How to Deal With Relatives On Thanksgiving w Woodmizer Sawmill

- Thanksgiving is usually a time to spend with family. For some of us, family can be a joy to be around. For others, family can be obnoxious. I made this Thanksgiving Special to help people deal with annoying relatives on Thanksgiving. We will be using a Woodmizer LT15 sawmill, a chainsaw, a peavy, some trees, logs and lumber. We will sort of use a pile of firewood and a firewood splitter. Oh yeah, and the worst thing of all, some flitches.
Any real firewood guy knows, that pine is fine. It burns just fine. It's great for camp fires. As long as it is perfectly dry, it won't clog up your chimney. There are far too many firewood snobs. You burn the best wood that is readily available in your area.
As a grower of Ponderosa pine; I concur.
Douglas Fir here. It's great stuff..😁👍
Douglas Fir, Ponderosa pine, incense cedar, I burn it all and concur.
“As long as it is perfectly dry, it won't clog up your chimney”.
Any resinous wood like spruce or pine has a different sort of sap than hardwood. Seasoned maple or oak or any other typical hardwood has no residual sap, often called pitch, the way spruce/pine/fir does. That pitch needs to burn extremely hot to not cause problems in a chimney. I burn very dry spruce in the spring and fall when I just want a quick fire to take the chill off. These are ‘wide open damper and draft’ fires. That half cord or so of spruce creates more creosote than the 4 cords of dry hardwood we burn all winter under varying draft and damper settings.
@@brucea550 I guess it depends on how much creosote is too much. When burning 8 cords of white fir and jeffrey pine, and burning it hot, I'd get a baseball size amount of creosote when cleaning the chimney at the end of the season. OTOH our renters had oak or something, but maybe it was wet. And with the smaller house, they must have dampered it down. That chimney was clogged with creosote chunks a big bigger than popped popcorn. And it was coated like tar inside the wood stove.
A hot fire really takes care of things, keeping the glass clean, the chimney clean, and the exhaust clean. And once it's hot, it really chews through the not so perfect stuff, like not completely dried wood, big bark, or even pinecones.
Someday I hope to learn how to put off procrastinating until later.
How many miles do you think you have walked using your mill? Wow, I bet it is in the hundreds if not more.
Thanks for this. I always enjoy your dry sense of humor and always learn something interesting. And Happy Thanksgiving to you!
I tell them to not talk about politics, just enjoy the food and avoid Leftwing and Rightwing topics, I don't care what they believe in....lol I would rather be in the woods with my Saw...
Happy Thanksgiving. I remember we called flitches slabs. Using an old school circular mill, I was amazed at how the sawyer was able to make good 1 inch boards out of slabs. I was handling them. Nice to see you make all those boards. Thanks for your video.
I was a little surprised how nice these ones came out too. They looked pretty rough in slab form.
We have 57 acres near Colville, Wa. Very similar terrain, no Oak or Madrone. 60% PP, 40% DF, with a few scattered Larch. Thinning out dead and dying this week. Guy doing it has a small band mill so will be utilizing logs and firewood. Also trying to get more spacing in case fire comes thru. Enjoy your approach to woodlot management. Enjoy your videos, wife LOVES your sense of humor, and she doesn’t even drink!🫣
57 acres in Larch country, sounds like a dream come true. From my experience, where larches grow, it’s beautiful country. Believe it or not, I don’t even drink when I make the videos. 😁
As a long time Sawyer, it's called sawmill porn😏 Then as a bonus you throw in the Flitches! Just so you know I'm watching your Sawmill video on Thanksgiving.......it's a great alternative since I can't be on my own mill 😢 Happy Thanksgiving Mike
I didn’t end up doing either today, didn’t mill anything and didn’t watch any videos. At least my family was pleasant to be around. That’s always helpful.
It’s not even thanksgiving but I’m very thankful we have you.
Enjoyed the content. I hate cutting flitches too. I try and get them towards the end of the day but I’ve been known to procrastinate also. It happens. Happy Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Those I am not in a closet I did get a good laugh today and I am thankful for that. 🤣👍
Laughs are definitely good things to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Thought you might be using the woodmizer on the relatives
We don't have thanksgiving here in the UK. We do most of our relly annoying at Christmas. Fortunately most of my rellies are dead, so my Christmi are much more peaceful these days. Over here 'flitch' refers to half a pig cut lengthways, which is a flitch of bacon. We call your flitches 'waney edge boards'. 'Peavy' is seen written on bass amps - we call that log roller jobby a cant hook. A blank to be sawn (with the barked sections cut off) is a cant. Until it's sawn when it's planks or beams or both or timber. A fall or panel or coupe of coppice is also a cant. Brian Cant was a children's TV presenter on BBC in the 70s, now mostly forgotten.
They used to say: 'Procrastination is the thief of time'. Now, 'television is the thief of time'. Or UA-cam.
I am lucky, all my relatives are over 3000 miles away.
The 3000 mile family free zone. Maybe that should be the new slogan for Alaska.
I appreciate your use of foresters and forestry practices
Variety show?, half expected you to breakout into
Song and Dance. Another very entertaining video Michael- definitely was not a Turkey! Happy Thanksgiving 🇺🇸( stay out of that closet)😂
I need some practice before I do the song and dance. Maybe next year.
We don't have Thanksgiving in Australia, but I still had to watch. I knew I was going to get some words of wisdom from the Great One 🙂
Just came across you channel in the last fews weeks. I really enjoy you way of going about and explaining what you doing Comment sense and nice to watch
Cool video Wilson. In just a few hours I will be going to my sisters house for dried out turkey and burnt stuffing. Yum. I wish I had some flitches to cut. 😁
Flitches don’t sound so bad compared to burned turkey and stuffing. They might taste better too.
