As one who witnessed the rise of The Cars firsthand, my brother was the drummer, I admit to not taking to Ric at first, it wasn't till years later when I saw him and Paulina and their kids and was surprised at how down to earth she was and how married life with her seemed to suit him, thanks for all the great music and for The Cars being a big part of my life.
Paul Robinson it takes a different person to make unique different amazing music.
@Joe Materese It drives me crazy when people refer to David's drumming as minimalistic. When listening to the songs from the demo tapes(reels), there is so much more to his drumming.
The cues to other band mates, the god fills are unique, the changes in tempo and timing.....all there to tell everyone where they are in the song. His responsibilities were endless.
That, and his love/flair for the groups cover artwork.
I miss it all.
@@BrimHawk - You know who else could be described as "minimalistic"? Charlie Watts (Stones), Ringo (you know), Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), ... The list of "minimalistic" drum gods could go on forever. Good company.
BrimHawk Robinson was Mozart with sticks . Ringo was Ringo , man . You know ? Try walking a mile in a ramones leather jacket , or Roy Orb's THICK sunG's .
Paul Robinson your David is a wonderful musician, as I’m sure I don’t need to tell you. I reviewed Candy-O for Trouser Press and remember specifically calling out his wonderful work.
Whenever Stephen gets emotional, I can feel it.
Same, there’s been a couple times where he’s gotten emotional and I’ve started tearing up. I’m so glad he has this show, no one can replace Carson, but he’s amazing. With all the darkness in the world he does a great job shining. So smart and great at being informative while still keeping it light and funny, but also knowing when to hit a more serious note and keep it respectful.
He’ll be crying again in 2020 when trump wins a second term......
@@ericamcghie8476 Colbert is a terrible interviewer, his stand up monolog sucks and every joke he makes is about trump.. They're not even really jokes, it's like a personal vendetta he has against the guy. worst talk show host on television in history by far
@@collin355 lol ok then. Like this isn’t screaming, “I only get validation by goading people on the internet to fight me.”
@@ericamcghie8476 I gave my opinion on him..the guys terrible..sounds like you're the one trying to goad..nice try
Naturally, Colbert has an elegant story to commemorate the passing of Ric Ocasek, complete with a funny video to close it out. RIP Ric Ocasek (and thanks for the heartfelt memory...).
@Bob Trenwith Do'h - I even looked it up. Damn you autocorrect!
@Bob Trenwith did you have to ruin a comment by being a grammar nazi?
Bob Trenwith grammar nazi you’re just what we needed
Ric Ocasek put together perhaps the MOST contemporary band in the history of music with The Cars. They definitely had an original sound. ...just a few notes and you KNEW it was The Cars. I will miss them greatly. RIP. Ben Orr & Ric Ocasek 🙏🌟🎸🎹🎶💫
I’m happy Stephen got to meet and work with his hero
zizinnnn ... One time when Ric was working with Andy Warhol , He was asked , " Did you ever think , when you started out , that one day , you would be working with Andy Warhol ? "
Ric looked at him ...seriously , he said , " Yes . "
That was beatiful Stephen! Respect! R.I.P Ric Ocasek! 🙏🕯🔩
Rip Rick O ..
Sure was. I can tell Stephen was shocked and saddened by the news. He could not believe it. I love the way he had ended. Let's go. That was one of The Cars' many hits, which I love beside Drive.
Divine Rebel for Love Oh for godness sake! Take your meds pet!
@Divine Rebel for Love what are you doing here? Spreading message that has nothing to do with Ric Ocasek?
I love that Stephen’s heros, from Tolkien to Ric Ocasek ... are my heroes.
I’m saddened by the loss of Ric, and Ben all those years ago...but I’m happy Ric is getting the recognition he so richly deserves. They pioneered the new wave genre. Ahead of the times by 4-5 years. Some classic songs. RIP Ric.
Rest in Peace Ric Ocasic. We loved The Cars back in the day. Still do.
Ocasek
@@brockalbert5111 ouch.
@@brockalbert5111 Thanks!
