Excellent work. That what happened to my same Dash cam mirror cigarette lighter charger. Actually the plastic inside (where the spring sits) broken, so the Negative & Positive port touch inside and caused fuse blowout. I was thinking the same way like you to change it to usb, search UA-cam and your video came up.
I got a question... I'm doing the same as you but the usb cord has 4 cables coming out: red, blue, white and green and the mini cable only has 2: red and bare copper. Which ones am I soldering together? TIA

Where did you get usb that is outlet is red and black wires , usually its 6 wires or so...
