I've had the mother grow light for over a year now and I love it! Before I had it, almost all my plants died during the winter months. Now they are healthy and have grown so much in the meantime. I see a big difference when I use the lamp and when not. I have the lamp on a timer so when I'm gone it turns on by itself and my plants get enough light.🥰
This couldn't have come at a better time for me. I've have plants everywhere possible in my house but due to having huge oak, maple and pine trees surrounding my house I have limited areas that would meet their lighting requirements. I've been researching grow lights but it's difficult to find one that is aesthetically pleasing. These will be the perfect solution to my problem. Thank you for this video.
I ordered the 16” Mother version over 15mos ago. I was having a hard time figuring out how to set it up in my space and was using it occasionally in vertical orientation for about 1 year THEN I realized the following growing season that a metal side table could hold this lamp if I use a metal clamp with some vinyl tips and it worked! No dead plants or leaf burn this season for ferns, begonia, orchid, epiphytic cacti plants getting top-down light with 19” clearance under this light. I also use a travel-friendly humidifier on a near daily basis in winter and lamp is not showing signs of rust either. Well made so I highly recommend. Thx Summer Rayne for helping me make an informed decision on this purchase.
Nice topic! I myself have a Sun System Sunblaze 44 that I grow under. It really is about intensity, duration and spectrum pending the desired result one seeks with species. My journey ancient days ago began with reading used books and then working with Saintpaulia. Learned lots. Particularly Saintapaulia can be tricked into a 2 day cycle in 24 hour period. I forget the word for it. I have a 4 chrome shelf unit. The top shelf has containers, fertilizer, soils and sprays I prefer to use. Next shelf is a sunblaze system. 3rd shelf is 2 utility lights with 4ft plant grow lights. Then bottom shelf is water that has set 24 hours after drawn from spigot to evaporate flurides and chlorides. Bought myself a rain barrel to harness the rain and will be using that water instead in the near future. The plants I grow under my Sunsystem are Eyelash Begonias, Primulinas, Oxalis and Heurenia. Under the utility lights are the Viola species I've collected to discover how they adapt to indoor cultivation. So far like roses under lights they are a magnet for spider mites. Last, Another thing about my Sunsystem is I have Seasonal Affective Disorder. This helps me somewhat in winter months to make the eyes dialate so certain chemicals on the brain function. Cultivating under lights is a fun winter activity for me.

Thanks, great video! I have already 2 lights of Mother. I like them a lot. What I do miss is a tripod to attach the lamp so that I can adjust it in height without having to attach it to a wall or cabinet.

SRO....I am bit new to this hobby.....Love grow lites since my apt is light challenged! I took great 'satisfaction' in misting (spraying) my plants twice a day.....after watching a few videos I am wondering if you think spraying your plants is a big waste of time? CCC Austin, TX

I love the design. I would be all over these if they got the color temperature closer to the 3000 range like the Soltec Solutions lights. So much more appealing to my eye anyway. I can't do the intense white similar to the GE grow bulbs. Hopefully they consider releasing a model in that range, if they do that I'm in!

Quick question and I'm sorry if you've already answered this- but are you planning on/have already implented renewable energy on the communal land? It would be really neat to see what you could grow with unlimited energy feeding into these grow lights
We'll be diving more into the energy bit at Flock Finger Lakes-this year and through next year. The place came with propane and electricity. And with five electrical outages just this winter season, it's not a great situation. We are big researchers though, so we want to really take time to research. It bothers us that solar panels have no way of being recycled in this country. We're interested in biodigesters, but will have to figure out how to attach them to the common house. Lots of research to be done in an area we don't feel super well-versed in at this moment. So it's on our agenda, and we'll be doing more of a brain dump with one another and friends in the coming months or so.
The lamp looks amazing and the Hoya growth is so impressive. It would be interesting to find out the impact of bright LED on human vision/pineal gland. I wonder if it is compatible with a dimmer switch for the evenings. Will seriously consider purchasing one or two of these for my house plants to keep them happy through the long cloud-covered British Winters! Maybe it will help with S.A.D, and keep me happy too! :) BTW, loving the beautiful jewel-like earthy colours in the stone of your kitchen countertop!
Actually I have a room with 3 grow lights up they have 4 arms (you can twist them) and you can raise and lower the pole. I am sure that it has seriously helped me with the short days.

