    I can picture this guy telling people not to buy computers in the 1970s
    I mean, you invalidated owning a drone for traveling based entirely on one single country that doesn’t allow drones to be brought in...?
    I fly both my Spark and Mavic Air tons. Never breaking any laws. All it takes is due diligence, really.

      Izzy Nobre yeah plus he showed us his own videography from a drone that was amazing. Look, I get it, it’s harder and harder to fly your drone in many places, however, if you’re smart and able to learn local laws - you can get that amazing shot from the right places.

      In fairness, I think he's making some very valid points and I also predict that the situation is going to get a lot worse in the future. Gatwick Airport was closed recently because drones were spotted and hundreds of flights were cancelled. As I write, a drone was just spotted near Heathrow Airport and this has sent the authorities into panic mode with both the police and military being alerted. In Thailand, where I live, drones can be brought into into the country but any drone with a camera or weighing over 2kg must be officially registered and you are supposed to get the permission of the landowner over whose land you wish to fly (among other rules and regulations). As more rules and regulations are implemented it will become increasingly difficult to legally fly drones anywhere. Personally, I don't agree with the severity of the rules and I love watching good drone footage, but it seems that the authorities in most countries have an anti-drone agenda. phil.uk.net/thailand/drone-laws-in-thailand.html

      You mean "crowded" not "crouded." You miss the point of the video, which is understandable, people who can spell may understand it more easily. Pointing out restrictions is good information. The fines are steep in national parks and if you are off to Morocco to get drone footage, or many other countries for that matter, you may spend a few holiday nights in the crowbar hotel. The restrictions he pointed out are fact, not opinion. His conclusion is opinion, based on fact.

      I fucking hate this guy. He's incredibly opinionated and condescending.

    • @Macros1971
      @Macros1971 6 років тому +5

      I'm not sure that he's condescending, but he IS trying to share a perspective on the issue of the video. He speaks from his own experience and has done a great deal of research. I'm not sure that it's the worst thing in the world to be aware of the mistakes that others have made, or the facts that you may be unaware of, especially when it comes to a potential investment of $$$ and time, which could be a complete waste for some people, or a potential risk to public safety. I don't think he's TELLING any of us what we can or can't do, he's just trying to raise awareness of some things which the general public may not be aware of. He also advises people of the pros and cons of owning expensive camera bodies and lenses as well. I don't think he's trying to steer anyone to buy from certain camera manufacturers, or to negatively influence peoples' buying decisions. He's simply an educator with access to information and he chooses to share it with all of us. What YOU do with it, as an individual, is completely up to YOU! I think, weather anyone agrees, that it's a fact that not everyone SHOULD own a drone. Certainly there are people in better positions to make great use of drones, as well as people who will find the restrictions of drone use incredibly difficult to manage. If I could have a friend tell me, before I married someone, that it would end negatively, with a great deal of money lost and time invested, and I would come out on the other end devastated or unhappy, I think I'd appreciate that information beforehand. I respect Tony for what he does and for putting himself out there for scrutiny by the general public. I'm sure he's criticized a great deal by people who don't know him at all, but just don't like the message that he's delivering. He is trying to help and he's not TELLING anyone what they should or shouldn't do. He's just giving people information and letting US make our own decisions! That's a pretty outstanding thing to do, especially if there is very little to no benefit for him personally. Thanks for all you do Tony, Chelsea, Justin and all the crew! You guys ROCK!!!

    Take the FAA part 107 course even if you have no plans to use the drone for commercial purposes. Educate yourself, learn the airspace, buy some FAA sectional charts (maybe $3), download the Airmap app (free)...For every one place you can't fly a drone, there are 20 more that you can. I am in center city Philadelphia with PHL class B only a few miles away. I can fly my drone in the middle of the city with no problem and have found so many opportunities for spectacular shots. Just be aware of the surrounding airspace and the no fly areas. It is really not hard.
    The Mavic 2 Pro was one of the best purchases I have made, and I am glad I didn't listen to advice like this. This drone has also made me get out and explore more places, looking for fantastic shots, and discovering new areas in our home state and beyond.

