People make suggestions that Diesel was or is full of himself but I just reckon he was honest. I’m an unbiased Hawthorn supporter that loved watching this bloke play
Had lunch with Tom Hafey and a few of my other mates. We asked Tom why he left Geelong? We learnt that day the reason was Bob Davis. Bob Davis had to tick off on all decisions. Final straw Hafey had the team locked in for an important day. Davis wanted it changed. End result Hafey walked and took three players with him, Diesel being one. There were actually 11 players that wanted to go with Hafey.
I agree Williams should be remembered more as a legend, 40 possessions every week, and should have won 3 brownlows. One of the most consistent players ever.
@tubester4567 agree the older players get forgotten about too much because of the lack of coverage back then. Im 36 and missed pretty much all of his career but went back and watched a lot of his highlights and stats. Ridiculous career. Similar style player to a sam mitchell type?
@@skillsmachine9164 I didnt see enough of Sam Mitchell, but he was kind of like Gary Ablett Jnr, except tougher and harder. Just racks up possessions. He should already be in the Hall of Fame.
@tubester4567 hes a hall of famer no doubt but I reckon hes the opposite to gary jnr haha! Gary had blistering pace! Maybe similar in terms of ranking up touches but gary was more of a flair player while williams was more of a plodder. But still classy. 😃
1 player he mentioned as a quality player Gary buckenara! I concur as a hawks supporter an absolute champion! You hear names like brereton dunstall Ayres Langford hall plattan but the absolute best hawthorn talent at that time was without question Gary buckenara! Elite in every aspect! Skills speed leap decision making leader an absolute champion! You will not find a more complete player than bucky! I had number 11 on my jumper and jarman took over that digit when buck retired! 2 sensational players but Bucky definitely no.1 ! And greg Williams was no slouch!
Sheahan: so you think you should have won three Brownlows? Williams: Yes. No false modesty there. Seriously though, I admire his candour. As a Pies fan I hated him, but he sure could play and knew how to handle himself.
Same on both counts. And Sheehan at 40:27; “I’m glad you’ve moved on Diesel.” You asked him the fucking question Mike. He’s got every reason to be filthy. Russo robbed Williams blind that day. How petulant to you have to be to deny a bloke votes after he’s had 44 touches and kicked two goals?
Diesel had an undeserved reputation of being arrogant and aloof - he seems to me a very introverted guy, but was clearly absolutely driven to get the best out of himself as a footballer. As a Geelong fan, just about *the* great 'what if' is: what if Williams had stayed with the Cats? Wonderful, unique player.
Brilliant player and pretty decent coach it seems given the fact he mentored Tom Mitchell and look where Tom is now. Not many better players that have played the game.
Grub.....! Williams would be rubbed out for +15 weeks per year these days. The number of off the ball head contacts, punches and short fronts would see him shown the door.
Scraping the bottom of the barrel. Met him down in Hobart in 2015 at the Salamanca markets at a local cafe. Tried to cut the line in front of me. Total flog.
Turned 32 on grand final day 1995 and went on to have 31 touches and 5 goals. Sensational player.
Hi mate, there are only 195 countries
@J G Soccer is popular in 1358 countries.

Best handballer I have ever seen!....

@boganus699 cool story

Greg was a absolute gun and as a Bomber fan I dreaded what sort of game he would have.
Robbed of that 93 Brownlow!! Great player
super player one of the all time best.
Many thanks. As a Carlton supporter I am sad that we didn't take him in the early days, but he still did great things for us
Hi JG, there are only 195 countries mate
Dead set star, enjoyed watching him play
In my top half a dozen players I’ve seen. Absolutely brilliant and I couldn’t stand him.
I was a short slow footy player and my dad always said to play to your strengths like Greg Williams
best player to watch for me, always in the action and precise with his ball-handling, brilliant he was.
@M Soccer: beloved by lady boys the world over.

Top player who dished it out but also took it.
Fondly remembered by the McLaughlin family. Love to your family.
Diesel Power. Bendigo legend. Champion 🏆
Mike Sheahan at his very best here; seems to have a real understanding of Diesel's mindset
You know your Good... When you can call yourself a Star... Diesel was absolutely that...
Best of the best.
He's a Legend
How in hell did Wanganeen get 3 votes in round 18 vs versus Collingwood when Salmon was clearly BOG and did not get a vote.
Could have been the difference for Geelong in some of those lost grand finals. What a total disaster letting him go over 5 Grand :(.
Imagine him there in 1989
Hawthorn supporter but so mad he didn't get the 93 Brownlow

@@timtam8771that's why the brownlow is a joke of an award. Way too much bias in the voting, and yeah, this is the best example of that no doubt
Great player for the Blues
Very good player tenacious and tough as nails
My best ever player then Judd.

yep, well said.
@@ncf1 Similar focus to Barry Cable who also wanted to be the best player of his time ...and said as much.
You would have won at least 1 GF. Two of the bests of all time in the same team.
I came here hoping for a discussion about David Rhys Jones and boy, I’m not disappointed.
A fantastic pair of hands, only one whose hands were equal was Simon Black.
That’s. My poppy
Can someone explain how getting the ball from a contest and passing to someone else in the clear 40 times a game makes you a selfish player?
Does he call him "Cheezel" at the end?
That was his other nickname
Brilliant player and pretty decent coach it seems given the fact he mentored Tom Mitchell and look where Tom is now. Not many better players that have played the game.
How good are you mate ?
genius
Top player
Why has this not been raised by the afl ?
The flat, yep remember diesel at school, could play cricket too
Super player loved diesel
Super grub
Funny story from Michael Nettlefold but he himself got 28 disposals.
Not a disgraceful showing by any means.
It's Miss Thug himself..
He got railroaded alright. I never liked him but that's because he was an opposition champion.
Great player, but I'm pretty sure that he went feral with no good reason.
That just means that your teammates might cop one in retaliation.
He's dead wrong about the umpire incident, I reckon.
Greg Williams welcome. Now let’s talk about Gary Ablett and how much of a grub you are.
Dopey thug.
One of the games greatest. But also fabricated personal slights and vendetta's to justify to himself being one of the dirtiest ever to play the game.
How do you know he fabricated them?
Dead set champion. Coming from a bomber
Grub.....!
Williams would be rubbed out for +15 weeks per year these days.

Pity Geelong didn't keep him. Nowhere near freak-class tho...guys like Jarman, Daicos and Winmar.
MIKE IS WORSE THAT A BAD FART
Great player but awful interviewee. Boring as.
It was he was quite arrogant and boring gave nothing away or seemed to forget a lot
