    Hi Matt, thanks for sharing. I actually watched your first review of this device and then other devices as well before I decided to purchase the Karoo 2 about 9 months ago.
    I’ve been very happy with the device. I ride once a week (in Thailand), 60-75 KM, moving time 3-4.5 hrs and elapsed time around 5-6 hrs. I usually have the screen brightness around 50-60%, using maps & navigation around 80% of time during a ride. At the end of the ride, the remaining battery would be around 60%, so no issues with the battery life for me with the types of ride that I do.
    Pricing wise, 9 months ago I thought it was the most value for money compared to Garmin 830 and Wahoo Roam, but I do understand it might better compare it to Garmin 1030.
    What I love about the device:
    1) the screen is so big and clear for navigation
    2) the functionalities and menus are so intuitive (this is my first bike computer with GPS navigation)
    3) easily connected to Komoot and Strava
    4) The dashboard is simple, and I use it primary for updating the maps from Komoot while I use Strava for analysis of my ride
    5) the climber feature is amazing before and during a climb
    6) perhaps not directly about the device, but their support team is truly amazing. I had two tech issues which I didn’t know how to solve (duplicated routes from Komoot and re-routing with navigation not moving along my current location) both times their support team replies to my inquiries very quickly, and offered quick and easy instructions on how to solve my issues
    7) the constant updates make me feel like I’m getting a better device every 2 weeks
    8) how easy it is to connect with various sensors. I have a Garmin Varia and Giant dual sensors connected to it. Just turn on or activate the sensors, then it is so easy to find them on the device, then connect!
    9) last (I think) but not least the way I can custom the profiles with maps and data pages, and how they simulate like on a real ride before I decide which one I want
    10) the re-routing feature is very quick and helpful when I’m off courses.
    What I don’t like or perhaps opportunities for improvement:
    1) the turn by turn notifications and Garmin Varia alert for a vehicle coming up from behind are with the same beeping sound (not sure how it works on other devices), but would be great if it could be by different sound
    2) the USB-C plug/cover. You’re right, so small it is easy to loose. I lost my after 7 months (not sure whether I should be proud that I held on to it for so long). There should be a way to attach it to the device by a cord, but I have solved this by buying the plug/cover in bulk just in case I loose it again
    3) since I live outside US, it has been very difficult to find a silicone case for protection against dropping it
    Very few things to dislike for the way that I use this device.
    You can check out my Strava profile (www.strava.com/athletes/tmuadchaiyaphum)to see how it has been used since November’21.

      Totally agree. I just need a reliable GPS device that displays some basic stats of my ride and a worry-free battery life is a must. Don't want any "advanced" feature that I rarely use. Also, I'm always suspicious of updates and frequent updates is annoying (even Wahoo's update cycle a bit annoying), because often, update fixes things and breaks others, especially when you introduce new features. That said, Wahoo devices, for what they offer, are overpriced in my country. I'll stick with my Bolt v1 until it dies. (I love the customizable LEDs and the fact that battery lasts even with the backlit on all day. Useful stuff don't need to be high tech.)

    I don't own the device, so I am going to write in speculation on what I saw mentioned. Given, the device is built on top of android operating system, which is not battery efficient by nature, it should be expected to see a reduction in battery life. Android is built for a wide range of category for devices, so it makes it very difficult to fine tune the balance of performance and battery life for all devices. It is like comparing Windows to Mac, Mac has better battery life than most Windows laptops but Mac OS is tuned only for hardware that Mac's use. In general, computers don't handle extreme heat very efficiently, so I would expect that there would be some lost of battery health when it comes to these bike computers as well.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  Рік тому +1

      Good comparison Nick! It’s a great cycling computer in my opinion. And I love the amount of updates it gets. It has been a bit so maybe Hammerhead will update the Karoo 3 hardware at some point. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Good review. I'm a Karoo user since the first version. I've also used multiple Garmin services and the Wahoo Bolt. I think the Karoo has more to offer in the future than the other devices. Yes it's always evolving but with the OS being Android there are fewer limits on capabilities.
    The cons of the device is very accurate the biggest being battery life but you can use battery saver mode and almost double the battery life per charge. The screen is easily the kink in the armor when it comes to battery life.
    I'm using your link to get the rubber covers. I agree the cover should be connected to the device from the start. Sweat can easily ruin the device.
    I personally like their device locking system but I don't want to buy all knew mounts. 🤷🏽‍♂️ So I keep up with that adapter. But like many I've broken my Karoo mount due to material non-impact failure.
    Funny that the dashboard has somewhat improved over the years, but it's very limited when compared to others. I assume Karoo knows most uses a third party app or service so why bother. I think an app would improve the speed of using the various settings but not a deal breaker. How often does one go do diving into the settings? I will say that the Chrome browser extension is hands down one of the best if not the best mapping features of any cycling computer. The ability to one click and have a route that's on screen saved is perfection!!
    I'm a techy so I'm looking forward to what else Hammerhead will bring. Yes it's not perfect, but it is interesting.
    Great review and looking forward to more videos.

