China in Deflation According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January 2024 fell by 0.8% year-on-year, a decline much larger than expected. This marks the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline and the largest monthly decline since 2009. The Producer Price Index (PPI) also experienced a year-on-year decrease as businesses further lowered factory prices in search of buyers for their products. PPI has seen monthly declines throughout last year (2023). There's a saying in economics that if inflation is likened to a severe cold, then deflation is akin to cancer. When things were supposed to get more expensive, they are now being discounted. If everything is discounted, who will make purchases? With reduced purchasing, the economy naturally contracts. As the economy contracts, layoffs follow, leading to people losing their incomes. Without income, there's no consumption, leading to a backlog of products, further exacerbating deflation. Thus, a vicious cycle ensues. Over the past six months, housing prices have been declining, car prices are down, and even pork prices have been lingering at low levels. To put it simply, deflation means people hoard money in banks because of fears about future uncertainty, thus refraining from spending. According to data from the People's Bank of China, in 2022, total renminbi deposits increased by 26.26 trillion yuan for the whole year, a year-on-year increase of 6.59 trillion yuan, with household deposits increasing by 17.84 trillion yuan. This indicates that people's inclination to save is far greater than their inclination to consume.

Hi Lizzy, it looks that the rents have come down. In 2003 I was paying 800 USD per month plus the utility bill, plus sat TV in Shanghai Pudong, close to Century park. It was brand new and had 2 bedrooms, 2 spacious balconies, living room, dining room, and enormous kitchen ( I looked 3 months for that ) and a large bathroom with shower and washmachine. There was also a lift. It was in walking distance of the new Maglev station in Pudong. There was also a carrefour, decathlon and a Brico center. So I am surprised that the rent is so low now. Good for you !
1, Lizzy is living in Kunming, Yunnan Province. And I believe she is not living in a very center area. The rent is much lower there than Pudong, Shanghai. 2, I think I know which compound you had lived in.😁 It costed about RMB 6000~7000 to rent a 3 bedroom apartment there in 2010. I guess the USD 800 you had paid in 2003 was a little bit higher than the normal market level because you are a foreigner or the apartment is bigger or had better condition than others.
Rents in Shanghai and the immediate area have increased since 2003, it would be difficult to find that price these days, that's why I moved to a city 38 minutes away by high speed train and pay 2200 rmb a month for 3 beds and 2 baths.

In sharp contrast, most Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck. It's getting more and more difficult to save money in the US, in other word, you'll never be able to retire, you have to work until you die.
@@FUZASHIII- there is little to no manufacturing in the US. Jobs went to China. For those who don’t have a technical job, most work in the service industry. With the cost of living in the US people are definitely struggling. Inflation is at a peak as well. Fuel for vehicles in the Midwest is on average $3.50-4.00/per gallon. Groceries are high, interest rates for homes are high. So it’s not just obese people. There are many struggling.
When I saw the title of this video I was like "Wow 300 RMB per month that's sooooo cheap, too cheap to believe", then I realized it's probably USD🤣. It is definitely a good deal and a very nice living environment👍🏻 In HK, rents are crazy, I'm currently sharing a 2-bedroom apartment (around 50㎡ which is already considered big for 2 people here) with my roommate, and we pay about USD 2500 per month plus other costs, e.g. gas, electricity, internet...very convenient neighborhood with amazing sea view though, it's just every time when I returned from hometown (a small town in Zhejiang Province) after the CNY holiday, will always feel "it's just too small" at the moment when I opened the door...I think as a small-town girl I will go back home for retirement in the end, just for a more chilled life with less financial pressure, and closer to my parents assuming I'm still single then :)
In Nigeria, we pay annually or bi-annually. Like you, I like this system because we don't have to worry about rent for at least a year once that has been sorted. Gives you peace of mind whenever there is an emergency because you know that no matter what, you have a place to call home.
I live in GZ CBD and I pay 6,400/month for a 97eqm 2 bedroom centrally located. I think it is fine so long as you can afford it. I also pay 5,500 for a maid that come clean and cook. Monthly expenses around Rmb20k.

