Wow! 9 years ago, we're all a little bit longer in the tooth and some of us wider in the waist! I'm finally in the market for a big GS, after watching your videos religiously for a good 6-7 years (yes, you've sold me onto the GS!), you've been a cornerstone and a torchbearer for motorcycle review channels and one I always turn to when considering a purchase of a bike as your reviews generally come from a very solid place and are consistent across the board. Just wanted to say thanks for all the output you have given us over the years, maybe one day I'll bring my (hopefully newly acquired GS) along to a bike meet. Keep up the outstanding videos Andy!
hory sheet:D i used to watch your vids years ago when i still played COD and now I come across your comment here while shopping for cases, cant be coinkidonk! ;D
I myself would go for the 2 side cases combined with a large roll bag across the passenger seat. I think the top box looks a bit ungainly as it's a bit too tall. Well done, great presentation.
Got mine months ago and forgot how to mount them. Thanks for making this video. Very helpful. I didn't even know they were expandable. BRAVO!! Cheers Sir
Ha ha . I’m exactly the same! Had my gs for a year only just realised expendable and had to check with missenden flyer how to put back on.🤣🤣😂. I feel much better now.👍👍
A good review. I've the same kit on my bike, minus the top box. I have just bought hatched black reflectors for the back of the panniers via eBay. You can't see them in day light but at night and in direct light they are brilliant for extra safety. You can get them in red also. I checked out the battery tender for the GS. No hassles using one direct to the battery. Just don't turn on the ignition whilst it's connected, which is obvious. I'm using a Harley charger and it's working well. Checked it with BMW. One last thing, I had my bike in for recall due to sticking switch gear. Keep an eye on yours - indicators and kill switch replaced. Kill switch broke all together and bike had to be collected by a recovery truck and taken to BMW. Sorry for the very lengthy response. Cheers, Craig
Hi Craig, Thanks or your kind words - I have just ordered some "engineering grade" (whatever that means) reflective tapes in silver and red to adorn my panniers with, so will be applying that as soon as, strikes me as a great idea. ...and I've heard about the switch gear going before, have to say it's my least favourite bit of the bike, the tactile sensation on the BMW "PCB" style switchgear is rubbish and feels cheap - shame given in most other respects the bike is fantastic... Mate, you’re just hitting all the nails on the head! Another very informative and well done video. 👍 Cheers. Regarding the inner bags available… I got really excited when you pulled out the one, hoping you’d show them all. On the BMW website, the one for the top case in particular looks a bit small. Does it a) fully fill out the top case, and b) is it also expandable like the one you showed? Ta.
Thank you for posting. Would love to find a metal pannier set that mounts in the factory Vario mounts. Seems like these plastic cases are the only ones to use the clean mounts, without all the brackets.
Hmm, the Varios on my '09 1200GS have a center locking lug rear the rear seat. Interesting to see the updated version (aside from opposite side exhaust!) I like them more than I thought I would.... but it is annoying when your objects either fall out the side when opened, or you may catch some stuff in the groove for the lid which wont allow it to close....
Nice Video.. 2014/15/16 GS Adventure Alloy panniers are falling way short of quality control standards at the moment.. I have been waiting a month for mine and the side panniers have arrived today in pretty poor condition, beware!
Great instructional video. I have the same setup and I love these panniers as they are simple to use and really functional for touring, camping, etc. I should add that with the top box, you need a new adaptor plate for the back rack which BMW sell. It is easy to install though I can't remember whether it was sold separately to the box or not. Cheers from Australia. G
Thanks for the thorough review MissendenFlyer! I currently just purchased a super clean (new to me) 2016 g650gs and was all set to buy aftermarket aluminum panniers as I want to do a little touring this summer. After watching this video I'm having second thoughts as the N. American dealers have a limited selection of the Vario cases left for my bike for half the price of aluminum. I know this video is a bit dated so I was wondering if you have gotten on well with your side cases??? Have they held up and would you choose them again? Thanks so much for any help. Cheers from NW Washington!
They are still going strong but I tend to use a roll-bag rather than the side cases these days....I found them a little heavy even when empty....topbox is used every week though....
Your review on the panniers was very good, are they easy to keep clean, I noticed how immaculate your bike was in the video, very impressed, take care, regards Colin.
