Burning Green Wet Slash & Catching Myself on Fire

- Getting wet and green slash brush and wood to burn in a big burn pile. This is a big pile of Manzanita left over from a business I had selling Manzanita branches. It has some old wore out sheets of OSB on top. On top of that is some partly green Douglas fir off cuts from my Woodmizer LT 15 sawmill. Instead of using a drip torch or propane torch and other common things people use to get/piles to burn, I am just using a match and kindling. I think it is good to always be practice in building fires the old fashioned way. That way you are always ready for starting a fire if you need to in an emergency when you may have limited tools. We also get to see how fire resistant OSB is.

So glad I came across your channel. Freaking hilarious but informative at the same time.
Thanks!
Such an awesome video. You have such a fun, informative, serious, yet goofy persona that we need to value more. Awesome video sir. Thank you.
Even though I do this kind of stuff all the time on my tree infested property, and have been doing this same kind of thing since the early 80s, I never get bored with it or tired of it. It still feels as exciting as it did back then. Enough so that I can sit through a whole video of someone else doing it and not even start yawning. I’d like to see more videos on slash and different methods of dealing with post logging debris, such as scattering, piling, pile burning, broadcast burning, chipping, composting, mulching, filling in holes with brush and slash, clogging up creeks and gullies to slow down runoff, creating beaver analogs, creating wildlife habitat, nature sculptures, nursing logs, debris barricades to protect saplings or berry patches from deer, etc. A lot of people think there’s only one way to deal with slash: dozer pile and burn it. I beg to differ.
It’s another 9hours to midnight here in Scotland but happy new year to you all so have a wee dram of whiskey and keep the videos coming.👍👍👍👍
That was another great video, man. I always enjoy a good fire. Happy New Year, and I hope jury duty is interesting.
I use a leaf blower to get the fire alive.
I would like to know what "jump the stump" means.....what causes it......and how to avoid it please. Love your site!
Happy New Year and I truly appreciate a good bonfire at the end of the year!!!
Well, was going to say Happy New year to you, but i now offer my sympathies on jury duty..
However, what would happen if you turn up in what you were wearing to the fire with it still 'aromatic'???
That’s funny, a few days ago I was telling my girlfriend something similar. Except I took it a step beyond that. I was saying I could show up in my hardhat, a wife beater shirt, Daisy Dukes, and my work boots.
It would be interesting to hear about the ecology of your forest and maybe hear what kind of management plan you are using// Like fire control, silviculture etc.. 😁
just watch his videos, the ones that are not just about the saw mill often get into that , you can often judge which one from the thumbnail
YOU are SOOOO funny! I love watching your videos!
Old motor oil and a leaf blower will make anything burn.
All I could think of is que the bears, que the bears! 😂
Happy New Year and have fun on Jury Duty 😁
Yes it should be fun, weeee.
Does helmet have a nickname? Do you ever take it off? lol. Has it ever saved your noggin? Why don’t you have stickers on it? Why is it that color? Sorry just helping with the content for some video down the road lol. Maybe the next video lol
I did a video about it this summer. But I am not sure I answered any of those questions. Thanks a lot, now I may have to do it all over again. 😁
@@WilsonForestLands content brother it’s for the fans!!!! Lol
Well, my goodness. I hope you have a good New Years yourself. Sucks about the jury duty, but it is what it is. Thanks for the caveman TV episode!
Thanks, I think I may be off the hook for jury duty for now.
My work will pay me to go to jury duty so I've always wanted to go and see what it's all about. But of course I never get summoned hahaha.
Looks like it didn’t take that long to burn that stack. OSB don’t burn worth a crap when you want it to. Stand the OSB up and it will burn quicker.
Man we could of had been invited to a Winnie roast. 😂😂 hope you had a great New Year. Jury duty
Have fun…
Loved this! I'm new here but lucky to have found you. Can't wait to see what's next even if its a cool leaf or some bark!
Nah. Old fashioned gets confused with universally logical far too much.
Some things were figured out well, and long ago.
I enjoy starting a fire just as you do, makes it a bit of challenge, engaging, and a sense of a job well done.
And honestly as a perfext example, my older cousin went to start a fire one day. Bunch of logs, no fodder, and gas.
