i just want to explain once and for all, that i am not showing you the "average" cost of living in this video, but rather a bit more comfortable level of living. I would never live in a $500 condo with cockroaches and an open shower, this is why i would rather "overpay" for my own comfort.

What?! I've lived in Shanghai in recent years in about $700 apartment on Middle Huaihai Road and it was so much better than this apartment (and even if the prices are higher now, it could be around $1,000 maximum). And NO, there were no cockroaches and open shower or whatever. Also, you could rent an entire house with a yard with that $3,000 on French Concession in Shanghai. Sorry to tell you, but as some born in Hong Kong and Grew up in beijing and currently living in SanliTun, I must tell you, you are still most certainly overpaying for your condo. 3000 usd or around 21000 rmb will almost get you a whole fully renovated Si He Yuan(basically a beijing style high end villa, almost because the good ones do cost a few thousand yuan more than 21k), fully furnished. If you want a nice newer apartment with renovation and furnishing, this price will get you a 130+ m2 high end condo in prime locations. And condotels (like the one you staying) and the worst way to stay in a place long term, its usually for people who will be living in a city long enough for not wanting to pay day by day at a hotel, but not long enough for a full 6 month or 1 year contract.

I lived for 5 years and my wife is Chinese, so I can say she is highly exaggerating about trash apartments and her high level cost apartment. For 3k $ you can buy 3 apartments for 20 years loan. I was thinking to buy there and did some research but changed my mind.

    • @adgurl01

Agreed. She is greatly exaggerating. I lived in Shanghai for four years before I moved to a smaller city. My rent was the equivalent of US$1100. It was a small studio apartment in the middle of the FCC. So a very nice neighborhood and beautiful (yet tiny) apartment in an elevator building with a beautiful view. You don’t have to spend $3000 on an apartment in Shanghai that’s just what she wanted. Now I’m living in a smaller city (3.5 hours drive from Shanghai)and I spend the equivalent of US$500 per month. Rent in a serviced apartment like this. It is often the choice of business people who only stay for a month or two. So this is definitely the most expensive option. More realistically, a similarly sized 45-square-foot house across the street from this location would cost about $1,500 a month. Let's forget about Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, any provincial capital in China has pretty good living conditions. When I heard her say that maybe only 1% of Chinese households have a bathtub... I feel so funny, China is not India.

if the total move in cost+deposit is higher than the 4months rent you thought you were to pay for then you know something was wrong with the lease agreement.

Quite sure those expats who are saying it is cheap simply have normal standards and aren't as demanding. The vast majority of people on this planet live on the outskirts of cities. City center prices are absurd almost everywhere in the world. By the way if the bathroom is so horrible you can usually just fix it up for moderate cost.
Some advice: Unless your income is so high that you can save about as much as you pay for rent don't be so demanding...

Apologies, but this is not the case here. I live in the center of Beijing (the neighborhood is Dongcheng) and pay the equivalent of $1000-1050 USD. She lives in the hip area of Beijing where foreigners go to play and the CBD is south and in the middle of the two of us.
I have an acquaintance living in an identical serviced apartment in her neighborhood who pays 11,000 rmb (roughly half 3K USD). This young woman is simply being taken advantage of/prefers to live at a Hyatt Hotel, which is absolutely her right. But it is NOT because central Beijing is insanely expensive.

To share, I have been a real estate agent in Las Vegas for 32 years. The mortgage payment at 2.87% interest, and association fees, as I live in a gated community total $1788. With landscape, sewer and trash, that would be another $80 per month, or that my complete payment for everything for a nearly 2000 square foot home with 3 bedrooms, an office, and a reasonably large backyard would be about $1868 per month. I paid $300,000 for this home, and when I finish the renovations in the next few months will be into it for about $345,000, and likely in three years or so it is worth about $525,000.
Yes, this isn't Beijing, but it is pretty similar to Palm Springs, and it is amazing as within one mile there are three major grocery stores, movie theaters, and if you expand the radius to two miles, maybe 100 different restaurants. If your travels ever take you to Las Vegas, and you are interested in some real estate or economic data, do let me know.
I was surprised to hear that only 1% of homes in China have bathtubs, as pretty close to 100% of the homes in the US do. Also, I don't think I could handle that squat toilet. Good wishes for you.

If I were going to pay $3000 USD I’d go back to my Centennial Hills condo! It’s up to like $2K now with utilities (I checked)… so please don’t believe everything you see online 😅. This woman is paying the equivalent of someone in Vegas at one of the Aria serviced apartments.

