These 3 Keys Will Make You a Faster Editor!

- Camtasia 2023 has just been updated (2023.1) to include Variable Speed Playback in the editor!
Use the J, K & L keys on your keyboard to control playback by going in reverse, pausing, or going forward respectively, and if you tap the J & L keys multiple times it speeds up how fast playback happens!
Pro film & video editors have been using this trick for years in other video editors, and the developers behind Camtasia have implemented it for you to speed up your own workflow, immensely shortening the time it takes to edit longer footage.

0:13 - What's variable speed playback?
0:27 - The L key will playback at speeds from 1-8x forward
0:42 - The J key will playback at speeds from 1-8x backward
0:54 - The K key stops playback

If you don't have Camtasia 2023, you can buy it (or do a FREE trial) here:
bit.ly/3Xp1lTb - Наука та технологія
If you already own Camtasia 2023, just go into your File menu (on Mac) or Help Menu (on Win) and choose "Check For Updates" to get this feature!
Hi, btw "Check for updates", is under the Help menu on windows.
I've been asking for accelerated playback for a looooong time. I'm so glad it's here. OK, so now I have a justification to upgrade from Camtasia 2021 to the latest version!
YESSSS! been waiting for this. Wish there was a 1.5x so I could understand the voice (2x is slightly faster than I can understand) but I'll take this huge step forward. Thank you!
YES!! I will add my UPVOTE to this request. This would put Camtasia AHEAD of the competiton.
I use Davinci Resolve for editing videos for my wife - and the 2x playback means that the 40+ hours of dog training video editing didn't take me 40 hours to edit/review - for long time Camtasia users it'll be important to remember this feature exists - particularly when editing longer videos. Massive, and I mean MASSIVE time saver! Well done!
This is fantastic! This will make creating and using proxy clips even more important - so I would recommend doing that before going through clips at speed.
A great recommendation! For those who haven't done it, you can make a proxy video this way: ua-cam.com/video/NRW9Xrm3nkM/v-deo.html
Fantastic this resource! Thank you!
This is wonderful! Thank you so much for sharingg!!
Love it! I’ve been looking for this for a long time.
I appreciate the ability to do this via the keyboard. Will have to build the muscle memory on this one, but I like that JKL are all in sequence on the keyboard. Thank you!
This is terrific. Can't wait to try it. This will be a great addition. I have been waiting for this change. Thank you Techsmith
Much needed! Thank you for the quick tip!
Bam!!! So needed and a HUGE time saver! 😊❤
Very cool! This will be helpful, thanks. And a few suggestions:
1. Have an option to play sound when scrubbing the timeline.
2. The shortcut to insert a marker while recording requires pressing half the keys on the keyboard. Make that editable in the Shortcut tab of preferences.
3. There should be a shortcut to selectively delete gaps on the timeline. Like the magnet button, but selective, not all gaps.
4. When pausing and resuming a recording, there should be an option to return the mouse pointer to its location.
5. When recording webcam video, optionally display a monitor thumbnail like in a video conference.
Thanks for the feedback! We will pass it along to the team.
I'm here to vote for #4!! :)
@@BurnBlisterPeel While that doesn't currently exist during recording, if you open the Cursor tab on the particular recorded clip, you can edit the Cursor path. Find the first point, and align it to your previous clip (you may want to overlap them on the timeline, then reduce the top clips opacity to 50% so you can see them both at once).
OMG, this is amazing!!!! Such a time saver!
Excellent addition to Camtasia. What a boon to finding a location quickly and easily. This is greatly appreciated!
Thank you! Another amazing step forward. You've helped me out a ton with this feature. 💓💓
I've been using Camtasia for about 4 years, and I have to say, it is SO good. I've used Davinci, Premiere Pro, and Filmora, and for me, it is by far the easiest to use. Thank you!
You guys are super. Love the changes.
Been waiting for this feature forever. Excited it has been added. 😊 Thx
This is something I have been hoping for! Thank you!
Yes!!! This has been one of my biggest wishes since I started using Camtasia back in 2010!! Thank you 🎉
Thank you for sticking with us for this long! ❤🎉
@@techsmith I think Camtasia is a lifetime match for me 💕
Fabulous new feature, thank you!
This was very helpful in Premeir Pro! Glad to see it here!
Great. a must have function I always expected to work easier when editing. Thanks.
can't wait to use it! Thanks!
Great addition to your already awesome toolset. I will definitely take advantage of it.

Boom! Thanks for adding this.
Wonderful! I know I've been pestering the team for over five years about this feature, and I too am happy that Andy got to be the one to present it to the world. I still remember him saying once, "I know, I know... trust me, I want the feature as much as you do." 🤣 Thank you all so much for your hard work on finally bringing this feature to Camtasia.
Oh man Chase, I LOVE that you remember that (Andy here again)! High-fives all around! 👏
super - thanks for sharing
After using this feature for 3ish months, I have one suggestion, but first I must keep bragging on how awesome this feature is already! Great work!!!
