Thanks for this post. I saw this a while back but came back again to watch. Trying to look at this match objectively in hindsight, I would say that the Boks just about shaded this encounter in territory and possession stakes and ultimately, in the scoreline.

Errol Tobias was phenomenal. For some reason I always had him as a wing. What a fantastic flyhalf commanding the game.

Risking to annoy the "Good old times brigade" here but do you notice how low the quality of rugby is? People rave about physicality and brutality of the game and that's fine but doesn't it mask the inability to create a nice attack and sustain some continuity ? The kicking is comically bad, some of the tactical decisions in open play (or the lack of those) are incredibly stupid for a lack of better word. I know they're amateurs but still...compare this to the late 80's early 90's game. Think rugby really made a big quality leap then, the game changed and for the good. And is on a upwards curve since then.

I don´t quite buy into the "Elder btother/Younger brother" modern cliché that is circulating. Both countries had common interests! Argentina, too far away and not British in culture like AU or NZ, countries much further away, was not important, but needed good Int´l competition, and so did isolated SA. In those days Apartheid was a big issue. Political pressure forced most countries to turn their backs on the Boks, and regarding Human Rights, that was the right thing to do. But it hurt SA rugby, and those that forbid playing against them, were dying to play them! But they did not! Argentina, always unruly, spontaneous, were rather worthwhile "sufficiently" respectable opponents, the next best thing after a Tier 1 country. So, in order to stay more or less fit in body and mind, Argentina was welcome to get thrashed for the honour of playing SA. How to circumvent Int´l dictates? Make a no single nationality team, but a multinational team. Let´s add 1 good player from our neighbour countries, and call the team SUDAMERICA XV! Smart! It didn´t fool all, but many were happy, only in SA and ARG, though. I don´t know if the Uruguayan, Paraguayan, Chilean or Brasilian played in any of the Provincial matches, and nobody ever interviewed them to get their comments. Richy dixit!

Only guys older than 60 will understand, if they remember, the Rules in those days! I started when a try was 3 points, and ended at 4.... Later went to 5. How can we compare scores from olden times against today´s? I can only think of measuring a score not by the value of a try, or a goal, or a penalty, but by # of tryes, goals and penalties. If someone scored 39 points, or 10 unconverted 3 point tryes and no penalties, today that would mean 65 points......

How times have changed ! I was 16 years old and had the great privilege of meeting this All Black team ! Andy Leslie ! Gentleman! Was in love with Brian Williams and Kit Fawcet 😍. Have all the memorabilia from that tour. Although a South African and kept a scrapbook on Gerald Bosch , I fell in love with the All Blacks !❤❤❤

One bright spot during an otherwise lamentable period for English rugby. Grand Slam the next year, then another 8 years before we saw the first stirrings of anything even remotely worth watching. I feel sorry for Nigel ST, my mother died from dementia, but his commentary was a standing joke. I suppose the saving grace was that we only had to listen to him for a max hour on Sundays except during the 5 Nations.