Cheers Colin - yes I've had my bucket and sponges out again :0) ...and yes, the panniers are uber easy to wash down with the rest of the bike. Cheers - TMF
I wonder if the aftermarket has something similar or if you can buy these from something other than the BMW dealer. The BMW build your own bike site in the US has the Vario side cases at $1439. The Vario top case at $733. The inner bags for the Vario cases at $310 and the inner bag for the top case at $155. This adds up to $2637. You have to be totally in love with these bags to spend that kind of money on them! Then they will get you for installing the keyed locks - are they worth $3K?
It costs some money, but then you have good bags. Just the vision of BMW, good quality, versatile and long lasting. By the way.....good review!! Ride safe!
Good well produced review but having used these cases for two holidays on my GS some years back I sold them and fitted ali boxes. The cases are clever and look good but the capacity is small compared with the outer dimensions due to the space taken by the mechanism. They also heavy even when empty, again as an expanding mechanism needed to be carried plus relatively heavy plastic. The side opening is awkward to fill without either removing the cases from the bike or using liner bags which further reduces capacity. A final annoyance that we found when having to leave the bike overnight in a bike parking bay was finding bikes parked close on both sides and having to push the bike into traffic to load the bags as there was no room to open them. The ali boxes I fitted did look a little tatty quite quickly but were lighter, narrower, better capacity, easier to fill and one big plus I found was that the lids could be left so items too big to go completely inside could be carried easily.
All good points Andy - I actually still prefer the vario cases over the big Charley and Euan jobbies bit I do agree on your observations on the downsides...
I've got them too MF and I also like the way they fix to the GS without the usual scaffolding. I've also got some inner bags off ebay which were alot cheaper than the BM ones though not as sturdy. The right hand one does have an extra pouch on it that fits in the space above the exhaust which the BM one doesn't have though. I've tried all the combinations and for a short stay I just use the panniers with a sports bag where the top box would go to save weight and make it easier for SWMBO to get on and off. The one disadvantage compared to the aluminium ones is the varios are side loading so you can normally cram more in the ali ones as they are top loaders but all things considered the vario stuff is a good combination for road touring. If you leave the bags out you can get more stuff in too, but then you need to take them off the bike to unpack and repack them which I've also done!
2:12 Ah haa!! A camera mount on the top of the side case is a great idea! I never thought of that... just been putting stickers and state flags on the case so far :)
Thanks for all your reviews. Extremely helpful. Just picked up a low mileage loaded 2016 TE. Excellent piece of engineering.. My stock rear rack looks slightly different. Do I need to buy a new rack or parts to fit the Vario case to the bike?
The vario cases fit straight onto the stock "lugs" and rack on the bike, sounds like yours may have a non standard rear rack though??? Good choice of bike, enjoy!
I got a great idea for a video. How you pack the panniers for a week long trip :) I am going soon and I cannot find a single thread on the BMW Vario cases
Hi. I have these boxes. Side panniers work fine by the top box does not attach. Yours looks slightly different to me, have you got some sort of mounting plate attached? Thanks
Great vid review as always, I too have the same set up and they proved to be first class on my euro trip this year. Have a look into the small GS tank bag, just right as it doesn't obscure anything and totally waterproof. Ride safe mate, kind regards Ian
Absolutely not a pain at all, there's a clever stainless bracket that fixes to the nut at the front of the tank and a bracket below the seat which attaches to the seat adjuster. All easily removed with squeeze clips and flipped up for refuelling (if that makes sense). The bottom of the bag is cloaked with a kinda rubber material which completely illimanates any fine tank scratches. I'm OCD too lol
Love your videos.... Very informative and well made. I am from Malta and contemplating my first GS. I want to get a low mileage one from the UK....They cost way too much here....
+Jam Tub Thanks Jam Tub...why are they so expensive in Malta do you think? Is there some strange tax slapped on them?? Glad you like my efforts, thanks for watching and for stopping by - TMF
well just got a quote from BMW here for a new GS with the 3 packs (here it's 3 packs, I think in the UK it's the TE) I was quoted just under 20,000 pounds (23,500 Euros).......No way am I paying that much....I thought maybe a good 2nd hand low mileage GS from the UK (Allan Jeffries seem like good dealers) or maybe from Autotrader since it's direct from the owners....
To be honest that's not a lot more expensive than here - as I mentioned in a previous video mine (bought nearly 3 years ago) was circa £18K and I agree that that is a hell of a lot for a motorbike.....definitely second hand is the way to go if you're not too bothered about being the first to get your mitts on a bike......
