My first thought while reading the opening pages of the book was, "Does SJM think 'adult' means swearing every other sentence?" I read about ten pages and couldn't take it anymore.
Her writing reminds me of middle school when kids swear every sentence to sound “cool” and “grownup” and “edgy” but really it makes them sound childish. My god Crescent City sounds like a fantasy book written by a 14 year old girl trying to be edgy.
THANK YOU! I just DNFd it and was explaining to my friends it felt laughably juvenile.. it’s my first introduction to Sarah j maas and I think it’s put me off her other work… it felt embarrassing and cringey reading it considering it’s supposed to be adult…
@@Stephie010302 And to start with that book too. 😅 Cresent City is a cross over/multiverse book that will go in to the other 2 book series. Especially The "A Cort of thorns and roses" series (which is much better though book 1 is the weakest). I would say that there is quite a lot of a background story from ACOTAR that you would want to have before reading the Crescent City. The 2 series happens parallel to each other but in different dimensions that will overlap, while I think "A throne of glass" is more in the past in a 3:rd dimension.

Yeah, that was enough for me too. I've never been more disappointed with a book: cool premise then straight into trying on dresses. Every time I see her books in the bookshop I cringe a little. Is she still churning this "brown stuff" out?
I couldn't even finish Throne of Glass, I can only take so much unfounded girl on girl hate and the book hit that limit before the half-way point. Like "Oh no this girl the MC doesn't like, likes pink, that means her hate is justified!" Please, stop.
I'm reading this book at the moment, just finished part 1 (the first 90 pages). The beginning was absolutely horrible. I could go on and on about how badly written this book is, with the repetition of character motion, the unnecessary, confusing infodumps about irrelevant stuff, the name dropping that gives you a headache, the desperate attempt to sound like an adult book and not be misunderstood for YA (which actually makes it look like it is written by a teen), the lazy world building (her world is an exact copy of earth, just with some names changed in a very lazy way (Hel instead of hell, interweb instead of internet, mirthroot instead of weed, etc.). However, the last 20 pages or so have been a lot better so I'm going to keep reading and see if it can steal my heart after all. I'm already more than ready to wreck it on Goodreads though, since SJM had the arrogance to think she didn't need an editor. Well, the lack of an editor clearly shows and not in a good way. And if I see another character 'swig from a bottle' instead of normally drinking their drink I'm going to throw stuff.

SPOILER!! I'm a huge Sarah J Maas Fan and loved every other book she wrote. But Crescent City...it probably is one of the worst books I ever read. The main character is totally unlikeable and her love interest probably the most boring guy that was ever written. Nothing about the book was original and I can't even think of one single plot twist (which I have loved in ACOTAR and TOG), maybe because except for the last 300 pages the book didn't even have a plot. The murder case wasn't exciting either because the murderers identity was pretty obvious from the beginning. I can't even say anything about the worldbuilding because there was none. It was very entertaining to see how many people have similar opinions.
I love Sarah J. Maas books. I find them super fun and addicting, are they the best written? No. I still think they are a good time. I really enjoyed crescent city as well, it was a fun ride. I can see some of these people’s points though, her books are definitely not for everyone. I found these really funny and creative .
I love Sarah J Maas as an author. She is my favorite author and has been for a while but I do agree that this book was the worst out of all of them. I think it could have been split into more than one. I wish there was more world building and I wish the romance was stretched like it is in her other books. Now that the main couple is together idk if I want to continue the series...not unless she pulls a Aelin where the main character ends up with a totally different guy but the end of the series.
So are you going to read it at some point? Would like to know how you feel about it! As someone who hates SJM's other books, I really enjoyed this one surprisingly. It was like reading a story about a close friend, someone I identified with. Not like her other ones where most characters are annoying af. I thought it was fun and kept my interest till the very end, despite it's sometimes predictable moments it had many unpredictable ones as well. I think it's funny how offended everyone is with the cursing.
"Throne of Glass" was enough to put me off for life. From the blurb, I was expecting the exciting adventures of a badass assassin; I got trying on dresses, Christmas presents (a puppy and some candy), and a yucky love triangle. "What???" Then I discovered that this was her attempt at writing Cinderella, and.... oh, why bother? btw, campfire looks cool but I'm not sure how it will integrate with my "two hundred Word files" system.