Hi Lizzie, That’s a dream apartment for almost anywhere in the world, in terms of price, safety, availability of services and so on. Thanks for sharing. Would it be possible to rent such an apartment short term? It’ll be nice to be able to spend a couple of months in Kunming and get to travel around Yunnan.
¥2200 RMB (or $300 USD) per month for a 2-bedroom apartment. Though you shared the apartment with another person, but that is still not bad at all, given that you only paid $300 USD per month. When it comes to cost of living, people spend the bulk of their money on housing, i.e., rent, mortgage payment. Here are some details about cost of living in China and the U.S. *United States* : According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, in the fourth quarter of 2023, the average American earned $4,949 USD per month. At the same time, the national average monthly rent is $1,372. So, on average, Americans spent 35% of their earnings on rent. *China* : In 2023, the average salary in China was ¥29,400 per month. At the same time, average rent for a shared apartment in Tier 1 city like Beijing or Shanghai was ¥2,500 to ¥3,500. For people who wanted to occupy a studio without sharing, the rent was about ¥4,000 per month. So, on average, the Chinese spent 8.5% to 12% for a shared apartment and 13.6% for an independent studio -- in Tier 1 cities like Beijing or Shanghai. Americans had to spend more than one-third of their monthly earnings on rent, whereas the Chinese spent less than 14% of their monthly salaries for the same purpose. The difference in the numbers tells people how expensive cost of living in the U.S. is: people barely make enough to have a roof over their head and pay for other unavoidable expenses at the same time. It is not a surprise there are so many homeless people in the U.S., because people simply are NOT making enough! There is no way Americans earning minimum wage could afford an apartment that cost as much as their entire pay check. Great content! It is nice to see you enjoying life in China. The 2-bedroom apartment you live in is super nice. Thanks for showing us your living space. Kind regards from California.
Hi Lizzy: Thank you for sharing your thoughts private space to us! Where do you first start looking for apartments? Real Estate agents? Would you share about health insurance? Can foreigners buy health insurance? How much will it cost per month? What are the coverages such hospital & doctor visits? Please kindly share this medical insurance information. Thank you!
Ever been to Compton CA? Was only able to find a one bedroom for $1000USD/mo. Not too comfortable sharing kitchen and bathroom with twelve other roommates 😢 don't think you'd care for my view though 🤣 but who can complain enjoying such a large house during Pandemic 🤔
In my country the rental price is even cheaper than that. But for a studio type apartment. Meanwhile, what you rented was a 2 bedroom apartment, right? But I think your apartment is quite cheap to rent for a 2 room apartment.
Its about the same size as i rent here in Norway, only i pay around 900 dollar, and it is in a small town with around 100 000 people, if it for example was in Oslo i would pay twice for the same.
4:49 "you have yards in foreign countries"... NO, most people are living in apartments, condos, townhouses... NO YARDS! do a video shows the common area around the building - it is like a big yard or like a park.
What I would like to know is how much the people make per month that pay this amount. You are basing on cheap rent based on your American nor Canadian or English salary. What is the average salary in China?

I like your nice apartment! Especially price for this!))
Thank you! 😃 glad you enjoyed the tour
If you buy a good quality coffee then black with no sugar is the best way to appreciate the flavor