Great video! I have two questions, 1st- can you lock the cases to the bike, so it can be left over nite if your at a motel? 2nd- will a full face helmet fit in the right side case?
riffkin32 Hi Riffkin - Thanks for your kind words, really glad you liked my video. Your questions: 1) Yes and 2) Err, No I think - you can fit a full face in one pannier and the top box, but not the small pannier :0)
Great videos. Im in the market for a new GS and having watched your video comparing the GS/GSA, found it most helpful. Do you reckon the 2017 GS gearbox and motor runs as smoothly as the GSA (per your earlier video), asking because the dates can be a bit confusing. Also, as a taller rider, do you think the wind screen is adequate for a 6'2+ rider? I prefer the look of the GS and the non spoke wheel, any issues for you regarding the two types of rims?
Hi Troy - yes the new 2017 bikes are both as good as each other on the engine front GSA or GS - both lovely. You probably would need to replace the screen with an aftermarket one (I did at 5'8"). With regard to spokes v cast wheels, I like the look of spokes but a pain to clean and if you're not off-roading...why go there. Thanks for the kind words - TMF
Fantastic video - very informative! I just bought a 2016 GSA and need some advice on panniers. The Vario boxes look extremely practical - I'm after a slimmer profile where possible. My question is how do you think these would fare compared to the aluminium panniers if the bike fell over? Would the aluminium ones offer more protection for the bike and the rider's leg being crushed? My bike has the brackets already installed for the aluminium boxes and they seem to offer more mounting support than the Vario ones. Thanks! Al.
Hi Al, thanks for your kind words. These vario boxes are pretty tough, I imagine they would be just as good as the aluminium ones for protecting the bike/rider in a drop. Does the GSA have the mounting lugs for the vario panniers??
+TheMissendenFlyer Thanks for the quick response. Umm, I'm not sure if the bike does have the lugs. I took some pictures but not sure how to post on UA-cam.
+Sheikh Ali I think for the GSA the vario panniers aren't an option....one of the reasons I went for the "standard" bike (albeit the current GSA only came out in MY 2014)...
+TheMissendenFlyer I'm going to check with the dealer if the Vario boxes can be fitted. Based on your review, they seem ideal for my requirements. Cheers.
Thanks FOA! - You are about the 5th person to ask for that so I think I may just have to do that video one of these days (just feel a bit of a wally showing people my garage!!!!). Cheers for now, and thanks or watching! - TMF
Do it, doesn't need to show everything thats personal, but the cabinets, flooring etc... looks great. I have a big space as well but very unorganized etc... lol
+Brux773 Thanks Brux773 - I don't notice any wind noise or adverse effects although when fully loaded the bike does handle a little light at the front (as you would expect) at illegal speeds.....so I'm told (officer!) :0) Thanks for stopping by!
Silly question possibly, but do the panniers lock *to* the bike with the single key, or do they just lock shut? It would be a shame if the boxes were securely shut but easy for someone to walk off with and cut open later! Anyway, thanks for these videos on the GS, I'm shopping and these are very helpful!
Hey TMF. Great videos :-) What's that flooring in your garage? I'm looking for something similar to spruce mine up but there are so many options. The cabinets look good too. Ever done (or considered doing) a workshop walkaround?
+blackprophesy Thanks for the kind words, I've had many requests for a tour of my garage but something about it just feels wrong, it's just a garage!! :0) My flooring was from Costco, cost me about £200 for the double garage, very pleased with it....the cabinets were from the web somewhere (don't recall where I'm afraid) but they are purpose built garage units, think they were around £800 for the set IIRC......I seem to remember I fitted out my whole garage (including the shelving from "Big Dug") for around £1500.....
Good review and as usual to the point video. I've recently passed my test and looking to get a GS (lc) can't decide if I should go for a standard one or Adventure. I have a 34-35" inner leg so adventure would be better suited I think and I love spiked wheels on them. What would your advice be? By the way, Some of your videos are on the roads I use quite often.
