It’s too bad he chooses to play more simplistic. I get that playing to the music is important but I’d still love to hear him play more complex stuff from time to time.
Man, I love Jeff's playing so much. He is the the definition of a subtle player. Not flashy at all. His lines are always amazing, tasty, and, yes, funky, but he knows PJ is not a bass forward band so he just does his thing right on the edge of the spotlight. It makes it easy to miss how great he is. I bet if you listen to their hits you've already heard and focus on the bass you would be surprised at the nuance of what he is actually playing.
thats what I've always said about guys like Jay Bentley with Bad Religion. Theres a certain level of self awareness that goes into bass, If you have a dynamic high end of the band, understanding your role and holding it down is incredibly valuable. A great guitarist or in this case as well with Eddie Vedder who has great vocal tone, being able to be a rock for the foundation to be built is super important. Not every bassist needs to be Matt Freeman, a good solid foundation if often all you need.
@@YMDBass Absolutely agree. You need to know what kind of band and music you are playing. The self awareness you mentioned is, IMO, a mark of a truly masterful bass player.
One of the best song supporting bassists out there. One thing I do love about him is his tone always sounds great in big rooms. It's never too boomy and always cuts thru mix. Huge fan!
So happy to see a Pearl Jam deep cut here. For other great Pearl Jam deep cuts I recommend Porch, Tremor Christ, WMA, and All Those Yesterdays. There are tons of greats though, can't go wrong
The ending of this is a reference to the early Michael Jackson song "Ben", which was about a rat (based on the book Willard). "Ben, the two of us need look no more".
I had ‘Vs’ and ‘Ten’ back-to-back on a cassette that I listened to on repeat, my little Walkman was cool enough to have auto-flip so it could play until the batteries ran out. Not even a big fan of this particular song (except the chorus is huge), but man, it made my chest feel so good hearing this thanks Mark!
When I saw them around the No Code album, they played Rats and Jeff used his upright bass for this song. You can also tell every song Jeff is the major song writer
Clicked on this one as soon as I saw it. One of my favorite PJ tracks. Jeff Ament is a super tasteful player, and I love his use of the 12 string bass on some tracks, such a cool sound.
I never cared too much for Pearl Jam until I met the singer in one of my old bands. Even though we were post hardcore, his four favorite bands were Strung Out, Lagwagon, Tool, and Pearl Jam. We knew when he was driving the van that we were going to have to listen to a lot of those four bands. I really gained a respect for Pearl Jam, Jeff Ament in particular. A lot of metal and punk kids sleep on them but they're actually pretty punk adjacent at times (particularly the albums Vitalogy and No Code) and are really great rock musicians that should get more praise then they do.
Fun fact. Original title for this album was Five Against One and was released for a limited time with that title. I still have my original cassette tape.
Ya, Jeff and dUg from King's X both copped the 8 and 12 string basses from Tom Peterson of Cheap Trick. Hamers for everyone. Speaking of King's X, Jeff is one of their biggest supporters. You can see him, as well as Jerry Cantrel, sporting a King's X shirt in early promo shots.
If you want to venture down another rabbit hole check out a band called Sunny Day Real Estate! They’re more of an Indie grunge band from the early ‘90’s, but one of my personal favorites. A good one to start with is “Seven” off the album Diary.
Im not a bass player, I dont know a damn thing about writing a bass line, but I love everything I've heard from Ament in Pearl Jam. Their songs are fkn phenomenal. Eddie is an outstanding song writer and the band is composed of geniuses. Ament even plays fretless guitar. I cant even wrap my head around that. And the stand up bass, too. Geez. Rats has always been a personal favorite. That chorus, especially the 3rd one where Eddie strains a little is so badass and what are the guitars doing during the chorus. Oh and of course, Dave A is kickass, dope drummer. The Pearl Jam discography is epic. Too many incredible songs. Their B-sides and imports (non studio album songs) are better than most bands careers.
He is low key probably the best rock bassist of that era. Monster player, but so versatile doing what is right for the song, but knows when to take his moments.
Rats is one of my absolute fave Pearl Jam songs both due its music and the meaning of the lyrics in which humans are compared to "disgusting" rats and it turns out they are much better than us. If you don't know, the last line, "Ben, the two of us need look no more" is from an early career Michael Jackson song about his pet rat, Ben.
I'm not a fan of this song at all, but I am a big fan of Jeff Ament he was an inspiration of mine as the only grunge bass player who played fretless bass and 12 string bass as well. I even bought a Hamer bass because I loved his tone so much back then
I'd love to see you analyse Billy Bad Breaks by The Damned. Paul Gray plays some great rich Rickenbacker bass riffs on this track - as well as countless others...
JEFF AMENT MY FAVORITE BASS PLAYER!! PEARL JAM ARE MY FAVORITE BAND ON THIS CRAZY PLANET. YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT "WHY GO" OR "JEREMY" INCREDIBLE BASS LINES FROM JEFF!! "DIRTY FRANK" IS ANOTHER ONE. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AWESOME VIDEO!! 😊💓🔥🤘✌️🎸
Dude. Get into pearl jam. Their first album is great but its aged a little poorly. Kinda has butt rock vibes now. but PJ is one of those bands that aged like wine (sort of. There latest album is terrible) if you dont believe me listen to You Are or I Got ID. They are one of the best to do it!
Jeff Ament has been a serious bass talent for his entire career
It’s too bad he chooses to play more simplistic. I get that playing to the music is important but I’d still love to hear him play more complex stuff from time to time.
Ament is great at adding fills without distracting away from the song
This was an excellent surprise song choice. Totally unexpected.