    I’m a drone owner and let me tell you is TOTALY WORTH IT! is kinda like saying oh having a planes or a car are a hazard as well, they crash once in a while and there are restricted spaces you can fly over or park. So is that mean we should just stop using them? No because with everything they are downsides to it and having a tool that will benefit us as humans of course they are something to consider.

      More like he doesn't want people to buy one and get into the types of photography that he is making money off right now...... I got marries in Bridgeport CT and the Photographer/ videographer used a drone to beget shots of the hotel and building we were staying at.... so he isn't entirely correct. The FAA have guidelines about how close you can be to groups of people etc but as long as you follow them you can fly. I live in Ireland myself and close to an airport so I need to be careful in locations but can still fly. Just needed to register with the IAA.

      @evangore no not spent 1000's on rare wedding drone footage. I am just stating that it is permitted... the rules are you can't fly near 12 people or more and need to registered to fly as well. There are restrictions in certain parks however if you are away from an airport it is fine to fly.

    • @outlawrider5451
      @outlawrider5451 5 років тому +4

      @evangore do you even fly mate or are you just spouting your misguided beliefs???? You can't fly within the vicinity of an airport and other restricted areas however you can fly most other places including cities. There are tones of videos of people proving the police wrong when told they can't fly. I am registered to fly and once I obey a hand full of rules I can fly how I like.

    • @outlawrider5451
      @outlawrider5451 5 років тому +1

      @evangore also there are tones of people who claim you can't fly a drone legally in NYC and Casey Niestat proved that wrong a few months ago by doing just that....... just so you know... and that's probably the most restricted civil air space in north America since 2001... just saying.

    • @knuckleheadrider5505
      @knuckleheadrider5505 5 років тому +1

      evangore so then you actually are spouting on your own point of view and not on facts. The rules are 400 meters and not over a group of 12 people or more. Some national parks have unwritten rules about not allowing the flying of drones however. That is not legal and can be challenged. Furthermore perhaps you are referring to your local area and have not done your research properly. I personally live in Ireland which was the first country that had drone registration however that said l am legally registered to fly worldwide (and no I'm not commercial) . In fact up to this week the FAA could not stop hobbyists from flying a drone over downtown Huston one of the largest cities in America. They have now been given a new bill with will allow for stricter regulations on the 400 meter airspace but how that will look will take time. Ultimately you argument is flawed based on your lack of actual and factual information...

    I presently own several drones with different capabilities. A tiny, light Spark fits in a corner my backpack and serves as a camera that doesn't need a tripod, a cameraman for follow shots, a scout in wild country and a very useful photographic tool for spontaneous aerial photo ops (my second to last video and the swimming beavers I found at twilight). It would also serve as a flare in an emergency. The older, more powerful Phantom III is a good tool for observing wildlife, taking longer duration shots and shooting higher rez imagery, but it takes up a whole backpack so it's a special use device. But I've come to rely on them more and more in my work. My basic rules with drones are: 1. Get the DJI Care--I know a lot of drone operators who have used it and DJI does honor it, provided you haven't done anything foolish to have destroyed your drone, i.e., used third party software to control the drone (which is the cause of most fly aways) and that you send them the original, broken drone, 2. Never buy the latest drone (New drones are over priced, and older drones go at bargain basement, and anything from the Phantom III up is more than powerful enough to do most any photography), 3. Keep your software updated (DJI, if that is who you use) puts the flight zones into their software, so the drones alert you if you are in a no fly or low fly zone. I live in the Canadian woods, though, so my use is virtually unrestricted except for keeping below the maximum altitude. In a city it would be different . . . but you can fly drones in most places in Canada, though you have to stay clear of airports and military bases. Honestly, you can fly a drone in Montreal or any other large city here just fine, so long as you obey the rules to keep the drone within eye-shot and under 100 meters.

