I am getting a pit lab mix today and he’s not quite a year old and the person who is giving him to me said that they haven’t been able to house train him. I’m a bit nervous about it and that’s why I’m here. I’m 61 years old and haven’t had a dog in 25 years! This dog stole my heart when I first seen him. So I’m cramming for any advice on potty training!

Am thrilled about this series but was so sad to see that Shade’s tail has been docked - but I guess that was done before you had a say. Docking and cropping of ears is banned in the UK and punishable with jail, as it should be everywhere. Ears and tails are an essential part of dog communication and they really shouldn’t be touched. Please Zac and Bree you know this mutilation isn’t necessary and you have the platform to stop this practice. This comment isn’t a criticism of you but a genuine plea from the heart of a dog lover. That said, am really looking forward to the series.

I can understand why a lot of people think that way. I used to think that way too. it's kind of like getting your wisdom teeth pulled or getting your tonsils taken out. It's for health reasons to prevent possible unnecessary pain and ill-health later. I had a pitbull that had both her ears and her tail and she Not only would get hematomas on her ears but I also had a gated acre of land and if she wagged her tail too close to the gate, then blood would fly everywhere because she would wag her tail too hard against the gate making her bleed. I've also seen a friends Pitbull put their tail straight into a burning fire just because they wanted to sit down and look pretty for a treat. Dogs tails can really get them in trouble, where when they are just a couple of days old, there's not very many nerve endings in their tail yet. Docking tails is not typically to be a cruel Act, it's usually for sanitary reasons or to prevent having to go to the vet and saving the dog out a lot of pain and spending tons of money on something that could have been prevented.

My intention is not to be rude, but to be educational for someone who doesn't understand why someone would do that. I agree, at first glance, it's alarming but when you hear from the other point of view, it might make a little bit more sense. I hope this helps

My daughter has several Dobermans. Many that she has rescued. All of them have their ears and tails cropped. If they wag their tails and they are not cropped and their tails hit an object it can cause their tails to break. Ears are cropped to prevent infection.

Hi Margaret. I Agree 💯docking and cropping is barbaric I would assume. Like Circumcision is definitely Barbaric. Any one who says docking and cropping is mutilation and painful but thinks Circumcision is OK is out of touch completely. Asking Zak to fight that fight is probably not
the best idea. If you watch Zak you know he is VERY involved in getting rid of ANY kind of what Zak calls Adversive trying tools. His plate is Full fighting this concept. Hey, maybe because it upsets you so much maybe YOU could do something.
      Good luck

Just wanted to say I’ve been watching several trainers videos and you are who I am sticking with. Some trainers have SO MANY conflicting methods within their own training style and different words for same action. Dog training at its finest is work enough to not complicate it with explaining something in 8 different ways. I bought your book. I’m thrilled you are advocating against abusive dog trainers who are misinforming millions of dog owners! You are doing great and positive work with dogs and I have become a grateful follower and fan!

I believe some dog trainers might have reservations about the use of choke collars because they either lack proficiency in their proper application or because they recognize it as a quick-fix solution to resolve issues. They may prefer alternative, slower methods to prolong the training process and charge clients for additional time. The debate over whether choke collars are painful is subjective. I'm aware of a facility with over 30 years of experience in training aggressive dogs using choke collars alongside other methods. This issue isn't a one-size-fits-all scenario; it's about a group of individuals looking to profit from their services due to the substantial financial potential.
One pertinent question to consider is: If they are indeed confident, why haven't they provided a comprehensive video demonstration, from start to finish, showcasing the positive reinforcement technique of training a large aggressive dog with treats?

I love watching you and the way you interact with dogs. You're one of the reasons I want to work with dogs for a living. I know this new series is coming and I'm really excited for it, but I already have a suggestion for another one. I recently started fostering dogs, it's going amazing and 3/4 of my fosters got adopted! But that made me curious how you would work with a fearful/shut down dog. I recently fostered a ~5 months old girl that was so shut down, she did not leave her crate at all for the first few days (not even at night) and was going to the bathroom literally under herself. I had to force her out of he crate to clean up and then she went right back in. My heart was breaking for her and I was wondering how you would approach working with a dog like this.
Surprising thing that really helped that pup was to stay alone for 1,5h (in a controlled environment!) as I had to get my friend's doggo to the vet's. She got some of her confidence back and right before she got adopted she was only scared of people (freeze/flight reactions, no aggression).

Wrestling with our other dog is his favorite thing to do. My 2 biggest challenges are training with distractions and we cant get him into a pool. And it is extremely hot where we live. It is still in the low 100's. We are housebound for about 6 mo of the year. This also impedes training. I know he will get there, cuz your books and videos are the best.

