Jazzy Jeff's 3 Tips For DJing With Stems
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лис 2024
- Nowadays, DJs can easily separate drums, melodies and vocals in their tracks, either when DJing or before a set. In this video, the legend Jazzy Jeff explains three ways he's been using stems recently, to inspire you to do the same in your DJ sets.
Stems are built in to Algoriddim's djay Pro AI for Mac and iPhone/iPad, and Virtual DJ for Mac and Windows. The most DJ-friendly app for separating stems ahead of time for your music is Algoriddim's Neural Mix Pro AI.

Thanx Phil Morse and Jazzy Jeff for the great video!! The best DJ school and the best DJ, what more could you want!! I use VDJ, and I’ve been playing around with the stems a lot lately, and you better believe I’m gonna try that Chaka Kahn/Big Daddy Kane mix later!!!! 🎶🎶👍🏾
Thanks for your kind words. Hope you have fun - let us know how that mashup goes!
Thank you boys! I’m 53 and just starting to dj.... i’ve wanted to scratch since i was 15, but you know life :(
Never too late
Awesome bro.. I started learning how to DJ @ the age of 50
It’s all good💯👌🏿
2 years late, but how you getting on?! Hope you're still enjoying yourself with music.
It's never too late don't let your age define what u can do in life, I wish you the best in your journey of Djing.
Stems are so underrated...I use a REV-7 and I've switched to Virtual DJ because their Stems 2.0 blows everything else out of the water!! It frustrates me that so many DJs aren't even interested in Stems mixing (or even harmonic mixing) but, for me, it really elevates my mixes to another level.
Agreed, it's an amazing feature. we have a course coming on creative use of stems...
I haven't tried commercial tools yet, but heard the Open Source Stemroller is supposedly very good. Can someone who compared it to commercial software verify or say something about it?
Jazzy Jeff is the man!!! NO OTHER DJ can do what he does with the turntables!!! PERIOD…
I love that line, “Don’t make the tool more important than the endgame.”
Agreed!
I just saw this but I have a fourth tip. A strong Hip Hop drum beat under a serious ballad's vocals will make a new genre. It's like "Love Hop or Soft Hop." It's just a lot of fun.
Ha yeah lots of fun!
Just smiled the whole time watching these two wonderful people share ideas and their passion for the music
Thanks for your support Adam, it means a lot!
7:03-7:40 I love doing this too in VirtualDJ. I like to DJ too.
One example I did was Chingy's "Right Thurr" with Toni Braxton's "You Makin' Me High." I took out Toni's vocals and kept the beat and melody and matched it with Chingy's Right Thurr. It sounds really nice together. Another example I did was with Usher "Yeah" mixed with Houston's "I Like That."
Nice one! Gotta love a good mashup :)
The algorithm got me, I thought this was a video about Serato Stems, until Phil mentioned Neural mix being a "recent release."
Ah yes, back then Serato Stems didn't exist!
Jazzy, jazzy, jazzy, jazzy, jazzy, jazzy, JEFF! LOVE THE All I Do TIP. BUYING IT!!! Thank ypu🔥🔥🔥
Glad you liked it 😄Jeff is awesome
In VirtualDJ you can do that live. I love all the posibilities, i will be so much fun when i can use them in front of a crowd...
Won't it just. Let's keep praying! 🙏
Man I'm so jealous you can consider this guy a friend. Being able to pick his brain through your excellent facilitation has taught me so much. With virtually every instrument these greats are always gone by the time we truly appreciate their contributions. I love it! No expert analysis, straight from the horses mouth as we sometimes say..
Glad you found this fun and useful Evan.
Im from the old school and remember wishing I had the accapella or instrumentals of a song. Stems software is a game changer. Im now only limited to my music vocabulary and imagination. Stem software included in the dj program software is endgame in my opinion. wonderful interview! Now I have to wait for rekord box to incorporate stems which would curb my learning curve or just make the switch to Virtual Dj and learn its platform, but at least now I have choices!
