I watched this on the night it happened. I thought it was a bit tepid at first, but OMG, it built up to such a great crescendo. Even when ragged, Todd's voice is so visceral. A True genius, a True Star.
Yea, this is demonstrably the best version of this absolutely stand out R&B groove out from Todd. With all good R&B ya need the killer lick repeating to drive it. That's the piano chords that set up the song by themselves. Everything else falls into place around that. The bass player and drummer just nail - pun intended this groove down so perfectly. That bass player is really showing off with the dancing girls. Simple tight but so on the money his bass playing - tastefull - nailing it when needed - just a few subtle slaps in the verses at times to mix it up. i know the little blonde is Todd's wife. I am just mesmerised by the taller blonde BV singer though. she is gorgeous. the face she pulls when the song outros and she splashes the tamborine is just so gorgeous. todd and Bobby sound great together. do not underestimate how difficult it is to sing the bottom BV line that Bobby has to take. It;s sort of like an alto part. Very difficult lines to get - most people will be drawn to sing the main or the natural third harmony. Thats easy stuff - the alto harmony is always the difficult one. Ya can see Bobby pulls back at times because I reckon he is a bit unsure what note is actuallly required. But he nails it. Todd - just a bloody stunning vocal. He does get slightly lost for a few seconds at 2:53 but hey - he's a singer or at least was then, who really pushed the boundaries. Stunning. Love the synced dancing from the BV's and bass player.
From song to song Todd Rundgren seems to fly under radar for wider recognition. I don't understand why this guy doesn't get millions of watches, like hit music douchebags do
Wow…. Nice collision of talent….. love them both!!!!! Bobby so sweet, I have all your old songs that are timeless. Todd your innovation of music is exciting, and moving. I want more of both of you together
WOW! WHAT A GEM. Had to watch 2, 3...50 times. All these folks turned on the soul spigot and let it power out. Will Lee's bass drives the WMBD to musical heights to keep up with Todd's blue-eyed, rock-out soul! Bobby Womack, who sang on the original track, is a superlative touch. And the ladies in the back, Pattie Darcy-Jones (L) and Michele Gray (R), are stuff of any 80's male teenager wet dream" I'm exhausted and I haven't moved a muscle in 30 frigg'en minutes. Miss this at your peril!
In the 'for what it's worth' category: Todd's current wife, then Michele Grey -- anyone remember The Tubes? -- is the backup singer on the right. Todd is god!
Check out the UA-cam vids from 2011 - live at Daryl's (Daryl Hall) .. a good selection of Todd's hits and the performance and production are next level
@@davidgreenside301 I just found “Live from Daryl’s house” 2 weeks ago and have been SAVORING the performances! 🧡 Don’t know how I missed them all the first time around?? Thanks for posting about the vids here
Love the storyline and the presentation, so right, and thematically ticks with the later 'Soul Brother'. It good to have 'drive' , as a person, but 'driven'-no. Love this song, thanks for sharing.
I think Todd Ruddgren is tthe BEST of our time...! I wished the volume of all of the Lettermans uploads of Todd Ruddgren were LOUDER...?! Your the BEST Todd ! Thanks for all the great songs !
This bass line really stuck with me as a player. Lee’s bass line is reminiscent of the recording, but IMHO, he made it better. Master of the pocket (and super funky and precise), timing, and feel. Definitely a lesson.
Ha ha, I love this! Everybody was really great and I don't think I've ever seen Will Lee have this much fun before! Paul's band was smaller back then, but they were great and they still are!!
I do believe that is Larry Tagg (of Bourgeois Tagg fame) playing bass guitar, dancing with the singers behind Todd and Bobby. I know he played on the Nearly Human LP,.
Google the term "the want of a nail".........very interesting. Started back in the 1400's (I believe). The song demonstrates how such a tiny, simple thing like a nail in a horseshoe can have dire consequences of a whole Kingdom. The nail was lost (out of the horseshoe), the horseshoe was thrown, then the horse went lame, the rider was "lost" since he was unable to ride his horse, the message he was to deliver (during the battle) was lost (i.e. not delivered), the battle was then lost, then the war, then the Kingdom was overthrown and dissolved. The story line can compare to modern day catastrophies as well........a simple thing (failure) which effects a multitude of lives. Todd spins a story (part II) in the song and blames everything on the Blacksmith (for not getting the horseshoe nailed correctly). The blacksmith was supposably "un-loved" (no one to love me), so depressed, that he failed to get out of bed, go to work, and do his job at the Forge. I think what Todd is saying is "everyone needs to be loved", as everyone could have a role in the future of others.
How has this song not found another audience? Such a great song.
Look up his duet with Daryl Hall on Live From Daryl’s House…
Absolutely
What a phenomenal song, fantastic performance. Beyond pop, beyond standard formulaic BS. The one and only Todd Rundgren.
Love it.......
That must be the future Mrs. Rundgren, the short lady, singing back ups? She's cute!
Always wondered who the tall blonde was and if Will Lee scored with her.

