So can I correctly assume that a keto diet coupled with fermented foods like Yogurt, Kefir and Sauerkraut. Would be a great combination to support Indole Lactate. Or would the BHB be sufficient to support increases of Lactobacilius populating the gut on its own?
In this case, the BHB appears effective in and of itself. That said, I certainly wouldn't discourage from including low-carb fermented foods like those you described.

Kousmine, Seignalet, Wahls... Many people stated that some kind of diet can really help controling these kind of deseases. It's somewhat interesting to see recent research go in that way too. Myself had clear symptoms of auto-immune desease and having some in my family, I saw a drastic difference when dumping gluten first. But it was just a first step. I'm trying to go on a keto diet, as I saw some other improvement when lowering sugar & fibers. But i can hardly stay on that more than 3 weeks at the moment... If you have any guideline or thing that might help me, don't hesitate to share ! :) Many thanks for your work, I'm sure it will help people.
@@nicknorwitzPhD Beyond the social constraints, I feel that I haven't found yet the right balance in macros & supplements to maintain a good energy level & keep my weight (i'm 34 yo/ 191cms/ 84kgs, and started doing home workout). Nick, based on what you said here - calming inflammatory immune cells - do you think exogenous ketones could help someone with mast cell activation due to hereditary alpha-tryptasemia?
Nick, congratulations on saying that ketogenic diets put the body into a state of ketosis. I agree with you that ketosis defines a ketogenic diet. Everyone reacts differently to diets and not everyone can enter ketosis on a particular diet. If no ketosis, then no keto diet for that person. However, there are many “experts” that define a keto diet based on the food that is eaten and have no regards for ketosis (Dr. Westman is one). What do you think about doctors who “prescribe” a keto diet but then tell people not to measure ketones and say that ketosis is not a goal of their keto diet?
I'd say steady state ketones levels don't necessarily tell you about actually ketone flux (generation and use); however, for someone starting a ketogenic diet where the metabolic state of ketosis is the goal, I think measuring ketones by finger stick is sensible.
Keto seems very beneficial from a brain health and mood prospect are there any studies in regards using a keto diet helps wth eating disorder recovery?
Great video. Can you make a video of the effect of β-Hydroxybutrate on the Hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCAR2). That seems to be and effective pathway in which a ketogenic diet can have positive effects on auto immune diseases.
Well, based on these data exogenous ketones may be beneficial. But in terms of clinical/translational, I still presume a well-formulated ketogenic diet may be more effective because of other potential mechanisms at play.
It seems like we really can’t tolerate much sugar. The Ketogenic diet seems to improve every neurological condition, does it not? The gut ketones, well that is something else, fascinating.
With more and more evidence showing up in favor of a ketogenic diet it seems almost immoral that it is not recommended more by health authorities... i've been eating a very low carb/ketogenic diet for the last 3-4 years after gradually transitioning into it over a longer period. However I don't seem to be making a lot of ketones (0.2-0.3 most of the time) even though I keep total carbs below 30 or so grams daily... Hopefully I have some hidden ones too...