My niece was 😮paying 1,299.00 for renting an apartment 1 bedroom and I think it was a lot of money. If you are happy there stay there I agree with you totally why would you live somewhere else. ❤
I enjoyed it❤you made a very nice video,I love your apartment views it is beautiful❤❤❤❤
Beautiful apartment,Thank you for sharing
It's true when you said why you need to move out of China when you have everything here and you love every minute of your life now.
In USA, you pay $300 and up for a storage container.
Awesome 🤩 thanks for sharing 👏👏👏greetings from Hong Kong 😁
In sharp contrast, most Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck. It's getting more and more difficult to save money in the US, in other word, you'll never be able to retire, you have to work until you die.
*In sharp contrast*. Now show us the sharp contrast of average salaries in China compared to US.
@@FUZASHIII very hard to measure
@@FUZASHIII that means absolutely F all , when over 150 million Americans are struggling to feed themselves
@@Auzzzie82 every second American struggling to feed themselves? Are you talking about the obese ones ? 💀
👍🏿 Stunning 👍🏿
Thank you! 🤗
When I saw the title of this video I was like "Wow 300 RMB per month that's sooooo cheap, too cheap to believe", then I realized it's probably USD🤣. It is definitely a good deal and a very nice living environment👍🏻
In HK, rents are crazy, I'm currently sharing a 2-bedroom apartment (around 50㎡ which is already considered big for 2 people here) with my roommate, and we pay about USD 2500 per month plus other costs, e.g. gas, electricity, internet...very convenient neighborhood with amazing sea view though, it's just every time when I returned from hometown (a small town in Zhejiang Province) after the CNY holiday, will always feel "it's just too small" at the moment when I opened the door...I think as a small-town girl I will go back home for retirement in the end, just for a more chilled life with less financial pressure, and closer to my parents assuming I'm still single then :)
That is ridiculous!! I heard its soo expensive in HK! wow
Awesome and comfortable living !
Nice apartment, you are so lucky.
Hi Lizzy, you are very lucky to live in such a nice apartment. Maybe you can add a warning at the beginning of the video.
"Be careful when you live outside China. You might become very envious." 😅😂
I live in Singapore CBD. My room with a shared bathroom is close to RMB 8,000 a month!
In Huizhou One hr from Shenzhen I m a beach front condos one bedroom only 52 sm with balcony brand new only 2400 RMB a month partly furnished so many empty condo unsold price are dropping.
我就是惠州人,我住市区,我也打算去惠东买一套公寓。
At least you don't feel the pain of inflation.
Thankfully 😅
Actually China has a deflation right now, comparing to the price hikes in the US
@@yuliu8875 From what I have read or heard , more precisely, I believe you are talking about deflation for real estate market. The GDP of China is at a pace of 5% growth for 2024, signaling a cherry outlook of the whole economy.
If you believe official figures... 😂😂😂
@@fdm2155 I believe IMF and other international organization's estimates. If they are the official figures you referred to, yes, I do trust they have no reason to fudge the figures at the price of their own reputation.
I drink black coffee nowaday, enjoyed your video very much! wish to stay in China one day as well... ❤ Love& Best wishes from Singapore ❤
Black coffee and one sugar, and if expresso lungo, then with oat foam to make it macchiato.
an apartment with a balcony is so nice 🥰
云南的紫外线比较强,出门的时候需要做好防晒。😃
Thank you for the information regarding costs. But the realisation is that we are being ripped off in the West. We were informed via the Media in the UK this last week that we are all paying 37% in taxes, before we pay our rent etc etc. We pay 20% VAT on petrol and a Petrol Tax. I could go on. Enjoy the balcony.
In Taiwan we pay one month up front, but we have contract with landlord for one year or two years.
such a great price. in shenzhen i pay more for a small apartment, but shenzhen is so modern and i live the subway in shenzhen.
The Apartment is LARGE and is Nice; I love it; it's Spacious and NICE.
Hi, Lizzy great video, can you talk about Medical services & what to expect in terms of any costs?
Hiii! Yeah so when I go to see the doctor, to make an appointment is like 20rmb, and maybe medicine or a drip! Even when I had food poisoning, all the tests and stuff I got never exceeded 100rmb! When I go for a full medical check once a year(like everything, blood, body scans everything) I pay 400rmb
印象中youtube上有一个南京的外国小伙子,记录了他去医院看病的经过。
Depends on which city you live in . In Shanghai, you’ll still paying $3000 rent per month.
by the way have you ever been stone forest and jiuxiang cave in kunming it is so beautiful
Yessss I have 😁 jiuxiang cave I havent been to
Apartments are very similar to Germany but taller. My kitchen is tiny too. Omg and in Germany apartments are not furnished including kitchen so you have to put everything in yourself. Rent is very expensive too
How do you make a living and what kind of Visa do you have? How do you manage your health insurance. Or do you pay as you go? Your mom will need those things as well.
Looks wonderful. What is the climate around your area?
The name of the city: Kunming, Climate: like spring all year round
Geniet Lizzy! Sjina is lekker!
Apartment prices in China are amazing.
Very nice apartment !!
I'm from Shanghai and immigrated to Virginia 15 years ago. My one-bedroom apartment now costs about $2000. In comparison, apartments in China are really cheap. I hope you enjoy your life and everything goes well in China.
Where I live rent is more than 700euros and that's for "social" housing. Free market rent is way more.
The space is really great you got for 300 dollars only. In Singapore, you rent a room for 1k.. and thats the HDB flat kinda room..not even a condo.😅
2000RMB per month is a little higher rent in Yuannan city,
in usa you can only sleep in tent at street or some field and eat every second or third day for 300$ monthly
Renting an apartment in Singapore, a living room with 3 very small bedrooms, 30,000 RMB a month. So compare with mine, 2,200 RMB is same as free.
The workers wage is around 1400rmb a month that's was around 14 years ago
Thanks for sharing.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! I paid $300/mth just for my aiyi (cleaning lady) in Shanghai. My one bedroom apartment cost $1500 + per month.
Quality and durability is very important watch out for that
Looks great. ❤
Hi Lizzy! I also love black coffee!
This same apartment will cost $2000 in rent minimum in a medium size US city
Geez $300 a month! I'll do without closets for that amount. Congrats on your place.
Yunnan is good, not cold because it is in the south. Don't live in Beijing or north of China where winter is freezing. $300/month is cheap.
Cute apartment!
Please let me know how to rent apartment. Which app you used ?
Is RMB the same as yuan
In my country the rental price is even cheaper than that. But for a studio type apartment.
Meanwhile, what you rented was a 2 bedroom apartment, right?
But I think your apartment is quite cheap to rent for a 2 room apartment.
@BecauseI'mLizzy in Which city do you live?
Strange that they don't provide closets and fridge etc? Even 'unfurnished' apartments should provide those.
that's cheap. Much more pricey in Sydney, Australia. Around $2500 to $3000 RMB *per week*
Yes - I like black coffee, but I prefer black tea.
Hey , can you tell how much will it cost in zhuhai (accomodation rent and other living expenses), for a family of 3( husband, wife and 1 year baby)

What I would like to know is how much the people make per month that pay this amount. You are basing on cheap rent based on your American nor Canadian or English salary. What is the average salary in China?