      However one expresses it, Soumyajit Ray is right: this channel is excellent. In my opinion it is the best comprehensive photography channel which I have found. There is a great deal of work, wit, intelligence and intellect put into its content - and much is fun learning. Tony / Chelsea / Justin never speak-down to their audience; they often given examples of their own errors; offer both sides of everything they discuss and I love their channel. I would argue that other channels can be used in conjunction - eg: landscapes Thomas Heaton and Nick Page; new photographers Mike Browne (and I am sure there are many others). But no one offers the comprehensive photography coverage this channel does (no, I am not family nor paid - damn!). It is very popular on the Net to knock things and, yes, of course the Northrups promo their courses and books - they need to earn a living to produce the YT vids. But no one that I have seen offers so much, so well, in depth and breadth as does the Northrup channel. Don't believe me? Look at their subscriptions and views stats soaring: we are not all wrong.
      Oh yes and trust? The integrity is built on honesty, reliability, that admitting errors (and correcting them) and offering various perspectives to most issues. Indeed, if you pixel-peep this channel (not the fab dog) I suspect you'll find, intelligence, intellect and integrity in every cell. Thank you T/C/J.
      OK, that'll do; I felt I had to say that but now I'll return to being a grumpy old cynic again - well if in Rome... if on the Net. Toodle Pip.

    Not everybody buys a drone for photography. I have no interest in photography. I am 59, and have been flying R/C aircraft (with wings) for decades. I now own a drone, and fly it for the same reason. The fun of flying it. I live just south of Phoenix, AZ, and have plenty of open desert to fly over. So you are probably wondering, "why fly over open desert, there's nothing to see" Very few of my R/C aircraft have had cameras on them. The fun is in flying them. My drone has a camera, and I have goggles that receive the images from the drone. So it's just like being on the drone. Or, if you want, you can fly it without the camera, as long as you keep it in sight. Kind of like flying an R/C helicopter. I would NEVER fly it over someone's house or yard. To me that IS spying, and should be illegal. People have a right to privacy on their own property.

      Sebastian Schwarz dude there is a whole area of Chicago from downtown Chicago lakefront to almost Evanston where you can fly. Check your sectional airspace map. You don't need to lift off in a park, a sidewalk with no pedestrians will do. The parks don't govern airspace. Once you get the rules down packed you can learn to work within them. Check out Ken Herons UA-cam channel.

    • @csebastian71
      @csebastian71 6 років тому +1

      kendallarroz Ken is awesome and funny. The only reason I go by the lake, is that I’m usually doing a timelapse for a couple hours of the sunrise. While I have that camera going, I’ll fly the drone. Anything that gets further south of Irving Park, the Police heliport comes into play. They told me once that I couldn’t so I didn’t fight it. Also,
      have seen them stop people flying in the park across the bridge at North Ave. Personally, I’ve been stopped once and it wasn’t pleasant. Difficult to tell a cop he’s wrong and doesn’t understand the laws. For now I’d prefer to stay under the radar and not be bothered.

    • @kendallarroz
      @kendallarroz 6 років тому

      Sebastian Schwarz I get ya. It's always best to avoid situations like that since not every officer is understanding. I actually try to fly close to sunrise or sunset since there is less activity on the lakefronts. Suprised they still bother you. But heliports are tricky because some are unmanned or you just can't call. The police I wouldn't mess with though. My rule of thumb is depending where the heliport is I'll stay under it's max height. And that is also my distance from it. But that's only if there is no number or control tower like person I can call. Hope you don't get discouraged. Keep looking around town tho. You'll be surprised where you can fly. But if you learn to read a a sectional map you really will be opened up to where you can fly. Sometimes there's pockets of good ol legal air. 👃💨👃💨

      I am in Chicago , I fly my drone every where , but I also check the app that tells me where is restricted, some areas have don’t fly and some ask you to call the air traffic control tower, you probably hit a 5 miles restriction and that’s why you got the police. But if you get informe you will be ok. Also fly where people don’t see you take off , because you get the haters. Once in the air I take my shots land it and go,

These days everyone seems to have their own or has a friend/family member with one, so no need to hire a guy that's licensed and insured. I still love them and use them for my own work which adds production value to my videos... but, they haven't added any income and have cost plenty. I love them still... but as a business enhancement... nope, not the bonus I expected or was told to expect. AS for those under-the-radar operators who fly where they shouldn't, the FAA simply can't keep up with them, so that's here to stay. Thanks Tony! Have a great summer!

