The first clip was Joe Sullivan, a power lifter a few years ago. Got some pretty sever nerve damage from it. Since then he’s recovered and broke the squat record in his weight class and ack benching close to or more than before that video.
I can understand people are scared to show theyr weekness to strangers both mental and physical, usually most of the time mental. Is a biological way to defend yourself and Is correct. But for God DAMIT dont fool yourself thinking you can squat 150 kilos in public if your legs are weaker then a 12 yo girl. Do an home gim until you get good e enough to not be ashemed on ublic anymore and start with no weights on the bar
And the funny thing is that squats like that don’t give you a squat! The only exercise he was giving his spider legs, was in his mind whilst masturbating his ego.

Worse injury I ever saw was a good female athlete in the smith machine doing calf raises… She was covered in sweat, bar slipped dislocated both shoulders, then both elbows, then carried on down and severed both achilles. Whenever I saw anyone in the smith after that I told them the story (and she was an exceptionally good athlete, not a muppet), and put the safeties on.
My apartment gym only has a smith machine, which is actually wild they even have one. For some reason they got that instead of just a squat rack. I don’t know what happened in that video, I just don’t like the smith machine because it lightens the load on the way down. So now I just use the cable machine for squats and have found the force pulling me off balance is actually really good when you get deep
I squat in a smith machine, but i dont ever put a lot of weight on it. Today was 140lbs sets of ten. It doesn’t help my stability for when i go to to freeweight squats, but i get a good workout
Yeah when I started weight training and jogging, people did it to help them in their sport, but I just enjoyed the training. Unfortunately one can't be good at both as running hinders muscle development. At least, I never found the right balance between strength and fitness.
Planet fitness at least in north Dakota the area I'm in doesn't have squat racks, so you have to use the Smith machine. Also no bench either got to use the Smith machine for that as well. It's ruff out there
Same in NY- I think they're all set up that way. I don't understand everyone's beef with those systems; you would think they're inherently safer, right?
@@christiantrapani6145 they are safe if the side pegs are in place, but they can be moved to the bottom and literally it's as unsafe as a regular bench. Plus the hate it that you don't get stabilizing muscles because the Smith machine helps with that, so you are technically weaker overall. You can push more weight on a Smith machine that you normally couldn't do on a regular bench setup.
I bombed a squat once, hit the bottom too quickly I guess and it felt like the sole of my shoe shifted and down I went on the Save Me Jesus bars. Wasn't even too heavy for me. Reracked it, restarted the set and finished two more. Bought some solid sole shoes in the next rest period. 🤣 I wish I had a video of it.
Squats are dangerous, unpleasant and technically flawed, but they offer great gains. The thigh muscles are under the greatest stress in their weakest position. The lower back is highly stressed, especially for tall people. But as a compound movement like deadlifts, they put great stress on our bodies by highly stressing some of the biggest muscle groups in our bodies. If the relative intensity at the bottom of the squat was present at the strongest position of the quads, the exercise usefulness would be incredible.
Gym culture is so much better than MMA/BJJ culture. People are generally too young to remember, but weightlifting gyms used to be fucking awesome back in the day. Gym guys don't hate each other openly or secretly. They just aren't that insecure.
I've been doing squats with the Smith Machine for nearly 20 years. I only do plates and it is typically once every 2-3 weeks that I do such an exercise, but I like to know what is the reason for not doing so? I have never had joint pain, tears, no injuries minus the traditional soreness. My form seems to be the same as those doing squats with the free weights.
I lift alone and did smith squats, had partially torn my hamstring, until I felt comfortable again. The Smith only does linear movements so it doesn’t fully engage. The Smith isn’t truly made to go ham with weight either.
As someone who regularly lifts 300ikg....PLEASE dont have shit bars in your gym!!!! Love you EDDIE!!! Real Talk, I look like I could be your brother and I have some GREAT friends who could also pass for family. Would love for a chance to meet you in the the Northeast of the U.S.
I've always done squats on the smith machine although I'm not a powerlifter by any means, I train for health. I don't understand why you see it so wrong, I think it's an excellent option to train alone, what is important is not to be so stupid as to overload yourself with weight and it doesn't take away from the fact of learning a good technique.
3:00 just so u know, i used to tdo the same thing, the gym i used to go had no squat racks! no joke, we only had smith machine :D either you do it on Smith machine or with dumbell squats :D
I do smith machine squats every now and then. Obviously I much prefer normal barbell, but when using the smith machine, I get a lot deeper and it's really good for hypertrophy style training. You can of course use the hack squat machine (which is also a great bit of kit), but you're still going through the same exact movement on the smith machine than you would be using the barbell. It just provides you with that stability that might actually be useful for a beginner in the gym.
But you aren't doing the exact same movement in a smith machine. Using a barbell, your body will squat through its natural range of motion, using the smith machine you're trapped into the path of the rack which is not natural and asking for an injury. Plus you don't use any of the stability muscles you do when using a barbell, and when you eventually try to squat free weight the smith machine movement pattern that's been ingrained will not transfer to the barbell. To summarize, there literally no reason whatsoever to squat in a smith machine over a barbell squat. If you can't squat, learn, it's a basic essential human movement pattern that everyone able bodied should be able to do. I can barbell squat perfectly comfortably, but when I tried to use the hack squat, it immediately hurt my knees and lower back being trapped into an unnatural movement.
@@paulharper4196 i can barbell squat perfectly fine and do it twice a week mainly for strength training. I agree that the hack squat ain't great for the knees, which is why I use a pendulum. It's all about variation. If I want to solely target my quads, a Smith machine narrow stance squat ain't a bad idea as you just said, you're not using any stabilizing muscles. Overall, nothing beats the barbell squat, but you shouldn't just dismiss using the Smith machine, it has a function and can be used for variety in any program.
@john hodgson yes because even pros dont know everything. why do they have coaches? Also some of the biggest names in bodybuilding use smith machines. I wont even debate or argue the facts. I do this enough over workingout and its getting slightly annoying..have a nice day.
I can tell right off the bat these people take more weight than they can handle. I was glad I was trained the right way. I don’t see them wearing knee wraps and a good way to blow your knee caps out under excessive weight.