Didn't love them or him enough to spell his name correctly; rolls eyes!!
One of the all time greats. And now that I'm 73 I say way too young to die. Thank you Stephen for memory.
Thank you Steve Colbert for giving Rick Ocasek the homage to a very talented individual and the great music he brought on to the world.
Funny enough, when I heard that Ric had passed away my first thought was of his ‘appearance’ on The Colbert Report, when Stephen was interviewing Paulina Poritzkova and Ric was standing just off stage staring daggers into Stephen. Glad to see Stephen had such fond memories of him. 💕
That was a beautiful thing to witness. My heart hurts, last weekend was a devastating few days. Eddie Money on Friday and Ric Ocasec on Sunday. Rock and roll took a real hit. The Cars were a breath of fresh air in a smoggy time in music. Rock, New Wave, Disco, Metal groups fighting for recognition and relevance and there were some real hit and miss options. The Cars fusion of synthesizer New Wave, and old school rock combined with awesome vocals stood out from the many. Ric, thank you for The Cars and all the hits, they remain a mainstay in my music catalogue. Rest well. Peace out.
Ric Ocasek joined Ben Orr. They are together again. RIP both legends.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WE GO ANYWHERE WHEN WE PASS ?????? RIP RIC
It's a matter of believe.
@shaking like tremolo You mean your ignorance towards people who believe in something?
The cars have always been my favourite band; I need only hear the opening cord of a song and I am transported back to a special moment in my youth. RIP Rick.
Misspelling the lead guy of your "favorite" band says b.s.
@@lobitome thats how we spell in new zealand
Heartbeat City (the album) was such a fundamental part of my 80's music experience. I don't know how many times I watched You Might Think on MTV. I enjoy every song on the album. Thanks, Ric!
The interview with Ric and Stephen was memorable. I love it when his enthusiasm bubbles over. Ric could handle it...so cool and down to earth. An icon. 🚘
Stephen is class on top of class, and seemingly effortlessly so.
'Cause it is genuine.
I loved The Cars, but Stephen went into and graduated from High School with their music. Losing the soundtrack to your life sucks. We don't know them, but they are a part of our lives.
The Cars have been one of my favourite bands since 1978, when their self-titled album came out. I'm forever grateful for the music they created and shared. RIP Rick
RIP Ric Ocasek
Let them leave you up in the air
Let them brush your Rock & Roll hair
That's my favorite Cars tune. RIP Ric
I'm Stephen's age and sometimes I wonder.. Damn! I'm as old as Stephen Frikken Colbert!!! I first saw The Cars on some New Years' Eve show and they were completely brand new and fresh and their song's kicked serious ass and I loved their music. They were a big part of the soundtrack of my high school years and for years after. I'll remember when my dad came up and told me his new favorite song of all-time was "Drive". Here's a guy who graduated in '58 and listened to that old-time rock n roll. Dad's still around and "Drive" is still his favorite song and The Cars were a magical band.
Great band
Didn't realise how old he was
Great music has no age
Who's gonna drive you home now??!! Rip, Master!
God and Ben🤗😇
crazy thing is Ric never owned a car
And I say... Let's go!
Rest In Peace Ric. You were awesome. Loved the Cars and sill do. Play it LOUD people!!!
I love Ric Ocasek's music, primarily with The Cars but also solo works. The Cars music was a major influence on me and helped me cope during difficult times. Peace to you, Mr. Ocasek...
“Ric was recuperating very well after surgery,” the Ocasek family wrote on Instagram. “Our two sons, Jonathan and Oliver, and I were making sure he was comfortable, ordering food and watching TV together. I found him still asleep when bringing him his Sunday morning coffee. I touched his cheek to rouse him. It was then I realized that during the night he had peacefully passed on.” He had heart surgery according to the latest reports.
Thanks for posting this!
Thank you for posting this. Very touching
LOVED their music. R.I.P Rick.❤❤❤
" recuperating very well".....evidently NOT. glad it was peaceful though.
So sad. That person didn't expect that.
Those first four albums were such classic lessons in minimalist rock done really well.