My idea is that there be also a 3x (and possibly a 5x). Sometimes 2x is easy to understand while searching for errors and 4x is incomprehensible. Other times I can still make out what 4x is saying but I can't understand if I made any mistakes for 8x, so some in between settings would further make error catching very very quick. That being said - you guys have already saved me a ton of time with these controls so THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words! I'll mention your suggestion to the development team!
@@techsmith Yeah, not for nothing yt has 1.25/1.5/1.75x
A great idea and useful tip.
Nice! Can the key bindings be changed, if we'd like?
I believe they can be changed on Windows, not Mac.
Here's what I think about this: ALLELUIA!!!! 🎉🙏
Beat me to it Celia😅
LOVE SHORTCUTS!!! THX
This is awesome. Game changer. I was adding the "clip speed" into the clip and making it 2x. Then removing it after I am done. But if have multiple tracks that is tough to get it right. Thank you for this tip.
I have been waiting for this!!!! Yay
Fannnnnntastic!!!!
loving this for all of our journeys
I love how this shortcut popped up when I opened Camtasia. Very handy tip!
Neat! Can't wait to try that one.
That's great! Hope this will make editing life a bit easy!
Very helpful and I will start using immediately
This is the best news ever. I recently submitted a ticket for this and you guys heard and did it. THANK YOU. This will save me SO SO SO MUCH TIME
So glad to hear this!! Have fun editing!
This is great!
Oh man, can you believe it, literally finished editing a 13 minute tutorial, decided to take 5, and checked linked In and saw this. This would of definitely helped the production process rather than scrubbing the play bar. But hey, will be a big help on the next projects and will certainly be using JKL.
Hopefully in the near future some additional audio affects like being able to cross fade between music tracks would be a big help. 👍
This is great! I cannot wait to use it.
I've been wanting software that could do this for years! Love it! Thanks for the upgrade!
Our pleasure! 👏
Stoked for this, my video podcast editing workflow will never be the same. 🔥🔥🔥
TechSmith is D-BEST! 🤗Love the JKL - game changer in editing efficiencies. Thanks for the quick video which explained the news succinctly❗
Outstanding upgrade! Thanks, guys!
Nice, thank you.
Yes, I will be using this feature!
SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!
Awesome !!!
This Just changed everything for us. we are flying through projects now
THANK YOU
We LOVE to hear that!! So glad you're enjoying it!
Super, makes life easier. Thanks.
THIS IS AWESOME!!!
I was just editing a video yesterday and wished we had this feature. Thanks! (a day late on my part!)
Tickled about this!
Thanks
This is amazing! I'll definitely use it!
This is huge. I do this a lot in Resolve, so I know I'll do it here.
Very nice. Love it ♥
Great Add!!
You guys are the best product designers.
Thank you! A great feature I have been looking for. A suggestion for the future (not in any way taking away from this great user-asked-for feature): 1. Could you build in a "Show me the new features" button/flying bird/hovering construction crane or something? I saw this in my email but I would have not found it in the application. Never would have thought of the keys. The video was excellent so make it easy for us to find your videos on new features. Thanks for listening to us!!
You're in luck! We've recently added a "What's New" section in Camtasia Home. (That first window/touch-point when you open Camtasia). On the left there's a tab that says "What's New" and that shows just that! :) Hope that helps! app.screencast.com/a3cYIeX9RkC0n
This is great, it will help for sure. I agree with the .5 increments, and also wondering why there isn't an option to select speed in playbar, rather than using keys. I almost didn't even know this even existed.
Thank you for adding this feature. As a Camtasia user for >20 years (yes!!), I've wondered why it has taken you so long to catch up with the competition. NEXT, please add the capability to add a Stroke or Outline to text callouts. (I've mentioned this in the forums for years, but it seems to fall on deaf ears.) Thanks again for this feature.
Thanks for sticking with us so long! As for Stroke on Text....let's talk again on June 4th... ;)
Thank you!
WOOHOO!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Happy dancing over here.
Good work, Andy! And thanks to your coding team. We are still waiting for a shortcut key to enter "Edit audio" mode.
I might actually start editing my videos now!
Yes!!! Thank you.😎
about 10 years late, finally switched to another app, also due to apparent lack of arrow key and magic track pad/gesture controls but thanks for the effort, now I know;)
This I like. Working on videos can be a pain. With this option, I can concentrate on the video & edit can be faster, cleaner, & a lot less time-consuming.
Thks so much 👍
Love the JKL addition. I would like to something that would allow 0.5x forward and reverse playback to help hone in on the edit point.
We've got it now in Camtasia 2024 (video coming soon)! in Camtasia 2024 (only) hold "Shift" when pressing either J or L and it will slow down to .75, .5, .25 & .125 playback speeds. It will also slow down if you're playing fast at 8x, one speed at a time (down to 6, etc).
We've also added a few more incremental steps like 1.5x, & 3x. Video should be up in the next week or two!
Andy - Nice, however, those who use a mouse with their right hand (virtually all) you should think about using A, S & D (or S, D &F) your keeping your right mouse hand free.