+Evgenij Lichogrud Well for me I have no need for the extra tank range of the GSA and I didn't fancy lugging the extra bulk around on the driveway (plus I'm not a fan of cleaning spokes) so I would go standard over the GSA - but it's just a personal thing, sounds like you prefer the GSA - both brilliant machines, you won't be disappointed either way! Thanks for the kind words and for stopping by, give me a wave if you see me out and about, all the best - TMF
+TheMissendenFlyer, I am hoping to get one next autumn, I'm not sure I would need all the extra off-road capability GSA has to offer as it'll be 1/20 chance I would actually be doing. Will likely see you riding about as I'll be working down the road from Missenden, starting in two weeks time. Thank you for the reply. EV
Hi TMF, I will hopefully be doing some touring in 2015, the west country etc, especially if I get the new R1200GS as I hope too ! are there any definitive books you could recommend such as "Bikers Britain" the AA publication that I can purchase to give me some ideas of routes to take, places too stay. your input would be much appreciated, safe riding, regards Colin.
Hi Colin, the only book I have on the subject is in fact that "Bikers Britain" book and I've ridden a number of the routes in there (some of which you may have seen on my videos), quite a handy read. Other than that I'm afraid I don't have any recommendations for you.....my approach is get a map, watch the weather forecast and head for the sunny green bits! All the best - TMF
Can anyone help. The video shows the the case being fitted directly to the rear rack which I believe was a standard part (or at least came on my bike 2017 Rallye), some retailers of Vario top cases are telling me I need an adapter plate to enable the top case to fit, how is it there does not seem to be such an adapter plate in the video?
Good question! I don't recall there being an adaptor plate on my bike unless it came fitted with it from the dealer when I bought it and it looks "factory"....
Hey JB. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2014 GS and have been of 2 minds, either to go with the vario panniers or a pair of soft panniers at a much lower price. How durable do you feel that the Varios are? If you were to drop the bike do you think they would suffer significant damage or could they come out with just a few scratches?
Hi Patrick - the vario panniers are made from pretty thick grade plastic and I think would survive a drop mainly with a few scratches...they are a rugged build for plastic cases (compared for example with my old Givi luggage). Enjoy your new bike, they are great bits of kit!
TheMissendenFlyer Great JB. $1000USD for the panniers is a hefty price when you start adding on the accessories, but if they're good cases I may add them in.
Patrick Roney...not sure who JB is by the way - and yes the cases are expensive, but here in the UK you are talking £1000 the set not $1000 so you get them cheap! ;0)
Have you done any research on riding gear especially for harsh conditions; rain, large temperature drops and the such? I have had reasonable comfort with Olympia Motorsports gear. Thanks
Hi m.f have just bought a 1200 gs rallye and am getting conflicting answers about whether the vario panniers/topbox from a f750gs fit a r1200 gs !! Any help /knowledge would be HUGELY appriciated cheers 😁😁
I'm touring for a couple of weeks with a rental 2017 R1200GS that comes with a full set of BMW Vario Panniers and top box. *Can anyone please tell me the internal dimensions of the inside removable cases for them?* I'm bringing a 17" laptop if I can, but I don't know if it will fit inside either the side cases or the top box, and I would like to know before lugging the thing all the way down to the south island of New Zealand with me... Cheers!
HI. I am looking to buy some cases. Would you still recommend this panniers? If you have to go shopping again, would you buy them or you would try something new? Thanks!
Hi TMF, do you know if the vario top case will accommodate a full face ADV style helmet? Something like a Nexx wild street or an AGV AX8 or equivalent. Thanks a lot in advance!
Hi, When you go on long trips like the NC500, at night do you cart your panniers and top box in to the hotel room or do you leave them in place and use inner bags? I have been carrying mine in but in a single room a pair of panniers and a top box use up a lot of floor space especially if you get a cramped single room.
I got them today, unfortunately the seller "wasnt" aware of a few small damages here n there... got them even cheaper 450eur. I didnt get key to them, the guy said the locks are there but in need to "code" them to fit my ignition key... is it possible?
Hi!! This video was a while ago, and I am looking to buy some panniers. Would you recommend this one? Or the SW-Motech aluminum cases? Thank you for your help! Love your channel. Ps: I just bought 1250GS 2020 Bike
@@TheMissendenFlyer so you would buy them again for your next GS bike? Or you would change for a Aluminum case? They told me that plastic is not that good vs aluminum? Hope you can help me decide..
How is the durability of the Vario cases? Would they stand up to heavy, nearly daily, usage? If not, is there something you could recommend instead? Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
+Roger Morello I don't no - the GSA comes with the scaffolding for the aluminium paniers (one of the reasons I didn't go for the GSA!) - I'm not sure if the scaffold can be removed and these fitted instead....possible I guess! One to ask the dealer.....
