Just in case anyone is curious what's next for this system: Wall mounting (will involve wood), VR / Gaming setup (Vive, Rift and game controllers), Storage additions (for DVR/game storage), Audio setup, Passive CPU cooling (I hope), LED configuration (probably to disable them most of the time) -- and probably most importantly, GAME OF THRONES TONIGHT!! #WinterIsHere
@Paul's Hardware Roccat makes a pretty sweet HTPC laptop keyboard and mouse setup, I think it would be a viable replacement for your current "situation" lol.
That US is ultra weird, Hardware supermarket next to nowhere highway lands, candy next to the GTX cards. No buyers or what so ever, why is that store so big, and why are their stores all over the US doing this bullshit? What if buyers all walk in? Guess they need to make some money, so they need $430 for them! Big Bullshit store! Guess there are a lot of cheap empty stores not making anything these days, in the old days, people needed stores.
Thursday in the AM is not their busy time. I have been in Fry's when there were lines wrapped around the building. The Graphics card price is because of the miners.
Paul's Hardware I actually appreciate it. With all the water problems we have especially in your part of the world, we need to conserve all we can! Pretty lawns are great, but having drinking water is even better!
Daniel Herrera its bs California is supposed to naturally get water from the rockys but they divert it to Nevada and other neighboring states just so they can raise our water bill
Well seeing as there is a huge lack of large plants and prairie grasses, there is nothing to capture and hold the water in the ground. Maybe if people stopped cutting their lawns to under 5 inches the landscape would be more healthy.
Good choice on the HDHomeRun! I've been rocking a HDHomeRun Prime for my HTPC and Xbox360 extenders for the rest of my house for the past 6 years. Was on Verizon FiOS and then moved to TWC here in Orange County. I use Windows 7 - Windows Media Center for my DVR and TV Watching. Didn't need my HTPC to be too crazy - It has an old PNY GT 240, an antec earthwatts 350watt 80 plus bronze, an FX-6350, 8gb corsair xms3 DDR3, 2x 1tb HDDs, 1x 120gb boot SSD, and and external seagate 5tb usb3.0 drive. It serves as my Plex Streaming server as well. Using WOL through my hand phone to wake up the system remotely when I want to stream movies. I used to leave the system on all the time until I figured out how to get WakeOnLAN properly working through my DD-WRT router. Great for 1080p content and am able to do Steam In Home Game Streaming from my gaming PC upstairs over wireless gigabit without a problem. In the other areas of the house, I use Xbox360s as media extenders for TV/DVR/Plex Playback over wireless with the wireless 5ghz dongles. 7/23/2017 edit: i just saw the part about plex supporting TV and DVR. I haven't been paying attention to my plex server lately and this is a cool new addition! However, I just noticed, it does not support DRM. So basically, you're stuck with local channels and cannot get any of the cable channels.
wow. This project is very highly involved with a lot of components and software then I ever thought. You are a very well trained for the amount of complexities that are involved.Thank You for your time and effort's of sharing your expertise.
I literally just built a similar system this weekend. Ryzen 1600x with a Noctua L9a cooler (run a little warm), Gigabyte AB350N (ITX), housed in a Fractal Design Node 202, 32GB of Ballistix DDR4 3200 (overkill but all I had), a 1TB Crucial SSD and an XFX RX480 Black Edition (ref style). Thinking I need a Nano or RX520 slim to make room for an H55 to better cool the CPU and eventually I'll down grade the ram to a 16GB kit. My build was meant to be an HTPC slash grab and go mobile stream system for cons and gatherings. I have Plex, Steam, and PS4 Remote Play installed, thinking I need to find a front end that launches automatically and can access all the above. (a better non-windows desktop UI)
If you don't mind an external box, there are also some external USB tuners which can use CableCards. An example is the Hauppauge 2650. It works in Windows and Linux.