I have had a Polar Vantage M2 during my time with Polar and during that time it surely has received updates: received a couple of firmware updates related to bug fixes and stability, received additional languages support, and new features as well, like notifications during training and sleep wise,
      They are surely not perfect, and their release cycle is insanely slower compared to companies like these, but they are surely moving on the right track from what it seems. I am planning to change my Vantage M2 in the upcoming months, and it is probably going to be another Polar watch, probably the Grit X Pro should they have not launched an update on that line yet, because I like their metrics, the ecosystem and the support I have received over the years.

    I’ve had this and the 1030+, there is really only one thing that gives me pause: live tracking requiring a SIM card. I know it’s a functionality issue in that this thing is running android and it thinks it’s a phone so it REQUIRES an app that would allow it to transmit locations to some other device and vise versa. I’ve traded emails with their tech team about it and they say it’s on their list for later this year.
    It kind of makes me want to grab it and use it occasionally. Anyone have a good suggestion for a dirt cheap SIM card option? I’m sure as hell not throwing a Verizon sim in there.
    The battery only gave me an issue on a century ride. Running with tracking, navigation, and normal connected accessories killed my battery in like 4 hours. I will say that having the radar running and constantly pinging the computer was probably the culprit, but it does speak to the battery issue. I’m really considering trying it again and then using my 1030+ for long days. The reality is the garmin has the opposite problems: lasts a long time but you have to shoot someone in the leg to get them to release a software update and be damned if something new shows up.

    Awesome review. I have no interest in biking other than 30 min a week on paved trails, but I watch bc you do such a great job explaining it all.
    The screen looks awesome honestly. You did an absolutely fantastic job describing all of the pros and cons in full, and with such detail that applied to regular life.
    Genius add in w the solution on the port - that’s super useful.
    And ugh yes so well said the high up CTO person that is going to die on a hill w a concept that doesn’t make logical sense. I felt that way about Polar’s backlight issues for the longest time.
    And last - your video editing and intros are just so stellar, your transitions. It’s amazing I can’t do much of any of those things with my standard iMovie editing ha ha.
    And post post script - thank you so much for posting a video at 10 o’clock at night so that I can pause working on my tax returns for a little device detail goodness :)

    I have just bought a Karoo 2 and I have , in general, set it up sucessfully . However one thing that annoys me about it is the fact that already i have lost the little rubber spud to stop the rain and dampness getting into the apparatus . Could it not be attached? A good honest opinion of the karoo and thank you .

    Just did my first ride today with the K2 and I miss my Wahoo Bolt V2 already.
    1st complain- my ride today did not automatically sync with the Sram app, I had to dl and upload the ride to my Sram app. Also, the AXS gearing is not showing up on the Sram app (not sure if this is on my part, if not, hopefully this will get fixed now that Sram acquired Hammerhead)
    2nd complain- pretty much just like the 1st one, the ride did not sync to my Specialized App.
    Still learning how to use the device.
    Definitely getting the USB cover with the strap.
    Also, does anyone know where can I get a GoPro mount that will attached to the K2 mount? ✌🏼

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  2 роки тому +1

      I haven’t seen a GoPro mount for this mount yet. I also had the Bolt V2. That’s a great little device. This K2 is very different. I’d suggest you be patient on some of the syncing issues. I do think you’ll enjoy this device. It’s not perfect but it’s got some really impressive features. Let me know what you think as you keep using it. 👍

    Hi Matt! Great review! :) One little observation, according to Hammerhead the unit is waterproof without the rubbercap. I think at first they don't even include it in the package, they put it in because of user demand.
    And an of topic question, will you test the Polar Pacer Pro?

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, but I’ve read some people that have had water damage in this way. 😬 So I’d be hesitant.
      I am testing the Polar Pacer Pro! I wasn’t able to post a review on Wednesday because the unit was lost in the mail and I hadn’t had enough testing time. My initial thoughts are that it’s pretty good. If you like Polar, this is a good affordable option. Running Power, swimming, and all the other Polar goodness like sleep tracking. 👌 I’ll try to get an initial review out as soon as possible. Thanks!