I think it was three times that fire went out, and he gave up. Not because he couldn't start a fire, but he lost his point in saying gas was faster than building the fire up, and didn't want to do what I had said from the beginning. Only costed 4 dollars to not start a fire..
So I did, started a baby fire, and built it up in no time. Gotta give that fire roots!
Not bragging, just sharing a good time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Please keep them coming. 👍🇺🇸
Did you know that a tea made from manzanita leaves is a good ointment for treating a Poison Oak outbreak on skin? When I was a kid, I remember driving to Manzanita, OR to harvest Manzanita leaves for this purpose. I live in a place in the PNW where poison oak is very prolific - if only there were a market for the stuff…😂
This guy is so boring, but it's a good boring if you know what I mean. There's good information mixed in with the boring, it's just the way he delivers it that keeps me intrigued. Sir, keep up the good work. Maybe a video of just bloopers would be awesome, thank you.
In Santa Cruz county we can not burn any type of plywood including OSB. BTW if you send me your address I'll send your a pair of leather gloves.
In the soviet of Washington self employed are exempt from jury duty. FYI
I wish that I lived near you b/c we could probably be good friends. You have a lot of knowledge to share. I might even teach you a little bit 😅. If you ever make it to central NC (Raleigh area) please hit me up. I'll feed you & we can talk shop.
I was thinking that you were near the Wilson River, but the manzanita tells me you are in Southern Oregon. Where’s your operation at? I enjoy your videos. Thx.
The East Coast guys like to use a leaf blower to get the burn pile roaring. Looks like you didn't really need that much extra air to get your burn pile roaring.
I may have been blowing enough hot air myself.
OSB is not only pressed together. The glue makes up the biggest part of the weight of OSB. I suspect there is some flame retarding chemicals in the glue due to OSB being a very common home building material.
Sorry, I enjoy sitting around a fire, whether my small fire pit or large burn like yours. Love letting my thoughts get lost in the flames with the company of an adult beverage and friends.
Boring little factoid ; poison oak sap will eat holes through nomex.
Well done with the fire video. Just needed a good lawn chair, something delicious to drink, and you have a great fireside chat video. Staring into the fire and telling stories is something missing from most of modern society.
Great video, but I was expecting your hair to be on fire like those folks in front of the Supreme Court.
Fun fact: all mushrooms are edible...but some are edible only *once*
When I think my property is steep I watch one of your videos and realize mines not so much !!
Looks like a good time 🇺🇸
I would bring a portable grill and fry up some steaks...
Maybe the OSB is salted to prevent it from catching fire.
that looked like a huge crazy potential out of control bonfire, but it didn't burn very fast or big.
Luv yur dry humor 😂where are you? Looks like Norcal Southern Oregon. 🤠
Wouldn't it been great if you had a Bow & Arrow with a flaming Tip !
Yeah it would. I need to think of these things before I do the videos.
It is cool that you used fat lighter from a (sugar) pine stump to start the fire. That stuff works great to start fires.
Merry Christmas Wilson..happy new year 🎉
I have long hair so It sucks when you are burning a brush pile and smell burnt hair.
I've had a similar experience with osb
I did the bee dance just the other day. Found out not as fast as I used to bee. Ouch 😂
Good thing you’re wearing your hard hat to tend that fire, lol!
I was sent a letter/questionnaire about jury duty a couple years back. I stated that I was racist and never heard anything more about it. 😎👍🍻
😅 I'm using that one brother. "We don't like them kinds around here." I'm like Dave Chapelle's Clayton Bigsby
@@Neilson-ve9si🤣
Hey Wilson, Does a tree make any noise when it falls if your not there ?
Light fire with propane torch kept going out got mad did it the ild way got it going then had a hard time to get it out did the same thing burn the termites
You could do a video of jury duty just don't discuss the case. You can do about your day
Nice job with the fire Michael , Happy New Year 😊
Never seen or heard of sugar pine. Im on the Right side.
So far, like your humor.
Just like going to Burning Man only better!
In IL we got rid of Emerald ash borer with a couple of days of -30 deg F about 6 years ago. The eggs got killed in the bark.
Emerald ash borer recently made it to the West Coast. Fortunately and unfortunately we don’t get nearly that cold here. Maybe that’s what we need, a freak extreme cold snap.
