185 people were onboard the aircraft. No injuries were reported.
Airport authorities closed the runway after the incident to clean all FOD.
The aircraft is still grounded 24 hours after the incident.
I'm glad the authorities closed the runway and cleaned the FOD. Besides mud and turf, there's a possibility of landing/runway/taxi lights being struck with debris ending on the runway and taxiway. (Especially if the airport has the older, raised style lights.)
Two new engines required...
Budget russian airline so there's that.

As a Lithuanian I'm not a big fan of these translations, they make everyone seem like they passive aggresive and using sarcasm 😅
@@captainsalty9579 but they DO sound passive aggressive in Lithuanian :)
@@Iggy3 Not at all, more shocked than anything from the tone. Just that most people won't understand the tone cause they're also speaking in Lithuanian, pair it up with the translation that looks like extreme sarcasm and you've got people thinking this pilots a jackass. Instead of "really, indeed" the translation would be "Most certainly (did)" and instead of "What kind of assistance do you need?" i think he meant more along the words of "do you need any assistance?"
Every off-roader is proud of the mud on their vehicle. Company won't be as happy though.
They'll be swapping out those engines for overhaul. *Crazy* amounts of water/spray/rain at moment of touchdown. Must have aquaplaned. Quite impressive regain of control on grass!🙃
Some aviators here in Vilnius report, that water don't hold on the runway in EYVI. Not sure how precise is this, but could it be some icing as temperature is around 0C these days with drizzle rain.
Not so much concern with the water, it’s the mud that was kicked up by the nose wheel getting ingested. Engines can handle LOADS of water, but not mud.
seems there's a dent in the right engine cowling too and I don't know about the flaps/slats position in the last picture they may also have caused something not great with the hydraulics
@@marcocasati6953 That dent is probably from one (or more) of the (many) ground-based landing lights that line the runway.
Former turbine mechanic here - if this were in North America, something like the following will happen:
1) no fan blade damage = clean engine with compressor wash, and then borescope the core for damage, if minor, blend/repair
2) fan blade damage, blend or swap out blades, and perfoem step 1
3) compressor wash shows lots of internal damage, beyond limits = engine out.

I think a fire truck spray salute type wash may be needed. The grounds crew are going to be shaking there heads filling in the massive ruts in the grass.
I mean if it ends up on the runway, pointing in the right direction with the engines running and no flat tires, is there really an issue. ;)
"what kind of help do you need?"
"family never needs help"
I think the video is incorrectly titled. Should be "Airplane ATTEMPTS HANDBRAKE TURN ONTO RAMP at Vilnius.'
That was pretty impressive regaining control and getting that thing back on the runway without touching a wingtip! I'm not a pilot, but I'm guessing that was all rudder. Anyone on this channel have ideas about that? I'm also guessing there should not have been so much standing water on the runway.
what was impressive...was the lack of airmanship that caused this in the first place...and the poor decision to taxi when the landing gear may have been damaged.
@@alanb.4660 wouldn't it also be not sensible to keep taxiing under own power when possible your engines have ingested mud ? Or would that be not the case ?
The way the plane actually got back on the runway though o.O
Never argue with a pilot and tell them to go “touch some grass”

They never read back an instruction to not depart the runway.
No clue how the gear didn't collapse
In the rain too lol. Guess they got lucky as hell
The mains are probably fine, but I'm concerned about the nose wheel. This is where the maintenance team either earns their pay or masks a problem that will down the aircraft twenty years down the road. (Like the improper tail strike patch that doomed JAL123 causing the tail of a B747 to fall off 12 minutes into the flight.)
ICAO Annex 14, chapter 3.4
Dis No ordinary Grass
Family
I know some pickup truck drivers who, when they go off roading, won't wash their trucks off for days. They wear the mud as a badge of honor! That plane did some good off roading!
And that ladies and Gentlemen is why there is the runway strip. (Check ICAO annex 14 chapter 3.4).
Where there must be no obstructions (neither up or down, so no ditches in the grass), all necessary objects need to be breakable and the surface needs to withstand an Aircraft at least once.
It's not some random miracle the gear didn't break, it's in no small part due to aerodrome design specifications.
Do you know if approach lighting and the like is designed to break away on impact?
@@alexhajnal107 They are indeed designed that way
That must have been a „Code brown“ for anyone on board. 😳
Kudos to the pilots, great catch and rescue.
Holy! That was a bit more excitement than they planned for...
So, he decided to do a little off-roading. Cool.
The engineering which goes into the landing gear is really amazing. Glad everyone was safe, but he made a mess and I'm sure maintenance isn't going to be too happy washing the mud off.
It's also the grass engineering (No Joke)
On the CVR: "Let me show you something cool. Hold my beer."
This channel is faster than the evening news.
Sure we are! :D
Amazing that they just kept taxing like everything normal?
I would imagine the plane will undergo a very thorough inspection. The landing gear took a hard beating at a bad angle.
Landing gear and the engines at the very least, but probably (depending on the G's experienced) a lot more, including bits and pieces of fuselage, wings, stabilizer and who knows what else.
Nah, it's a Russian airline.
@@simasm.7132 The captains massive feelings of indifference must have nearly sheared off as well.
@@btodoroff No, Avion Express is a Lithuanian Airline and this happened at Vilnius Airport in Lithuania. Russian Airlines are not allowed to enter EU-Airspace. This Aircraft came from Bergamo/ Italy.
Also... The grass will need an inspection (No Joke!)
It's part of the runway strip.
One thing caught my attention is that Lithuanians' english accent is exactly like Russians when they speak English, despite the fact that they dont belong to the same linguistic group.
Oh yes, I realized that as well, yet one will find many pilots of various nationalities flying for an airline, as those are not employing local nationals exclusively. This could be in fact russian pilot flying for this baltic state carrier...
@@indyawichofficial1346Not very likely. Just after the Runway excursion the Pilot and ATC talked a short moment in Lithuanian with each other.
Lithianian is a Balto-Slavic Lsnguage.