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this seems to be one of the first studies that indicates possible health benefits of exogenous ketones outside of purely raising ketones for the sake of a momentary energy boost?
I have a family member struggling with MS and it has gotten steadily worse over the last years. But she fears fat and considers it unhealthy, just follows the standard medical advice, as far as I am aware. (I am not familiar with the standard MS meds but I think they are costly and don't address the roots) I could offer ketone supplements, perhaps? Anyone in this situation have suggestions? If and once she experiences significant benefit, that might help open up her mind, and then sources including this video might be referred to
It's possible routine ketone supplementation could help, if you can get access to a ketone ester or other potent supplement. Be warned, they don't taste great. Maybe start by shifting to a moderate fat, high-fiber, high protein low glycemic load diet as a transition? Perhaps if the fat is in conventional "health fat" sources, like avocados, raw nuts and fatty fish, she'd be more receptive? And then stack the ketone supplement on top of that?
@nicknorwitzPhD Thanks. I take a ketone salt; I can sell the idea as an electrolyte supplement. So no taste issue there. Not sure about acceptance of the other diet suggestions, but I really appreciate your ideas! (Edit: apparently she knows she is supposed to have fish, but she hates fish. Maybe we need to find her least disliked choice. For me, I know that not all sardines taste the same!)
What ultimately got me to put my scepticism aside was someone saying "you're already ill. Just try it for a few months. Nothing bad will happen in a few months."
I need help. Why is it that I'm been carnivore since February. I eat eggs and steak yet. I'm barely producing ketones and my blood sugar won't drop below 100. Sadly it's all linked to my blood pressure which is staying above 160/100. And the only blood pressure med that works is a tranquilizer called clonidine.
How old are you? Focusing on being in true ketosis more frequently could help. Carnivore does not necessarily induce ketosis unless you are eating more fat than protein (something around a 2:1 gram ratio), not overeating protein overall (total needs depend on activity level, 0.5-0.6g/lb bodyweight if sedentary, higher end around 1g/lb bodyweight if very active), and practicing time-restricted feeding (finish eating latest 3 hours before bed, have minimum 14 hours but ideally 16-18 between last meal day prior and and first meal next day). Also may want to look at electrolytes, getting enough magnesium and potassium.
Are you eating enough fat? You want to aim for your meals to be at least 20% fat by weight. So a 1kg steak for example should have at least 200g of fat. You can also add fat to leaner cuts. If you're eating lower fat you're likely eating more protein and thus larger portion sizes to compensate and a lot of your fuel will be coming from protein converted into glucose instead of fat. For this reason I actually prefer lamb to beef as it's fattier and (at least where I live) much cheaper. Adding butter to eggs also works well as it binds with them in say an omelette.
People believe our ancestors just lived with these conditions because they don't understand that they were considered rare. The primary driver of chronic disease conditions is the food we eat, and more specifically seed oils (which is in everything now-read Dr. Knobbe's Ancestral Diet revolution for a lot of good research) as well as ultra processed foods which makes up the majority of the American diet. Our bodies are designed to eat whole natural foods. The food industry is to blame, it is cheaper to produce Frankenfoods with a lot of chemical ingredients than real foods. This is why when you look at the ingredient list on packages you don't know what any of it is if you can even pronounce it.
Thank you so much. But why would the body attack itself? Surely it is more likely that there are external factors at play and our immune system is doing damage control. However, if we do not eat a ketogenic diet, which may be the proper human diet for all humans, we cannot get on top of these external toxins/poisons/harmful lifestyles. These hidden ketones explain why my slim and active husband doesn’t have measurable ketones on an animal based diet but has put his Irritable Bowel Syndrome into remission
I just saw your previous video in which you mentioned you had 3k calories as maintenance? This is way too abnormal given your frame and body size, what does it indicate about your metabolism?
It indicates that you can eat a lot more calories when you're in ketosis, because you breathe them out, pee them out and even poop them out, as Nick has shown in previous videos. You probably still have a lot of videos to watch!!
It tells you fat gain is more about insulin than calories. Insulin low - almost no fat storage - only muscle building. If you’re eating huge amounts it’s going to spike insulin even if it’s just fat and protein. So yes you can definitely gain weight on a carnivore or no carb diet but a person has to be trying to gain weight, forcing food in. Anybody can gain weight just looking at the prepackaged keto garbage treats. Stay away from those. Real food only.
@@aurapopescu1875 but that makes no sense? Im not sure about this but logically if you have a efficient metabolic system, you should function the same with lower calories and maintain the same weight? 3k is way too high unless he's very active especially as maintenance, i eat 3k calories as dirty bulk and live a normal lifestyle

Please discuss science on COIMBRA PROTOCOL
Not something with which I'm particular familiar. What are your thoughts?
Please dont go the way of most health influencers with the shocked face in the video....please dont go down that path. You are too good for that.
Forgive me but I may dabble with different thumbnail/title techniques... glad you're here for the content :)
Happy for your husband :). There’s certainly a lot we don’t know…

Best thing you can do for a MS/T3D patient is to not feed them.
He was(still is?) a distance runner, probably a very active young man....
@@yashshaw9199 You don't understand how ketosis works, and how it affects the mitochondria. Go back and watch Nick's videos posted over the past 6 months or more. Also watch Prof. Benjamin Bikman's lectures on ketosis. He explains how ketosis makes the mitochondria more "wasteful" - the exact opposite of more "efficient".

Thanks, stay furious!
furious? I try to stay cheerful. Funny typo... made my chuckle.
@ no typo just trying to get your attention and give you a laugh!
@@joeberrouard3743 Ha. Appreciate.
Its funny to me that you are talking about many "progressive" nutrition topics, when Harvard, your very own medicine school, is home of some of the most ludicrous and false nutrition myths out there.
Every institution is a mix of progressive and conservative research. What get's amplified by legacy and social media is also a function of selection bias... but some us us develop our own voices and platforms...
