  • From the 1977 PBS Special called "Fiddlers Three". It featured three great fiddlers (violinists) with different styles. Jean Luc Ponty (fusion jazz), Itzhak Perlman (classical), and Doug Kershaw (cajun). At the end, they all joined in for one final song. Just recently unearthed this baby from a pile of stuff and will upload all the songs in time.

The most remarkable thing about this performance to me as a fiddle player of 20 years is how at the end when Doug kicks off into Devils' Dream, Ihtzak Perlman just goes AFTER it. Ponty just sort of hangs back and does his thing, but Ihtzak, the odd man out, the classical genius, engages with the rhythm section goes right for the throat, hammering away. It's just fantastic.

I have been trying to get a recording of this for years. I had the entire performance audiotaped but left the tape in my car after it was totaled in an accident in 2000. I never recovered the tape and thought I would never hear this again. What a revelation. Long live UA-cam!

Marc O'Connor would have been much more appropriate as the third fiddler than this nutjob Kershaw, but maybe he wasn't well know in 1977. as it is, this is two great fiddlers and a wig and sideburns. i remember watching this; Kershaw broke all the hair on about 5-6 bows during his number.

Mark O'Conner was in the same class as my son's babysitter at Mountlake Terrace High School, north of Seattle, so he would have been 18 in 1976, and probably still a senior. Kershaw was (is?) a wild man, and fun to watch, even if moody (thanks, Bobby).
