Can’t believe that none of the reviews mentioned how a supposed deadly assassin who can use every kind of weapon can’t handle a pool cue - and wtf is a pool cue doing in a completely fantasy world? And how the hell does she not wake up when the captn is creepily staring at her from her unlocked bedroom door WHEN SHE’S SUPPOSED TO BE A HYPER ALERT ASSASSIN sheeeeeeesh

To be honest tho, I agree with the reviewers. And I defenitely hate this type of books - "badass heroine who is way too powerful and also happens to be the most beautiful creature that walks the earth, hence all this romance in the book!" it's just... nah I'll pass.

ONE OF THE WORST PARTS in the series is when she runs back to the place after being poisoned which I think is STUPID. I have a cousin who got a snake bite and made the mistake of running too. He survived but has to take better care of himself from now on. And the assassin should have died!

Paolini wrote ERAGON at 16 😅 like... I'm all for supporting young writers... I myself wrote a book at 15... and I know the pain of seeing your cringey creation edited... but I understood there's the NEED for someone to tell you "hey, this needs editing", especially if you're going to be an international bestseller. The editor WAS NOT 16 I assume, I assume there wasn't even an editor. How do you let gummy bears sneak into a fantasy world? This is the problem of this book.

This. Video. Is. LIFE! I agree 100% with everything, although I enjoyed the first couple of books. Especially the last one, it basically sums up the entire series, which literally becomes a romance with a little bit of plot.

That's good to know. I liked the first book, but the second one disappointed me SO MUCH. I gave up after book 3. I despised the main character and all her ridiculous love interests. The only thing that kept me reading was the secondary characters, which were much more interesting. Favorite quote: "A review that in hindsight was extremely suspicious... loaded with the kind of gushing enthusiasm that one would expect out of a rabid Twilight Fan"... and then whatever she says a review ruled by someone's reproductive urges. Awesome. It makes me kinda sad that such a story about a pretty girl (who happens to kick ass but so rarely it hardly qualifies) who whines a lot and makes men fall head over heals with her is so popular with the young adult crowd. Teen girls deserve a strong woman to admire. Caelena Sardothien is a terrible role model.

Real talk though, this book was overhyped and it was soooo disappointing. The supposed great scenes were ironically off-screen and summarized. She was described to be the 'best assassin' but most of the time she was the one getting spooked and barely shown any credentials of being a competent one at that.
The pacing is 'blah' and most of the attention was given to dresses and giggling about the prince. A person who has to fight for her freedom won't lament on how thin she got in prison or how slavery may have taken away her beauty (which was denied by almost every character in the book) so instead of being a well-rounded female character, she came off as arrogant, whiny and flat-out vain.

    • @etharchildres3976

Most of the stuff you view as negative attributes to the character I thought were good character flaws.
When I started the book and I read the phrase “Adarlan’s greatest Assassin”, I was a little scared that we would get an OP character but they quickly establish that she’s WAY out of her element. Her first fight with Chaol is a loss which I liked because it presented a challenge for her to overcome. In fact Chaol Stick bonk became a funny idea in my head when I read that part of the book. When I looked at it like Celaena WAS a great Assassin but a year of torture practically brought her back to LV1 I had a lot more fun reading the book.
And for ONCE we have a character show more emotion than just Sadness Happiness or Anger. She does get jealous, she does get frustrated, and she gains confidence as the book goes on, she doesn’t dwell on the idea that she isn’t beautiful anymore, although scars are a big part of her character. And she can be really funny, in fact a lot of this book is pretty funny.
As for the giddy dress stuff my friend who got me into these books says that it’s stuff real girls think about. It was a little weird reading it as a guy but I eventually found it quite charming.
Reading it two times I realized that it isn’t really an Fantasy Adventure story. It’s more of a light Fantasy Romance book with an adventure subplot. If you don’t like to read characters sitting around and talking with each other while occasionally a great action scene will pop up its just not your thing. It’s more for someone who likes Pride and Prejudice, stories where characters can just be themselves and figure out the story on their own rather than it being forced onto them by outside forces.

Assassin's Blade is a collection of 5 short novellas which will give background to her character and why she ended up in tat prison. They're set before the first book.
Unfortunately the first book takes long and you don't get to see the character at her best.

