Harley has lock feature in the sidestand that when there's weight on it, it doesn't fold up.

@@kristophertrout7328 ...a good job because on any other bike it would have toppled over as Freddie quite clearly hadn't locked it back into position. Easy mistake to make but I was waiting for expensive crunching noises as it toppled off the side stand but the "lock" feature you mentioned came to the rescue...on any other bike it would have been a disaster! 😲😲😲

The days of going to work on a motorbike in the middle of winter, getting into a million layers, and the cold and water still getting through it, hands so cold that they hurt when the feeling returned, remember it well and don't miss it.
Still ride in the winter but these days my bike has heated grips and seat and an alternator and battery that can handle it and the lights and heated gear, which is a game changer, plus biking gear has improved beyond recognition in the last 40 years.

For everyone concerned about the side stand, Harleys have a patented design for a somewhat “locking” side stand design called the jiffy stand. The side stand won’t move backwards when the motorcycle is on it, as such you can actually park on a slight downslope. It looks angled farther back because they place it farther towards the front wheel to balance the weight better, and hence it is angled farther back so it is easier to reach from the seat, especially for riders with shorter legs.

Yes. Used properly, a Harley will never roll off its sidestand. I think it's the best one in the business. Ask me about the time an FJR at the gas pumps rolled forward off its side stand and crashed into my Ducati Multistada. 🤬

Love the story about riding to the B&Q job, Freddie… you earned your winter stripes by the sounds of it, something that many riders don’t, their first biking experiences involving a big, shiny new bike on HP with a full set of cold weather gear stuck on the bill.
It reminded me of when i was in my early twenties in the 90s, when I, like, you, couldn’t afford proper winter gear and just rode in what i could pick up cheaply off Loot. I had a girlfriend in Lincolnshire at the time, and I did the ride from Manchester way every weekend… freezing cold over the Pennines in winter, literally frozen to the little VT250 i had back then. My trick was a pair of boots about 3 sizes too big, with layers of socks, tin foil and newspaper to try to keep my feet warm…. Character -building stuff which makes you a PROPER biker.
I recall getting my fist bike with heated grips, 10 years later, at a time when i was bit more flush and had managed to get a full set of Hein Gericke winter gear on the drip… it was sheer luxury, and I wondered how I ever manged back in my 20s, other than the fact we were young, broke and foolish.
    Keep up the good work.

I water proof my very very heavy Harley leather jacket with coconut oil and boot polish.
In Winter in Western Australia, one of my outfits is is a eider down puffer jacket under a Brando style leathet jacket. We do get frost and wind chill in heavy rain.
Bikers look like Michelin Man in winter.
I just sold my 1900 Roadliner, and the big cruisers will mile munch. My 1200 Thruxton has a mile munching motor, cos I changed the gearing so that Im doing 80mph at 4000.

I remember passing my motorcycle test on a freezing cold February day in 1977 in Leighton Buzzard. I can still see the examiner huddled in his sheepskin coat watching me ride around. To this day I’m convinced I only passed because he didn’t want frostbite. I was wearing jeans, Belstaff jacket and open face helmet. I was only 17, though, and didn’t feel the cold.

Very nice bike, but you can have comfort and feel good at the end of a long ride at a much lower cost. I rode back home from the last ABR the weather, wasn't that good, cold & rain to Cumbria. On my 2016 Triumph Trophy SE, heated seats, grips, electricity adjusted screen, and bluetooth radio connection to my intercom. I passed other riders struggling in the conditions. When i got home, i had a cuppa and cut the grass. Even riding around the Highlands in crap is no chore. All for 9k. Have a good visit to the bike show. We need all the support with dealers going bust, especially HD. 👍

Great vid. Lucky boy, what a treat HD laid on for you.
That side stand scared me, even with the special locking function they have. Regarding your waterproofs, if you havent already binned them, try some NikWax Tech Wash to re-proof them before binning. You can buy it from any decent outdoors shop. Worth a try and will be cheaper than a new set if it works on that material.
I went to the NEC Bike show in 2024 (first time in about 5 years), and decided to grab something to eat on the complex while the traffic died down after the show. Worked well and had a nice straight run home by the time I had finished.

I rode Vietnam north to south on moped back in the 90's. Really pleased I survived the experience just barely. Spent a lot of time wearing swimming goggles under my cowboy hat due to beating sun and unexpected torrential rain. Which I recall, would hit the hot tarmak and instantly evaporate into steam. The bikes would then cut thru the steam like knives in butter leaving trails, was very vivid. A lot of time spent on dirt roads in dusty dark conditions too, and a few experiences left me with some light-hearted ptsd. Really a very different world over there, I hear Lao is the place to go now. And if you find yourself around there, don't miss out on Angkor Wat.

As an older rider, I have done enough painful winter riding in the past and now I wear Gerbing heated jacket and trousers underneath a laminated gortex textile suit. In lower temperatures I also wear a puffa jacket and leggings between the heated suit and the textiles. This conserves power from the bike. Finally for winter riding, heated grips are essential kit imho. I haven't tried heated gloves, I prefer grips powered from the bike.

I used to ride over the hills to Barrow in Furness in the winter and fell off once when I pulled into a petrol station and my legs failed to go down fast enough haha. What a comfy looking bike!!! Wouldn’t have been so eager to do that journey on my Ducati Scrambler….. As for your waterproof Freddie, have you tried washing it with Granger’s tech wash and reproofer? Use it in the washing machine instead of normal detergent and then tumble dry on low heat and it restores your waterproofing. Over time the fabric gets dirty and water no longer beads on the surface, which allows it to ‘wet out’ which forms a barrier and the heat and water vapour inside can’t escape out, Then you get ‘boil in the bag’ syndrome. So it’s possible you got wet due to sweat/water vapour inside the waterproofs not being able to evaporate as it normally would, rather than your jacket having let water in from outside. It’s also possible your kit is just too old and now knackered but I’ve got 10 year old waterproofs that I tech wash/reproof and they’re still going strong. Might be worth a try, or just treat yourself to new ones! Can recommend Scott ones in that case. Safe travels, Ben.

Nikwax do a large range of waterproofing compounds you either spray on or add to the washing machine. I've kept my waterproofs alive for years using their stuff. (No connection to me by the way)
Also you should look at Zerofit baselayer tops (amongst other gear they do). Never known anything like them. SO warm. (again, no affiliation to me).
    Keep up the good work.
    Chris from Hastings.
p.s Do pop to Hastings if you're down this way again, you'd love the old town.