I have these and love them. Any idea what the design function is for the two black "notches" on the top edge of each side case? They are too shallow to connect any strap to as far as I can tell (and unfortunately).
I think the mounting plate for top box is about 150 to 170 euros extra over here. I bought my TE (2013) in Leeds before Christmas but it had the top box and obviously mounting plate already. Back rest about another 120 ishhhhhhhhhh.
I have the same bike... same panniers etc... trying to get luggage on top of the panniers via a homemade strap bracket. . like on the zega panniers.... is there any thing you recommend?
+Dave Ford Hi Dave - I've not tried anything like that so I'm afraid can't really help - would be interested to hear what you come up with though! Cheers for stopping by - all the best - TMF
i have booked R1200gs. which panniers do you suggest. theses vario panniers or those aluminium panniers. ! i like these vario. but worried about the durability in minor crashes.
What did they cost you to buy from the dealer as everyone is giving me different price. Also how heavy are they say if I bought them used I'd like to know how much they would cost me to ship.
+Evgenij Lichogrud They were in the region of a thousand pounds for the panniers and top box and they are very heavy even when empty - I don't know the actual weight but I'm sure the BMW Motorrad website would have that info....good luck in your search!
Hey mate! I have been looking for a way to mount additional drybags to the bike. Since there are no mounting points on the Vario bags I tried Kreiga but does not work so good. I was thinking of mounting a Dryspec d38 but might be too big. Have you come up with a way to add additional luggage ?
TheMissendenFlyer I just ordered a Dryspec D28 Dual End Dry bag. I think this will work in front of the top case. I will send you a pic of it mounted once it arrives.
TheMissendenFlyer Thanks. I am trying to decide between 2 33L or 2 46L cases, or one of each. I already have an aluminum top case (58L). My cases are / would be Givi.
Hi, I've had my gs almost a year now have the vario panniers also, have you noticed the bottom inside where it slides out starting to bend up? Mine has started to deform slightly when in its in position!
+TheMissendenFlyer , ye I do use them everyday but I know they haven't been bent by force as there is no stress marks its almost like changes in temperature has warped them. They still close and are watertight I am just wondering wether they will get worse and wether or not it's a warranty issue... I may have to ring up my dealer.
Well spotted, it is the low seat, and yes it's perfectly comfortable - I can't tell the difference comfort wise between this and the standard height pad.
Hi there MF. Thanks for your vids over the last year ! Look forward to more. I just ordered the Clearwater " Erica " auxiliary lights for my GS...it's said they turn night into day. Should be a good safety component for the ride. Best to you in 2015 !
Hi again CL - Funny you should mention that, I'm having some of the BMW LED driving/aux lights fitted to my GS on Monday - again mainly for safety (ie being seen) reasons through the winter. Will let you know how I get on with them...cheers for watching and all the best to you too.....TMF
In my opinion, the sidecases are the worst on the market because of the design. When your cases are fully loaded and you open them, things fall out because the lids open on the side. Top opening is always better. Also, inside the sidecases, you have weird angles, it's not a perfect square if you know what I mean. It makes harder to stack things.
@@TheMissendenFlyer No. Since I organize by using drybags and packing cubes, I find it silly to put in another bigger bag. The point is, I wish I knew or been told in the beginning to consider other options instead of buying from the dealer theses Vario cases.
Hi David, no I don't - I regard quick-shifters as something you'd have on a track day sports bike rather than a road bike (just my preference, I know lots of road riders have them). Do you have one fitted? I've never ridden with one on any bike.....cheers for watching - TMF
Wow! 9 years ago, we're all a little bit longer in the tooth and some of us wider in the waist! Wow thank you very much - what a lovely comment!
I was shopping for cases and I can't imagine a more informative video. Thank you.
Hey that's very kind of you to say so, thanks very much!
hory sheet:D i used to watch your vids years ago when i still played COD and now I come across your comment here while shopping for cases, cant be coinkidonk! ;D
Brilliant. I was leaning toward the aluminum boxes but this may change my mind because I don't need the frames.

BRAVO!!

+2002honda954 Glad to be of help, the expandable feature is brilliant isn't it...