Thanks for the vid. I'm still on my Windows 7 HTPC build that I did back in 2012. I look forward to seeing more of your Plex experience, and how you work things out with your surround sound set up. I don't game on my HTPC, but I love how well Media Center works on it. I typically keep my HTPC in stereo output. Then my receiver runs Dolby Pro Logic to make it 5.1. When I'm in Windows Media Center, it just automatically changes to 5.1 output sound so I can go seamlessly between things like UA-cam, Netflix, and my OTA channels. Though I know I'll have to upgrade eventually, I hope to find a good solution that functions well for me. Anyway, good luck!
If you are still working on all these, I've spend years messing with all this and would be happy to chat with you and share my experience. Currently I run Kodi/Plex, HDHomeRun, and MCEBuddy and have everything stored on my NAS except of the LIVE recordings. I'd like to separate the recording PC out, but don't currently. I do have a small i3 NUC as my bedroom HTPC just running Kodi and that works well, but I still switch to an AppleTV for Netflix and other media on that TV... I use a windows service to run a batch script to grab the tvguide free every other day or so so it's always up to date. I use OTA channels only.
i use nextPvr as backend (for hdhomerun prime) and kodi as front end. found it works the best for me as a wmc replacement on windows 10. got plex dvr going on back there too.
Hey Paul, if you're looking for a new keyboard for your htpc, I would highly recommend a Logitech k400 plus, I got mine refurbished on newegg for like $25, and its got a second left click button on the upper left hand corner of the keyboard, and a track pad on the right, making it super convenient for use from the couch.
i know this video is a couple years old.. but you mentioned having an air compressor... what kind of setup would be ok to use on pc hardware for that instead of canned air
Paul, I have been using an HD Homerun Prime for a while now and it is fairly reliable. The only bit of advice I have for you, it will occasionally slow down considerably and I will encounter issues streaming live tv. I believe the unit is running out of memory after a weeks of constant use. A quick reboot of the device fixes the issue. I would recommend looking into some sort of automated power cycling for the device. I would just set it to reboot once a day for good measure. Especially, since you are wall mounting this system, having to manually unplug the device may get annoying. Also, can you do a full review/setup video on plex and their dvr service. I am interested in utilizing this feature. I have been doing this manually with a mythtv setup for years, but plex's solution seems much easier and likely less work. Thanks for another great video.
You can get windows media center running on windows 10. I did it a long time ago and still no issues. Several guides are out there for it. Also plex doesnt support live tv on pc, so not sure how that solves your problems.
Try out the HD home run DVR software or even the live one. It looks pretty slick and let's u watch live TV too. I'm curious what u think as I wanted to do something similar
The great thing with plex is that you can access your library from any device. Tv's/phones/pads etc. Stick a few nas drives and you have rom to rip all the bluerays you want. (i just use my storage server for plex and use chromecast on my tv's. Don't watch regular tv anymore). But i do envy your hw, my old server runs on a q9550@3.4 :) But it do transcode blueray rips just fine. (When i upgrade main pc i will move my 4790k there so i can switch to 4k transcoding.)
I'm still tossing between a 1600 or 1700 for my HTPC gaming build loved my 1800x so much I'm looking at a small form project. thanks paul you motivated me haha.
instead of trying to fully passively cool a pc just have a couple of fans running at 200 rpm. i use be quiet silent wings 3 for it and i cant hear the fans at all and they do a good job
I have Windows 10 and Windows Media Center working together (unsupported, obviously) and will be sticking with that until it breaks. I'd like to switch to Plex and an HD Homerun (or other supported tuner installed in my NAS), but I really love the "Chase Play" feature that Windows Media Center offers. Works great to come in at halftime of a football game and "chase the recording" to the end. From what I've heard, Plex doesn't have that yet. That would get me to buy a Plex Pass right away.
+1 for the dogs!! LOL... but seriously, always love your videos. You always get down to basics really quickly, this had been a GREAT spending of 16 minutes and 27 seconds 👍
ZACH BLAZE Kodi is decent. I use showbox way more though. I think Kodi has a lot more functionality since you can add on a lot of different multimedia apps. He might use that along with his HTPC.
Any interest in playing blu rays? 4k is pretty tough with new chip sets but one of the reason I made a HTPC a decade ago was to bypass region lock issues.