Well with full-spectrum lights that "mimic" the sun, I'm guessing they elevate moods and keep our vitamin d in check for sure. And I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see more grow lights with automatic dimmers. That is something we've talked about tackling in the common house at Flock Finger Lakes.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this light. Considered Soltech but their shipping was too expensive while Mother’s was free above a certain amount. I also love the modular design because there isn’t any drilling required. I have false ceilings and Soltech’s ceiling hook couldn’t be installed, and would’ve had to spend more on installation costs for their brackets too.

I think I may have burned the leaves on my rehabbing Verrucosum by giving it too much light - so perhaps a PAR reader might also be in my next purchase. I'm curious, cost-wise, if having an daylight LED bulb in one of my own desk lamps would be similarly effective? Looking forward to more reviews!
You said the right word of "invest" Floral, and I'm glad you did. Good lights are an investment, but since they have such a long run of a decade or more of use, they turn out to be an affordable investment over time for plants.
They indeed have sleek design but too expensive. If you don't care about the looks and in Europe go for Jungle Down Led Bar (they are mostly designed for terrarium but I have awesome experience with them.)
@@Plantenbaas they are very bright and full spectrum white. It’s almost like a fluorescent light and you can connect multiple at the same time. I hv been very happy with them.

Was wondering if you could educate us on how to select the correct output we would need for a given distance between light and plant. I know that each plant type will have different requirements, but I’m trying to establish some minimum output criteria. Are there any particular brands that you have had good success with? My hope is to install low profile LCD “can” lights in the dark areas but am having trouble finding and information telling me how much output is enough.
Great Video :) although I am curious, as a low budget plant enthusiast (and renter so permanent solutions are not the best) how do you find different LED lights do better for your power bill, like is have you noticed over the years the higher tier bulbs are better? Or as far as your bill goes there is not much between a cheaper/smaller bulb. You just loose on plant growth and replacement costs? Love all your videos as an Australian I get to see so many awesome places you get to visit which I could never dream so thank you! P.S we got some neat plant variations down here :)
It's a great question. I've never really paid that close attention to the "befores" and "afters" of my electricity bill and since I have so many different kinds of lights, I'm not sure how to weigh in on that. But it's really worth the effort if one could. I suppose you can do some reverse engineering, since many lights share what wattage they use and then you can calculate for how long you have them on and what your energy bill is charging per kilowatt hour, for example. And glad the travels on the channel have taken you to some cool places. Maybe we'll start traveling more again soon!
I'm really getting into house plants and gardening but I don't have the money to buy all the stuff. Infact I'm making some rain catching trash tubs for the gutters because I can even afford to water everything. Tips on low cost gardening especially vegetables for us seniors.
Depending on what route you go, houseplants do become expensive, especially now, but when I started out-that was not the case. So many great scrappy ideas. Plastic bags over plant cuttings as humidity tents, repurposing tea containers as planters, asking friends and families for cuttings, slowly baking used potting medium to resterilize it, using baking soda as a styptic, making your own neem oil wash or horticulutral soap....there's lots of scrappy solutions that can work without spending too much coin.

question : would this light also work for a verticle garden indoors ? i got one and i have a couple plants in it that are not doing TO well in it and since the watering is frequent (automatic watering system) and i used a advised potting mix i got a feeling its the light itself the wall the plants sit on is about 2 meters ( 6ft.) away from a southern window so ye would adding a light like this work for the plants or is the issue then something i cant see XD