A perfect landing! Following the center line of the airport area.
😳 I didn't know Airbus built rallycross planes!
Those mechanics are gonna be pissed.
That's some sick drift
That plane got so scared it shat itself thoroughly.
It looks crazy and was in fact dangerous. Unbelievable that the Pilots simply powered the Aircraft with the Engines out of the mud as if it would be a Rallye Car. "Really, indeed."
Well, I just witnessed what will be the first level of a new subset of the pressure washer/cleanup games: "Airport Cleanup Manager".
"FOD Squad"
Or "Powerwash Simulator: Airport DLC"
@@sangheili1024see I would buy that lol😂
@@sangheili1024 I can see that DLC. But I think with the search for FOD, moving/removing damaged aircraft, and possibly repairing the airport lighting system, this is probably more akin to House Flippers than Powerwash Simulator.
Awesome drift!! Well done to the pilots for saving the day!
Is it my imagination that the pilot sounded like he was surprised/annoyed for being called out for going off the runway like that? The ATC's concerns were valid. From the footage, it seemed like the issue might have been beyond the pilots' control with the water on the runway. (Yeah, I suppose you could make the argument that this should have been a go around from the start and a call for ATC to "squeegee" the runway. Hard to tell what was going on without cockpit recordings.)
As a Lithuanian, I would say he was rather surprised than annoyed
I think he answered more like someone who needed a fresh set of clean underwear... Betcha his adrenaline level was through the roof.
Float aircraft emergency landed in the water and overturned - pilot able to get out with minor injuries. In Dakota County, MN approximately 1 hour ago. I was involved in this, would love to hear the ATC audio. Also occurred right near Wipaire facility, and had a 2023 manufacture date, wondering if that was just a coincidence or?
Well done for pilot getting it back in control... scary stuff really! Glad no one got hurt.
This would be a nice scale model weathering challenge to depict this aircraft post incident. 😂
I’m guessing that aircraft will be due for a very expensive repair after all that mud going into the engines.
From the stills, it does not look as if much of the mud spray was forward of the intakes. They might have (mostly) got away with that. Full landing gear inspection, I guess. As for the passengers; well that will teach those in the cheap seats!
Aerodrome repairs will be costly too ^^ No Joke that's some Special Grass Out there in the runway strip.
This Airbus has extremely robust landing gear
They're built for the worst possible expected .01% condition and then +50% beyond that.
Yes very impressive, if it had been a 737 MAX it would have probably fallen apart 🤣
Keep in mind that the runway strip is specially designed to behave that way.
Well, that's one heck of a whoopsie-doodle! They need a good bath from a power washer after that!
And that's just for the passengers.
Fast and furious writer's: WRITE THE SHIT DOWN!!! WRITE IT DOWN

Man I should've gone to Vilnius yesterday, just an hour away and was considering it.
The pain
Tower: I saw you veered off the runway,
Pilot: You really did
Wow, epic footage!
Captain: Nothing to see here. Please disperse.
Pilot said “really, indeed” but meant “I don’t want to talk about it”. Pretty sure it wasn’t his fault from what I’m reading about weather conditions, but I’ll bet he was expecting to get a hard time from the other pilots.
It’s strange that the pilots didn’t quickly advise tower of what caused the runway excursion so they could shut the runway down. Plus it would have helped reinforce whatever the pilots report that happened to take burden off of them for the cause of the incident, if indeed it was caused by unreported surface conditions such as standing water. I would be letting someone know ASAP for multiple reasons.
ATC contacted them almost immideately, pilots would've probably told them afterwards but it wasn't their main priority. The translations also make it seem like the pilots were passive aggressive and sort of angry, in reality they sound more shocked. Instead of "indeed, really" the more accurate translations would be "most certainly did"
The runway will be shut down anyway for inspections of the strip and FOD checks.
I'm guessing that there will be plenty of "mud" on the inside of the aircraft too
Pilots are just chilled out like nothing evens happened, mental haha
Yes, they were like "Nothing to see here, people. Go on with your day, everything is fine" 😊

slightly worrying how casual the flight crew were there! if visibility was poor would they have even reported it to tower?
i doubt the fact they have wrecked the plane ,they be able to pretend nothings happened and prepare for next flight
@@theresnobodyhere5778 it's not just the plane though, the runway would have to be checked for any damage or debris.
It was unreported debris on the runway that caused the Concorde crash in Paris.

When you request deicing to clean the plane😂
That runway was in very poor condition to land with all that water on it.

Aqua planning?
Thats quite standard conditions in baltics, nothing to do with
Pilot: Let's pretend it never happened
@VASAviation you think you could make a video on the fatal plane crash in Clearwater, Florida?
Sure looks like they deployed the correct reverser to try and help get the airplane straight again. Once straight, it appears the #2 reverse opens (again?) to help keep the plane straight. Not sure if I see that correctly, but if so that is some serious skill to identify which reverse would help meanwhile all that chaos is going on.
They were using both thrust reversers. It's not advisable to use asymmetric thrust to steer the airplane.
How were you able to see both engines from this angle and with such amount of water in the way?
@@gintautasnik5214
You can see the water being kicked up by the reversers.
