Suggest a read of what Dick Best had to say about this tour and the selection process. He also gives an insight into Will Carlings mindset. On one occasion Carling was told he would be room sharing with Nick Popplewell, he refused saying he would not share with a prop...On another occasion Carling told Best that he wanted to go home. Best told him he could do what he wanted, but if he did he would never play for England again. He stayed. Before the tour I asked Paul Ackford how he thought the Lions would go. He said that if they stayed `together` they could do very well. They did not stay together so they did not do well. They had one decent team in the squad, no more. People like Damian Cronin thought they were on holiday and seriously affected the cohesion of the group. This was not a happy tour.
How the game has moved on. Ruck, maul, handling(was the ball constructed differently at that time.. they had real trouble)tackling, referring, line-out .. It seems to me after 60 years of loving the game, the only aspect the game that has gone backward is the scrum. 5 seconds to form and finish to the 5 minute waste of game time of today. Get it sorted World Rugby.
That particular Adidas ball would not have been so familiar to the Lions players as they first appeared in the 1991 WC..they were lighter and narrower than the Mitre balls that most of the Lions regularly played with domestically and in the 5N..I think in 80s and early 90s, the only top tier NH team that played with Adidas ball was France.
The ball handling and retention was better than the 1970s when it looked like they were playing with a bar of soap! Also, 1970s line outs were like a bunch of blokes making a bad queue outside a chip shop.

What a player Clarke was
When the Lions took the lead you could hear the CHOKE in the commentators voice.
Monster of a game. That Underwood try though...express train.
And Ioujan and Gavin! Steam trains all!
Forgotten how good Ieun Evans was!
How could you? Smooth as silk! Ieun wins games.
@@maxwellfan55 and ace tackler!
Haha they amended the footage to remove the close-up of Allen Prince giving the finger when re ran in for his try.
For the first 55 mins of the game the Lions looked like 15 complete strangers in search of a team then they suddenly clicked..2 tries in 2 minutes!
Hungover?
Great Players Gavin Hastings and Will Carling linking up well.
Tough luck Maoris. Superb Lions! Wingers!
Lack lustre lions in the days before running with the ball was invented.
41:28 😂😂😂 he was like hey where's my legs gone? I better tuck my head in to avoid a face plant
