it as you described for a "show time, Phil Mickelson's shot" 😂 Problem is, sometimes head up too soon and I'd top it.
...when you get done practicing your putts on the putting green, the chipping-green will be waiting for you. One thing that I love about playing golf is going out on a slow day and seeing someone who lives near the course out practicing this chip while wearing flip-flops with their kids and their dogs out running around in the fairway. And you get there and they see you and leave and you can see spots where all the grass is gone because they stood there hitting chips for an hour. And you realize that this is what you paid $50 for, so that you could hit one chip, take a couple of putts and get out of there while they stand there on their balcony watching you play. And you look up at them and say, "do you get to play for free because you live here? This round cost me $50!" and walk on to the next tee. Either they are members or they are not members but it is not cheap to play a good neighborhood golf-course and putting them in their place with a good up & down is just the icing on the cake. Either way they know that they are not supposed to be out on the course practicing chips and fucking-up the course. Without any sand and without fixing their divots. But they do it anyway. But they think that they are special people because they live on a golf-course. And then they wonder why people think they are assholes. I've seen kids riding 4x4s and dirt-bikes around greens and in the traps, that's how little many people think of this particular scenario. This may be an incredibly stupid scenario to a non-player but this is the bread & butter shot for a golfer. You're either short on your approach or long on your drive, but luckily not in the trap. Just...behind it. You can lose, or gain, a lot of strokes from this lie. So try to to focus on whoever might be watching you. Pull a PW, walk up behind the club, open the club about 30 degrees, keeping the blade down under the bounce , take an open stance next to the ball, take a half backswing, and keeping your wrists and elbows locked just casually flip the ball up on the green with the tip of your clubface. You want to catch the ball near the far end of the blade, where it's still straight. Swing the clubhead towards the spot you want the ball to land. Inside 50 yards or so you should have no problem making this shot with a PW, outside of that I'd use a 9 or an 8 iron. Use enough club and keep the face closed enough that you don't have to swing hard to get the ball to the green...focus on getting the blade down just under the ball and let the club do the work for you. Simple. If you keep the blade down below the bounce and put enough of the clubface under the ball, that's the way to do it. Then you almost cannot hit the shot either fat and duff the shot or hit thin and blade the ball. You're almost guaranteed to get the ball up in the air regardless of the lie and without a lot of power in the swing it will be difficult to hit the ball way past the green. It will get you on, or at least close, to the pin. Reliably. That is the whole point. If you want to try the shot with a square-up setup, be my guest. I never hit chips that way, not even sand-shots. Always at least a *little* open. Beyond that a pitch is just a full iron shot with a half-swing. You need to get that connection before you can hit decent pitches with the difference being that a decent chip or pitch goes towards the pin while a bad one goes into the hazard next to the green. Non-golfers will never understand why this shot is so important because they don't care enough to even play much less to practice.
Instead of going to a driving range and hitting balls with your driver, the average golfer will improve their game much more by spending the same amount of time on and around the practice green. And you'll save money as you are not paying for buckets of balls ! COACH My only criticism is that you say stand 10 degrees open, but you looked more like almost 30 degrees open. Mark you I was never that good at geometry at school.
Too much talk… Nahhh!!! This particular shot need all that explanation!!! And he does it perfectly!! I’m pretty good on this shot.. and to do it you need exactly what he said. Great coaching.. thanks
Thanks for this video. I have the three lob wedges but don’t use them for they disappointed me all the time as a 20HCP new golfer. But from this and other videos, you have been a great teacher to me. Just from watching and applying on the fairways, I have moved been able break 100 consistently four times now. Previously I could do best at 100-110. This is Winter here in Pacific Northwest USA. I will not let the WINTER stop me. 0:41 I have watched a lot of other youtube coaches but I can confidently say your way of teaching is perfectly compatible with my learning style. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏽🙏🏽
Depends on the courses you play. On my club courses there are several greens above the fairway where a lob wedge is the club to play. The more you practice the better you get.
Thank you for an absolutely informative lecture....Only one thing....Youz gize from England tawk funny! ...Henry Higgens line about the English language. " Why in America they haven't used it for years "😂
Outstanding video, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Glad you enjoyed the video
Excellent teacher. Not just how, but why along with the mental approach. THANKS ! ! !
Glad you’re enjoying the videos

Brilliant, please enjoy my videos
Well taught. Thanks for the clarity of action reaction.
Thank you
David, another great video, your details are amazing and very well explained.
Thank you
No, Thank You,
We have snow on the ground here, so it will be late April before we can get out and golf again, unfortunately!
Happy Holidays

Cold here but not to your level, hopefully it will clear soon
South Florida awaits you.
Drummond Island Mi. , 12" of snow , was thinking of taking some colored balls out to try it 😂😂😂

Trust the club and it will become a real friend on the golf course
Your instruction is superb Sir.
Thank you

Merry Christmas and Have a Great 2025
Good stuff and let the club do the work 👍
Definitely

Watch my Video ‘Hitting Grate Pitch Shots’ to help you understand how the club will do the work for you, how the grooves give you control
Grieves release three would stop that ball better. But love the details of the shot.
Thank you
excellent…the “why” is just as important as the “how”…my question is what club do I eliminate to carry the 60° wedge. i already carry 48, 52, and 56….
I only carry 44 degree, 52 degree and 60 degree
You set at the beginning with the ball slightly towards the back foot, but then you slightly open up your stance and the ball position changes a bit?
Relative to my stance the ball is always back in my stance, as the stance opens it looks more central relative to the target.
Very small shallow bunker what about an elevated green with a deep bunker?
Same technique will work for that shot
...when you get done practicing your putts on the putting green, the chipping-green will be waiting for you.

Great instructions video showing both views.. Need a shade less talking though.
Thank you for watching and you enjoyed the instruction
Great stuff again, although "Grate Chip shot" video recommendation should be spelt "Great" ..😊
it was a play on words as I was using a Cheese Grater

Spend as much time on the golf course and you’ll see a bigger improvement
👏👏👍
👍
Paces? You mean a yard?
A couple of paces, 5 to 6 feet. Make sure you land on the green, to take away the unknown
Too much talk… Nahhh!!!

Thank you for this feedback
Mr. Teacher, tell the student what to do. Telling the student what "not to do" defeats learning. AMF
Thank you for the feedback
He taught both, what to do AND what not to do. And then successfully demonstrated the lesson perfectly. Thanks
Too much talkie
Getting the golfer to understand the shot is the priority, that’s where my pupils see the greater improvement
Less talking and more shots. Thats what we want to see. And short and longer shots
Once I find that the golfer understands what to do, then the improvement is much greater.
The average golfer doesn't need a lob wedge, and shouldn't carry one.
If you can play it it’s a great asset to have whatever level you play to
And what’s wrong with carrying it if today I learn how to?
Thanks for this video. I have the three lob wedges but don’t use them for they disappointed me all the time as a 20HCP new golfer. But from this and other videos, you have been a great teacher to me.

The lob wedge is really great especially if the green is narrow and with a bunker on the opposite side.

Hi if you do a DVD TIPS for Golfers ⛳🏌️ please let me know LES from Perth Australia
Not in the plans at the moment, but something to think about. The good thing is you can go back to these videos to get a recap on what to do