  • @ellstaveley
    @ellstaveley 6 років тому +29

I can relate to a lot of these reviews! The PLOT of the series (outside of the 101 love stories) is really good and well developed but I find the character development, traits and actions of the characters to be completely implausible. The character's personalities make little sense and I have a hard time believing they are capable of simply being themselves aside from perhaps 2 characters... Arobynn and Manon. Even the latter as the series comes to a close feels like she's losing everything about her that made her such a special character.
The main character is the worst in the book and it's almost as if it's the immature suppressed teenager dwelling deep within S.J.Maas that she always wanted to unleash on the world. Quite frankly this character is toxic. The more time she spends around other characters, they all seem to blend into her. She literally sucks the life out of interesting characters.
Lastly, what's with all the love story plots? What is this? The Valentine's Day movie?

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  6 років тому

Haha, my friend would 100% love to have a conversation with you about the various love stories. It's the reason she put the series down (among other things). She was so angry that there's a different love interest in almost every book, or MULTIPLE love interests within one book :O I've only read up to book three and don't know that I'll ever continue, but...we'll see. I constantly go back and forth on whether I should turn them into my local used bookstore for store credit :/

That toxicity of her on just the first book made me not want to continue, hard to like a book if you can't see the main character as likeable even if they are the embodiment of cool stuff and powers

I'm in the middle of 4th book of ToG and I'm litteraly hearbroken... Sure I was prepared for loads of handsome princes, prom dresses and not that deep dialogues and it was totally fine with me, I like that kind of stuff, but I also expected a love story. A great, epic love story that overcomes obstacles! But instead I got many illogical and shallow relationships. And it just make me sad and so disappointed. I'll never be fooled again Sarah J. Maas!

Personally for me, I read until the day after the piano incident and stopped because everything I've read before that point just didn't do it for me and I don't want to suffer through the first book in order for me to be happy about the next ones or the series in general. No, in a book series, the first one sets the mood for the entirety of the story. And there are a bunch of trilogies I've gone through that got me hooked with the first sentence of the first book and this one consists of seven.
Do I need to read four books before I can be happy about the series?

      Short answer: No.
If you want to still read, read it online (for free if you know where to look), but don't buy it because you're honestly probably going to waste the money. I am reading it currently (I'm on book 5, which is Empire of Storms), and I still don't honestly like it that much. The MC is way too much of a Mary Sue, and the diversity... is literally nonexistent. Everyone is white and straight, POC? Nehemia was literally the only major POC, the others are 'tanned'. All the dudes are manly, ripped, possessive, territorial, and so full of fkin testosterone it's grating on my nerves. I do like one character, but that's mostly because she has yet to have shit romance. However, I know she is eventually going to have one and I am not looking forward to it.

Never seen reviews be more accurate.
Throne of Glass is terrible and the sequels devolve further from a Fantasy novel to ""which character is going to have sex with which next?"
The characters are copy/pasted with different names. And I have not come across such a MarySue character in a VERY long time, and the MC is might be the biggest example.

Back in the day, I was hearing all about the ToG series and was looking up the order of books to start out, but before that, I happened to read "The Selection" series by Kiera Cass (at least up till the "trilogy"). I dunno what came over me and what I was looking to get out of the series, but it's those pretty, pretty covers man! Maybe I was trying to read something entirely new.
I went in expecting like a beauty contest or something, and there probably was some of that, but there was also some dystopia, some politics, some mysteries, and love trapeziums, etc. It was at that time that I learned the power of the funny one star reviews! I found one person's serious-sounding but hilarious review for the first book and I think they made it their mission to read (and review) the whole series just to like, feel pain or something. I was just looking for the same review today but couldn't find it, unfortunately. But I stumbled upon this gem!

It was still an ok fun book to read. There was silly and stupid stuff in it, but fast pacing and yet I had enough time to really get to know the protagonist. I figured, it's YA and I'm an adult, not the target reader. My expectations weren't that high. I gave it some slack and rated it three stars.

😂😂 I also felt that way too in some parts in tog 😂😂😂 Reading the first book was quite difficult, especially since i dislike a main character who is so badass and who has it all. But i managed to finish it and read the other books, and I was glad I did 😍😍 celaena is a person who is more focused on herself, that she fails to realize the whole picture. But as the time goes by, her self realization and development grow better. I love her more now than i love her in tog. Especially in the EoS 😭😭😭 honestly, i think it was the best decision to read the rest of the book and to not give up.. there is more to this series. 😊

The sad part about loving th ENTIRE series is knowing the first 2 books ARE IN FACT about simple teen crushes with some knives mixed into it and therefore UNDERSTANDING why people stopped at 2 books if not earlier (I personally still love those 2 books though, sure they aren't the EPIC FABTASY TYPE like the rest of the series....but because the rest of the series is so intense I often miss the simplicity of the first 2 books if only because our main characters didn't feel the constant pressure of war as much back then)

The first book is honestly...meh but bear with the series till the 3rd book. The real story starts from the third book. The starting 2 books are average coz sarah got a contract for just 3 books and tried to keep the plot simple. But around halfway through writing the third one her contract was increased to six books.