Raykal Adiansjah Miners. Blame them. Good news is that etherium had a price crash over the weekend. It’s back up slightly, but hopefully the price crash means that the etherium mining craze is probably dying down, and that everything should hopefully be back to normal by late July or early August.
I've been using plex for a few years now and it's amazing. I think you'll end up loving it. Do you have any sort of home server or NAS? You could record all your content to that and save having to put a HDD in your HTPC.
Where is part 2? youtube search option on your page isn't working. I have been looking for HTPC ideas and really like how part one went. Really want to see part 2.
While I'm only about 5:15 into the video, I've already seen a couple of things you could do differently. First, Plex has that lifetime pass. Secondly, the makers of the HDHomerun are making a DVR themselves. The HDHomerun View app, which "plugs in" to the DVR Service, also already supports viewing DRM Video such as HBO or other Premium Channels. They are planning on adding DRM support for Android and for the DVR Service as well. Also, that DVR Service fee is yearly, not monthly.
I will replace my iogear remote keyboard, when it is totally dead. Great Keyboard. I got here because I am researching plain OTA DVR options to replace my Win 7 HTPC and also thinking of new 4k TV. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I have a wifey. Current setup uses a programmable remote were A / C turn on/ off htpc and B / D turn on netflix. She so does not care about this that despite the fact that I have cheat sheets etc, she does not turn the rig on very often. .. I will be putting up goals and specs somewhere, probably wordpress for my next build. I don't do gaming, so my hardware req are a lot less.
Hmmm, my "ultimate" htpc would have a built in display for showing cd tracks without having to switch on telly. Is that even possible? Would I'd love to know which case to start with.
That Salesman was Savage!
Haneesh Raja and hilarious
Just in case anyone is curious what's next for this system: Wall mounting (will involve wood), VR / Gaming setup (Vive, Rift and game controllers), Storage additions (for DVR/game storage), Audio setup, Passive CPU cooling (I hope), LED configuration (probably to disable them most of the time) -- and probably most importantly, GAME OF THRONES TONIGHT!! #WinterIsHere
Good job buying only the thing you needed from Fry's.
Looking forward to it, Paul!
It was actually weird seeing a Fry's bag again. My city has banned plastic bags, so I haven't seen one of those bags in years :)
It seems You went to a lot of hassle & expense just to get dx12 gaming..which still doesn't work as well as dx 11 and may never.
@Paul's Hardware Roccat makes a pretty sweet HTPC laptop keyboard and mouse setup, I think it would be a viable replacement for your current "situation" lol.
"Not a problem, Bitwit" Bahahahaha!
Straight savage.
Too good
lit
the laugh was the most passionate noise I've ever heard Paul make
dat guy burnsss 😂
"Not a problem, Bitwit! 👍"
That guy is da real MVP 😂
The footage in this video was just crystal clear. Love your dogs. My husky came up to see what all the fuss was about when they were barking.
"Oh look there's a GTX 1060 here it's in stock *checks 430USD price tag* OH MY GOD"
I can't build my PC because of these guys. It's a disaster
I can't afford one. I'm targeting a budget build
Im selling mine on ebay cause I wanna upgrade, PM me on youtube and ill give you a lower price.
That US is ultra weird, Hardware supermarket next to nowhere highway lands, candy next to the GTX cards. No buyers or what so ever, why is that store so big, and why are their stores all over the US doing this bullshit? What if buyers all walk in?

That lawn is looking dusty paul!
I'll take the fact that you called it a "lawn" as a compliment 😁
Paul's Hardware I actually appreciate it. With all the water problems we have especially in your part of the world, we need to conserve all we can! Pretty lawns are great, but having drinking water is even better!
Daniel Herrera its bs California is supposed to naturally get water from the rockys but they divert it to Nevada and other neighboring states just so they can raise our water bill
Yeah, well you damn Californians be stealin all our water n shit.
Well seeing as there is a huge lack of large plants and prairie grasses, there is nothing to capture and hold the water in the ground. Maybe if people stopped cutting their lawns to under 5 inches the landscape would be more healthy.
Last time I was this early, Jay was doing the same thing....