Harika Mohan 800 pages. I agree with having to read the majority of the book to get to the good stuff but I’m glad I finished it. It set the stage for the next book and the other 600 pages weren’t bad per say but it was just a big info dump. Each to their own 😊
Unprofessional Critic I didn’t say it was garbage lol. I’m saying it didn’t get REALLY GOOD until the last 200 pages. At the beginning there’s a lot of information thrown at you. If it isn’t your style then that’s fine 😊
This is the first time I’m listening to an audio book and I hate this was my first choice. I have to agree with those reviews. I LOVE ACOTR and I’m reading Queen of Shadows now but listening to Crescent City is ANNOYING. It’s like a cheese grater to my brain. The mix between the narrators voice and the constant profanity and juvenile relationships is unbearable.
Im so sad because this was my first SJM book. it isnt horrible but its not good either. bryce and hunt are so annoying and i feel nothing for them. i DNF'd. The cursing literally made me feel like i was losing brain cells 🥴
Oh boy! I should check my copy if all pages are there! I liked the book despite that Hunt is not that interesting (Team Aidas) and pacing issues. These reviews are so funny :-).
I've just been baffled by everything I've heard about this book, but I already decided that I'm not even going to bother with it till the next one comes out because it's long enough that I know I'll forget everything by then. Also, I go through phases with SJM where I'll read a bunch and LOVE it, but afterwards if I'm left with too much time to think about it I start to hate it. Which is kind of where I am at the moment lol
I can no longer stand Sarah J Maas at the best of times, I OwN aLL of hEr BLooDy bOokS to my dismay, (with the exception of this one) I was debating on reading this one but after reading the blurb it seemed like a Mortal Instruments rip off at best. But yes she does tend to copy and paste characters, I feel ToG stopped being original after book 4, and ACOTAR was... Well. The first book was... We all know what it was, lol. The second book was the best of the trilogy but really only due to all the sexual tension that was resolved between the two characters, I think SJM should really just 😬 check herself before she continues to regurgitate the same stuff over and over. Though... There are others that quite enjoy that, and I suppose to each their own 🤷🏻♀️ (strictly my opinion, I would never bash anyone that genuinely adores her and her books)
Aaahh I think throne of glass would have been a lot better if it didn't have anything to do with faeries or whatever they're called It's been years since I read throne of glass and I don't remember much but it would have been a better story for me if it only had to do with assassin's and all that Or maybe I'm just an idiot and I've confused tog with acotar on the faerie thing
Elliot Brooks If I'm being completely honest with you I couldn't say exactly now, I remember feeling that way when I read the quick blurb that was released before the book came out, it described (from what I remember) hybrids and murder and asfgsjdhdkdk. The blurb has obviously changed with the books release but that was my initial thought, perhaps now an invalid opinion? I don't know anyone that's read it either to agree or disagree with me yet hahah. Edit: I also read the mortal instruments when I was very young, it's hard for me to have a strong intelligent opinion on the series now as I never cared to dive back in 😬
All of these first few people say basically the same thing so it seems like it’s fair criticism lol but that first one really made me LOL. Also I agree about the use of ‘thrust’ in that context 😂
yeah... I think the only series of hers that i'll actually read is the throne of glass series. I like the characters enough to finish it ( i'm 4 books in) but her other works just sound like 40% sex. (though who knows how the last 3 books of tog will go)
Scarlett lost in the five lands is 100 times better than this boring alphahole book. With great difficulty, i finished reading all the 750 pages just to get to the action in the last 50 pages. I m not reading the sequel .
