Benavidez vs Gavril FULL FIGHT: Sept. 8, 2017 - PBC on Showtime

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- At 20 years, 9 months old, David Benavidez became boxing’s youngest world champion - and the youngest ever in the super middleweight division - with a split decision victory over Ronald Gavril on Friday night on an exciting night of 168-pound action on SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Benavidez (19-0, 17 KOs) placed the previously vacated WBC Super Middleweight belt around his waist after winning the title against former European amateur standout Gavril (18-2, 14 KOs) in what Benavidez later described as quite possibly the “Fight of the Year.” One scorecard had Gavril winning 116-111, with Benavidez winning on the other two scorecards, 116-111 and 117-111 in the event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.
“It feels amazing to win this title,” said the Phoenix resident Benavidez. “It’s everything I’ve dreamed about since I was a little kid. It’s everything I’ve dedicated myself to and I’ve worked hard for. It finally paid off.”
The 31-year-old Romanian Gavril, who trains at Mayweather’s Gym in Las Vegas by Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, sent Benavidez to the canvas with a left hook with just 50 seconds left in the wild 12th and final round.
“I feel I won the fight. I dominated the pace. I can’t say anything else other than it was up to the judges,” Gavril said, who was watched by his promoter all-time great Floyd Mayweather from ringside. “The only thing I can do is to ask for a rematch.”
Benavidez, who turned pro at age 16 and only had 15 amateur fights, took control of the fight early on, but Gavril seemed to gain steam mid-fight, out-boxing and being more active than Benavidez in the seventh, eighth and ninth rounds. In rounds 11 and 12, Benavidez out-landed Gavril 66-35 overall and 53-14 with power punches.
“I felt my performance was good except for the last round when I got too anxious and wanted to knock him out,” Benavidez said. “I let my young side takeover and I wanted to give the fans a great fight. I didn't really feel hurt but it was a shock knockdown. I know to be careful and more cautious. It was a learning experience.”

Rony corner sucked big time. Only thing they said is "he tired" through out the whole fight.
😆😅🤣
& he actually looked more exhausted than Benavidez in each round. Breathing HARD
Benavidez was wide open for uppercut and Ronald never did it several times corner never mention an uppercut
Rony trainer told him to throw them over hand right and over hand left. Rony didn’t listen. I don’t think he understood English. Banavidez was open for them over right every time he threw his jab. His trainer also told him to roll inside Banavidez punches but Rony kept going to high guard. If he had move his head a little bit instead of catching them punches in the high guard this fight would had been a little easier for him
No it's reverse psychology trying to usher him to push himself because they see that HE was tired.
Benavidez got careless in the later rounds. Looking for the knockout. Gavril was fading fast but still had enough power to knock Benavidez down. Benavidez is a bad dude.
KuttyJoe careless whisper
Yes out of his real weight class getting al the advantage!
Yes he is but I can't see him beating the Charlo.
@@bobohannon7091 He cooks that nobody
The trainer was loud and annoying, but in the last round calling for the over hand rights and calling for the left hook that literally connected seconds after is the reason why fighters need to trust their corners.
exactly what i said. fighters listen to their corner, and look what happens.
Why was there audio from the corners for the entire fight? You could barely hear the commentators!
Benavidez is 200x better now.
How ? I see the same style maybe hits harder bc he’s in a more prime age.

Man I like both of these fighters can’t wait until tomorrow with Dirrell
Benavidez reminds me of ggg in a sense that he only comes forward no lateral movement or footwork
he depends on his reach and distance for his defense.

GGG's got better feet than Benevidez. Has he improved since this fight?
@@chrisrussell5690 lol. Both these fighters have a good jab and walk straight in behind it.

Power punches: Benavidez 157 to Gavril 73. Jabs: Gavril 89 to Benavidez 65. Total: Benavidez 222 to Gavril 162. That judge that had it 116 for Gavril got a little bonus from money man floyd. Dave moretti always has it right. 117 Benavidez.