Okay, despite the fact that I really didn't like the first two books in the series, I actually love the ToG series 😂😂😂but I still found this hilarious.
I find the plot and world building and writing in the later books in the series to be very great and well developed. My problem lies in some of the characters, how a lot of the male characters just seem to have to be same "walls of muscle" with different hair and eye colours and some of them lack depth and development. I disliked the heterocentric romance we got throughout most of the series and the lack of diversity though I guess that was kind of fixed in the most previous book where we got an almost entirely poc cast. And I also did not like how so many characters were being paired off in thrown into relationships even if it just felt forced.
In the first book which you're reviewing I found the characters to be very one dimensional, they lacked development and depth and sensible motives, I found the plot to be very thin, we're supposed to be in a death competition fighting for Celaena's freedom but we barely feel the tension or urgency of this situation as the author shoves aside the competition and glosses over most of it to make room for more flirting, winking and candy which I don't necessarily mind but there's more pressing issues to deal with which I'd rather read about. It had an intriguing premise which had the potential to be an overall amazing and exciting book but that potential was squandered in the first book. The first book was "A shallow, deceitful collection of words and sentences that fails to deliver" 😂😂
I thought that as the series progressed the characters got more development, and the plot got thicker and more interesting, stakes got higher and I could feel the threat, the looming danger and threat of war which I really enjoyed reading about. The series as a whole is one of my faves, I really enjoy reading it and I really love most of the characters and I'm intrigued by the plot but I've still got some problems with it, I'm a fan of the series, but I'm not biased, I'll treat it and critique it as I do any other series 😂

So many people hated on Celaena's personality, how she's basically like a cat how she'll be focused one moment and then easily distracted the next, but that's just part of her charm. And you learn why she's so fond of books as you go deeper into the story. You learn more about her as you go on. And, yes, she did focus on outfits a lot . . . because she's a girl! Heck, those who've read the whole series know more than that! Also, understand, she had been INPRISONED for quite a while. She didn't have those luxuries while she was down there. She was beaten and abused and forced to work. They tired her out and, honestly, she's appreciating the small things. Honestly, that's what I'll do when the pandemic's over. Have a better appreciation for things I love like libraries, book stores, cafes and bakeries, all the places Celaena would probably go to.

Tbh all the side characters are all structured/defined by their love interests. It’s all flimsy romance and teen shit.
The main character is a total Mary Sue that is only badass by name. I’m usually the type that would NEVER drop a series despite not liking it but when I read TOG, I just can’t handle it and have drop it on the fifth book. I wasted so much time in hoping the story would progress to be better. The first 3 books feels like a prologue even the 4th one tbh.

I recently download Goodreads competition Byzans and was SHOCKED at how HORRIBLE it was. It works by you joining groups for books you have read or are reading so you can discuss the books. Throne of Glass series books all had several hundred members while ALL of the classic books (1984 Anna Karenina Madam Bovary Great Gatsby to kill a mockingbird ect) had five members each at MOST. I was SHOCKED! Yet it suddenly made sense to me why so many people are fans of the Throne of Glass series. They have never read any classics so therefore have no idea what a good book is or what good writing is. They have nothing to compare this horrible series to so they just assumed it must be the best. Please I advise everyone to read at least one classic book on your own. That way you will be able to recognize good books instead of fawning over literal trash.

Give it a go at least. TOG is one of those series where half of the readers hate it while the other half adores it. I'd suggest just don't expect perfection for like 2 books. If anything, those are where Celaena is trying to "be who she wants to be AKA irresponsible" and after that is where she finally changes in one important sense. If anything, expect a fairy tale type of story filled with crushes, ballrooms and a bit of adventure. Because really, the action and high-ish fantasy don't begin till book 3. Also, another suggestion, don't get invested in the romances too much until book 3 either because then it'll just be annoying for you.

    • @scionsilverbeat8149