I love her books and they’re what actually got me into branching out to read high/epic fantasy(YA and Adult)but she definitely writes the most cringeworthy sex scenes I’ve ever read in my life. Everything is so over the top it’s funny. 😂
I’m a benefit of the doubt type guy but man oh man was it relief to finish Throne of Glass 1 needless to say I shan’t be reading the rest of the series 😅
I just started reading the Crescent City due to some people at work talking about it, one of which gave me her second copy of it. I literally mentioned last night how there is a lot of unnecessary profanity in it 😅 I'm currently at chapter 14 lol
I haven't even made it to page 100 yet and I couldn't agree more with everything you just read! The language is seriously unnecessary especially on every page it seems. Definitely seems like a teen or even a tween trying to be a show off and acting like an adult. I am finding this book a big downer a and with this being my first SJM book, I cannot even begin to understand how anybody can like her.
I loved it, I listened in audible. It was light, fun, trashy and a great distraction. Honestly the only things I would change are the use of the word alphahole and the sex scenes. I didn’t like them in GOT either. I don’t think that race matters in a book all about magical creatures so I don’t know why someone thought that mattered. But sometimes you want a fun trashy read this is it!
Did you happen to get The Library of Legends from book of the month? I’ve been in a reading slump but this book has really captivated me so far, waiting for people to read and review it.
This is one book that I would not be reading anyways, because I have tried to read Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass specifically, because I had seen so many booktubers raving about it, but I just couldn't. Her writing is on par with or just slightly better than Cassandra Clare, who I am decidedly not a fan of. I think these one star reviews were hilarious though, and pretty much on par for what I read in Throne of Glass.
I absolutely love Maas’ other two series, they among my favorites, but I have to agree with these negative reviews. Crescent city was certainly a disappointment all around
Anthropology Girl completely agree. I anticipated this release for over a year and I didn’t even finish it. I’m 3/4 of the way through and haven’t felt the desire to pick it up in weeks. Super disappointing. I will say that I’ll force myself to finish before the sequel comes out because Aidas is the only character that was even remotely intriguing to me and he should be more involved in the second book.
I am a huge ACOTAR and Throne of Glass fan. I’ve never gotten the hate on Mass and have loved all her books but this was SO disappointing. I didn’t even finish it y’all. 😭😱 I was really looking forward to it but I felt absolutely zero connection to any of the characters and found myself going days without picking it back up. I will probably force myself to read it before the sequel comes out because the only character that even remotely intrigued me was Aidas and I anticipate him potentially being more involved in the sequel.
Elliot Brooks I got about 2/3 of the way through! I just wasn’t finding myself caring about picking it up. There were other books I’ve been wanting to start so I just haven’t grabbed crescent city in a few weeks. Disappointing!
TOG is my fave series and up until the release of CC I considered myself to be a pretty big SJM fan but now..idek. The amount of cis-heteronormativity that goes into her books is just no- I am probably going to continue this series since it got a little bit better towards the end but oh well it was still a pretty big disappointment
Sounds like a Sarah J. Mass book tbh :D I'm not a fan of her work, so I'm not even going to read it. From what I read of her other books, I really feel these reviews. I think a lot of her readers are younger. And it is easier to impress younger readers. But now more adults might check this particular book out. It looks like the printing factory's quality control was super lax lol.
I'm an easy reader, I dont interpret much while reading or listening to the audiobook. so from my point of view, I liked the book. It's not very deep, but I don't need it to be.
I overall genuinely liked the book, not the best book ever and, in my opinion, not maas’ best work, but quite enjoyable anyway. I agree with some things that were brought up but honestly i did not mind that much (gave it 4 stars of i remember correctly) I love these one star reviews so much, always a good laugh for my study breaks for my finals 😂
The only reason I originally was gonna give it a shot was its beautiful cover, and even inside it had alot of nice artistic aesthetic. I figured her skill as an author must have gotten better?(I never read her other work but I could tell her story telling and plots were not for me) And then I saw the size...no way was I gonna risk sinking my time into this notorious writer with that page count lol
I wanna firstly say that I 100% respect your opinion, I just wanted to say that I really liked the book. Maybe its because it was my first book to read but idk I just liked the plot twists and the enemies to lovers😅
Okay tbh I enjoyed the book, but i agree like 90% with especially the first review lol! Why was B so bitchy??? God I hated her most of the time. But hella amazing action scenes if you can deal with the rest of it haha. Loved this video hehe "thrust"
100 pages in, and I can't go on anymore. I've read better shit on wattpad. I have read both ACOTAR and TTOG, comparatively totally disappointed by CC. Unnecessary profanity and boring protagonists. I personally find Danika and Fury and Ruhn characters more interesting than either protagonists. Anyways I'm dropping it.
