Benavidez vs Ellis FULL FIGHT: March 13, 2021 - PBC on Showtime

- Former two-time world champion David Benavidez kept his perfect ring record intact with an 11th-round technical knockout victory against veteran Ronald Ellis in their WBC Super Middleweight Title Eliminator main event on Saturday night’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast, live on SHOWTIME from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
Phoenix’s Benavidez (24-0, 21 KOs) flashed brilliant hand speed, accuracy and power as he dominated Ellis (18-2-2, 12 KOs) of Lynn, Mass., over 11 rounds before referee Johnny Callas finally waved off the fight at 2:03 of the penultimate round. The 24-year-old star held a significant lead on all three scorecards (99-91, 98-92 x2) at the time of the stoppage.
“I rate my performance pretty good but I know I could have done better,” said Benavidez, who extended his perfect record to 24-0. “Ronald Ellis is a tough competitor. I just hope the fans like what they saw. I threw a lot of combinations, punches in bunches. There were a lot of times I thought Ellis was going to quit but he didn’t. Hats off to him, he’s a tough guy. It was a little later than I wanted but a stoppage is still a stoppage. I hope the fans got a good show tonight.”
A boxing prodigy turned youngest super middleweight world champion in boxing history, Benavidez turned in a masterful performance as evidenced by his punch stats, landing 289 of 532 power punches thrown for an eye-popping connection rate of 54%. Benavidez connected on 50 punches in the 11th round which ultimately led to the stoppage. Both fighters combined to throw 1,403 punches. Following his dominating win on SHOWTIME, Benavidez is one step closer to reclaiming a super middleweight world title.
“I want all the big guys,” Benavidez added. “Speaking for the fans too, they would love to see me against all the big guys because as you can see, I love throwing punches. I love stopping people so me versus any big name would be an amazing fight. I want [Jermall] Charlo, Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant, all of them.”
Ellis, 31, showed tremendous determination and a very sturdy chin as he absorbed the constant onslaught from the former two-time world champion. Often working off the ropes as Benavidez pressed the action, Ellis landed 89 of his 334 jabs.
“I could have popped the jab and controlled things a little bit more and not let him smother me,” said Ellis. “Hell yeah I wanted to finish. I didn’t want to give him that satisfaction. I could have moved a little bit more and not taken so many shots to the head. Hats off to him. He did what he had to do. He never hurt me, that’s the funny thing. I took a lot of shots but he didn’t damage me or have me super hurt. I never thought about quitting.”
The sports world lost an icon today as the death of Marvelous Marvin Hagler was reported hours before the live telecast began. A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Hagler, who was 66 years old, fought in the first main event ever on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on March 10, 1986. Hagler was honored with a ceremonial 10-count prior to tonight’s main event.
Benavidez reflected on Hagler’s passing after the fight: “I had met Marvin once before and he was a great champion. Someone told me he fought the first fight on SHOWTIME. Someone on my team let me know a few hours before the fight that he had passed. It’s sad and he will be missed. He was a true legend.”

Huge respect for Ellis. One tough kid.
Ellis is a warrior. Tough, durable. Kept fighting until the stoppage.
Muy buena pelea, los los dos aguantan y dan
Yea he has a old warrior spirit
He a punk got fuxked up
I was very impressed. Never seen him fight before but he came with it
He got dogged the whole fight
That was the most brutal display of determination in a pressure fighter that I have ever seen. It’s like a highly skilled and athletic Margarito with a much better defense, hand speed, punch selection and footwork. Also a better jab and boxing iq. Just better overall but the pressure is there and it is unreal.
@@ricobond plant is basically a dead man. fools still don't appreciate how special he is.
@Rico Bond why does he “hate” plant? It’s not just selling the fight? That’s typically what it is. Unless there’s some real issues or drama. I don’t care about that. I just like watching Benavidez as he’s a fun fighter. At 168 (if he can make weight) I think he’s the number one contender. I can’t wait to see him plant Plant. I just want a fun competitive fight.
Absolutely, he is a better improved version of Margarito.
Wonder if that style could beat like a defensive genius like Floyd.....it'd be interesting to see what style can beat a defensive style.....
I don't see it. Margarito was good at cutting off the ring. He was relentless, always staying close, he didn't stay outside like Benavidez does. He moved efficiently, only needing to walk to keep up with anyone. Margarito threw way more punches than Benavidez does, nearly all of them power punches and thrown heavy. Margarito fought with the techniques of a mexican fighter, he stood squared up, used way more head movement than Benavidez does or seemingly can. Margarito would fight bent over, low, chin down. Margarito showed way less respect for opponent's punches than Benavidez does. Margarito had better footwork in moving and punching and could throw power punches with both hands from either stance on the inside.
Benavidez didn't show a high volume pressuring style against the few higher level opponents he fought. He stayed on the outside against Plant, Andrade and Gvozdyk, throwing lots of jabs, throwing at a very low volume, loading up on single power punches. The weaknesses in his footwork were revealed in those fights.
Similarity I see between the two is the size and potentially punch resistance. I'll wait until Benavidez actually fights a high level puncher though before I jump to conclusions. Benavidez fights tall and long, with little headmovement, poorly balanced footwork, focusing on avoiding punches over landing them but with impressive coordination on his punches and combinations, or he loads up on single power punches against good opponents, luckily neither of them were big, powerful, had stamina or resistance like he does. Margarito fights squared up, head down, in close, always moving forward and cutting off the ring, swinging about 100 looping, heavy power punches per round, with very little respect for an opponent's punches, constantly using lots of headmovement. That's not the same style.
Major respect for Ronald Ellis 🔥
Props to Ellis, no shame for that stoppage. That's the TOUGHNESS every boxers should possess. Ellis is a well equiped boxer after all.
Benavidez was overwhelmingly offensive for Ellis while Ellis was overwhelmingly tough for Benavidez. Nice and clean fight. Hats off for the both of them.