Thanks! (Andy here). The thought behind JKL is more of a cursor-free workflow, honestly. If you're using JKL to navigate the timeline, and you want make a cut you can use keyboard shortcuts on the left of the keyboard. (Windows tap S - Mac Cmd+T) and keep moving along. JKL is an industry standard (even here on UA-cam where it skips forward and backward 10 seconds and pauses), so the other part of the goal is to make it easier for editors from other software to migrate over with recognizable shortcuts.
handy to now have the same keyboard functionality as Premiere Pro to make it easier when switching....
This is going to save time! I'll have to remember I have this option.
WOOT WOOT - thanks!!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I've been waiting for this so long, I want to review my video once I edited it and its SO tedious to preview it in slow mode. Please tell me this works for the entire timeline not just one particular footage clip. PS. There should be a key to decrease the speed, not completely stop it by pressing K
whoop! Great news.
I like this feature
ERMAGERRRRD ⏩❤⏪
That is awesome!! I am looking for this feature!. It is possible you can also add 3D text and fancy text style?
Text styles are a request we’ve heard, but I don’t believe is currently in the works…I may be wrong…
Aaaawwww You had me at EDIT FASTER ❤
welcome to 2023 just kidding nice job!
YES! My number one dream feature has been added!
👏👏👏
Wohoo, finally!!! :)
🙌
JKL is cool. But here's something to make the function more accessible for right and left handed workers. Make JKL for left handed mouse users, and ASD (if not tied to anything) for right handed mouse users. When I work in after effects, I tend to keep my hand on the mouse and will use the shortcuts-combinations on my left hand on the keyboard as much as possible.
Also, SVG support please, and multiple window sessions for Windows!! Mac can do it, why not PC?
Hallelujah!
Fantastic news!! Is it also possible to export (parts of) the video in a higher speed? because it adds some fun and makes the video more engaging
We just released a video showing how to do that last week actually! ua-cam.com/video/Z-d3E5okR6g/v-deo.html
Yay!
Looooooove this 🤩
Cool update. Really could use that .MOV support though. 24, 48fps too.
I have to use Vegas 20 now since I bought my new camera but Camtasia layout is second to none.
Thanks for the kind words! Could you clarify your MOV comment? We do support decoding of almost all .MOV streams, but we can’t encode to ProRes .MOV on Windows currently.
@@techsmith I purchased a Panasonic GH6 and it films in MP4, .MOV, and Apple ProRes formats. I use the .MOV since the Mbps options are way higher and nicer than anything in .MP4 thus why I bought the camera. I tried the 5.7k options all the way down to 1080p in the .MOV format with the camera. None of them run in Camtasia correctly.
They will load the file, but the video is unplayable in the editor, (distorted), and the audio is completely missing. I know Camtasia is also capped at 4k but I like to film in the higher resolutions and render it down to 4k, 1080p, or sometimes even 720p for finished work.
I know you guys are geared more for desktop presentation materials but I have used your software for almost 2 years now with a GoPro and I was able to do so much with it compared other editors. The intuitiveness of the editor is great and friendly to explore and play with to learn new things. If it was tailored just a bit to accommodate these type of cameras, it would capture a whole other piece of the market in filming.
Sounds great. I look forward to trying it. This last update was also supposed to have export to MP3. I can’t find it. I updated, but I still only have the option to export to M4a
If you've done "Check for Updates" and installed 2023.1 you should find it either under the "Export -> Export Audio Only" menu, OR "File -> Export -> Export Audio Only" menu. If you're on Windows it's been there all along, so I'm assuming you're on Mac?
@@techsmith yes, I’m on a Mac. And yes, that’s the procedure for export audio that I’ve been using. But the output after the update continues to be only.M4a. When I did the update, I noticed in the notes for the update, that it said new feature would be ability to export to MP3. M4a a similar format, which is actually more compressed than MP3, but it’s not MP3.
@@nycesl Can you open up a support ticket (link below)? We for sure released mp3 export and you should be able to use it after the update, so our technical support team will want to take a look to see what's gone wrong here. Thanks! bit.ly/techsmith-help
I figured it out! it was there all the time. The problem is by default it exports to.m4a. But all you have to do is click on the bottom on the drop-down menu. where you name the file and you have the option to change the extension to mp3. Pretty simple I just didn’t realize it.
By the way, the JKL feature is wonderful. It really is. I particularly like using the J feature to rewind you can actually hear the audio in reverse so that you can listen and hear exactly where you want to stop. It’s not the same as a rewind button, it actually goes in reverse And listening to English in reverse is a trip… It sounds like Swedish or Norse or something.
Yes! When will we have that in Snagit? (I'm recording my screen in Snagit and sometimes, have to cut parts.) Camtasia is too big to load and I don’t need the Camtasia tools for that kind of video. Having this in Snagit could really help!
Also! Please, tell me what kind of camera you have used to record this video? It's awesome and I'd like to record in the same way you did with the background and all.. Thanks!
Not currently planned for Snagit, sorry. I'll mention to the dev team though.