Ha ha . I’m exactly the same! Had my gs for a year only just realised expendable and had to check with missenden flyer how to put back on.🤣🤣😂. I feel much better now.👍👍
Just seeing this video now on your channel....you've come a long way with your audio!!! Great job!!!
Thanks Fred - it all gets better with practice!
A good review. I've the same kit on my bike, minus the top box. I have just bought hatched black reflectors for the back of the panniers via eBay. You can't see them in day light but at night and in direct light they are brilliant for extra safety. You can get them in red also.

Sorry for the very lengthy response.

Hi Craig,
Thanks or your kind words - I have just ordered some "engineering grade" (whatever that means) reflective tapes in silver and red to adorn my panniers with, so will be applying that as soon as, strikes me as a great idea.
...and I've heard about the switch gear going before, have to say it's my least favourite bit of the bike, the tactile sensation on the BMW "PCB" style switchgear is rubbish and feels cheap - shame given in most other respects the bike is fantastic...

Mate, you’re just hitting all the nails on the head! Another very informative and well done video. 👍 Cheers.

Very well explained. You convinced me to buy the original cases. You're right, they look nice and when you remove it, it just looks clean.
Cheers Christian - glad we concur!
Thank you for posting. Would love to find a metal pannier set that mounts in the factory Vario mounts. Seems like these plastic cases are the only ones to use the clean mounts, without all the brackets.

Tony Wheeler Thanks Tony - have a great trip!
Great just about to make the decision for my new to me GS...you answered all the Q's I had...nice one 🤘🏍
Glad I could help

Thanks JB - agreed, the BMW stuff in the main is good kit (but you do pay for it)! Thanks for watching - TMF
TheMissendenFlyer Pay for something with high quality, is a good investment, in my opinion.
Very Nice, just got my R1200GS with the BMW Vario Cases and this was really informative.
Glad to be of service!
Very useful informations and very nice shoes 😉
Thanks Mate! Always curious about the "vario" aspect of the panniers!
I aim to please!
Great review mate. I have just subbed to you and loving all your vids. Got to say you have two awesome bikes and garage :) ride safe JJ
Hey Jack welcome along and thanks for the sub! Glad you are enjoying my vids - more to come soon - ride safe! TMF
Thanks Adrian - I agree all round!
Thanks! Mate. Very informative as always. Great content
My pleasure! Apologies I missed your comment earlier!!

Ah haa!! A camera mount on the top of the side case is a great idea! I never thought of that... just been putting stickers and state flags on the case so far :)
+RCFlyBoy314 ;0) I actually put GoPro mounts on all three cases, but to be fair the angle from them isn't that great so rarely use them....
Video très sympa et belle démonstration du produit modulable et pratique. Merci pour la démonstration.
Pas Probleme
Thanks for all your reviews. Extremely helpful. Just picked up a low mileage loaded 2016 TE. Excellent piece of engineering.. My stock rear rack looks slightly different. Do I need to buy a new rack or parts to fit the Vario case to the bike?
The vario cases fit straight onto the stock "lugs" and rack on the bike, sounds like yours may have a non standard rear rack though??? Good choice of bike, enjoy!
Looks like I have to buy a piece that bolts under the OE rack. This has the top case receiver lugs in it. More £ for BMW. "Tell me about it" ;-)
I got a great idea for a video. How you pack the panniers for a week long trip :) I am going soon and I cannot find a single thread on the BMW Vario cases
Hi. I have these boxes. Side panniers work fine by the top box does not attach. Yours looks slightly different to me, have you got some sort of mounting plate attached? Thanks
No it's stock....
Great review! I think I'm gonna start cleaning up my garage.
That's the spirit! My OCD stretches to having a tidy garage as well :0) Thanks for watching......TMF
Another slick video and most informative...Thank you.
Peter Taylor Thanks Peter - glad you found it so :0) All the best - TMF
Fully extended are they wider than the bars, which is how we all judge gaps
Do the cases lock onto the bike if you were to leave the bike outside overnight? or can anybody come and take the cases off?
Yes firmly locked in..
Another great review, I to am feeling guilty about the state of my garage. I must clean it up.
Crikey it seems my OCD garage has sparked off a lot of guilt out there!! Oops! Thanks for watching and for your kind words....TMF
Very informative video. Straight to the point. Thanks.
