    Not fun fact about this movies story:
    Antonio Banderas had a heart attack 6 years ago, and a sequel almost never happened because of it.
    It feels more emotional and personal because it is.

  • @thebanditking3084
    @thebanditking3084 Місяць тому +166

    I personally don't think Death is a villain in this story, he was quite literally doing, well, his job. Puss had been always mocking and challenging Death without knowing it, and being his last life, it was time for Death to go after him, his time is just getting closer. Death never intended to "kill him", i actually think he just wanted Puss to be aware of what was going to happen if he didn't live his last life correctly!

    • @TheDragonsRose
      @TheDragonsRose Місяць тому +29

      Death is often viewed as evil because their purpose is to take souls. But Death is just a natural part of life, and some people accept it with open arms, or fight until the very end. Puss had 9 lives, wasted them all, and still had the gall to exude arrogance in the face of his inevitable demise. And this movie was an excellent display of character growth for Puss.

    • @VelociraptorsOfSkyrim
      @VelociraptorsOfSkyrim Місяць тому

      Here's the thing, Death is very much, of his own admission, _NOT_ doing his job here.
      Death is cheating, killing someone before their time, because he feels personally slighted.
      Death very much did intend to kill Puss, when he found out Puss changed, he wasn't happy or glad, he was _pissed off._
      He says "WHY THE HELL DID I HAVE HAVE TO PLAY WITH MY FOOD!?!" When Puss stood up to him then says "You're ruining this for me!"
      Those are the words of someone who just had their fun ruined, not someone teaching someone a lesson.

    • @SprayInk-Kreatïv-Nouveau
      @SprayInk-Kreatïv-Nouveau Місяць тому +15

      I have already had this conversation with many people I refuse to argue so I beg you to agree.
      He wasn't really doing his job, unless his job was to forcibly kill others before their time, get it?
      He was, literally in his own words, angry with him and he knew that this was cheating, and even then, he still decided to chase him down. BUT. Here comes the part where I agree with you.
      Although Death was really acting as an antagonist and going beyond the limits of his job to kill the protagonist, how else could Death be represented? It would be very ironic if death is cool and understandable, if your job is to kill you have to have a certain level of not-caring boredom and a chaotic god-complex.
      So even though Death really wasn't being fair and was deliberately trying to kill by force, could be explained by the fact that he felt anger that he died several times for stupid reasons, emphasis on the phrase "laughing at death", Death wanted to give him a lesson, even if that meant breaking the rules, something had to be done or he would do everything wrong again, wasting lives.
      So Death could be a Chaotic Neutral Antagonist, He has a role in "society" that has to be done to maintain control and balance of everything, but he would go so far as to break the rules for a little fun or to teach a lesson.
      Something like, being a lawfully correct bartender but still allow yourself to be bribed by a criminal group to see the police struggle a little more and have fun or to simply earn more money, you know, like real lif-

    Fun fact: If you watch the bar fight scene closely, you can see that the camera is almost always tilted to a degree when Death is shown. There is one shot where the ground is almost diagonally to the frame. I saw a video from a creator called No The Robot, someone with experience in the animation industry and he speaks explains that it adds to the feeling of „off-ness“ you encounter when you see the Wolf for the first time, that sense that there’s more to him than simply being a bounty hunter. As No The Robot says, there is nothing by accident in animation, every detail is put in intentionally.
    Edit: At 6:28, when Death catches Puss‘ blades and the camera turns back to Puss, you can see it literally tilting back to a normal angle. You don’t really notice until you are aware, but our brains do, subconsciously.
    Also, having the sequel after such a long time gives me a little bit of hope that maybe, one day, Warner Bros and Zach Snyder will give the Owls of Ga‘Hoole another try, because I freaking love that movie so much.

    That title is hard to believe considering everyone who saw this movie couldn't stop talking about it for over a year XD
    But the love and praise is VERYYY well deserved!! This is still my absolute favorite Dreamworks movie, everything about it is so perfect and well crafted together!! The level of detail, work, care, and love absolutely pours from this film, this truly is a diamond in the animation industry!
    If I'm being totally honest, as well, Puss is probably my favorite protagonist in Dreamworks too, as well as Death being my favorite antagonist! Both of them are just SOOO well written and portrayed!
    Puss feels like such a realistic character who really has to go through change and accepting his life can't stay the same anymore, and he has to swallow his pride and learn how to be vulnerable about his troubles to earn back the love of people he's lost in his life, as well as embrace the fear he feels in order to earn Death's respect and all that.
    I'm a sucker for stories where characters find reasons to live and value their life, it's SOOO good!! Not to mention the found family aspects with Puss finally finding the support he needs in Kitty and Perrito (He has a THERAPY dog now, that touches my heart 😭).
    Also, Puss' anxiety hit me on a personal level for sure. That panic attack scene is still so powerful, and I'm so glad the people who made this movie took everything so seriously and knew just how to blend in all the comedy and emotional elements without anything feeling out of place!
    The whole plot is one of the most masterful ways I've seen the concept of death and anxiety portrayed alongside each other in a PG movie. The story definitely hit close to home for a lot of people I'm sure, which makes it timeless and SO rewatchable!
    I absolutely adore this movie, through and through, and I'm so happy to see you react to it! It deserves all the attention it can get! 💙

