  • In this video I share the best album covers, or what I consider some of my favorites! I focus primarily on rock records, of course! What do you consider the best album covers? This list is NOT comprehensive. I just thought it would be a fun discussion! There are too many amazing album covers to list in a single video, am I right?!
I'm Hanna, and thanks for watching! Like my video? Please subscribe and give me a thumbs up!

Jazz label Blue note had amazing artwork , their album covers are very beautiful , outstanding. Some other favorites ... Sweet 'desolation boulevard' , Husker du 'warehouse' , Kinks 'kontroversy' , Grace Jones 'nightclubbing' , Ramones 'too tough to die' and - of course ... - Roxy music 'country life'!

The Kink Kontroversy (1966) Dave's Guild and group shots add visual correlation to adrenaline raveups and lyrical character narratives. (British Jacket) The American pressing has them in their 1964 riding jackets.
Van Morrison-Veedon Fleece 1974 ( Wolfhounds and scenery superimposed around Van!)
Love 1s Lp 1966 (Quintessential group shot, front cover and back)
Mothers of Invention- Weasels Ripped My Flesh (1971) Cannot be unseen or forgotten.
Devo - Are We Not Men? 1978
    Same as above.
Opal- Happy Nitemare Baby 1987 Austere snapshots of fragile alliance. Sonically dense and lyrical.
    Great fun with this one,Hannah!
Velvet Underground- Loaded -1970 Looks like the urban transcendence and motion the music sings about. And the cleanest subway stop ever! (A drawing).

Hi there, Lawrence! Some really fab covers you listed here...some others have not brought up and I agree that 1st Love LP - what a cover. Can't go wrong with any of their first 4, really! And that Opal cover - love! Wonder if I will ever find that one on vinyl...same thing with Loaded from VU. I don't think I've ever seen a vinyl copy. One day...one day! Thanks for posting a comment, as always! I enjoy reading your thoughts!

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures. I saw it on a shelf in a record store in 1982. There were almost no words on the entire sleeve and I had no idea who Joy Division were or what they sounded like and I thought to myself..."They say you should never judge a book by its cover but...that's one hell of a cover...I gotta know what the hell this is" and I bought it on the spot. When I got home and listened to it, I hated it. To be fair, I was 12 years old. About 5 or 6 more listens later, I thought it was the greatest thing I had ever heard. It's weird how some music just takes time before you get it.

Hello Hanna 😊 Thanks for sharing some of your favorites. A lot of album art from the 70's was quite epic and iconic. Two of my favorites from that decade is Todd Rundgren's album A Wizard, A True Star and Gary Wright's Light of Smiles album. If you ever have the chance to look those up (the vinyl covers) the air brush work is fantastic, as you said you can really take time to ponder. Enjoyed, take care!

hey there, its me again.. goin through some of your content and i love it.. you have such wonderful taste in music.. anyway my fav cover of all times would be goo by sonic youth.. the second would be animals by pink floyd.. thats cause my dad used to have a copy on vinyl and it scared me so bad when i was a kid that i ended up lovin it.. i think the whole vibe of that record is just incredible.. surreal to say the least..theres this contrast goin on with the heavyness of the landscape and this flying pig.. so strange.. and its a perfect match with the music.. but goo is so iconic to me, cause of my adolescence, which was the best time of my life, that has to be on top of everything else. oh and third i pick three imaginary boys by the cure which was my first alternative record ever.. i started to make music because of that. keep it up hanna. also genuinely looking forward to some new amazing covers on your soundcloud page. cheers.

Great idea. Love a lot of your coices. The Smashing Pumpkins' Cover is super cool, yes. How about the Cover-Concept of the White Stripes and later on Jack White ... And: May I add some Jazz ones: Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" as well as "Decoy". "Undercurrent" - Bill Evans and Jim Hall. All the iconic Bluenote-Covers. Or check out "Moondog" (by Moondog). Finally, looking into the Country genre, of cource, Johnny Cash and his American Recordings. I suppose, I forgot about 476 other candidates overall ;-) Take care.

Fun video! Cannot complain about any of your choices. You seem to have a predilection for the psychedelic album covers. That Dukes of The Stratosphere album surely owes a debt to Disraeli Gears?
I Am A Cliche had a handful of theater screenings here. I highly recommend it. Poly Styrene's story is told through the eyes of her daughter.
I love that Germ Free Adolescents cover. In the documentary, they mention how Poly was disappointed that they had made her picture thinner to fit in the test tube. She wanted to be seen as she was.
I look forward to your Hoodoo Gurus video. They were a fun live act in the 80s. Stoneage Romeos is my favorite I think. Also a great album cover. Also loved the video for I Want You Back

Hi Hanna. Great covers. My favorite covers are the ones Gered Mankowitz take from Suzi Quatro and the band. That might have something to do with the fact that my mother (who brought me the cassette Suzi Quatro) dislike the cover . I guess that for 12 old that meant that the cover is extra cool. :) Anyway never get over it and have brought pile of her singles with the picture sleeves from these sessions. Hey Hanna,
I just.love album covers !! My favorite Bowie cover in Aladdin Sane…also my fav album of his musically. Stooges Fun House is great. The Who Sell Out is amazing , but the cover of Who’s Next with the double meaning of the title and the monolith is so classic !!
    List of favorites
1 Derek & the Dominos Layla …a real painting !
2 Small Faces Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake with the circular cover of a tobacco can.
3 The Rolling Stones Let It Bleed
4 Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East with all the equipment boxes …fantastic music too !
5 Deep Purple In Rock with the band members on Mt Rushmore ….Heavy Metal forged in rock … what a concept !!!
Fun topic….could go on for hours.