Interesting product. Looks like it's using two different types of LEDs. One side has a blueish almost UV hue to it - but that could be the camera. The spectrum shown is unlike any other Full Spectrum LED that I have seen in the market - e.g. Seoul Semi SunLike or Bridgelux Thrive. I would be curious to see whether it does actually reach 380nm and many don't. Interesting that they don;t mention umol/J - maybe I missed something. That is a perceived problem with Full Spectrum as you'll be hard to find anything above 2umol/j - when a typical Deep Red + White Horti lamp would be closer to 3umol/J. CRI is still used today in the industry but has been replaced with TM-30 - never seen it used or required for horti before. I'm glad you mentioned heat. I watched a Neil deGrasse Tyson podcast about LED lights were he said you can touch an LED bulb - well you can but you'll burn yourself. Many people don't realise that the heat from LEDs comes out the back end. Quite a lot of LED Lighting today is on metal core PCBs rather than FR4 - and i think recently has the same cost. This unit is using a Mid-Power LED - each one being 0.5W. The heat is spread over a 16 inch PCB and uses the housing on the unit as a heatsink. If you have this in a hot kitchen you should be careful. Heat kills LEDs. With this type of product you should have no problems if one of two fail. Being Full Spectrum you wouldn't suddenly have a gap in the spectrum if one failed. I do like the fact this company has said you can rebuy the LED light engine - however i would bet the LED Driver (power supply) will fail before the LEDs do. The Green or Pink hue you mentioned should now be a thing of the past. That was due to the LED binning. Any LEDs that have that today are cheap copies of 10+ year technology. Interestingly Red+Blue LEDs for horti is still a very big thing. However, you need $millions of R&D budget to develop a recipe that will work for the specific crop - adding some UV here, some 435nm there, some 730nm over there, Red+White is the jack of all trades. And gives a high umol/J. The Full Spectrum LEDs were not designed for Horticulture. They were designed for indoor lighting. However, they were very quickly adopted by the horti market and as such are now marketed as horti LEDs. And depending on the CCT can give you more Red or more Blue to your desired likely.
I so badly want to start mesuring PAR both from my lights but also as a tool to understand where I can put plants in my home with just day light. Where did you buy yours? Was it expensive? :)
the PAR meter IS pricey. It's from Apogee and it's around $600. I've included its link in the description and will include here: amzn.to/3uqsvN7. Definitely an investment. I would definitely recommend it for folks who do houseplant consultations/interior design for homes with plants, as I've found it integral for that and just understanding light fairly immediately, but definitely is not a cheap product. it's a tank though. I JUST had to replace the battery after 3-4 years of use.

I have seen some apps that say they measure PAR, PPFD and DLI but what they really do is to run the lux/foot candles measured from your phone through an algorithm based on you putting in what kind of lamp you are using. It hasn't worked to well for me yet! :).
Their customer service team is awesome but the custom and duties cost an arm and a leg. The distance guide is also quite iffy, i followed the instruction but burned some plants during past winter still.
In the US, they will pay for the duties but it would have to be for an order of over $200. I don't know if that was your experience or not, or if that is something new they have implemented since that time.

It's not really detectable by our eyes, but you may start seeing damage in your plants.

Can you please do a comment in a future episode about grow lights and human safety as far as cancer and uv rays? I don’t plan on purposely sitting under one like a sunlamp but I have had concerns about placing them on a bookshelf close to the sofa where people regularly sit for long periods of time. It’s unclear what info currently out there is real science and it would be great to see a segment with a scientist and dermatologist maybe an ophthalmologist. It’s one thing to grow things in your basement or a kitchen corner but when it comes to putting them in living rooms and bedrooms what is safe?
Hello! I have extremely sensitive eyes with ultra thin cornea's, and asked my ophthalmologist about grow lights. He told me not to use them, because of the UV radiation. However! I have since learned that the grow lights sold by Mother, Soltech, and Sansi do not emit UV radiation. I dont know about other brands, but generally the first generations of grow lights were harmful, while the newer versions are not harmful at all. That is for home use, though. I can't be sure about the industrial grade grow lights used in nurseries. Hopefully this helps!
What do you mean at 2:49 - are you implying that the photons from an LED are different than those from the sun? and at 6:21 how could an old LED produce more harmful radiation? It's not like it'll get twice as bright and scorch the leaves or anything, right?
In regards to 2:49, I refer to how regular light meters often measure footcandles vs. photons, and that will give you different light readings based on the type of light (e.g., incandescent, LED, sun, bright sun, flouorescent light, etc.). Whereas a PAR meter doesn't discriminate on the light because it reads photons. Yes, they aren't cheap, but oftentimes, I look at these as investments. They last for such a long time, that you end of paying a nominal amount over the years. Would be nice, however, if there are payment plans for folks.
It looks cool and all, but a $10 under-cabinet light from walmart will last just as long and put out the same high-CRI light. There is nothing about this that makes it especially good for plants.
These are insultingly expensive for what they are, 140 euros for a 16w tube light, thats barely any light, sure its in the upper 90s CRI but so are a lot of other brands, these guys are charging 1000% markup for a sleek aluminum housing? at least have a built in timer..

