I have been searching for a video that explains grow lights completely in a way that I can understand. You nailed it!! Thank you so much. And I love watching your videos. Keep them coming.
Yeah, I gotta say the part where she asked the producer/manufacture with a vested interest in a product to confirm whether the product was harmful or not was an excellent demonstration of critical thinking, objective reasoning, and thorough research.
I use Sansi 250 watt equivalent "regular" bulbs and have had amazing growth even on high light plants like succulents. That said, you can see the diodes, they're not the typical looking bulb like an incandescent so that's likely why. Ive never had success with making a plant THRIVE with a store bought LED though I have had success with maintaining the plant. In fact I have 7 of the sansi bulbs covering the majority of my plants, then I recently got 3 of their mini clip lights that are actually grow lights much like the halo except much brighter and better quality and I only have two Sansi grow lights and those are for my monsteras and my bird of paradise in a room with no natural light. I have lower watt Sansi bulbs that are better suited to bring the light in your ceiling fixture despite having great light color they simply have too much filter going on for a plant, though I think a plant would love them in a lamp with an already decently lit room just as a way to get a bit extra. In my area in summer it's only dark out for about 5 hours and then it's starting to get bright again but in winter it will be BLACK out by 430pm and barely bright by 8am so plants, humans, pets etc all need lamps in every corner or your barely surviving 😭 for me, it makes sense to use the same lights year round with timers and then come winter the lack of natural light still gives the plants less natural and they really need to use their supplemental lighting. My friend who gets 12 hours of sun daily year round only needs to add lights to spaces that need them as his windows will do the job otherwise.
This was an amazing video! Before this one I had watched 4 others and only 1 got close to explaining PAR, PPF and PPFD. I have saved this video so I can go back and watch it again as I get ready to purchase LED grow lights. Thank you.
A real problem I've encountered is that the cable is too short. I've had to rig up extension cords for most of mine, and discovered that some lights won't work with it. I wish that manufacturers would include a longer cable from the start. The other twizzle is that you find most sellers say it's "full spectrum" and you have to just trust that it is. To be honest I'm surprised that your Soltech manufacturer was allowed to market the light with incorrect information in the first place, showing how easily false information slips through the net, but well done they did something about it quickly. Great video ! 🌿
After spending 17+ years working in marketing and design for companies I can tell you right now it’s not that uncommon for errors to make it through to final packaging.
Thank you so much for the video. I've been trying to figure out the lighting thing for plants 🌵 and this video was a tremendous help. Thank you Drea, btw you look amazing and I love your hair ❤
As to the grow lights hurting your eyes - and this may be because of my particular brain condition (or maybe not?) - I just got some fun led strip lights and boy, I can't even look at them at all without a burning pain in my eyeballs and my brain- it def sets off a feeling like a migraine is gonna come on! I do have lesions in my brain that are in my occipital area - where your vision is interpreted basically- so the bright red and blue of the lights, really hurts my head. I've gotten good at trying to not look directly :) The grow lights I have that glow mostly white bother my eyes less.. Those are the circle style - I'm trying out different styles - see what works best for my plants (mostly aroid, with lots of others thrown in)! Great video - love the way you explain everything!
Just a little add on, for the foot candles foot-candle (fc) is equal to the light produced by one candle at a distance of one foot. It is also defined as equal to one lumen per square foot. And 1 lux is equal to 1 foot candle.
Thank you for spending the time to understand this subject well enough to simplify it for those of us that want to know more about grow lights but don’t need to know everything about them. I loved this video so much. I also really liked that you ran the math, contacted the company about the error and that they made things right 💛
Last summer I had a Bambino fiddle leaf fig in my window, I moved it up onto the sill and within 20 mins it got a burn/tan. It wasn't a lost cause of a leaf I needed to remove or anything but it was red and discolored. The window is North North-West so the direct sun was literally sunset. That was my only instance of a fiddle being a tantrum thrower. Anyway, the reason I'm doing this is BC you should NOT put your grow light up and turn it on esp for a full day over a plant that hasn't acclimated, without checking it every 15-20 mins for the first day or two! Some lights also throw a little bit of heat that your plant also isn't likely used to so that could also cause stress or burns. I have an aloe that's largely neglected BC otherwise I'll kill it with kindness and one day I smelled something funky and it had decided to touch the light bulb and scorch, now I check where it's leaves are at 😬
You are very smart love hearing all the great information I have 2grow lights the only plant I have die on me so far is my pickle plant I looked for it forever it hated me died
When I click on a video expecting to get wisdom I want the person to have more than just this one grow season of experience. There's an epidemic on UA-cam of people with very little experience putting their ideas out there
I’ve done the regular light vs grow light on plant study and there was a noticeable difference on the tropical plant. The regular 5000k was better in most cases unless it was a good grow light brand. Then it was better. I used a 5000k same wattage, same plant, same distance. Lots of the supposed grow lights on Amazon were actually worse. Lots of companies are not accurate, more than I thought. Unless it’s a reputable brand you’re most likely being ripped off in my opinion.
Thanks, have thought about maybe getting a grow-light. I'm a bit surprised at your talking about incandescent bulbs - do you really still have those in the U.S.? Here in Europe production was banned around 10 years ago.
TBH this is the best grow light 🕯️ video I've seen. ❤

So nice of you!💚
Me too, and this one was perfect 🌻
Thanks for all that you do for the plant 🌿🌷💚 community

Wow! This video is excellent! Wonderful explanation of the science of light! You're a great teacher! Thanks for this great video! ❤
You're very welcome!💚
Thank you so much for including my concerns about my eyes! I'll pass this information along to my ophthalmologist. ❤
You’re welcome💚
Drea I love and appreciate this video so much. You answered at least three of the questions I had about grow lights.💡 I really appreciate that 🙏💡🙏

Glad it was helpful! I ran into the same issue when I first got into plants so I wanted to make the video that I wish existed back then💚

Thank you so much Drea! I just hung my Soltech light and I love it. I am looking forward to seeing how it does with my plants.
Wonderful!💚

@@AlohaPlantLife working the algorithm on me lol maybe you should make a video about being a famous UA-camr instead of a gardener lol
Have you tried the Rousseau grow lights and if so any details on them, thanks
No, I have not tried those

What about a full spectrum LED light that isn’t labeled as a grow light, but is labeled as full spectrum at 6500k to be exact?
It really sucks that you dont have a more affordable suggestion.
Thanks, have thought about maybe getting a grow-light. I'm a bit surprised at your talking about incandescent bulbs - do you really still have those in the U.S.? Here in Europe production was banned around 10 years ago.
They’ve mostly been replaced with LED but they’re still produced, yes