Glad you found it of interest - all the best - TMF
Great vid review as always, I too have the same set up and they proved to be first class on my euro trip this year. Have a look into the small GS tank bag, just right as it doesn't obscure anything and totally waterproof.
Ride safe mate, kind regards Ian
Cheers Ian - I was wondering about that tank bag, how does it connect to the bike? Secure? A pain when you want to refuel???
Absolutely not a pain at all, there's a clever stainless bracket that fixes to the nut at the front of the tank and a bracket below the seat which attaches to the seat adjuster. All easily removed with squeeze clips and flipped up for refuelling (if that makes sense). The bottom of the bag is cloaked with a kinda rubber material which completely illimanates any fine tank scratches. I'm OCD too lol
Beans Cheers for that - I'll check it out....
Love the channel! Really great work.
Thank you!
I would love to be the first (even for warranty's sake) however saving 5 to 6k euros is quite enticing. That's the only hurdle I need to get over....
+TheMissendenFlyer
Thanks for the quick response.
+TheMissendenFlyer
I'm going to check with the dealer if the Vario boxes can be fitted. Based on your review, they seem ideal for my requirements. Cheers.
Great review, now your going to have to do a video of the awesome clean garage!
I have a big space as well but very unorganized etc... lol
TheMissendenFlyer So you should, you are filling us all with envy, Regards Colin.
:0)
Hi, awesome video, congrats. Do you sense any turbulence or wind noise ? Best regards
+MotörMerc No such thing as a silly question! ...and yes, the single key locks the panniers to the bike too.... All the best - TMF
Hey TMF. Great videos :-)
What's that flooring in your garage?
EV
+Evgenij Lichogrud Let me know what colour you get and I'll keep an eye out for you (there's not many of us GSers around here).....
In 2021 do you still use these panniers? Are there any downsides to the other than they are plastic. Water proof? Durable? Etc.
Yes I do - fairly waterproof - defo durable, mine still going strong....
Thanks
+Terry Boaz Not research as such but I have posted several reviews on the kit I use. Thanks for watching - TMF
Hi m.f have just bought a 1200 gs rallye and am getting conflicting answers about whether the vario panniers/topbox from a f750gs fit a r1200 gs !! Any help /knowledge would be HUGELY appriciated cheers 😁😁
I don’t know - would be very surprised if they’re not identical....
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks so much for the reply 😀 going to call chester mottorad and double double check ! Cheers ( great vids btw )
I'm touring for a couple of weeks with a rental 2017 R1200GS that comes with a full set of BMW Vario Panniers and top box. *Can anyone please tell me the internal dimensions of the inside removable cases for them?*
I'm bringing a 17" laptop if I can, but I don't know if it will fit inside either the side cases or the top box, and I would like to know before lugging the thing all the way down to the south island of New Zealand with me... Cheers!
HI. I am looking to buy some cases. Would you still recommend this panniers? If you have to go shopping again, would you buy them or you would try something new? Thanks!
Yes, absolutely I'd still have them......
Hi there. I'm new to your videos, I've seen a lot in about 1 hour. Your videos are very good. Thumbs up. Happy new year.
Hi Mickey - Great to hear you're enjoying my efforts, makes it all worthwhile! Happy New Year to you and yours too....all the best - TMF
Will the top case accommodate two normal sized helmets
No
Cam we install this top box on bmw g310gs
in your opinion, the vario side cases weight about the same compared to a side case with a rack system or less?
More! The vario cases are heavy!
Can the boxes/cases be removed from the bike while being locked? Seems very easy for thieves. Am I wrong?
No they are locked in place…
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks a lot
Hi TMF, do you know if the vario top case will accommodate a full face ADV style helmet? Something like a Nexx wild street or an AGV AX8 or equivalent. Thanks a lot in advance!
Yep - mine takes my Arai Tour X4 no problems....
Hi, When you go on long trips like the NC500, at night do you cart your panniers and top box in to the hotel room or do you leave them in place and use inner bags? I have been carrying mine in but in a single room a pair of panniers and a top box use up a lot of floor space especially if you get a cramped single room.
+fazer john I just take the inner bags and leave the panniers etc locked on the bike - far too heavy to keep carrying into hotel rooms!
TheMissendenFlyer many thanks, then I will do the same 👍
great vid m8. Will buy my set of panniers tomorrow. used but in very good condition for only 500Euro. :-)
+bessari Sounds like you got yourself a bargain!