  • @Stratelier
    @Stratelier Місяць тому +14

    So when the wolf, Death, says he witnessed "all of" Puss's deaths, go rewatch the opening fight with the giant -- when the camera pans across the crowd doing "the wave", the wolf can be found near the top-left of frame, standing quietly behind the crowd in a dark alley.
    I think my favorite moment is when Perrito shows up outside Jack's factory ("easy peasy..." -- "...lemon squeezy!") because once that happens, you just KNOW he's going to tag along for the entire adventure. Followed by that awkward moment when Puss, Kitty, Goldie, and Jack all meet each other and it's revealed that _everybody already knows each other_ in one way or another.
    My hot take for this film is even Jack Horner "got" what he wished for: he gets to BE the new Wishing Star, with access to all the magic in the world. It only cost him himself.

    I watched an analysis video when this movie first came out about the antagonists and it talked about how there's two main things going on with Puss in this story- both the journey for the wish as well as his character growth arc. Jack Horner as an antagonist is involved with the wish plotline but not the character growth plot, Death is involved with the character growth aspect of the story but doesn't care at all about the wish, and Goldy starts as competition for the wish but later is revealed to actually be on her own character growth arc that parallels Puss' so eventually becomes his ally. I think that the different ways the antagonists are involved with the story is vital for allowing the tension to stay so high, because there's so many "villains" (even though arguably Jack is the only true villain), but not feel like things are repetitive. Quite possibly one of the best antagonist rosters I've ever seen in a movie.

    I really love how DreamWorks wanted to sort of celebrate their step into the world of mixing 2D and 3D. For the marketing of the movie, as far as I remember, all we really saw was the art style change, not really Puss, and it was so exciting because the bits of Puss we could see were pretty different from the 2011 film, like beyond a simply art style change. I made sure to avoid any ads and spoilers once I decided to go see it, and the opening of the film just kept hyping everyone up for his new look. And building up to a musical number was brilliant. There was a bit of cheering and clapping when his face was finally revealed, I loved it. His design is perfect, no notes. And I'm so happy everyone seems to like it ^^

    One of my favorite details: The cards counting down Puss' deaths... the corner motifs are the wolf. I also love that, in the end, Goldilocks' dress goes from blue to brown, more closely resembling the bears.
    For me, Death isn't a villain. Antagonist, but he isn't evil. At the start of the movie, Puss is being pretty awful, objectively speaking. Like, everyone at that party was going to end up in jail because Puss had to put the party on at the governor's mansion. Not to mention the danger that everyone was in, just being around a sword fight... where fireworks were used as weapons... oh, and the fact that Puss going over the top with the fireworks woke up the giant, which would have gotten people eaten. Yes, in the end, Puss made sure that no one died or went to prison (that we know of), but it doesn't change the fact that he was the reason any of them were in danger in the first place. I think it would be foolish to think that this was the first time he's put people in danger in service of "The Legend." And, sure, Death leaves him alone through his depression, but the moment he goes back to his showboating and putting people's lives in danger (seriously, it would not have been difficult for someone to die by being run over by a horse there), there is Death, reminding him to be careful. And... at the end of the day... Death does succeed in "killing" that version of Puss, letting the new Puss (who appreciates and respects the people close to him, rather than just the legend) live.
    At the end of the day, there is so much beauty, artistry, and visual storytelling in this one, and it is just SO satisfying!

    The entire cast is amazing, but I'd just like to shout out to Da'Vine Joy Randolph as Mama Luna. Mama Luna may have been a bit eccentric but she meant well. I would have loved a post-credit scene in which she is overseeing repairs on her home when a cart delivers a huge, heavy package. Mama reads the attached note: "Thank you for your hospitality. Please accept this golden gift from Puss in Boots. Sincerely, Pickles." She opens the package to find fifty gold litter boxes.