Yes it is amazing tech for sure!
Jeff, on thea DJ's point of view part is definitly correct.
Jazzy Jeff it is... such a humble person. Great tips. 👍🏼
Thanks Phil for the video 🙏🏻
thanks Jeff for agreeing to make it with us 🙏
Great interview with Jazzy Jeff, Totally agree, with these stems we can start doing these mixes, live remixing on the fly... Pretty much what we've been wishing for since we were kids!❤
Yes!
Jazzy Jeff the GOAT. This information is awesome to hear. Thank you Phil for the video
We love Jeff here at Digital DJ Tips, he's always such a gentleman and fun to chat to. This is our third interview with him!
I literally just found out about the stem feature and have been experimenting for 2 hours and i found myself doing exactly these 3 things constantly. I'm glad that i somewhat was on the right track, now time to practice
Have fun Fern
Facts he’s amazing just his syncing alone can’t compare how he makes a R&B songs and hip hop joints blend 🙏🏼🙏🏼blessings
He is definitely an open format master!
Your facilitation is so crucial to pulling this great experience out of Jeff I really appreciate that you are getting really specific about picking his brain. We really need that while we still have these great people here to learn from! You'll never see a real Jimi Hendrix tutorial..
You put that really well! Thanks Evan. As a guitarist myself, I’d love to have made that Jimi Hendrix tutorial! - Phil
I love Djay Pro from day one and it just gets better.
It's awesome isn't it :)
I just used the scratch button on the sb3 yesterday. My daughter loves it!
Cool! :)
Wow amazing stuff. I'm learning so much these last few weeks
It looks like stems are coming back. I wonder if Traktor is able to catch up. I remember a video in 2015, where one dj said, Traktors stems was ahead of time. And since 2,3 years suddenly other softwares are integrating it.
The main thing that held NI's STEM.m4a format back was the fact that the label/artist had to separate the stems out and provide 2 different versions of the recording to retailers.
These "AI" driven end-user separations will of course never be as clean as ones pressed from the studio, but the fact that we can now do it for every track already in our collections more than makes up for it!
This was a treat!
THANK YOU!! 😊
You're so welcome!
Loved watching Jazzy Jeff's Birthday Twitch Steam last week, it was beyond awesome.
His reaction to the US Asian Girl He featured doing the insane Mashups set on Vinyl made my Month.
Wish i could remember Her name She was lit AF :)
Yeah his livestreams are grest!
Miles Medina killed it !
Shout out to Phil and the Magnificent Jazzy Jeff! Great video!
And to you Cory :)
Phil is one of the nicest guys ever. Dj Jazzy Jeff is my favorite DJ & a very nice guy as well. Thanks for the short but very informative interview. This is but one of many reasons I follow you guys. Fantastic!!!
Thanks Jimmie!
Great topic! Spinning with stems is the future.
Hi Pri! We agree it most definitely is...
Excellent video with 2 of the greats!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great stuff! Jeff is the GOAT! Amazing DJ and person
We agree Alex 😀
Two legends! This was great!
Glad you enjoyed this!

A big thanks to you both 👍🏾👊🏾
No problem!
I would like to hear Jazzy Jeff's mix on that!
That would sure be good...
Loved that guys. Thanks
Glad you liked enjoyed it Shane :)
Thank Phil
No problem!
started doing this recently 🐐
Great!
Hi Jeff, Phil. Many thanks for this interview. I use Neural Mix for a couple of months now, and so it is the best sound isolator so far. Better than RX8 or Spectra Layers. VDJ2021 is doing a great job as well, but not as fast and user friendly as Neual Mix is. What I do like about VDJ2021 is that you can use it to prototype: What different song isolated stems fit together?
Yes, exactly. you can do the same in Algoriddim's djay Pro AI, of course.
Salute!
Top thx
GENIUS! ...so interesting!!! 😮
He is indeed!
