  • For this short video I cover the intro to the Halo theme song from Combat Evolved through Infinite using only a ZOOM R20. I created synth tracks with stock R20 sounds and entered all the notes through the touchscreen to see if I could use this multitrack recorder as an instrument. It kinda works! (although I don't recommend it)
Be sure to check out my tutorial video to see how it's done...posting soon!

I like this direction of development. The "All in one" portable studios (inkluding soundsource/built in instrument) outside the MPC/iMaschine+ world hasn't developed the last 15 years since the Roland MW8000/8800 series.
More beatbox/soundmodule like things like Roland MC101/707 and verselab exist but whit crappy standalone editing/screens.
I hope Zoom and others keep develop even better big brothers to this, with a proper synthengine/sampler and - come on all developers... incorporate a hdmi-port to be able to connect a bigger screen.

I think it's going to be awhile before we see an HDMI port on these types of multitrack recorders. However, there is supposed to be a Bluetooth app to connect to an iOS device, like an iPad, which would provide a more useful screen. They haven't released it yet.
I think the R20 represents Zoom's middle of the road multitracker. With the H series I'm not sure Zoom will make a succesor to the R8. However, depending on how well the R20 does I could see them making an "R30" that upgrades the R24 and hopefully offers more synth and groovebox options than the R20 currently does. It's entirely possible Zoom even updates the R20 to have more capabilities in this direction via firmware updates...let's see what happens...

Not bad! It's actually a pretty handy feature. Good work. I can tell it may be a cumbersome way to make music, but you did it! Good effort too!

Thanks! I definitely don't recommend it as a way to create an entire song, but I just wanted to show what's possible with the device...in theory.

That sounds very nice. I have to wait for 4 or 5 weeks when I can get a Zoom R 20. I like what you do with this multitrack recorder. I like the animation as well :-)