Don't quote me, but I think osb is supposed to be "flame resistant". Similar to CLS timber. I used to be a timber framer and that was the excuse we used when you get a site manager that thinks it's unsafe to smoke inside wooden building with no roof, in a country where it rains most of the time.
I have wondered if they put some kind of flame retardant in OSB.
How he knows other trees don't have it?
I had wondered if you had sugar pines. I guess you do. I have read that record Douglas fir was taller than record redwood tree. I haven't heard you mention that.
Yep I have sugar pines here. I did a video about them, maybe a year ago. Yes it is believed the tallest tree was at one time a Douglas fir, likely somewhere in BC. Likely cut down by someone who didn’t even know it was the world’s tallest tree.
I did my burn just before Christmas after first snow. I had a bunch of 90 foot Aspens that had been on the ground for a few years, I cut them intp 10 foor lengths, stacked them together with half a dozen carboard boxes full of brush clippings, poured 5 galls of kerosen on her and lit her up. It burned real hot and gave off very little smoke. After two and a hald daus it had all gone. Happy New Year Friend from BC Canada.
Strange, all the dances you talk about we have done too! Including but not limited to the I hit my thumb with a hammer dance, the hot welder or cutting torch dance, and the best one the "F" dance because another tree got hung up. I can't end this without sharing comments we get every time we have a fire.... THIS IS HOW FOREST FIRE'S START😡😡 ....😂🤣😂 Have a good new year!
I think I have done all of those dances myself. I am surprised I haven’t got the this is how forest fires start comment.
Thanks for the last year of content. Happy New Year to you and your family, Mr. Wilson, see you in 2024 🎉🥳🎊
Coffee is hot too; just ask McDonald’s.
OSB is probably 50% binders - perhaps that’s why it’s hard to ignite? It sure rots easily though
I nearly got on a Grand Jury panel. Had to go over the hill to Pasadena (California). They were empaneling three juries, so they needed 99 jurors. I was looking forward to serving (I’m retired), and they had called for 125 prospective jurors to report, so my chances were pretty good. After all the excuses the usual reasons (caregivers, medical appointments, planned vacations - “I already booked my tickets”, etc) the pool was whittled down to 105.
But at the end of the day six of us went home without being picked.
Merry Christmas, all Christmas long! (Dec.25th - Jan.6th) And Happy New Year!
Nothing boring about your videos Wilson. I’m always entertained. Happy new year 🎈🎊🎆 😁
Happy new year 👌🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
the best boring video.
Happy new year to you also !!
This is a good video … really good. Don’t apologize. Why does smoke follow you as you walk around a fire, like a smoke magnet?! Absolutely beautiful land. Wow. Bugs, be gone!
Dude, I love everything you have to say! Keep on kicking ass. You've inspired me to try square filing again...
Hmmmm, 7:30 pm here in Michigan, had a couple of beers and now a good laugh. I'm on the farm near Battle Creek, Mi., Widowed 10 years now and really needed a good laugh tonight. I've only watched a couple of your videos and trying to figure out what you are all about over there. So far I agree with everything you say and do and it confuses me. From what I see everyone is legalizing every crazy idea or drug over there which makes me wonder if I'm being lied to or am I moving left, Lol. Anyway, as much as I take risk I wonder about that big of fire near stuff you say loves to catch fire. Don't need any more forest fires. Probably there's more distance than camera shows and I'm certain you know what you are doing. Glad to hear mention about Osage orange trees. Was popular here in Mich. back in the 50-60's but rare now thank goodness. They were pushed as good natural fences but sure flattened a bunch of tractor tires. Thanks for the good laughs and good humor, it was really needed tonight. Happy New Years and Thank You. May 2024 be better for us all.
Came across your channel, nothing to do with my lifestyle but love watching your videos, your pretty funny narrating 😁
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Great content. Hopefully Grand Jury Duty isn’t too dry.
Being UA-cam I feel I have to make a negative comment so here goes, you missed a golden teaching moment when you didn’t make your kindling pile below your manzanita. Fires burn up great but not well down so light the bottom of your pile. I know you know this and we’re just being lazy because you knew it would go regardless but you’d be surprised how many people try to light the top of a wood pile. 😉👍🏼
You bring up a good point but I light a lot of my fires top down. I may do a video one day about why I do that.