      You need to go after a higher end market as a professional. Switch from residential to large commercial works and buildings. Add some extra sensors for niche target markets. Fly with two people: One controlling the camera, one flying. Now you're talking about services very few people can offer. Join the film industry. Invest in photogrammetry software... There is just one thing you can't do as an individual and that is the race to the bottom. You will NEVER win that one. You can't compete financially with a college student who does this as a hobby and would like an extra battery for his $400 drone.

    BUY A DRONE, BUY A DRONE. Don't listen to this guy. Most of you WILL be able to fly your drone almost anywhere. Airports have different regulations. Some you can get close, some you can't. Some you can get close, but have to stay under 100ft vs the max of 400ft (400ft is the legal limit), even though a DJI drone can go 1600ft and an Autel can go 2600ft. Also, YOU CAN FLY OVER STATE AND FEDERAL PARKS, YOU JUST CAN"T TAKE OFF OR LAND IN THEM. So, you can at least fly around the edges, go to 400ft , fly into the park as far as you can see your drone, and see the whole park from there. YOU CAN fly over people and moving traffic, BUT you can not maintain flight over people or moving cars. YOU CAN ONLY CROSS OVER THEM IF THEY ARE IN YOU PATH OF FLIGHT>. BUT, you can still see the cars and people simply by flying 100ft away, go to an altitude of 100-400ft and watch from an angle. This way you won't be over any cars or people. ALSO, How many of you are going to go to countries where you NEED to fly a drone. That's not gonna happen for the 99% of us. Lastly, who cares about your neighbors. Make friends with them!. Show them your drone. They'll eventually warm up to the idea. Tell them you use it for Neighborhood watch. Get to know your neighbors. Don't argue with them even if they don't like drones. Just tell them you won't fly near their property. It's no big deal. There are plenty of other areas to fly over. Besides cinema, photography and videography, they are just plain fun to fly and see things from a different perspective. OH, by the way, if you think you can spy, IT"S VERY DOUBTFUL. You would have to fly so close to people or a window, it would be obvious. Then you'll get arrested for invasion of privacy. Naughty Naughty. Don't even think about it. Make sure you know the laws. Avoid Manned aircraft. Stay away from groups of people and moving cars. Stay under 400ft. Get approval via internet before flying close to regulated airspace. Look up the other regulations yourself. HAVE FUN. IT'S A GREAT HOBBY.

      Don't have a drone, but if I were flush enough to afford a crash, I'd have one for aerial footage in far west Texas, where in my home county alone, 2265 sq. mi. of mountains and desert await armchair exploration. (That's 284 sq. mi. larger than Delaware.) As of 2015, there were 2156 people - less than one person per square mile in the county. One small state park to skirt, an observatory to circumvent out of respect for the astronomers, and ~1,000,000 animals, peaks, canyons, hoodoos, and grassland. Antelope herds, mountain lions, coyotes, bobcats - and nothing or no one to yell, "Drone!"
      The nearly-as-empty neighboring counties are even more vast.
      Sure would help us locate the unprepared hikers who go missing occasionally on Nature Conservancy acreage. To track and better control the feral hogs that have invaded and are ripping up creek beds and endangered plant species by the roots. Not to mention pressing out native animals populations. And to see exactly what goes on along a dry creek where evidence of foot traffic frequently appears on my property. Is it drug smuggling? Human trafficking? Illegal emigration? None of my business?
      Yeah, a drone would be useful on so many levels...