Update about my puppy training with my new puppy all thanks to ZackGeorge; my puppy can now follow down, roll, sit, & fetch... he's still a little uncomfortable adapting to his crate so we're working on that slowly. Seriously Mr George; you have changed my entirety of my perspectives on dog training. I hope to know more on how to lower anxiety on adult dogs cause I have 2 adult dogs which I didn't have the opportunity to train properly from puppyhood. I've been following all your episodes but I'm a little scared with managing my adult dog cause he is very possessive with his things. Day to day, he is okay with family but can be quite dangerous around other animals. Would love to hear some advice on that.❤❤❤ Thank you so much Mr & Mrs George. I have one purebred catahoula at my mum's house (as well as one mix breed catahoula) and an aussie/bull terrier/lab mix at her house as well. At my dad's house we have a staffy mix. I would recommend using a 30-50 foot leash before doing any actual off leash training or activity. It takes at least a good year for a dog to be off leash trained but it begins with training on a leash lol zak also uses long leashes and talks about them a lot with untrained dogs and off leash training. He has a few videos on “off” leash training but in the videos they are on a leash

@@jus.me.tanzks5834 Yeah for sure... I was going to train with long leashes. But I was wondering at times to just let him run around... Like no training just playing. I know I shouldn't use the invisible or GPS fences while he's a pup, but as he ages it would be nice to let him run free.

Hey, Zak! I know you are super busy and may not even see this comment, but I really need your help!
I am an aspiring dog trainer and love watching your channel to learn about dog training and I apply what I see on your channel to training my own dog. Looking at the two types of dog training, I'm learning all the time why certain things are less effective or even more damaging in the long term.
My family doesn't do a lot of research into this, they just want well behaved dogs. They also tend to lean towards the "fastest" ways to get a result, punishment. My family's dog has recently started marking our barbeque grill and his water bowl. Then we moved and he no longer had access to the grill and the bowl is now closer to the ground, so he's no longer marking it, but he has started marking anything metal or plastic he has access to. We don't want him marking these things and my family wants to use a shock collar to discourage his marking these things, but I'm concerned that doing so could make him afraid to mark or even pee on anything? Are my fears completely unfounded or am I on to something? And how would you handle this problem?

Let me take a shot at this.
So you will be training sit, down, stay, threshold manners, loose leash walking, leave it and our favorite word uhuhu. Your personal border collie is going to act in a way that is not in your script your rescue pup is going to be timmed and have outburst.
Ect.... we have seen it all before. Don't forget the add campains in the beginning of every video. And you will be using a lot of fancy talk for putting a treat Infront of a dog and asking them to sit. Free shaping ect. We know zak you can train puppies good for you. But can you train owners to train their own puppies or problematic dogs?
Every episode at this point is the same. So what is the point.

I remember you mentioned clipping your puppy to your belt in your book. Something I wish I knew when my corgi was a puppy. She chewed many wires! Even though she is two years old, she is on a leash and I'm on the other end. I believe that this has created a bond between us! I release her when we play fetch and meal times. She's never has eaten from a bowl. I use mental stimulation activities and she's loves it! Sometimes I have to be careful because she may show signs of food aggression. I noticed that there were many negative comments on cropping. My daughter has several Dobermans and she informed me that if their tails weren't cropped and they wagged their tails hitting an object it would break their tails. Cropping ears prevents infections. Who wants to keep paying vet bills when it could be prevented? My Pembroke Welsh Corgi's tail is cropped. This practice probably dates back to when they were used to herd cattle. The were bred with Dachshunds to create their short legs.

The focus here is not to vilify individuals but to critically evaluate methods and techniques. Augusto’s practices, which employ force and intimidation, do not align with current, evidence-based understanding of animal behavior and welfare. It’s important to clarify that while his approach may claim to save dogs from euthanasia, the training techniques he employs can exacerbate behavioral issues rather than resolve them, ultimately affecting the long-term well-being of the animal. The aim is to educate the public on modern, scientifically supported methods that prioritize the dog’s emotional and physical health.

Actually I'm someone who supports balance training, I do feel like he goes overboard with some dogs. (judging this by a few of his shorts and youtube videos). I feel like he leans towards a more aversive rather than balanced approach. I definitely think what he does works and he cares about the dogs he trains(hence the support) but there are other balance trainers (eg. Larry krohn) who show a less extreme way of helping the behaviours. I feel like Augusto pretty much uses the same method for every dog while in reality he should change the approach based on the cause of the dogs behaviour. (Eg. are the being aggressive because of resource guarding, fear of humans etc.)

      1. only feed your dog when training, it's okay if he/she won't take the food and don't eat 24-36hrs. don't give free food, make your puppy work for it
      2. follow through your command, and you need to say the command once only. for example when you ask your puppy to sit, make sure you say it clearly. and wait till he/she sit. use leash so you can stay at one place and wait till he/she sit. you can also use negative reinforcement by giving pressure to his/her back

@zakgeorge the problem I had with my Boerboel didn't start as a puppy but when he reached 14months old. We worked with a professional positive reinforcement science based trainer since he was a tiny puppy between 10-12 weeks old. We worked with this trainer every week 3 private lessons and 1 group classe up until 14 months of age. That is when he attacked the trainer for the first time and it wasn't just a nip or air snap. I had to chock him off of the trainer. Found a nother positive reinforcement trainer worked with him for 2 months when he attacked a German shepherd. After that is when I contacted a local balance dog trainer and started learning about leadership corrections and how to read his body language. He is 11 years old and never again had an bite incident since and never went into that red zone attack again. He is so old but if he sees another dog he is just a big old puppy having old man zoomies. This is why I am concerned for this puppy in the future.