I hope that things are well for you in Beijing, and my only concern (which you might be able to correct, is with air quality, albeit as you know we have had many days in Vegas with smoke from California fires).
I am glad to hear you have a regular toilet, and that some of the content or perspective on this video is not quite as portrayed.
As you observed, housing here dramatically increased, with interest rates approximately tripling in less than 3 years.
Being in real estate since 1991, I am aware of the insane high rents and I feel terribly for working people just trying to be able to afford a condo or apartment, while purchasing a basic home here that was built within the last 30 years likely has payments in the $3300 range, when just a few years ago, as with me payments would have been about half of that.
Thank you for writing and I wish you the very best in Beijing.

@axoloneidolon4702 I think it depends on if she needs to even do that. How popular is her modeling in China. If she's getting a lot of work as a model then she doesn't need to give her body away to men. Generally women only start doing that because they need more money. Think of the average Only F person.. well these women normally start out in life poor and having normal jobs where they are barely getting by and making ends meet. Then they start selling their bodies and all of a sudden they can afford whatever for the first time in their lives. So that's how most women and men get caught up in selling their own bodies for se× or corn. She was already a model and already making money off actual fashion. She could also lose work in the fashion industry if she gets caught doing se× work. China doesn't mess around. You're either one or the other in places like China, Korea and especially Japan. So yeah she probably is just a fashion model. She isn't on Only F or selling herself in that way. Just because I don't sell myself doesn't mean I'm uneducated and don't understand the world. I've traveled all over the world and I read constantly.

China is the best. The cost of apts is cheaper and cleaner and safer in many amazing Chinese cities. This married couple have a lovely apt for only $800.00 with two bedrooms in China and this cost of less than $1,500 per month is the norm. The cost of monthly rent is $2500 in Canada and USA is worst for ripoff apartments and high cost of living.

Also, many international school provide you with either a house or housing allowance. Most of the housing that the school offers are decent, close to the school.
If the school gives you a housing allowance of 10k a month, that is also a decent amount as many locals in 1st tier can't even earn 8k with the current economy. Most of my co workers housing is around 8-12k rmb. Yes, if they spend over the 10k, then they pay out of pocket the difference and they are happy too, an extra 2k a month, for a better housing/location, etc, they are willing.
If your rent is 3000 USD = 21,000 rmb? If that is true, that is like a 5 star building.
If you think it is expensive, one can always go to a 4th tier city. The salary may not be as high, but so is rent.
If you can afford the 3k USD rent in a 1st tier city, then you must be making 6 fig usd after taxes.
And if your not a teacher, most jobs do provide housing allowance to expat.
Canada goose is expenive in China, must be at least 7000 rmb. It is no wonder you dont have any saving. You seem to live a very luxury life. Money in and then money out?

    • @abbyabroad
      @abbyabroad Рік тому +1

Hi! I live in Beijing too and earned around 20,000 rmb when I first came in 2014. The average income for local citizens is around 13,000 rmb. You can find a decent small apartment for 6-8,000 rmb or a fancy luxe one (nicer than hers, with my apologies) for 10-14,000 (maxing you out at $2,000 USD. Also the 28,000 rmb that she said she got robbed is ~4,000 USD, not 5,000 like she said, so her conversion might be off).
TL, DR: you can survive on 12-16K rmb if you don’t have a lot of debt in your home country. You can live comfortably for $16K+. Licensed teachers earn 26-40,000 rmb a month after taxes based on experience. Fwiw

Judging from the scene outside the window, you live in a serviced apartment near Guanghua Road in the East Third Ring Road of Beijing. This is the most expensive place in Beijing’s CBD. Don’t know how many square meters your apartment is? According to today's exchange rate, 3,000 US dollars is about 21,500 RMB. Maybe because you are a foreigner, I feel that the price of the house you rent is a little expensive. If it were rented by a Chinese who is good at bargaining, I would estimate it to be between 15,000 and 20,000. If you are looking for an ordinary residence with exquisite decoration, you can rent a very good one for 12,000-15,000 RMB, which is very comfortable for one person to live in.

@@maxirona

But she forgot that she lives in a probably 5-star service apartment in a tier one city, indeed the center of the capital city, without comparing to other areas of the city and other provinces of the country. Simple search online we could find out that the rental costs of the apartment with the same standard as hers could be way more expensive than $3k in other international metropolis.