Good choice of Pearl Jam song! The groove of this track makes it one my favourites by the band, and it's nice to see it getting some love.
The opening bass line to Waiting for Stevie, off their most recent album, is epic. And his work on Got to Give is stellar. He’s as good as ever.
Waiting for Stevie is just overall one of their best songs in years, and Jeff's bass line is sick on it.
One of the best song supporting bassists out there. One thing I do love about him is his tone always sounds great in big rooms. It's never too boomy and always cuts thru mix. Huge fan!

I always loved that Eddie threw this in here
Cool never knew that!

If you want another deep cut by Pearl Jam with funky bass and some of the best drumming found in any of their songs, check out "Dirty Frank"
Where's Mike mccreedy? My god he's been ate
Well, that dirty Frank was a bad mother.....😜🤘
@@thegoatchild3545Shut your mouth!

One of my favorite Pearl Jam deep cuts. Jeff is amazing and the message is still relevant
Jeff Ament - absolute beast on the bass
Rats is such an amazing song and I love finally seeing somebody dive into it, they have so many not so heard songs that are awesome, great pick! ❤❤❤
Finally I see someone mentioning Jeff. His bass lines are one of the many iconic things of this band.
He is seriously underrated and serves each song perfectly and actually has so much more to his lines than most realize.
Pearl Jam, finally..my fave
Please do more of Jeff's stuff. He is so interesting to disect.
Fun fact. Original title for this album was Five Against One and was released for a limited time with that title. I still have my original cassette tape.
Fun Fact: this track was actually first workshopped by Mother Love Bone in 1989 during the sessions for Apple.
Please do a video on Jeremy, which has the distinction of being played on a Hamer 12-string bass.
Dance of the Clairvoyant by Pearl Jam I recommend to you. They have an abundance of styles and sounds.
Jeff doesn’t play bass on that, stone and him swap. And it’s a very basic bass track
Great choice! Another great bass choice from this album is Indifference or W.M.A. Keep up the deep PJ picks!

JEFF AMENT and MIKE MCCREADY and STONE GOSSARD are guitar legends! ✌️
First 3 Pearl Jam albums are all-timers.
Riot act is my favorite personally
Jeff is incredible. He was different out the gate on Ten. Cool bass lines, fretless basses, 12 string basses, a huge part of Pearl Jams sound.
If you want to venture down another rabbit hole check out a band called Sunny Day Real Estate! They’re more of an Indie grunge band from the early ‘90’s, but one of my personal favorites. A good one to start with is “Seven” off the album Diary.
Love this album, love this song and i've never noticed the chords in the chorus before.
Love your show! Primus, Pearl Jam, Face to Face, etc. So Good!!

My Father's Son from the Lightning Bolt album is another killer bass groove!
Not only a bass with octave strings. But has also used a fretless bass!!
Can you please do a video of Soundgarden, Ben Shepherd, thanks love the vids😊
Favourite Pearl Jam song!
You should watch the live pearl jam doing the whos real me video and watch jeff rip on that song. So good.
I'm not a fan of this song at all, but I am a big fan of Jeff Ament he was an inspiration of mine as the only grunge bass player who played fretless bass and 12 string bass as well. I even bought a Hamer bass because I loved his tone so much back then
Honestly, my favorite song on VS.
I didn't know you were from NE LA. I was born and raised in Shreveport.
Love your channel.
I'd be very interested for your take on some of Mike Mills' playing with R.E.M. one day.
Id like to see you react to Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers - Primus live Woodstock. so good man...
Like the wonderful, Tom Peterson(of Cheap Trick), Jeff Ament often plays a 12 String Bass
I think next one must WMA from same album. Whole song on one bass part...
The lyrics on the outro of this tune are taken from the first line of the Michael Jackson tune, Ben.
"Ben, the two of us need look no more"
Oh, wow!
Let’s get some Talking Heads up in this channel. Tina Weymouth is the Queen
If you’re looking to dive back into the early 90s…
“Grease Box” - Tad
“Prove You Wrong” - Prong
“Thumb” - Kyuss
“Shogun Named Marcus”- Clutch
I'd love to see you analyse Billy Bad Breaks by The Damned. Paul Gray plays some great rich Rickenbacker bass riffs on this track - as well as countless others...

Lots of tasty bass bits exist from Jeff
Northwest Louisiana. You up near Shreveport area??
Check out "Hail, Hail" live and "Breakerfall" killer bass lines
Breakerfall or save you
Finally! 🤤
This song is inspired by Waiting Room by Fugazi, you know that long pause...
Very Flea-inspired bassline in the verse
WMA has another great bass part off the same album.
Next up, do Dirty Frank. That's the other PJ funk.
You play an upright too
It isn't just volume, they pick up the tempo gradually.its called a swell .volume plus beat
Check out Dirty Frank!
Vs. is their best album.
I have the anthology if you want to see the music
Mate...I notice you love Karnivool, a great Aussie band.
But how have you not reacted to Cog???
It just has to be.
Please do Lounge Act by Nirvana
Please check out Watchtower - The Fall of Reason 🖐️😁
It’s a hard funk song.
None of PJ best stuff was ever released on FM radio.
Makes sense, this track is pretty different from what I know of PJ!
after 30+ years, this is the only pj album i'll listen to anymore.
Dude. Get into pearl jam. Their first album is great but its aged a little poorly. Kinda has butt rock vibes now. but PJ is one of those bands that aged like wine (sort of. There latest album is terrible) if you dont believe me listen to You Are or I Got ID. They are one of the best to do it!
Day 20 of asking for A Million Bucks by ALL
Vitalogy was the last good PJ album.
No. Yield is the best 😊