Your tributes to those who have left us are always so real and from the truth-speaking heart.
Wow, he really knows how to make it sound okay when he cries inside, knowing that another friend is lost forever.
what a lovely and sweet memorium. Rip Rick
The Cars had a sound that was original. They melded pop, new wave, and rock in a way that made you sit up and take notice when their music first came out. Very polished and yet also very raw. Unique combination. R.I.P.
One of the greatest pop songwriters of all time!
I had just moved to NY when I was 18 and the first celebrity I saw was Ric Ocasek. Someone called his name out and he turned around, smiled and waved.
It's already sad that we lost Benjamin Orr so early, now Ric is gone as well and the Cars are no more. But the memory lives on. RIP.
RIP Ric. Your music seen me through a lot of rough times. Thank you. You were just what I needed.
Like Stephen said, "The Cars" were the soundtrack of my teenage years...and the world has lost a musical talent with few equals.
Condolences to Ric's family, friends and millions of fans (including myself). 🌹
A HUGE Void Opened. We Lost Someone that moved our society. He Changed Life on Earth.
and now he's gone.
Let the good times roll in heaven now. RIP, Ric.
@shaking like tremolo. Don’t take it literally, it’s just my way of saying goodbye.
The Cars was the music of my youth and will be with me *_forever._* And thank you, Colbert, for honouring such a legendary musician.
What a genuine and simple tribute. Thank you
Just hearing him say The Cars and Elvis Costello in the same sentence makes me like this guy.
Oh man, how sad! I used to see him around Gramercy all the time!
RIP Ric!
The man was magic.
Thanks for the blessing of Ric Ocasek.
I always liked Touch and go. RIP
Boston lost another one of its greats. I'm a proud Bostonian and this one is bummin me much like Leonard Nimoy's passing. 😥 Much thanks to Stephen Colbert for acknowledging Ric Ocasek. 👏👏👏
@Alan Brown IDK that! Thanks for correction.
Well, Boston recording & band formation.
First concert I’d ever gone to. Still remember every thing about it. It was the best
A heartfelt tribute. Well deserved.
"Moving in Stereo" and "All Mixed Up"; you had to listen to them as one. Great band great album. Sorry to hear of Ric's passing.
Aw man. First Eddy Money and now Rick Ocasek. What a blow. The Cars were the soundtrack to many people's youth. RIP.
RIP brother and thanks for the great music.
Ric we love you. We celebrate your life.
RIP ric wow, I dont remember 2006 TVs image quality looking so bad
@@adpirtle: Not nearly as much of a nightmare as the picture quality of UA-cam videos in 2006!
Stephen's tie was also...well, not good. Lol
it's not only that, I think. Theres is a thing with data encoding standards changes (like going from analog to digital, satellite to cable, codecs and all) which makes not so old footage distort greatly when put on new platforms. I think that's what @Max alluded to. RIP Ric (although being french and in my 30s I don't think I knew his music too well). .
May he rest in peace.
R.I.P. BENJAMIN ORR
R.I.P. RIC OCASEK
ROCK IN PEACE BROTHERS ✌
Rest in peace. Ric, you really were "Magic"! ♥️
Rest in peace Ric. You were my hero too. Just what I needed was my favorite cars song.
Wonderful story. Colbert is the real deal.
I'll never forget his rich lyrics, Drive was my favorite. Drive onto the afterlife and stay cool.
One of the best! The Cars! So many memories surface when I hear their music❤
Everytime Stephen pays a tribute or rememberance to a fallen celebrity/idol, the emotions well up inside and I burst into tears. Stephen is brilliant, wholesome, and true.
Could feel Stephan's pain.
There was one episode of the old show, where his wife hit on him, and he growled at Colbert in the background. It was awesome, a lot of fun for an awesome rocker!
Just what I needed.
Thank you Colbert. Just hearing the news of Rick’s death brings tears to my eyes. Along with Elvis Costello, I want The Cars to be played at my funeral
my first LP ever, Greatest Hits, great music and memories, RIP
I've always loved The Cars. Thanks so much to this whole group for years of great entertainment!