At least this one is an HTPC+VR. Jay's is just a VR setup
in the title it said htpc-vr lol
Was just about to comment that Paul's HTPC is better than Jay's HTPC. Both performance and price wise.
Agreed... plus Paul's goes way further into being an HTPC...
Maniac_Doz_Gaming | ᴳᵃᵐᵉʳ ... by using a gtx
Your backyard rly looks like piece of desert 🌵😎
Dude you need to do something with that backyard bro....🤮
So is right now just the time when everyone builds a new HTPC? Jay and Bitwit did it around now too
It's HTPC season in the US!
Plex is probably doing a marketing push, every tech channel I follow has been doing Plex projects this month.
Johnathan Radcliff
nobody need this crap Media TV crap, old people....

That beautiful California backyard
makes sense. They can't use water to water their grass. I hear people actually get their gold/yellow lawns painted green. Pretty sad actually
Looking forward to part 2! Would you consider one of those streacom cases?
wow. This project is very highly involved with a lot of components and software then I ever thought. You are a very well trained for the amount of complexities that are involved.Thank You for your time and effort's of sharing your expertise.
FlippinFred Thanks Fred! It would be a lot simpler if not for the cable TV part 😁
No Doubt. :) See you Tuesday.
That impulse buy section gets me everytime at the Fry's here.
Paul when are you going to finish this??
Beautiful garden :) You obviously put quite some effort into it ;)
Great video, I love these vlog style behind the scene ones!
Great video Paul I cant wait to see the next part. Not sure that passive cooler is big enough....
I literally just built a similar system this weekend. Ryzen 1600x with a Noctua L9a cooler (run a little warm), Gigabyte AB350N (ITX), housed in a Fractal Design Node 202, 32GB of Ballistix DDR4 3200 (overkill but all I had), a 1TB Crucial SSD and an XFX RX480 Black Edition (ref style).

actually, I was interested in what model tv you have! great vid Paul.
That camera quality is supreme
Beast of a cooler in the end, will be interesting to see if it works
that green grass 😂
That's one big passive heatsink...
HTPC and Atx ... great combination to find a place for your computer that doesnt suck in the living room
I love this series, hell yea
How do you hook up audio to your receiver? Do you use the receiver for sound?
Your backyard is huge, Paul! I wouldn't know what to do with so much space : D
AWESOME video, Paul!
Thank you, Paul. This was helpful.
been waiting for this continuation
with the hdhomerun you can use KODI for watching the TV so you can have an interface like media center
Love it, Impulse buy section. What I see on the East Coast with Microcenter
Thanks for the vid. I'm still on my Windows 7 HTPC build that I did back in 2012. I look forward to seeing more of your Plex experience, and how you work things out with your surround sound set up. Can't wait to see your results with that cooler.
Looking forward to that passive cooler!
just bought a gtx 1080 ti ftw 3 very happy with the purchase paul great video as always.
Noice... Keep up the awesome!! content. Thanks Paul, Hero and Nori

Your corgi is so adorable. Absolutely love corgis.
Paul you can try KODI formerly known as xbmc, it has tvcapture option and tv guide as well
i use nextPvr as backend (for hdhomerun prime) and kodi as front end. found it works the best for me as a wmc replacement on windows 10. got plex dvr going on back there too.
Silicon Dust has their own TV DVR program if you went that route. You can even DVR to network drives.
it is ridiculous how Paul and jay are slamming 1080Tis in their HTPCs like if it a 1050Ti
GTX 1080 for your HTPC, just in case you need to play that 100K VR Blu-ray.
Ok so I want to play games like overwatch and pubg with good frame rates on high any build suggestions? (Thank you in advance)
Enjoyed watching your dogs go crazy and run and stuff hehe
Hey Paul, if you're looking for a new keyboard for your htpc, I would highly recommend a Logitech k400 plus, I got mine refurbished on newegg for like $25, and its got a second left click button on the upper left hand corner of the keyboard, and a track pad on the right, making it super convenient for use from the couch.