    It's amazing how many people are just utterly missing the point of this video. He's not saying you are not *allowed* to buy a drone. He's speaking to novices who have seen someone else with a drone or seen a UA-cam video and fallen in love with the idea of owning a drone without really thinking of the consequences and restrictions that might come with. He's saying, basically, don't buy a $1000+ piece of hardware unless you are very ready to potentially be out that money with no chance of getting it back. Don't fly your new toy around thinking you're going to get a cool shot of an airplane, or that you can take it with you to Yosemite or whatever.
    In short, the video isn't saying "don't buy a drone", even though that's the title. It's saying "think before you buy a drone."

    Greetings, I bought my first drone 3 months ago, it is a Mavic Pro combo. I love it since the 1st time I put it in the air. I liked soo much the experience that I bought a Phantom 4+ Obsidian to get better pictures and movies. I'm getting into the Cinematography and Aerial Photography as a special hobby. I used to fly RC Helicopters and airplanes but I need to confess that Drone is another animal, they offer me the freedom to take my shots. Now what I miss the most is the technic and knowledge to get more from my equipment. That's the truth though, I've considered buying a drone a few times but the prospect of losing something that expensive and also not being able to fly it a lot of places has deterred me a lot. Plus I know I would probably fly it over my house and neighborhood a couple of times and then never use it again making it an even bigger waste of money. I think a drone is good for professionals who shoot things for a living but for the average person just not worth it.

    You can't have drones IN the state parks here in Michigan. There's no law stating you can't fly OVER them though. As long as you don't take off or land (or crash land) inside the park, there's not much they can do about it. Besides, at 300+ feet up, nobody notices the damn thing anyway.

    • @silbay
      @silbay 6 років тому

      The state doesn't control the NAS which is the same with the Natl Park Service. The FAA does and they allow flight unless it is a restricted area on a sectional chart. People need to realize that just because something is marked on a sectional doesn't mean you can't fly there. That is only in restricted airspace and it is clearly marked.

  • @ericbraun4652

    That's what exemptions and waivers are for. Admittedly, Morocco isn't going to play ball and New York is very difficult if not impossible to fly in, but just being within 5 miles of an airport isn't a deal-killer. The FAA is rolling out LAANC to make all this easier too. I've had many commercial gigs (we do national car commercials) with no flight restrictions.

I chased it as long as I could, but it eventually flew out of sight. To this day, I wonder what happened to it.

      it's possible that it flew away if it wasn't GPS calibrated. it's known that if you don't calibrate the GPS and lock it in place, the drone will try to fly back to the location of where it was originally manufactured.. if it was created and tested in china, that's where it would try to fly back to... but due to it only having so much battery power, it can only go so far.

    actually, in Canada you are able to fly a drone depending on certain circumstances.
    - If you are not planning on flying in controlled airspace, over people, near people, or above 122 meters or 400 feet then you would only require a basic drone operators certificate and registering the drone with Transport Canada.
    - If you plan to fly in controlled airspace, near people, over people/crowds, higher than 400 feet, you would need an advanced operators certificate and still require registration with Transport Canada. On top of the more advanced exam, part of the advanced category is the need to pass an in person flight review to ensure said pilot has enough skill combined with knowledge to operate said drone in an advanced state.
    - Any drone under 250g takeoff weight is considered a micro drone, meaning they are not classed within the basic or advanced category, meaning you are not bound by the limits listed, but you are required to fly in a responsible manner that doesn't place people, planes, lives, or property at risk.

    The national and state parks should set aside a certain number of days a year as specific days, or groups of days, where a reasonable number of people could enjoy their toys for photography. • @repleh82
      @repleh82 6 років тому +1

      And who decides who these reasonable number of people are? Plus, if a bunch of drone flyers converge on a national park on given days a year then you have airspace problems and conflicting signals that could cause trouble. Then there is weather conditions to consider too. What if these "set days" happen to be rainy or high winds? You schedule your entire vacation around these "set days"? Most state parks will allow drone flying. All you have to do is ask permission beforehand. It seems to me like the individual who put up this video is just doing so to get subscribers. Saying that he will teach you how to fly your drone. It comes off as very arrogant. Just read your drone laws and follow them and you will find that you can enjoy your drone with little to no hassle at all. The number of drone "fly aways" is extremely low and that is even improving as the technology improves. So, if you want a drone just go and get a cheap one at first and learn how to fly. Then upgrade to a more professional drone and enjoy the sport.