Probably so they don’t just take off and get out of hand but most won’t know that either. 😉👍🏼
I can watch fire burn for hours. Had a nice fire today (Dec 31) while cleaning up.
Happy New Year.
I hope the case is interesting.
Ok I see that I'm not the only fire bug. You're just as bad as I am about burning. Happy new year
Hahaha! 😂
You are so funny ,like your videos and I learn stuff maybe Happy New Year from us in Massachusetts
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
Old fashioned way can be strangley satisfying,. Every few years the timber company that manages the hill I can see from my living room has been burning the huge old slash piles clearing it for replant. It was all Doug fir and red alder when they clear cut.
Happy new year
Happy New Year my Friend. Love your channel and love your content.
I truly love a good burn pile. Thank you and Happy New Year!!!😁
I never wear protective clothes while burning and didn't have an issue until recently when burning wet tumble weeds with peach leaves. A couple embers were slow burning enough to give me a nice blister on the arm and on one of my eye lids before I could immediately brush them away... So be careful about wet burning embers...
I wouldn’t worry about content. It’s been enjoyable. May 2024 be good to you and yours.
What is it about burning brush and slash that is so satisfying. I burn stuff all the time. It appeals to something primal in us. And then here I am, made it all the way through a video of someone else doing it.
It’s not boring, although I did watch it at 2x speed!
Thanks for being you. One of my favourite channels
Have a great 2024!
I enjoy your interesting videos.
Now that the beacons of Gondor are alight! Has no man yet answered their call!
Happy New Year to you too and thanks for the videos.
Careful with that fire or the channel will be Wilson Deforest Lands! Happy New Year! 🎉
😂 at your comment and even more 😂 at your name.
Cool Happy New Year, and God Bless
Do you need a special permit to burn such a large fire? I'm surprised they let you do that in the west coast. I'm on the east coast and my normal town fire permit only allows me a 2 foot diameter fire. And no burning OSB. How are you allowed to do that?
Permits? Hmm, I hadn’t even thought of that. 😁 I have a permit called a Notification of Operation with the Department of Forestry for forest operations. Logging slash piles are commonly burned and they are often much bigger than this. As far as the OSB, I don’t know. I am far away from any residential areas so I don’t think anybody cares.
Happy New Year and God Bless
Jury duty in Josephine County should be a riot! Or, maybe you’re in Jackson, which isn’t much better. Either way I’m sure you’ll have fun and come out of that experience with at least a few good stories to tell.
Consider doing a video on “old man’s beard” and how flammable and prevalent it is in our woods. I’m sure you’ve seen how it grows thick on the dead branches of reprod trees that are planted so close together all of their lower branches die out, which is a fire hazard on its own. Dang Old Man’s Beard is almost like gasoline hanging from the branches.
I can relate to this video as I bought some so called fire resistant shirts and pants to wear for the burn pile part of my public land gorilla fuel reduction projects and they got full of holes regardless. Also, I’ve lost most of my eye brows and some of my hair a few times over the years getting too close to the burn pile.
Good stuff you’re putting out there! Happy New Year Mr. Wilson!
This is Jackson, I can only imagine it being about half a notch better than Josephine. You are probably right, a riot. I got selected as just an alternate juror so I might be off the hook.
I don’t have enough old man’s beard here to be a significant fire hazard. I know it is in some areas just as you describe. It’s an idea to consider.
Happy new year to you. We need more gorillas out there.
@@WilsonForestLands I have jury duty coming up in Jackson too! Blaaa! I just posted a short of a little logging operation near Galls Creek you might find interesting. Private land operation running a high-line you can watch/video from across the canyon. Something you don’t see everyday. Good view of it up Kane Creek Rd. (Off Old Stage Rd). Might make some good content for you, at least for a short. They put their yarder right at the end of a BLM rd where I was doing some fuel reduction last winter. BTW, I wrote a letter to the BLM about my fuel reduction efforts and they called me. That turned out to be an interesting conversation.
You made a great slash pile fire. The hillbillies in the canyon below me do this every winter and all they make is smoke.
We are super hillbillies out here. We know how to build good fires.
Thanks
I just noticed your super chat. That is very kind of you. Thank you I appreciate that. 👍
😂😂😂
Happy New Year! 🎊