That live TV setup looks like it's going to be pretty slick, just wish the HDHomeRun had more tuners
How about....How to archive DVD and Blu-Ray discs you own so you can stream them on your HTPC
Paul, i hace the hdhomerun prime, Apple TVs with the channels App anda for DVR I hace DVBlink server. Works lime a charm!
i know this video is a couple years old.. but you mentioned having an air compressor... what kind of setup would be ok to use on pc hardware for that instead of canned air
thank you so much for this. i plan to do much the same thing once GPU prices come down.... and SSDs.... and DDR4 RAM....

Great video. Just what I am considering. Except for mainly OTA
Your back yard>>>> 😍😍😍😍😍
i have to say i really enjoyed this vlog!
You can get windows media center running on windows 10. I did it a long time ago and still no issues. Several guides are out there for it. Also plex doesnt support live tv on pc, so not sure how that solves your problems.
Using my Elgato with 1x2 HDMI Slitter with no problems. Splitter support 4K and recording DirectTV through Elgato software.
Try out the HD home run DVR software or even the live one. It looks pretty slick and let's u watch live TV too. I'm curious what u think as I wanted to do something similar
Damnit Paul! I wanna see the rest of this series. Damn you and your cliffhangers.

Paul, you can achieve the same goal with the HDHR with kodi. They have built in add-ons for the Homerun that include an EPG. Well at least mine does.
What breed of dogs do you have? They are adorable.
instead of trying to fully passively cool a pc just have a couple of fans running at 200 rpm.
i use be quiet silent wings 3 for it and i cant hear the fans at all and they do a good job
Awwww My dude you Got a Pit. I love them. REally good dogs!
Wanted to use Plex at home for the server but it was to expensive. so now using Emby. It works great so far.
Paul...You seriously need The Yard Crashers!!!...Let's create a petition for Paul.
Really awesome. doing mine now aswell
This is pretty Nifty Paul!
Awesome love your videos cant wait for part 2
Lookin' beautiful as ever, Paul!
I have Windows 10 and Windows Media Center working together (unsupported, obviously) and will be sticking with that until it breaks. LOL... but seriously, always love your videos. You always get down to basics really quickly, this had been a GREAT spending of 16 minutes and 27 seconds 👍
Any ETA on Part 2?
Now.
well I think i found something for my 4790k to do after I update in the next few months. Great video Paul!
Why not use Kodi?
Good start Paul
@Paul 1 Question that wlan port on the backside where the io pannel is steal that port lanes with a wlan card inside?
Why not download Kodi and then get the exodus addon?
I am a happy KODI user =)
got it on my A95X Android Box.... happy Days xD
I recently got it on my phone, best thing ever.
ZACH BLAZE Kodi is decent. I use showbox way more though. I think Kodi has a lot more functionality since you can add on a lot of different multimedia apps. He might use that along with his HTPC.
I do like Kodi, and I use it quite a lot on my HTPC, but I'd not yet heard of this Exodus thing. I'll go check it out...
ZACH BLAZE Have happily had Kodi on 2 Firesticks. 4 Android phones and 3 computers 😁😁
Any interest in playing blu rays? 4k is pretty tough with new chip sets but one of the reason I made a HTPC a decade ago was to bypass region lock issues.
Any plans on a part 2? Interested in seeing how the wall mount and passive cooling turned out!
what about uhd Blu Ray DVDs?
Why is the center channel speaker on the bottom?
Holy F, I bought that msi 1060 6gb last month for $260 and now its $430? Wtf
You're the best btw. Love your videos ❤️
Raykal Adiansjah Miners. Blame them. Good news is that etherium had a price crash over the weekend. It’s back up slightly, but hopefully the price crash means that the etherium mining craze is probably dying down, and that everything should hopefully be back to normal by late July or early August.
thats good. now im just trying to get my friends to play games on pc, and its pretty difficult because of whats going on in the market rn.
love your green lawn outside...
Great vid man!
Love your Vlog's Paul.
I love your back yard. Maintenance free. How it should be. 8-)

While Linus' build with his son still wins on cute level, the dogs bring this to a 9.5/10!
You could also download the Media Center on Windows 10. 1 Minute of google
Brilliant Video Top Man Thanks For That.