Hi, Hanna! The art of album covers really started to have an aesthetic importance in the 60s and since then until today there are so many covers that have become classic, iconic, honored and parodied as well. Some of my favorite covers: Elvis Presley-Elvis Presley (1956), The Clash-London Calling (1979), The Beatles-Abbey Road (1969), The Rolling Stones-Let it Bleed (1969), Pink Floyd-Animals (1977), AC/DC-Highway to Hell (1979), King Crimson-In The Court of the Crimson King (1969), Van Halen-1984 (1984), Boston-Boston (1976), Santana-Abraxas (1970), Mountain-Climbing! (1970), Thin Lizzy-Jailbreak (1976), Rainbow-Rising (1976), New Order-Power, Corruption and Lies (1983), Duran Duran-Rio (1982), Tears For Fears-Songs From The Big Chair (1985), Michael Jackson-Thriller (1982), Big Brother & The Holding Company-Cheap Thrills (1968), Beastie Boys-Licensed to Ill (1986), Dio-Holy Diver (1983), Nirvana-Nevermind (1991), ZZ Top-Eliminator (1983), The Strokes-Is This It (international cover, 2001), Red Hot Chili Peppers-Californication (1999), Joy Divison-Unknown Pleasures (1979), The Smiths-The Queen is Dead (1986), Bob Dylan-Nashville Skyline (1969), Blur-Parklife (1994), Queen-Queen II (1974) and Ramones-Ramones (1976). Great topic! It seems album art is rarely ever discussed even though it is just as important as the music on the record. It's a part of the whole package. I've bought plenty of records because of the artwork, without having heard the music. Most times the music was just as great.
A couple of my faves are Rubella Ballet - At Last It's Playtime (UK; 1985) and 9353 - To Whom It May Consume (Washington DC; 1984). The most offensive album cover ever though is Feederz - Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss? (Phoenix AZ; 1984). The front cover is a piece of sandpaper!

Red Rider's previous effort, As Far as Siam has cool artwork as well, this is the album that has the amazing " Lunatic Fringe " on it. Lot's of classic covers here. The best ones to me are the ones that there was some serious thought put into the composition. The Who Sell Out is one of those that fits the bill and it's also representative of the album's content. The Rain Parade is a new one for me. I'll have to check it out. I've always loved the Madness, Ocean Rain, Ziggy Stardust and Parallel Lines covers. I am totally with you on your number one album cover. I've always wanted to see the original painting (The Souvenir (Fidelity)) that the main image is taken from. I am surprised you don't have that one on vinyl at all. An OG goes for far more money than I care to spend. Looking it up online, it really needs to be repressed. It looks like it's being pirated again after the 2014 box set repress.

Paul, Happy Friday! I need to catch up on your latest video offering, too. Glad you love some of these covers I shared, too! That Rain Parade LP sounds as good as the cover! Definitely very 60s inspired and jangly. Yeah, the only Pumpkins LPs I have on vinyl are the reissues of Gish, Siamese Dream, and Pisces Iscariot. I couldn't believe the $1,450 price tag on that OG Mellon Collie. I nearly had heart failure! Damn! It really does deserve a quality repress. Fingers crossed! Thanks again for watching my last few videos...not my typical content, lol.

I loved it when I read that Peter Doig, now one of the world's most successful painters, said he got into art as he wanted to make album covers. As a working-class boy myself, Album art and comics were really the only examples of art I got to see as a kid. My actual all-time fave isn't from an album but was the cover art of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's single Relax, painted by Yvonne Gilbert, and it still is. I had the 12-inch anyway so it was the same size as my albums anyway. I even tried to replicate on my teenage bedroom wall. It is a great shame that cover art seems like a bit of a lost craft (maybe it is not, and I am just old!).

I do like Mellon Collie, I had the 4 LP set that had big books of art in it as well as a track by track writeup by Billy Corgan. Sadly, I had to sell it during a rough financial spell. Funhouse is definitely peak Stooges. Some others I like are Zep III with the wheel insert you spin to change the picture. Tarkus, which looks like something an 11 year old kid would draw. Can't go wrong with those Roger Dean Yes covers. I wish I was as cool as Patty Smith on the cover of Horses. Of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping is cool; I think it was painted by Kevin Barnes's brother. Haim's last album is cool, them in Canter's looking like they mean business. I lucked into a signed copy of that one. Hope you guys are doing well! At the time we all assumed it was because they were mad at Stanley Kubrick for not wanting to film Tommy, but it was just a random act. My favorite Beatles' lp cover is Beatles For Sale. @tom7979 2 роки тому

@@bishlap I absolutely adore the album cover for Rid of Me. It’s not conventionally attractive and that’s why I love it - the shape of her hair swinging over her head like some kind of animalistic claw, the blank expression on PJ’s face, the high contrast black and white (partly due to the fact that the photo was taken in pitch black with the flash on, and the camera butted up against the wall opposite because the bathroom was so tiny). It conveys a sense of menacing danger and unhinged psychosis that perfectly fits the music, and the sheer fact that Maria Mochnacz (the photographer) had very little control over the outcome due to working in a tiny pitch black room makes it’s incredibly striking look even more phenomenal because it happened by chance. Even the leaf of the plant creeping in at the right hand side along with the tiles of the scabby bathtub makes it feel just that little bit nastier.
I also love the Dry cover because it looks the way it sounds, (dry, bodily, a little bit nasty and raw), and I love the To Bring You My Love cover because it reminds me of ‘Ophelia’ by John Everett Millais and to an extent, the dead woman in the bathtub in The Shining.