@@malamute4793 I'm your daddy.
This was a close fight despite lack of power punching rom Gavril. Had Gavril been more aggressive in the first half of the fight, Gavril may have won. I scored it 114-113 for Benavidez, but most of his success came in the first half of the fight. Here’s how I scored it:
Round 1: 10/9 Benavidez
Round 2: 10/9 Benavidez (20-18)
Round 3: 10/9 Benavidez (30-27)
Round 4: 10/9 Benavidez (40-36)
Round 5: 10/9 Benavidez (50-45)
Round 6: 9/10 Gavril (59-55)
Round 7: 10/9 Benavidez (69-64)
Round 8: 9/10 Gavril (78-74)
Round 9: 9/10 Gavril (87-84)
Round 10: 9/10 Gavril (96-94)
Round 11: 10/9 Benavidez (106-103)

@@lakernation2704 .......A boxer has to have stamina, eat right and stay in top shape. It's a tough sport. Stamina is especially important. I can't picture Benavidez being in the sport pass 5 more years. You gotta practically run at least a couple of miles every other day. The life span at the top of the sport in boxing has a limited shelf life. Benavidez is 24 years old. Benavidez needs to start fightin some real competition. It's hard to tell how good he is.: Anthony Dirrell is 36 years old and J leon Love is, 33 years old and I agree they're both good fighters, but gate keepers nonetheless. Those cats are on the down side of their careers, I applaud them both for still being around and not retired. They're both better than average fighters and still just good enough to get a fight and be on TV. Being 10 - 12 years younger, Benavidez did what he was expected to do.... Win!
@@donniematonnie9378 I'm not buying what you just said. Benavides has always been a fat kid. He dedicated himself to boxing an has proved everybody wrong including yourself. If you get beat by a younger fighter then you didn't use your ring leadership or experience. Age is just a number. And benavides does have alot of stamina. I've seen his fights an never seems tired. Another good fighter was Girvil a tough as nails fighter which benavides smoked in 2 fights. How can jleon love an Dirrel be past their prime if they haven't been thru boxing wars it's like benavides said he wanted it more than them.
@@lakernation2704 .......right now @ this moment none of the top fighters seem to be fighting each other. From what I hear, I believe that's getting ready to change as I write this post. On a previous comment; only time will tell when it comes to stamina, just remember I said it here first. I give Benavidez 5 or 6 years at best. He'll be done by the time he's 31. He’s extremely unimpressive. Slow and flat footed. Loses to Canelo and Charlo. He’s struggling to make super middleweight so will have to move up. Definitely loses against Bivol and Beterbiev. He might snag a belt if he’s lucky but will never be an ATG.

Those scorecards were too damn wide. Neither one of these guys won more than seven rounds. I scored six rounds for Benavidez, five rounds for Gavril, and the twelfth round a draw; 9-9. I ultimately had it 114-113 for Benavidez. I don't know what fight the judges were watching but that fight was way closer than those scorecards indicated.
Hell yea lackluster performance from benavidez, he poured it on late tho and in the process got knocked down. Seemed weight drained and gavril fights solid kinda like ggg style

This man, Benavides, quoted, " that man is a tough fighter, I take my hat off to him," but yet not once did he attempt to take off, possibly the biggest hat in universe and its just sitting on his head as the words roll right out of his mouth. Look at Gavrill's face at the end of the fight...its all beat up. Look at David's...be looks the same.
@@dcrcort they are not talking about who won. The deal here is Benavidez being a fight dog with no defense, no problem with that, but that chin doesn’t look strong enough for Canelo
Turns out saying he's tired a bunch of times, doesn't actually make him tired.
I think Benavides can benefit from having a wider stance and more head movement. That being said i still don’t think he can beat Canelo at 168, Canelos Jab is quicker and stronger and his defense won’t allow Benavidez to go off. I’d personally love to see Plant vs Benavides they always talk shit about each other and both said they want it.
I think the same he's gotta realise that Canelo is a bigger Puncher & a class above almost everyone else Canelo walks down most Opponents too so that Fight would be a War, there's something in my head screaming avoid Canelo has been since it was 1st mentioned I love DB. when he got knocked down(off Balance?)it pissed me right off! ✌️