Hey can you please make a recommendations video of YA books that is in the younger side of YA you know what I mean not too graphic 11,12 year olds can read it ( I have a 12 year old little sister )

I don’t get the whole cursing and drug thing. The drugs were for the first couple of chapters when she was younger. She is older and won’t even drink the rest of the book 😂
Omg I want to read the whole first review. That person took the idea of sarcasm and ran with it! - do you know these comedians who make Jokes about politicians? If he/she were given the chance to write about politicians and their fails ... he/she would MINCE them, in a funny way XD (The person just should leave some words out. Wow, to hear that a reader didn't even believe for one minute that the characters are real (authentic) ppl, is probably the worst Feedback an author can get for his/her characters o.o (wound - salt - rub - PAIN!)

I was the friend who thoroughly enjoyed the book - literally don’t care when ppl hate on it or her other books haha 😄🤷♀️
Ahh I love partaking in a heavy dose a salt to get the morning started XD
I enjoyed CC but it didn’t get GOOD until the last 200 pages then it was a whirlwind 😀
Isn't it a 700 page book? No book should make readers sit through 500 pages of bad to get to the good parts imo.
@@QuarterLifeCrises it's 800. So the op is saying we'll have to plod through 600 pages of garbage to get to the good(!) part? Hard pass for me.
@@unprofessionalcritic3107 800 pages? Jeez.
A party girl in front of the Paparazzi after a night of cocaine 😂
I loved this book, but I also love funny one star reviews.
How did people hate this book? It was fantastic.
Oh boy! I should check my copy if all pages are there! I liked the book despite that Hunt is not that interesting (Team Aidas) and pacing issues. These reviews are so funny :-).
I am loving the cabinet behind you. My OCD heart is very satisfied by the aesthetic.
At first I was cringing and rolling my eyes at every page but after a while I started to see past that stuff and I actually ended up enjoying the book
Elliot, thanks for bringing this book to my attention. It goes straight to the top of my TBR list 😉
This honestly cracked me up soo hard 😆 I despised both ToG series and ACOTAR series so those 2 combined as HoEaB will probably end me as a human 😂
Aaahh I think throne of glass would have been a lot better if it didn't have anything to do with faeries or whatever they're called
It's been years since I read throne of glass and I don't remember much but it would have been a better story for me if it only had to do with assassin's and all that
Or maybe I'm just an idiot and I've confused tog with acotar on the faerie thing
What about it seemed like a ripoff of mortal instruments? I haven’t gotten into this series.
(though who knows how the last 3 books of tog will go)
Wow, didnt expect a Sims shout out in a Booktube video :P
Haha, the Sims was so fun when I was younger. I’m afraid if I tried it again, I’d never stop 😆
Scarlett lost in the five lands is 100 times better than this boring alphahole book. With great difficulty, i finished reading all the 750 pages just to get to the action in the last 50 pages. I m not reading the sequel .
I loved this book, but can understand not everyone feels that way, so I'm here for the sass!
I think it's strange that everyone calls it Crescent City and that's not even its title. Did the marketing team fall asleep?
It’s the name of the series. It’s like saying Mistborn instead of The Final Empire 🤷🏻♀️
Just tell me one thing does it end in a cliffhanger? Coz i can't wait for 2nd book😔😔
I love her books and they’re what actually got me into branching out to read high/epic fantasy(YA and Adult)but she definitely writes the most cringeworthy sex scenes I’ve ever read in my life. Everything is so over the top it’s funny. 😂
"Velvet wrapped steel" will always be a classic.
I’m a benefit of the doubt type guy but man oh man was it relief to finish Throne of Glass 1 needless to say I shan’t be reading the rest of the series 😅
The goodreads review section must be on fire 🔥
These reviews are very funny but I love the way you read them.
I don’t think there’s anything close to that level of cursing in her other books, if that’s helpful to know.