Yeah, getting that dreamy kelvin temp is a holy grail. However, when the whiter lights are under the shelf, it never seems to bother me.

You said the right word of "invest" Floral, and I'm glad you did. Good lights are an investment, but since they have such a long run of a decade or more of use, they turn out to be an affordable investment over time for plants.

They indeed have sleek design but too expensive. If you don't care about the looks and in Europe go for Jungle Down Led Bar (they are mostly designed for terrarium but I have awesome experience with them.)

@@Plantenbaas they are very bright and full spectrum white. It’s almost like a fluorescent light and you can connect multiple at the same time. I hv been very happy with them.

Was wondering if you could educate us on how to select the correct output we would need for a given distance between light and plant. I know that each plant type will have different requirements, but I’m trying to establish some minimum output criteria. Are there any particular brands that you have had good success with? My hope is to install low profile LCD “can” lights in the dark areas but am having trouble finding and information telling me how much output is enough.
Great Video :) although I am curious, as a low budget plant enthusiast (and renter so permanent solutions are not the best) how do you find different LED lights do better for your power bill, like is have you noticed over the years the higher tier bulbs are better? Or as far as your bill goes there is not much between a cheaper/smaller bulb. You just loose on plant growth and replacement costs?

It's a great question. I've never really paid that close attention to the "befores" and "afters" of my electricity bill and since I have so many different kinds of lights, I'm not sure how to weigh in on that. But it's really worth the effort if one could. I suppose you can do some reverse engineering, since many lights share what wattage they use and then you can calculate for how long you have them on and what your energy bill is charging per kilowatt hour, for example. And glad the travels on the channel have taken you to some cool places. Maybe we'll start traveling more again soon!
I'm really getting into house plants and gardening but I don't have the money to buy all the stuff. Infact I'm making some rain catching trash tubs for the gutters because I can even afford to water everything. Tips on low cost gardening especially vegetables for us seniors.
Depending on what route you go, houseplants do become expensive, especially now, but when I started out-that was not the case. So many great scrappy ideas. Plastic bags over plant cuttings as humidity tents, repurposing tea containers as planters, asking friends and families for cuttings, slowly baking used potting medium to resterilize it, using baking soda as a styptic, making your own neem oil wash or horticulutral soap....there's lots of scrappy solutions that can work without spending too much coin.

i got one and i have a couple plants in it that are not doing TO well in it and since the watering is frequent (automatic watering system) and i used a advised potting mix i got a feeling its the light itself
the wall the plants sit on is about 2 meters ( 6ft.) away from a southern window
so ye would adding a light like this work for the plants or is the issue then something i cant see XD