Ellis is a tough mofo.
That is stupidity not heart or being tough on Ellis's part.
@@christopherfreeman1340 this is a stupid comment how is it stupid to be tough in a fight WTF
Nah, you can’t just attribute it to stupidity. Gotta give him credit for having heart and being tough too. A stupid person alone would’ve been KOed much earlier. Takes more than just what you call “stupidity” to hang in there like Ellis did.

Big respect to Ellis. All Heart, skills and more of a fighter than a lot of so called champs that will not fight Benavidez. Not a money thing with him.all about fighting the best. legend mentality.
His trainers sucks they need to be 🔥
Instead of telling Ellis to be more latteral and go under more punches while throwing combinations to the body, all his is corner was able to tell him was generic stuff like "Use the jab", "stay off the ropes" and "You can't take those kind of punches." They never addressed the fact that Ellis was being hella linear at times and staying in Benavides's long range. He was trying to counter a huge man's jab with a jab to the face instead of going under it at an angle and punching to the body. Ellis is very tough but was not helped by his corners' lack of game plan and their inability to make effective adjustments.
Man that shit so common across boxing and MMA I'm surprised when I hear some good corner advice. I'm waiting on one of these fighters to say something about it. Like, duh mf but what should I do to adjust.

@@avtobus1234 stepping left and right instead of back and forth. It helps against a puncher cause if you go back and forth the puncher can just follow you in a straight line with straights and uppercuts… if you move side to side the puncher will have have to work more to cut off the ring to land punches

David Benavidez is a BAAAAAD MAN 🔥🥊. Nobody wants to call him out. Boxing is a business nowadays. This man here making all the top names look shook.
Benavidez should fight Plant then.. They have been calling each other out for years already.

Ellis' jab wasn't terrible AT ALL. Bene just knows what it takes to get a stoppage. Those flurry's are fast. Not that hard but impressive nonetheless b'cuz Ellis was taking them well.
Ellis has too much heart for his own good. What a warrior!
I don't see Benavidez getting away with pulling straight back and getting hit so much against Canelo. I could be wrong, but I think Canelo capitalizes on that and will ko him.
I think the handspeed, reach, and stamina will be a big problem for Canelo. I do think Canelo has more power but this is the fight we want!

You can’t play defense with a heavy handed fighter who’s faster than you. Congrats David
Doubt it, he’d gas faster and David would take over
No way, Benavidez was taking Ellis’s shots like nothing. Ellis didn’t have the power to hurt Benavidez..
@@danielacuna573 he’s used to that. He’s been taking shots from GGG Pavlik Quillin etc. since he was 15. Canelos smaller mind you and David’s big and comes forward. He’s like a bigger GGG but with hand speed
It would have been different if he delivered his offense and moved, if hit and circled and made David follow him all night maybe he would get tired. But to stand there and trade with him like their skill set and power are equal is a very poor game plan.
@@aztecheart8426 Benavidez don’t have that GGG power… This fight showed that benavidez is solid when going forward but not good when going backwards. Thing is that canelo can do both which makes him really that good. He will made david back up because I don’t think that power is anything special it’s more like the volume that he produces.
Hay que sacarse el sombrero con Ellis!!

But brother tried his best, he just got broken down round by round. Wish Benavidez was a heavy weight so he can take fury out. Wanna see Canelo and Benavidez.
They won’t let Benavidez murder Canelo like that. I personally think from this performance, I have to be honest. I can see Charlo and Andrade taking Benavidez to Rd 12, but Benavidez is no joke. This man is powerful. If Benavidez and Fury go to Cruiserweight, thats a fight like Fury vs Cunningham and I had Cunningham winning that one.

David is the most exiting fighter I have ever watched
Sooo...I've been watching these fights and I gotta say...I don't think Plant is all that much better than Kyrone Davis or Ronald Ellis. He's a little sharper, but not as durable. Plant rarely gets hit clean, yet he was hurt late against Jose U and stopped by basically one punch against Canelo. He was on his way to a 7-5 type decision against faded Dirrell when he put his lights out. He's not going to be able to withstand David, who throws almost twice as many punches as Canelo.
Well said. He can't take a fraction of what poor Ellis took here

Benavidez vs Lemiuex is going down and Plant vs Dirrell just got made, too. The word is, those two fights will all be said and done by the end of the summer, so those two can fight and create someone for Canelo after he has completed his 2 fights deal with Bivol and GGG. No idea where Andrade and Charlo fit in. Charlo was just trying to fight Munguia and Andrade's middleweight mandatory is going to follow him up to 168, so he'll have to likely deal with either him or John Ryder --- who probably isn't going to want to fight anyone with the position he's in now, because Canelo said he wanted another big fight in the UK and Ryder probably figured he'll check that box pretty well after his "win" over Jacobs.