I love this series of yours. And I love this book. I gave it 5 stars. I’m still going to laugh at this video. 😆♥️🌙
You have to admit there is a lot of creativity when it comes to some of these reviews 😂😂😂
Spot on.
Off topic but I love your hair 🙂
I couldn’t get through the few Sarah J Mass books that I tried, don’t plan on reading this one.
Haha, thanks 💁🏻♀️ I’ve read a couple of her books. Maybe I’ll pick up this one, we’ll see :D
Did you happen to get The Library of Legends from book of the month? I’ve been in a reading slump but this book has really captivated me so far, waiting for people to read and review it.
No palate cleanser needed, I;m off to read more one star reviews of this book, and give them all "likes". Thanks for the video, it made my day.!
Ah, that’s too bad! Hopefully her next works will be better for you 😊
I am a huge ACOTAR and Throne of Glass fan.
How much of it did you end up reading? I know a lot of people have struggled with the beginning 😮
The amount of cis-heteronormativity that goes into her books is just no-
I am probably going to continue this series since it got a little bit better towards the end but oh well it was still a pretty big disappointment
I haven’t read my copy yet; but now I feel the need to see if all the pages are there.
Now I understand why I kinda liked the book but also didn’t....?
I'm an easy reader, I dont interpret much while reading or listening to the audiobook. so from my point of view, I liked the book. It's not very deep, but I don't need it to be.
I enjoyed Throne of Glass but I hated this book and will not be continuing with the series nor do I plan on rereading this one
I love Crescent city so much but I have no other thing to watch so here I am
I overall genuinely liked the book, not the best book ever and, in my opinion, not maas’ best work, but quite enjoyable anyway. I agree with some things that were brought up but honestly i did not mind that much (gave it 4 stars of i remember correctly) I love these one star reviews so much, always a good laugh for my study breaks for my finals 😂
I’m glad you enjoyed it! And good luck with your finals 😊
I enjoyed it, but her books are more of a guilty pleasure for me
😂 Im reading this now and I agree with all of this. In the defense of Hunt his actual name is Orion.
I loved this book! I am afraid to watch this video but I kind of have to 😅 like something terrible you can't look away
I preferred ACOSF over Crescent City. Nesta was a more mature character in comparison to 25 yr old Bryce.
HAHAHA i agree with everything said in this video!! I dnf’d this because i just could Not deal
The last one with the food leftover was funny 😄
I always debate buying this book then see terrible reviews 😂 it seems you either love it or hate it
Hey can you please make a recommendations video of YA books that is in the younger side of YA you know what I mean not too graphic 11,12 year olds can read it ( I have a 12 year old little sister )
This is now good reads book of the year in fantasy
That's . . . Scary.
Video idea: YA book titles- do they make sense for the plot?
Unfortunately, this was my first SJM and I HATE it.! Can’t make myself read it whole. :/ might as well dnf it. I don’t know how 90% of the booktube rated it as the best book in their mid-year freak out tag 🤷🏻♀️
I loved CC so much, I cant relate at all :D my absolute favourite
I don’t get the whole cursing and drug thing. The drugs were for the first couple of chapters when she was younger. She is older and won’t even drink the rest of the book 😂
This might hurt my ❤️
I’m 200 pages in and these reviews are exactly how I feel! I’m struggling to get through it.
Then Dnf it. If you don’t like it, don’t waste your time on it.
Uhhh love the hair 🤩
Well thanks 💁🏻♀️
Despite all the reviews might give this book a try
how is luna doing?
Only just started it 70 pages in good book so far
Omg I want to read the whole first review. That person took the idea of sarcasm and ran with it! - do you know these comedians who make Jokes about politicians? If he/she were given the chance to write about politicians and their fails ... he/she would MINCE them, in a funny way XD
(The person just should leave some words out. I don't want to hear vibrator and My little Pony in the same sentence XD. But the rest, I consider Art 😂😂😂)
The 2nd review ... Wow, to hear that a reader didn't even believe for one minute that the characters are real (authentic) ppl, is probably the worst Feedback an author can get for his/her characters o.o (wound - salt - rub - PAIN!)