Interesting product. Looks like it's using two different types of LEDs. One side has a blueish almost UV hue to it - but that could be the camera. The spectrum shown is unlike any other Full Spectrum LED that I have seen in the market - e.g. Seoul Semi SunLike or Bridgelux Thrive. I would be curious to see whether it does actually reach 380nm and many don't. Interesting that they don;t mention umol/J - maybe I missed something. That is a perceived problem with Full Spectrum as you'll be hard to find anything above 2umol/j - when a typical Deep Red + White Horti lamp would be closer to 3umol/J. CRI is still used today in the industry but has been replaced with TM-30 - never seen it used or required for horti before. I'm glad you mentioned heat. I watched a Neil deGrasse Tyson podcast about LED lights were he said you can touch an LED bulb - well you can but you'll burn yourself. Many people don't realise that the heat from LEDs comes out the back end. Quite a lot of LED Lighting today is on metal core PCBs rather than FR4 - and i think recently has the same cost. This unit is using a Mid-Power LED - each one being 0.5W. The heat is spread over a 16 inch PCB and uses the housing on the unit as a heatsink. If you have this in a hot kitchen you should be careful. Heat kills LEDs. With this type of product you should have no problems if one of two fail. Being Full Spectrum you wouldn't suddenly have a gap in the spectrum if one failed. I do like the fact this company has said you can rebuy the LED light engine - however i would bet the LED Driver (power supply) will fail before the LEDs do. The Green or Pink hue you mentioned should now be a thing of the past. That was due to the LED binning. Any LEDs that have that today are cheap copies of 10+ year technology. Interestingly Red+Blue LEDs for horti is still a very big thing. However, you need $millions of R&D budget to develop a recipe that will work for the specific crop - adding some UV here, some 435nm there, some 730nm over there, Red+White is the jack of all trades. And gives a high umol/J. The Full Spectrum LEDs were not designed for Horticulture. They were designed for indoor lighting. However, they were very quickly adopted by the horti market and as such are now marketed as horti LEDs. And depending on the CCT can give you more Red or more Blue to your desired likely.

the PAR meter IS pricey. It's from Apogee and it's around $600. I've included its link in the description and will include here: amzn.to/3uqsvN7. Definitely an investment. I would definitely recommend it for folks who do houseplant consultations/interior design for homes with plants, as I've found it integral for that and just understanding light fairly immediately, but definitely is not a cheap product. it's a tank though. I JUST had to replace the battery after 3-4 years of use.

I have seen some apps that say they measure PAR, PPFD and DLI but what they really do is to run the lux/foot candles measured from your phone through an algorithm based on you putting in what kind of lamp you are using. It hasn't worked to well for me yet! :).
Their customer service team is awesome but the custom and duties cost an arm and a leg. The distance guide is also quite iffy, i followed the instruction but burned some plants during past winter still.
In the US, they will pay for the duties but it would have to be for an order of over $200. I don't know if that was your experience or not, or if that is something new they have implemented since that time.

If they aren't cooled properly or don't have that heat sink I was referring to, it can start melting the phosphor layer. When that melts, it can cause tiny bubbles, which can then start reflecting light and have a heating effect that can start damaging leaf chlorophyll. It's not really detectable by our eyes, but you may start seeing damage in your plants.

Can you please do a comment in a future episode about grow lights and human safety as far as cancer and uv rays? I don’t plan on purposely sitting under one like a sunlamp but I have had concerns about placing them on a bookshelf close to the sofa where people regularly sit for long periods of time. It’s unclear what info currently out there is real science and it would be great to see a segment with a scientist and dermatologist maybe an ophthalmologist. It’s one thing to grow things in your basement or a kitchen corner but when it comes to putting them in living rooms and bedrooms what is safe?
Hello! I have extremely sensitive eyes with ultra thin cornea's, and asked my ophthalmologist about grow lights. He told me not to use them, because of the UV radiation.
However! I have since learned that the grow lights sold by Mother, Soltech, and Sansi do not emit UV radiation. I dont know about other brands, but generally the first generations of grow lights were harmful, while the newer versions are not harmful at all. That is for home use, though. I can't be sure about the industrial grade grow lights used in nurseries. Hopefully this helps!

What do you mean at 2:49 - are you implying that the photons from an LED are different than those from the sun? and at 6:21 how could an old LED produce more harmful radiation? It's not like it'll get twice as bright and scorch the leaves or anything, right?
In regards to 2:49, I refer to how regular light meters often measure footcandles vs. photons, and that will give you different light readings based on the type of light (e.g., incandescent, LED, sun, bright sun, flouorescent light, etc.). Whereas a PAR meter doesn't discriminate on the light because it reads photons. It looks cool and all, but a $10 under-cabinet light from walmart will last just as long and put out the same high-CRI light. There is nothing about this that makes it especially good for plants.

These are insultingly expensive for what they are, 140 euros for a 16w tube light, thats barely any light, sure its in the upper 90s CRI but so are a lot of other brands, these guys are charging 1000% markup for a sleek aluminum housing? at least have a built in timer..