The cars records spun all day long in my house growing up love playing moving in stereo on my tele R.I.P Ric your music lives in our hearts forever
Ric & Ben. Moving in stereo. God bless you men.
"Let's Go" was the anthem of my youth. RIP Ric
Such great passion!!!
RIP Rick 🙏🏻
That was nice. I loved the Cars - saw them in concert way back when. R.I.P. Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr.
Emotion to motion is one if the greatest ballads in pop rock imo.
The very first band I ever remember hearing. I feel like they shaped my musical taste in every single way.
my first memories of the Cars was back in the early 80's when my friend got his 1st car and it had a booming stereo. the best sounding cassette he had was the Cars and we cranked it on repeat for as long as i can remember. good times.
Nice one Stephen, Ric was a real legend
He also produced Weezer’s Blue album by the way
Noize Tank And Green album
I always thought Weezer sounded kind of like the Cars. Well that explains it.
@@deathmetalpotato And Everything Will Be Alright In The End (and he has a posthumous appearance on Van Weezer)
I remember seeing him all the time on W.8th St. in the Village with his lovely then wife Paulina Poreskova!!! The were so kind and laid back!!! 👏👏👏🙏🏻R.O. 💝
The dude produced Bad Brains and Guided By Voices too. Amazing guy. gonna be missed.
RIP Rick Ocasek great music
Exactly my era too 1978 going into 10th grade Candy-O on the a.m. dial blew me away
Oh man The Cars were part of the soundtrack of my youth. Ric you will be missed.
Loved The Cars. RIP Rick. ❤️
Thank you stephen for paying tribute to ric ocasek ! I grew up with his 🎵 music
Vale Ric Ocasek. So Sad. 😢😢
I loved The Cars !
Such great, fun music !! 😎🎶
the first time i heard The Cars, it was the song "You Might Think". Ever since, i am hooked! What a great pop band! they represent the 80's pop culture to me.. :)
Actually my first cassette. Awsome music.
Same here - I actually don’t remember which one was my first, The Cars or Centerfield by John Fogerty. Either way, they’re both incredibly prized possessions...
The Cars - Drive, always makes me cry about Ethiopia.
Well done Mr Colbert!
I couldn't believe it when I heard this. I was exposed to the cars when MTV exploded, and they became part of the soundtrack of my youth in the early to mid 80's. Can't believe that Ric Ocasek was 75 years old. Truly an innovator in pop music and sad to see him gone. Great tribute, Stephen. And who are the 93 f-----g people who disliked this?
I will always love the music of the Cars.
Sorry for your loss Stephen and friends and family of Ric
A true musical genius. A favorite of mine for years. Who could ever forget, " Who's gonna take you home tonight"?
@Alan Brown
Thanks Alan. I had forgotten and you helped bring all back. Ric's music had impact on my life. Appreciate your response.
August 1978, the best concert in my life. The Cars and the late Eddie Money, amongst other notables.
Fleetwood Mac headlined the festival series, The World Series Of Rock at the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium on August 26, 1978. Also on this amazing all day bill was Bob Welch, Todd Rundgren & Utopia, The Cars and Eddie Money.
Sweet Show! Reminds me of the Bay Area's Day On The Green back in the late 70s, held in Oakland
@Alan Brown , cool I grew up in Bedford. I remember seeing Joe Walsh at Chippewa Lake in the early 70s.
Ric ocasek was awesome RIP Buddy!
My 16 year old son listens to a wide range of music. The other day I asked him if he liked the cars he said he didn’t know them. I sent him a few cars suggestions. He was a instant fan and how could he not be they’re the fucking cars!! Another legend gone. RIP Rick
Thank you. I was 16 and wore out that Cars cassette driving my ‘69 olds everywhere. Just to hear it over and over
Bless you for paying tribute, Stephen.
Thank you.
Not just ridiculously funny, Monsieur Stephen Colbert has taste!
Saw them in Montreal in the late 70s.
Thank you for this commemoration.