I like these due the ability to extend and the lack of extra framework to attach them too...
@@TheMissendenFlyer so you would buy them again for your next GS bike? Or you would change for a Aluminum case? They told me that plastic is not that good vs aluminum? Hope you can help me decide..
I don't think I would bother with side cases at all - just get a top box and use a roll bag for touring (like I did on my Norway trip).
Hey missenden, i have just bought the new 2021 r1250gs te, what panniers do you suggest for that, obvs things have moved on since this was posted
Well actually the vario panniers haven't changed! Now I'd go for the vario top box and a seat mounted roll bag personally...
Someone may have already asked you this but can you fit a full face lid in the topbox? I've heard you can fit one in the left pannier.
You can indeed - in the left pannier and the top box when extended, no problem....
+TheMissendenFlyer Great! I've heard some people have trouble with them but maybe they're older models.
Maybe - I suppose it depends on the size of your helmet too!
How is the durability of the Vario cases? Would they stand up to heavy, nearly daily, usage? If not, is there something you could recommend instead? Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
I think they’re pretty tough, mine are still going strong!
Can the exhaust side bag fit a full face helmet with the bag extended out?
No...
Hi mate, nice vid. Do you know if those are good for GSA too? Thanks.
+Roger Morello I don't no - the GSA comes with the scaffolding for the aluminium paniers (one of the reasons I didn't go for the GSA!) - I'm not sure if the scaffold can be removed and these fitted instead....possible I guess! One to ask the dealer.....
Thanks mate will check. Cheers
I have these and love them. Any idea what the design function is for the two black "notches" on the top edge of each side case? They are too shallow to connect any strap to as far as I can tell (and unfortunately).
Haven't got a clue! ...though I have just found out what the notches on the front of the top case are for.....
+TheMissendenFlyer Do tell!
....all will be revealed in my next video!
The bike comes with requisite mountings for panniers but not for the top box
You sure? I thought the bike came as standard with all the fittings you needed for the vario panniers and top case???
Vario obviously (as that's what I bought!).....
Very expensive now. Just been quoted £2200 to fit to a BMW 1250 GSA
Wow - they're good but not worth that......
Hi do you know if vario panniers from an older gs will fit the 1250?
I dont know 100% but pretty sure they do….
Good man Andy!
Thanks!
what about the key, what happens if there sold privatley?........
It's matched to the bike, so they prettty much have to stay with it!
Great reviews always. Thank yoi
Thank you Roxic12 - glad you enjoyed it!
Are these compatible to new 2018 GS? For e.g. if I buy a second hand off 2014 GS, will it fit?
yes I believe so....
Hey mate! I have been looking for a way to mount additional drybags to the bike. Since there are no mounting points on the Vario bags I tried Kreiga but does not work so good. I was thinking of mounting a Dryspec d38 but might be too big. Have you come up with a way to add additional luggage ?
Sorry Arthur no I haven’t....
TheMissendenFlyer I just ordered a Dryspec D28 Dual End Dry bag. I think this will work in front of the top case. I will send you a pic of it mounted once it arrives.
TMF, do you find the cases are big enough for touring?
+Boodieman72 yes, sure do - although I've only ever been away for a few days not weeks (but I wouldn't anticipate a problem...).
+Damian Faulkner How odd, no I haven't noticed (but I will go and check)...are you using yours everyday? Mine only get occasional use....
+Damian Faulkner ...yeah, dealer job for warranty claim I reckon...
Does anyone know the weight of the vario top case?
Where did you buy those cases
BMW dealer in Maidenhead…
Is that the BMW low seat, and is it comfortable?
Are you using the inner bags?
@@TheMissendenFlyer No. Since I organize by using drybags and packing cubes, I find it silly to put in another bigger bag. The point is, I wish I knew or been told in the beginning to consider other options instead of buying from the dealer theses Vario cases.
Great review.
+2 up Adventurers Thank you :0)
Thanks you just showed me how to open it! I was stuck
Do you have the quick shifter on your gs?
Hi David, no I don't - I regard quick-shifters as something you'd have on a track day sports bike rather than a road bike (just my preference, I know lots of road riders have them). Do you have one fitted? I've never ridden with one on any bike.....cheers for watching - TMF
Great video! Thank you! :)
Thank you for watching!
Great job - thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Nice review, thanx!
Thanks for watching and for stopping by! All the best - TMF
