Straight shooter, the reason Pagan and Mathew's liked him was because he was the sort of guy that stabilised teams, dependable, loyal and thrived in the trenches when the chips were down.
I think it was Simon Black that said the Leigh ran a tight ship and didn't suffer excuses or fools well at all, including the drink. But if Pikey turned up at training on Sunday clearly under the weather after a big night Leigh would just happen then to look the other way because he knew what he brought to the team. Anyone else and they were gone.
I remember a function in 1996 I was at, it was an after game event at the FFC Hotel, and Pikey was drunk, wearing a wig and singing karaoke. He was in no way offensive and had a singing style reminiscent of Lee Marvin's Wand'rin' Star, so made me smile :)
pikey was my favourite player as a Brisbane lions supporter.. only reinforced by meeting him at the casino. on the black jack table. I was shocked that he was there. and was just a normal person. I left my cigarettes on the table when I lost my money. mister martin pike found me 40 minutes later and gave my smokes back. what a legend for no other reason... a real man and a real human while absolute superstar on field... wish more sportsmen more like him..
ben field I play darts against him in the Northern Darts Association in Melbourne, I’m a north fan, he’s an absolute gun, legend and a gentleman. But he definitely likes a drink during the week these days 👍 Love the Open Mike interviews
He left North at the perfect time. It was a blessing in disguise really from a football sense anyway. 2001 North missed the finals for the first time since 1992 and then at the end of that year was the affair scandal and the club didn’t challenge again for another decade. Instead he went to Brisbane and won 3 straight premierships and a 4th grand final.
In the first Grand Final with Brisbane, straight after leaving North Melbourne, I would have awarded Martin Pike the Norm Smith Medal. He was impenetrable and impeccable. But the Norm Smith Medal always gets awarded to midfielders, same with the Brownlow Medal.
I didn’t know about the controversies of his career mainly because I remember him at Brisbane Lions and there was no major controversies. He was a brilliant player.
The game has deteriorated since his era. Then they could have a beer, money and personal life wasn't so much an issue. It's been sanitised like society in general. Just robots now.
As a Troo Roo! Pikey was worth a lot more than what he got paid!!! The 99 GF he was almost best on ground! He battled with the worst clubs at the time in Melbourne and Fitzroy, had all the talent, North Melbourne exposed that and the Brisbane Lions exploited that!!! But i love the message to #JarrodMolloy that Mal Michael sent
He was an excellent player & comes across as a genuine bloke but his drink-driving record shouldn't be minimized as some young fella mucking up. He was lucky he wasn't jailed in 1996.
Scraping the bottom of the barrel. Met him down in Hobart in 2015 at the Salamanca markets at a local cafe. Tried to cut the line in front of me. Total flog.
And you've never done that in your entire life??! Come live in Sydney...or any city...it's a daily occurrence..Deal with it. Yeah, not polite on his part but he didn't kill anyone
@@russnation3386 he comments this on every Open Mike video. Just about every AFL player ever tried to cut the line in front of him at the Salamanca Markets in 2015
Haha good point! However he was probably cut seeing some of his team mates getting a hell of a lot more of the pie so to speak. Totally agree though, i'd do anything for 150 grand Lol :P
+TigerCeltKing Don't think he's complaining, just responding to the question. A few players at the Lions were being payed unders during the glory days from what I've herd.
Fantastic Player and Top bloke
This is the best open mike. Pike is awesome. A real footballer.
Agreed. Sobriety is boring.
One of the all time greats. Played with his heart on his sleeve and has 4 premiership medals at home for his troubles.

Super nice bloke. Offered me a spliff at the Grandview.
Down to earth and very talented

@M Soccer: beloved by lady boys the world over.
One of the most underrated champions to ever play the game!! A true Aussie battler. Old school hard nut.
When the average AFL career is 3 years, it's an incredible effort to get picked in 6 grand final sides.
love him. straight shooter. doesnt hide behind a mask... authentic.
I used to love watching Pike mop up in defense. His and David King's runs off half-back flank were a hallmark of North's game during that period.
Pikey had such a cheeky grin on his face when mike read out what he said about the wakelins 😂 😂 😂
Coming from a Fitzroy fc family and now passionate Brissy lions fans we always loved Pikey!

Legend. Always got the job done on & off the field! CARN THE LIONS!!!

Immense in that first QTR going by memory
Great interview. Knock about guy who won 4 flags and last B&F at Fitzroy. Great career.
Saw Pikey and Gary McIntosh walking down the parade back in the day. Legends.
likeable and intelligent guy. very impressive football career.

swans since '77.
Pike was the sort of player you'd just love to have on the ground with you as a teammate.
I didn’t know about the controversies of his career mainly because I remember him at Brisbane Lions and there was no major controversies. He was a brilliant player.
Ah the good old days. I miss these sort of characters from the AFL
He's damn spot on about the Wakelin sisters
He says some wise things here, mostly about how plays are kept a bit "rigid" post match these days.
@19:20 you can see that Leigh wanted to punch that AFL official post-2004 Grand Final.
Greatest player ever!
A good norwood man south Australian.
nice video thanks for posting
Good insight into who I thought was a quiet achiever who played hard.
huge reason they won the flags they did, cant believe he was paid so little
Legend MP!
To use Bruce's words Pikey was Special, an awesome player
Best utility in history
straight shooter
I always liked Pikey got the job done and very reliable no doubt:)
Good bloke Pikey
20:55ish. Great burn!!!

The Wakelin boys sleep in bunks.
That was pretty funny
@M Soccer: beloved by lady boys the world over.
Definitely a Real character
Every team needs a pikey .

Wwwwwww

Good bloke
The host seems to know a lot about casinos? Why no heat on these media people.
"all the past players from the past..."
when Pike had hair
He was an excellent player & comes across as a genuine bloke but his drink-driving record shouldn't be minimized as some young fella mucking up. He was lucky he wasn't jailed in 1996.
They lost the grand finale against port because they were not good enough not because that they had to attend the parade ,,
Great player treated like crap all his footy career
No
Dr
is Pike actually satan?
Seems like the host is a snitch . As most media people are. They and he are such liars and suck up to players.

@@mabiorcholappreciationpage Yeah, incredible year that was. Not sure I'll go there again.
Thanks 😂fellas. Yes he does. Lol. I bet most footballers have never been to Salamanca market. What a goose.
You made that up. You have made exactly the same comment about at least 3 players on this show. We know who is the flog mate 😂
Great interview, but why is he complaining about making 150k a year for doing something as useless to society as playing football?
Haha good point! However he was probably cut seeing some of his team mates getting a hell of a lot more of the pie so to speak. Totally agree though, i'd do anything for 150 grand Lol :P

Because other players were getting much more and he was a premiership player.
No, useless to society is studying Gender Theory or joining the Socialist Alternative.
*That's* being useless to society.
Who made the call to Sheehan?