@@robt.6221 Are you sure? They don't look alike.
Todd and Bobby together in one room?! OMG, the soul was through the roof!
One of my favorite Todd songs. He does it so well live! Great performer and so underrated.
Witness!! They nailed this...on spot!! Todd was sounding at his best vocally too...
Amen.
This song, this energy... we were different then
Just one of the best voices in rock
Excellent song from the fantastic Todd Rundgren!!❤❤❤
The man is a genius
damn, I saw this when it originally aired... bought the CD soon after.
Now that was a great TODD performance - Love it!
Todd at his most adorable best!!
Mr Rundgren is at the top of the artists/musician pile.
In 2022 still hot hot hot! Rest in musical peace, Bobby Womack!
I've never ever seen Todd that animated.. I guess I didn't really know that he could dance.. and he really, really CAN!
IKR?!! So fun to watch him dance!
Fantabulous. That was a very inspiring performance. Todd Rundgren is the best. 👍
Love this version. Blue eyed soul at its best.
Love this!! Todd is so freakin cool

Song is so much more profound than most realize-especially relevant for today. Bless ya TR.

Thats Todd's wife Michelle on the chorus in the back. The short blonde.
She is adorable and so sweet! Just so lovely as is Todd!
I was watching the backup girls and thinking " I wanna be a backup girl "This performance was 🔥🔥
There are no words except AMAZING! Love Todd!
Will Lee is having waaaaay too much fun!!!
Todd and Bobby together❤️❤️❤️!!!

Very cool that Todd had Bobby Womack on show--he wrote the song!

1989 is when this come out. I remember that summer when KFOG-104.5 in San Francisco on the 4th of July that night on 10 At 10.
Darnice Linton I loved KFOG!
I miss KFOG!! Growing up I was fortunate to get turned on to so much great music by their awesome DJ's. Great memories 😊📻🎶🌉
Another great Todd performance
Todd looks so ooooooooohhhh and Michele looks so happy , yay , thanks for sharing!!!

G K About 10 or so years ago The Tubes did a big anniversary show in Santa Cruz and Michelle flew out to sing backup again. :-)

Todd Rundgren is why there IS even a rock and roll hall of fame, and he's not in it! What does that tell you about the hall?
You ain't lying. Fan since I was a kid. Age 52 now. Have seen him 36x in concert.
I'm 50 but first time I saw Todd live was on the Nearly Human tour. Been a huge fan since I was 13
Im only finding this tonight. I'm 66, not boasting. Not sure did I ever this before.
Oh man! Soul! Groove! Heart!
This is solid gold, damn did they nail it
😆
One of my favorite songs of all time!!! I actually saw this tour in 1990!!! Incredible!
Gosh, he's so good.
Todd is my rock God. At the same time the Most Dangerous Band is completely awesome. Anton is one hell of a drummer! Of course who couldn't love Paul?
Bobby Womack AWESOME. Will Lee is SO GREAT on this track. great to watch and in the pocket. Of course, Todd is the best!
Such a banger song and performance and it was like the audience had to be shaken to give some moderate applause. Pearls before swine.
Two of my favorites Bobby and Todd, there is another video of them in the studio with a whole gang of people, also fun to watch.
“Live at Daryl’s house” here on UA-cam
I just absolutely love this! No words...
Todd, nobody does it better, you are the best
Yrs. ago.. LOVE THIS more than I can say.. Thank you
The version form Live At Daryl's house also excellent!
Love Todd and Daryl. 2 of my all time favourite musicians ❤
i worked in a lab that had wbcn on the radio constantly (boston), they played this song quite a bit that summer.....
I think Todd Ruddgren is tthe BEST of our time...! I wished the volume of all of the Lettermans uploads of Todd Ruddgren were LOUDER...?! Your the BEST Todd ! Thanks for all the great songs !
If you listen to this on the TR on DL compilation the sound it is better I believe the bass comes thru more starts around 12-13 mins in I believe.
Thanks again for posting these....classics!
Never enough Todd
Always loved my fellow Philly brother
This bass line really stuck with me as a player. Lee’s bass line is reminiscent of the recording, but IMHO, he made it better. Master of the pocket (and super funky and precise), timing, and feel. Definitely a lesson.
I remember seeing this, buying Todd's album and that was it, I was a fan ever since!
Amazing performance. Those backup singers are getting down with their bad selves.
Todd is married to one of them
@@markwalden1403 The one on the right. They live in a Hawaii on a golf course. Imagine that
@@michael-frey4425 Yep, and they have a son called Rebop!
What a beautiful collaboration!
Ha ha, I love this! Everybody was really great and I don't think I've ever seen Will Lee have this much fun before! Paul's band was smaller back then, but they were great and they still are!!
This is great funk. Todd is nothing if not versatile 🎉
God how much better to be a musician than a talk show host.
Funtastic. Great Upload. Thank You rogsteel
Great song!! Great Todd!!❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic
Todd and Bobby!!! Bobby still rocks! My boy Woody is his guitarist.
Or better yet or even more sadder even..... how are the 6 and a half decades of THE MOODY BLUES!!!

Todd squad! Awesome entertainer. Peace n smoke
How is Todd Rundgren NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?!!!!
Two little hittlers Great album I heard now I see once again
The whole album is solid gold. Watch the Japan video. Todd at his best. There will never be another like him. I’ve been a fan for 50 years. ❤❤❤
Paul, getting it done
Todd has stated that he would NOT accept an invite to the RRHOF....but I agree with all below, he is one of the greats.
I do believe that is Larry Tagg (of Bourgeois Tagg fame) playing bass guitar, dancing with the singers behind Todd and Bobby. I know he played on the Nearly Human LP,.
Todd is the man!
I LOVE THIS MAN. ❤❤❤
have seen Todd 9 x's== had tickets to his concert in Tampa== he said do not come to the concert if you voted for trump( republicans, etc)