Great content and topic!
Thanks Bret!
By the way. I love your channel 💓
Awesome to hear, thank you!
Amazing tips
Agreed!
Hey Phil and my brother Jazzy Jeff. Great and very informative video. Too bad I use a PC and not a MAC (guess I need to look into getting a MAC 😄). I wonder if Phil has ever thought about asking Jazzy Jeff to be a guest dj for Balcony Beats??? Now THAT would be AWESOME⚡⚡⚡
We'd be honoured to have Jeff spin for us :) And in answer to your question, you can uses stems on Virtual DJ for Windows, and Xtrax Stems is similar to Neural Mix Pro.
Thanks Phil!!
We are thankful to Jeff for doing this with us :)
Jazzy Jeff is the motherfucking man!!!!
That Chaka /Big Daddy Kane was epic
Yes!
JAZZY JEFF!!!
I love this software 😉 i Hope it will be compatible to phase dj 🤩
Thanks for watching :)
Good Vibes
Thanks!
Great timing! Just picked up a 2ndhand Kontrol F1 for an absolute bargain on eBay :)
Awesome, good work Sapio.
@@digitaldjtips Thanks! Just gotta find Stem Creator software now. NI seem to have killed the original link
@@sapiotone That's worrying.
Can we please get a windows version of Neural mix pro please.
You’ll have to ask Algoriddim about that!
This is great 🙂
Which is better, VDJ or Nueral, at this task?
djay Pro AI and Virtual DJ both do essentially the same job when it comes to stems. Your decision should more be swayed by what DJ platform you'd like to use out of the two. That said, Neural Mix Pro is something different - it is not DJ software, rather it extracts stems ahead of time. It has the edge on its most well-known competitor (Xtrax Stems) because of its pitch, tempo and loop functions, and its rich export options.
@@digitaldjtips - Thanks for your comprehensive answer🙂
@@stuungar3390 You're welcome Stu!
maybe future music production will give way on producing multi trak single music
best dj in the world
You are not alone in thinking that!
Jazzy Jeff!! 🔥❤️🇲🇽❤️🔥
😎
my mind Is blown
RIP X BABY.
Virtual dj can use stems!!!
Yes George, we mention it in the video 😀
JJ and Will Smith. The music combo we aspire to be as cool as.
JJ and Phil Morse coming in at a close second.
Lol
First off I would like to say great video But if you listen to Jazzy Jeff sessions when he go live He doesn't sound like he's using Virtual DJ Or should I say virtual DJ doesn't sound like that new software
He uses Neural Mix Pro to prepare stems that he then plays in his usual DJ software.
Have you tried izotope RX 8 for extracting a Capella
Yes, it does a good job, but it is slow. Sometime too sharp and not as user friendly as Neural Mix. However Neural Mix only runs on MacOS. You can also have a look at VDJ2021, which is free of charge as long as you use it without a controller. With VDJ2021, the trick is to play with the STEM buttons and RECORD the output to a file. It take more time than Neural Mix Pro. For prototyping VDJ2021 is handy
Thanks for sharing your thoughts MAUS :)
Any idea if/when it'll be available on Windows?
No, but you can use Xtrax Stems on Windows, and Virtual DJ.
@@digitaldjtips Cool, will check that out.
I wish I could hit the like button, a lot more.
Thanks Jason!
3:45 "If you're not exploiting it for financial gain, if you're just using it as a DJ tool"...I hate to be that guy but we're all exploiting it for financial gain, as DJs.
It's nice separating stems but to me it still sounds like crap. I'm using Vdj and most stuff sounds filtered and missing the fidelity.
Yeah it's certainly not high fidelity audio, a tonne of fun though
I hate the when the song first comes on and they start singing or rapping the god for stems
1st one here
Thanks for watching!
@4:05 Phil, stop telling him that story! He got literally thrown out of the house by another (Uncle) Phil for scratching his record!
Lol :)
