One thing I love about Open Mike is when he is finished interviewing footballers like Schwarz, you walk away liking that person a lot more because they are no longer just a player on the field, but a real person and the fact they might wear the opposition's colours doesn't mean you can't appreciate them more. I now have so much respect for everything Schwarz has gone through.
As a young child, I played junior football against David many times who played for Sunbury and that was after the death of his father. He was an emotional kid on the field.. I didn’t know of course what happened to this young talented kid and the pain he went through as a child. I haven’t had the best life and some of that is my own fault,. I have had gambling addictions problems since I was 15..i have just put a life time ban on myself.. I just have so much respect for the ox... even at 10 years old he was a freakish athletic talent on the footy field.. he would have been a great of the game without those injuries.. I also loved his commentary and his passion for the game.. you hear it in the 2008 gfinsl when my hawks won... I hope he’s in a good place now whatever he is doing. Good luck champion 👍
Such a raw and deep honesty from this guy! I have nothing but a deep respect for any individual, who can openly lay out their vulnerabilities! Truly inspiring really
I really enjoyed this one. Shows that there is more to football than just kicking a ball. The lows can sometimes outweigh the highs. David's attitude through is very encouraging and I am sure everybody wishes him all the best in his continued recovery.
Old clash at better to have been a has been Schwarz y than a never have been. You were a champion and still a good fella. Thanks for the footy memories .
Thanks David for your wonderful honesty mate, especially about your gambling and your views on what the AFL does. As a school teacher and Sports Chaplain at a footy club, I see how it effects young people. 18-24 year olds are targeted and influenced the most, especially now with the ease of apps. Please continue to be vocal about the impacts of gambling.
I remember fondly watching him in 1994, and seeing someone who could be as good as Carey. Such a shocking run of injuries' though meant he never reached the heights. He was good still, but Melbourne's fortunes to winning a premiership ended when he had his 1st reco in 1995.
I’ve just read the Ox’s book ‘All Bets are Off’ …. twice! What a life story. So happy for you David that you’ve overcome your demons (no pun intended).
Respect to Ox. Poor guy to see his dad murdered, then to play at the highest level in a tough era. He has beaten other things, gambling and the like. Good on him.
Great bloke. Loved it when he rag dolled Sam Newman. Apparently it genuinely messed him up, had to see a chiro and get treatment for a while afterward. Deserved everything he got.
He's right about the bookmakers grooming young kids into gambling. The betting ads, idiots who give us betting updates like Nathan Brown etc. It's not right
Absolute rubbish. Bookmakers don’t groom young kids in to gambling. David Schwartz is a liar and a fake. When he said he’d given up the punt, my brother worked at one of the betting companies and David bet for years and years beyond that. He’s a liar and a fake.
@@jackayres1569 It's not rubbish mate. So many kids watch football and the shows during the week. There is a ridiculous amount of betting ads. You seriously think he bet again? Doubt it, if he did he'd lose his jobs because he had contracts
@@_Chris_D_3004 David Schwartz is a liar. He said that he’d given up the punt but continued to bet. He’s a hack and blames the bookies for his problems. If the hack could back a winner, it wouldn’t be a problem. I remember working for a bookie at the races, and he backed a winner and won over $10,000 cash, and he was arrogantly saying ‘how easy is this, how easy is this!!!’ What a fool. Schwartz was a hack as a player and is a hack in life.
@@jackayres1569 Where in that interview did he blame his problems on the bookies? He took responsibility for everything he's done. And he is 100% spot on about the saturation of gambling advertising in every aspect of football, that was in 2013 and it's only got worse now
@@robbiewallis748 Yeah, he takes responsibility now, but he blamed others for a long time. The grooming kids for gambling by the bookmakers is total rubbish spoken by a proven liar and problem gambler. David Schwartz is a hack in life.
It's great that the Ox beat the punt. But his ambassador role for ALH is a showpiece, nothing more. A few promotional photos and videos, that's it. The business model of ALH is predicated on problem gamblers and doing the absolute minimum required of them by State legislations.
scraping the bottom of the barrel. met him up in queensland in 1994 when i was a 12 year old during summer at a local swimming pool. he was there with barry stoneham, justin madden, john rantall, greg williams, tony shaw, leigh matthews, mark ricciuto, jason akermanis, nick maxwell, david rhys-jones, neil balme, andrew mcleod, simon black, david schwarz, anthony koutoufides, mal michael, andrew demetriou, sam newman, matthew richardson, nathan buckley, rene kink, damian monkhorst, tony liberatore, keith greig, royce hart, bob murphy, stewart loewe, wayne schwass, kevin bartlett, alastair lynch, gavin wanganeen, corey mckernan, robert walls, peter sumich, denis pagan, jason dunstall, john kennedy jr, bob skilton, neil kerley, wayne johnston and phil carman. they were all acting like total flogs.

Possibly the best Open Mike I've seen. Huge respect for the Ox for turning his life around. Great bloke.