Gavril got beat senseless
@@Vjl5280 No, he didn’t. If you honestly think that then you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.
I had it exactly the same, 6 rounds each with Gavril edging it with the extra point from the KD. I think however, that those cards are less ridiculous than you say. A lot of the rounds were close and judges rarely give even rounds. 116 is 8 rounds which sounds like a lot but it really isn't. The next closest thing (not allowing even rounds) is 7-5 or 115-113. Any fight where a guy gets 4 rounds is competitive.

This wasn't the Benavidez that I'm used to seeing. I'm not a fan of his but his previous fights had me convinced that he might be ready for Canelo Alvarez. But then again...
17:13 That was Gavril's opening and he didn't catch him - was waiting on left downstairs, upstairs with the right. Benevides has cannons on both shoulders and when he is the aggressor he is a monster, but there were still a few holes at 20. On many occasions he leans forward/tilts on his left foot -hand goes with it - maybe a rhythm thing? At times he looked flustered under fire and went chin up/hands down a couple times. Still had a little of that heavy bag mentality too; action without much thought to reaction. - Here I come...1-1-2-3. ready or not! Not that he telegraphs but it's like the QB who knows who he is throwing to before the snap regardless of coverage. Faith in the tools and those were so awesome tools even at 20. DB def won this fight though Gavril was game. DB is a rare and special talent, yet at this point in 2017, still a little raw.. Will get some hate here but think Plant has a good shot at winning. Would not be surprised if either guy won but the fact everyone was afraid to fight DAvid may be what end up costing him. David has fought some very good fighters but no one at the top of their game save for maybe Gavril. All respect to Gavril, but would not refer to him as a world-class fighter. A very good fighter but not world-class. Anthony Direll was on the downslide as was Lemuiex. The guys David got fought him because losing at that point may have cost some teeth and scar tissue but in reality, was more of an opportunity for them than David. Plant's fight experience versus Canelo, even in defeat, may be the difference. Very excited to see the fight. Love DB and am rooting for him. Plant will need smart movement in order to control and dictate the pace/distance while keeping David off-balance and in chase mode. If David can stalk and work the angles by staying under control (like GGG, Canelo) instead of chasing (as I have seen him do even in more recent fights), it will be a VERY short night for Caleb. Not with all this being said could be tooootttaallllyyyy wrong and DB wins by outboxing Plant! THat's why I love this game...sweet science indeed
Thanks for parsing through all this, lot of info here! The only thing stopping me from betting Caleb is his gas tank. People are talking about Caleb's improvements, and how he boxes better, but unless he intends to KO David he's also going to have to have somehow improved his stamina, I feel like. They're selling this fight for $75, perhaps partly on the basis of it being a "50/50 fight"..I'm wondering if it's not an attempt to prop Caleb up as a worthy opponent for MM
@@bdaypartymyplace Benevidez squares up & crosses his feet too much. I'm surprised he hasn't been put down more often....but that's probably because his power makes his opponents too leery to attack him.
He has pretty good reflexes because he's young, but he needs to keep improving for a long career.
But Benevidez showed considerable improvement was much better last time out against Plant.
Benevidez should fight the inexperienced David Morrell, who has been talking up a fight with Benevidez...

Benavidez clearly beat on my manz for 12 rounds. Gavril had moments. Trouble for him was he didn't have enough punching power to keep Benavidez honest and his head movement was not on a high enough level to eat the amount of punches he ate from Benavidez. Benavidez punches too hard to take as much damage as Gavril did. Even with the surprise, flash knockdown in round 12, Benavidez was clearly way ahead on the cards. Great fight, though.