See ' now ..... flichtes ain't so bad . 😂
Another good video almost bought same mill that you have got talked out of oh well
Happy Thanksgiving my Friend.. Another Great Video. My dad wanted to know what year was your Tractor. He has a 1975 Belarus . Good ol Girl. Thanks Again for the Video. Til the next one .
I am not sure what year it is but for some reason at some time I got the idea it was a 1973 or 1974. I don’t remember where I got that reason. It was a good era for equipment.
Pine fire wood is better than poplar
Happy Thanksgiving to you! Especially liked the finale! Next up, manicure sawdust mountain for the 2nd annual ski run!
Yep getting about time to groom the slope. Didn’t get around to installing a lift on it this year. Just hope we get some snow.
Thank you, Sir. You got me laughin'.
I’m thankful that I get to watch you cut glitches on Thanksgiving. And I figure you’re enjoying the day and knowing that you don’t have any more to do for a while.
Yep good food, family that wasn’t annoying, and no flitches. Made for a good day.
Off cuts For resawing
Back east, flitches are called "live edge." People pay extra for it!!
No, they are a flitch to anyone who is informed. Live edge is a term for homeowners to be able to grab onto. Flitch sawn is very much a thing, I have bought many batches of flitch sawn material. It’s simply sequentially sawn material within a log.
happy thanksgiving guys
Try stacking your fliches together before sawing them, takes a lot less time.
When they are that small and that irregular in size, I do them individually on the first cut. Then stack them for the second cut. If I do the first cut together, I end up with a lot of wane and a lot of 1x4 instead of more clean 1x6.
Is there a reason y when milling a tree that ya take more than one big cut to square the log off on a side before flipping to a new side ? Ex. Taking 2 or 3, 1” cuts instead of just taking a big 3” cut rite away and flip … I’ve always wondered why…. Happy thanksgiving, thanks for the video 👌🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
With each of those 1 inch cuts I can get a progressively wider flitch that I can get a progressively wider board out of when I edge them. When I do it that way I can utilize more wood that gets cut off that squared log. Not sure if how I explained that made any sense.
@@WilsonForestLands ya I think I’m picking up what your putting down 😆 thanks for the explanation
Happy Thanksgiving it's the best day of my life
So far
Excellent, hopefully they get even better.
lol your a funny guy!
I am the president of the Procrasti-nation. Some times I leave the country for vacation but most of the time I stay home. The first step is to admit you have a problem. My co-worker called it paralysis by over-analysis.
Happy Thanksgiving. You saved the best for last. Often you can get some really good lumber out of those terrible flitches. As far as being around family on Thanksgiving, it's safer for people who act like turkeys to stay to themselves on this day. Yes, I'm talking about myself. Hmm. Oh well, enjoy.
I was going to do some sawing today, but it was 60 degrees yesterday and now 23 this morning. So, I might stay home...👍 happy Thanksgiving
Really wanna hear about the pine firewood myths.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.👍🍻
Hahaha. Love it! Great advice as always.
And “slabs” are the “s” word.
I wish I had some of those flitches to throw on my mill. Yet here I am milling almost exclusively hardwoods.
happy thanksgiving. i'm watching from the log office
Think that saw is big enough to cut those trees
Yes it does quite well.
Our old 2 horse barn was built out of these flitches, not a piece the same with or thicknesses. It worked.
Wow. It is surprisingly relaxing to watch that! 😌
Hope you and your family had a wonderful thanksgiving , Good looking stuff you ended up with. Thanks for sharing
We did have a good one, they weren’t annoying or anything. And they made good food. Hopefully you and Bonnie had a good one as well.
happy thanksgiving and thanks for taking 1 for the team
If you ask me. I'm not scared getting caught watching a sawmill video and someone cutting down trees. If they don't like it. Oh well. That's on them. And if you ask me. Watching videos like yours is exciting
I was laughing at that comment🤣🤣
Happy Thanksgiving, I found a chair out back to enjoy another great video 👌👏
Thank you Craig. Happy Thanksgiving to you.
Happy Thanksgiving, I wouldn't miss a sawmill variety show for anything 😎👍
Thank you, I’m glad to hear you have your priorities straight.
Thats some beautiful wood!
I thought from the thumbnail that this would be an instructional video on how to annoy relatives 🤣😁🤣
I wondered if anyone would read it that way. Maybe that’s a good idea for next year‘s video.
I am that annoying relative. Lol
Well played Wilson 👍
👍
Best Thanksgiving ever!
One word, Yule Log!
Happy Thanksgiving !
Oh yeah happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving! Love the channel!
Thank you, good to know people are enjoying it.
I do not mind working with the flitches/off-cuts/opening cuts... Usually, that's the material I use for bird/owl/bat boxes.
Another likeroo. Well done.
Cheers from a thanksgiving-less neighbor to the North.
That does sound like a good use for the opening cuts especially. I might be more likely to use them for something if I didn’t have such an over abundance of wood.
I use the term "An embarrassment of riches."@@WilsonForestLands
I discovered that if I tarped my firewood completely, critters made it their home 😂
Critters around here make their home in it either way. I can imagine even more of them doing it this way.
Have a good turkey day sir! Thanks for all you do!
Thank you and I appreciate your watching and commenting.
Good job
I have a friend who has a small mill, he has a good quality table saw with a roller set up. he runs the boards with bark through it twice. Does a decent job if you use the guide for the second cut.
I could see that working well. The commercial mills use a secondary saw like that to edge theirs. Some with multiple blades that do both sides at the same time.
Thank you for the thanksgiving day video. I hope your enjoying it with family that you enjoy being with 👍🇮🇪
Yep had a good Thanksgiving, with the non-annoying family.
