I adore my Luminance pencils. I also love my Holbein and Derwent Drawing pencils. They are a joy to work with and I don’t care if they make me an expensive date 😁😁😁
Perhaps the best way to describe the difference between Luminance and Polychromos pencils is to compare them to gouache and watercolor. Luminance definitely has the quality of gouache with an immediate opaque coverage that causes the color to pop. Polychromos have a more transparent quality like watercolor and are best applied in layers. A color pencil artist on UA-cam called Lachri Fine Art has done several videos over the years describing the different qualities and why she uses both in her practice. If I could only pick one, it would be Polychromos. Though it takes more work to layer the colors, Luminance feels chalky to me in a way that I haven't gotten used to but am trying to learn to tolerate. Also, I love the color match system of Faber Castell products. However, I think one of the greatest advantages of the Luminance line is they provide pigment information as does the Derwent Lightfast line. I find that I prefer the Derwent Lightfast over the Luminance pencils because, to me, they have a smoother application compared to Luminance. Nevertheless, both lines offer a beautiful color range with hues unique to each, so I have a collection that I've built by purchasing open stock from both lines. But if you prefer a pencil that feels like a gouache and you don't need a lightfast pencil, nothing beats a Prismacolor. They are the Sennelier oil pastel of pencils, creamy and opaque.
Thank you so much for this lovely detailed comment! It’s so informative and I’m sure I’m not the only one reading these comments who appreciates learning more about these pencils. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🫶💙
Well actually… I think you may be saving money! 💰 Expensive art supplies pay off in the long run, don’t they? 😉 Those will last and you will treasure them 🎉 I am delighted to have discovered your videos recently, thanks to your watercolour book reviews. I love and collect art books too. Keep up the good work! 👩🎨 💙
Thank you, what a delightful comment! I definitely find myself reaching for my supplies and using them more often when I buy the better ones - and it does increase the pleasure of making art. A pleasure hearing from you, and thank you again for sharing! 💙🫶
I loved this relaxing swatching video. Seeing all the beautiful colors along with hearing your calming voice was a great diversion from the craziness of the outside world. I was especially intrigued by the Turner Acrylic Gauche. The dark green, red, and gold reminded me of colors from a Renaissance painting. I look forward to seeing the projects you make with these. And as usual, your little dogs were charming! Nina looked so cozy and made me want to curl up and go to sleep and I’m thinking that Renley must be high-spirited from hearing his scurrying paws in the video. He must want to party, party, party! 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for your lovely comment, i’m also very excited to try the Turner acryl gouache for a piece soon - and that is so true, I also got rennaissance vibes from it! Nina and Renley also thank you being mentioned, and yes, you’ve got him spot on, Renley is little party boy! 🥰🥳🫶
I love hearing which supply appeals to you! And luminance has been such an eye opener for me, I can’t seem to put them down anymore and find myself always reaching for one even just for doodling! 🫶
Please try all these water soluble products with watercolor paper, to see the difference. The Ecoline works better on watercolor paper. Ecoline is liquid watercolor in a brush pen. I love this video.
Thank you for mentioning this, I was very confused by the ecolines when testing them in the Strathmore for this video. I will try them in my watercolor sketchbook next then. Thanks for the great advice! 👍
party - i love swatches. I have a large selection of Derwent Inktense, both in pencil and block. I do love them. I also have a set of Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils. They are good, but the Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelles are better. I have a small selection of them. I recently purchased a few of the Neocolor II crayons. I like them, but they are more opaque than I am accustomed to - quite similar to gouache. I have been experimenting with several brands of coloured pencils, a few at a time (Derwent drawing pencils and Derwent Lightfast as well as some Luminance and Holbein).
Thanks for watching and thank you for sharing your experience! I also am discovering more and more fondness for the Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelles since I started using them last month, they are a dream to work with. Neocolor II is still a hit and miss situation though 😅!
You’ll have a much better time using a cotton based watercolour paper that has a decent amount of sizing when using the Ecolines (and any other water-soluble media). Sizing gives you more working time and you’ll have a lot of fun with these tools. 😊
I loved learning this, thank you for sharing your knowledge! And yes, you were right! I tried it this weekend and this is definitely a better user experience on watercolour paper 😉
I have the Caran D Ache Neo color II. A word of caution with them. They are not light fast despite with the company says this crayons are not light fast. I had mine sitting in the window to test them and unfortunately they faded. They are great in a sketchbook, but nothing you’re gonna hang up on the wall.
Hi hun I have both sets of the polys and the lumerance colouring pencils I have a lovely colour of artist grade pencils I do adult colouring in.. thank u for sharing ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxx

I totally agree! I love these pencils and let’s agree that being an expensive date is a compliment 😉🫶
Lovely haul, great experimenting! It is good to try new things.
Thank you! Trying new things is the best, and it’s one of the things I love about being a beginner 🥰🫶

Daniel Smith makes a water color stick that would travel well.
I saw! I have my eyes on those now, and also the Faber Castell gelato sticks which look very juicy… 😉🫶
