Crankshaft RunOut on Milwaukee Eight Engine - Feuling Measuring Tool

  • Properly measuring your Crankshaft/Flywheel will determine the assembly, and quality of your motor. Some motors come off the assembly line with a perfect score of 0.002 or less, and some are destined to fail as soon as the tires meet the road.
    Gear drives are nice, but Harley Davidson designed their motor with a chain drive for a reason. This is why their tolerance/service level is set at 0.012. This is not ideal, but chain drives do allow for more flex, and less ware on the cam/crank bearings. Also, another thing to take into consideration, your stock crankshaft runout can increase overtime.
    You will see a lot of videos of people showcasing their amazing runouts of 0.003 or less, but seldomly will you witness anything more. When Installing an S&S or Feuling CAMCHEST kit, Max Runout and Play is 0.005. Anything more, and they will not warranty your build, and rightfully so.
    Anything more than 0.006 runout and 0.001 of flex/play, you have to consider getting your motor serviced. The moment someone finds this out, and their warranty is expired, motivation is out the window. No one will show you that haha.

    Nice video, im not sure id leave it at the edge of spect. For my bike i plan to keep i think i would get an S&S welded crank and timken bearings so that i know the engine wont beat itself apart in another 10,000 miles.

      These are fueling specs. They would not want to be liable for any Harley Parts failing early. Harley specs are a lot higher.

    Just imagine spending $50000 on a CVO and not getting a dialed in blueprinted engine..UGH

      That’s no good! That would definitely be going back to Harley under warranty 👍🏽

    How much tolerance is ideal for an S&S geardrive?

    • @RAIDERWORLD
      @RAIDERWORLD  2 місяці тому

      I would say 3 or less, but I would double check their limit

    So with that much run out what do you do to be able to do gears instead of chain? Just got my harley and am trying to learn about them and upgrades

      I’m most cases, you would have to change out the entire crank. This is a lot more involved, and I would highly suggest a certified professional.

      I'm in the camp with you. I fear if it's out of spec for a gear driven cam will that lead to other component failures in a year or two such as the oil pump ect? I can save a butt load of money doing all the work myself but as I add up the parts costs for a cam chest assembly, a welded crank/flywheel/rod assembly with timken bearings.... I might be money ahead to just order a complete S&S engine and do a motor swap that will have all the right stuff installed in it already? I need to crunch numbers but....

    So much 'bad' information out there regarding this process. Glad you presented the fact-of-the-matter in your usual, straight approach, no BS way.

    My bike was 5 thousand with only 1800 miles on it. My other bike was 5 thousands w 5k miles on it. I guess they come like that from the factory.

      Yeah, this is a common runout. Only a few out there with a perfect score.