Few months later flying it around the house...crashed it and broke propeller.....replaced the propeller and found that the replaced side could not get off the ground...so one point of contact on ground and it would just spin in circles....granted this was cheap and fun entertainment and a gift to boot...no real loss...I bought a Spiderman drone from the movie at Toys R Us for $25 and am ready for another round of crashing...it's what I do.

    Unfortunately this is mostly true.
    I was a responsible pilot of my Mavic Pro. And felt I was constantly under pressure to not fly it. There were a few places near my home that were 100% clear. But they get old quick.
    The dream of making it a third camera in my bag and using it anywhere is far from a reality due to all the legal junk.
    I actually wish there was a drone limited to maybe 100 FT that had no limits on where you could fly it. It would never interfere with aircraft and let me shoot basically anything I want.
    I don’t need a drone with 2 mile range in all reality. Although I got some amazing shots in Turks and Caicos far from shore id give it up to have no other restrictions.
    I sold my Mavic Pro and don’t plan on buying another one.

      The limit of 400' already stops it interfering with aircraft, that's why the limit is 400'. Aircraft aren't permitted to fly lower than 500'.
      The restrictions are because of privacy and safety concerns, both of which are pretty overblown.

      Luke C i know the 400 Ft limit prevents interference from air craft. But it doesn’t prevent me from taking off in a no fly zone, or when there is a VIP no fly zone temporarily 30 miles away from where i live. My suggestion is to limit my drone to 100ft take off. And allow me to always take off, in all situations.

      Actually most of it is NOT true and if you really learned the rules you would see that. 400' is NOT a limit and the FAA clearly states that if you can read. It is also not a limit for 107 pilots within 400' of a structure. The youtube channels are full of know nothings that either want you to do things their way or pay them to teach you to do it like this clown Tony.Aircraft are not restricted to flying above 500' Luke, once again read the law.

    I've resisted buying one so far but I do keep thinking about it. Any insight on the DJI clones on Wish? The pricing seems too good to be true but 50 bucks flying away seems better than $500 plus flying away.

      teleking58 I’ve seen the drones on wish. If any of the reviews are an indicator, they are cheap junk made from flimsy material and low resolution cameras. Also considering most of the stuff I’ve bought doesn’t come in its original packaging, there’s a good chance it could get broken in transport. It’s best to read the product reviews, NOT the store reviews. If no product reviews are available, you can bet it’s junk.
      With that being said, I did get a pretty good 10 stop ND filter through them.

      With electronics, you almost always get what you paid for.
      There's no way a 500 dollar laptop will be as good as a 2500 dollar laptop, and the same goes for 50 dollar vs 500 dollar drones.
      Now, maybe you need a cheap practice drone. That's totally possible and a legit decision. But don't expect the amazing drone footage you see on UA-cam. Those people invested way more.

      MrNicoJac great point regarding use for practice. I often buy items from Wish, not because I think they will be good quality, but because I think they might work well enough for me to determine whether it is worth the investment of a good quality version.

      Kind of what I was thinking. I think a small investment cheap drone would give me something to play with and help me decide whether or not it was worth investing in a good one. I'd hate to drop a thousand bucks and then decide it wasn't really for me.

    You can fly a drone near air ports you just need to get clearance and it takes only a couple of min. Most have different heights you can fly depending how close you are within that 5 miles from the air port zone. The furtherest part you can fly up to 350 or 300 depending on airport as you get closer like within a mile or so, altitude drops to like 50 feet. But you can still request to fly up to the permissible alt for the location within the zone. Real quick to get access, now if that is where you live it will most def restrict your flying.Although he does have a lot of good points lol. Luckily no one has said anything to me but one neighbor always looks at me all weird. Love your videos btw, always informative.