    You’re 100% right that Goldi and the Bears are the antiheroes of the film! They just had their own goal that made them competition for the main crew, but at the end when they no longer needed the Wish, sided with Puss and Team Friendship to stop Jack Horner. Jack Horner is obviously the villain, he’s just irredeemably evil and doesn’t care about anyone but himself (not even his own team does he care about as we saw, aha-), but the best ‘villain’ was definitely Death.
    Death is the antagonist, as his only job was the teach Puss a lesson about learning to value life, since what he was really pissed off about was Puss not acknowledging his own privilege of having eight more lives than everyone else. He wasn’t angry at Puss saying he laughs in the face of Death, but rather how he essentially laughed in the face of Life, and took it for granted in stupid in reckless ways. He literally says, “I find the very idea of nine lives absurd, and you didn’t value any of them.” Then when Puss learned his lesson, Death lets him go.
    It’s incredible how the most intimidating character in this film is also so caring about life and about valuing it and living it to the best of your ability. Death really does care more than is initially thought. Absolutely my favorite Dreamworks antagonist, and Dreamworks film hands down. So glad you watched it!

    Just when you thought it couldn't get better with Shrek 2. Another example on how you do a sequel... no, scratch that. How you do a movie, period! All kinds of awesome villains with different motivations, great animation and soundtrack, an awesome sidekick, higher stakes, and of course, one heck of a life lessons. Death everywhere too (no pun intended) so there was no fear in trying things differently and far more extreme than previous attemps. They took risks with this movie, and it worked beautifully. Is it any wonder why it was so extremely popular? 😂
    Also, I know Death is the favorite of many, but let's take the time to appreciate what an awesome villain Jack Horner is. I hate when characters forgive villains too quickly or try too hard to change them, or worse yet, when they make villains seem sympathetic because of their motivations or circumstances. Disney has been doing that a lot lately. Some people, even in real life, are really that evil because they enjoy it or for the stupidest and pettiest of reasons. Greed and jealousy especially.

    For me, this one is the best of the Shrek-verse.
    And, of course, the easter eggs in this are... amazing. Go back through and watch the movie again.
    When Puss defeats the giant, they do a pan shot across the crowd... and you can see someone familiar in the background _not_ cheering.
    When they go through the list of the ways Puss has died, there's a card with the number in it for each one. Check out the corners of each card.
    When Goldie Locks is in the cabin with the bears, there's a book. Read downward, the first letters of each line.
    I think there are more, but I can't remember them right now.
    I don't remember the other Puss movie, either. Except the reason she's called Kitty Softpaws. She had an owner once... and they declawed her. This is a practice which, today, is considered abuse in many places. For some cats, the surgery leads to chronic pain. They basically end up hurting for the rest of their lives. All to spare furniture. I would never declaw a cat.
    Just so you're aware, "perrito" is Spanish for "little dog".
    Good reaction!
    Have a nice day!

    The weapons wielded by Death are actually called sickles. They're basically small versions of the full-sized scythe(though I think they may predate the scythe 🤔).
    If you're at all a reader there's some fantasy novels by the author Jenniffer Wardell that basically turn typical fairy tale stuff on its head.
    You don't have to read them in any particular order as each novel is it's own independent story, though they all take place in the same universe/setting, but some of the more recent novels do make vague references to things connected to earlier novels.
    The author does more than fantasy, but I haven't read those that weren't fantasy so I'll only list the novels I've read(in order of publication):
    *Fairy Godmothers Inc.*
    *Beast Charming*
    *Huff and Puff*
    *Two Left Feet*
    *Fighting Sleep* (which is a rewrite of their own novel Dreamless)
    Lastly there's *Once Upon a Tale* which isn't a novel so much as a collection of short stories showing more about some of the characters from *Fairy Godmothers Inc.* and *Beast Charming* specifically(most of them are bits of backstory before those novels but there's one that gives a glimpse of things after one of the novels).

    Ahh i dunno I gotta disagree with the idea that Kitty wasn't in Santa Coloma XD Personally, it doesn't make sense for her to be as upset if she wasn't there (especially when her wish was for someone she could trust. How can she be so sure he's untrustworthy if she wasn't there to have her trust broken?). I think she just said she wasn't so that Puss would stop feeling bad since she found out he actually does regret it. Saying she wasn't there and telling him that 'she knew' he was too vain to care about someone else forces him to really reflect, and it puts them back on equal ground. If, to his knowledge, they both weren't there they can basically start over again.
    Also side note, did ya catch when Kitty takes her mask off and puts in on? It shows how she's opening up to people!
