I tabbed out the whole song to the isolated track. Then I checked it against the studio track to see if anything stood out as specifically right or wrong. I want to trust but verify the isolated track. From there, I took a look at live videos to check positionings and verify the isolated track. The last video shows Duff really well and confirms all the big-picture stuff for me. There are too many live videos to go through all of them though
    • Sweet Child O' Mine (B...
Isolated track of Duff's playing. Made it easy to tab the majority of the song
The tone also is a bit more throaty like a jazz bass, so he probably used the jazz pickup of a p/j bass in addition to using a pick and a chorus effect
Overall this definitely sounds like it could be Duff. Bar 80 & 92 beat 4, bar 161's octave, the lack of prominence of the open strings/16th notes, and some small things give a little doubt.
I will say, the chorus does peek through here and there, the tone is right, and bar 170 all line up. Nothing sounds explicitly wrong except possibly the octave in bar 161 (which could just be me questioning it)
    • Duff Mckagan and Krist...
can't really see the fretboard, but good shot of general positioning and his picking hand.
He plays the consistent open strings that the isolated track shows. He does take some liberty in the part (understandably).
    2:42 - bar 39-20 by frets 10-12
4:56 - solo, shows the 16th notes that are hard to hear on studio track, but there in isolated bass
    • Adler with Duff McKaga...
    1:20 - bar 39-40 is by frets 10-12
    1:34 - bar 48 by fret 12
    2:18 - bar 96 by fret 12
3:03 - bar 128-129 by fret 12, before also shows general solo positioning well
3:39 - by fret 8 on E(b), not fret 3 in solo for octaves
4:37 - good shot of the bridge
    • Guns N' Roses - Sweet ...
    official music video
    0:33 - 5th fret, kramer bass
    2:03 - 5th fret
    2:07 - 3 to 5, pick
2:53 - some of solo, shows the 16th open E(b) notes there
    4:04 - fret 5, p/j bass
4:07 - mid neck for Outro
4:30 - low neck shift up
    • Watch Krist Novoselic ...
    shows Duff really well
2:04 - bar 48-49 position. Duff does the octave thing here that's not on the isolated track
    4:06 - 111 & 112 position, then solo position & rhythms
4:40 - 5/7 positioning to lead into 2nd half of solo (bar 128/129)
5:48 - bar 173 positioning of the triplets
    • Guns N' Roses - Sweet ...
    6:28 - bar 161 around fret 7
    Thanks for watching! Enjoy :)

Awesome dude!! One of the 1st songs I taught myself back in the day when all we had were book printed tabs and cd stop/reverse playback!! You make it easier for the next generation of aspiring bassists, bravo!

Thanks! In these videos I have the tab as a reference so it makes it easier to record. As for a live setting, it takes a lot of repetition (depending on the song) and pattern recognition/remembrance. Most songs have a similar structure made up of Intro, verse, chorus, Outro, and possibly bridges or pre choruses.
The verse is usually the same as the others (or similar enough to play it the same and then learn and work in the details), same for the chorus and pre chorus. Interludes are often the same as the intro. Intro is often the same as a verse or chorus. If it’s unique, then that can make it easier to remember, because then it’s catchy (the hook).
And then listening to the other parts playing will help you recognize when to switch to the next part of the song
