- Today I am unboxing and trying out the new waffle iron I got for my birthday. This is called the Great American Waffle Iron and it is made right here in Tennessee. No, it isn't made by Lodge. It is made by the Appalachian Cast Iron Co. Stay tuned for more info on this beautiful piece of cast iron.

I cook almost exclusively on cast iron. I have a first issue Appalachian #8 and I love it. I use lard on mine. For those wishing to use butter, I recommend clarified butter or ghee. Vegetable oils & sprays will gum up the iron. Aim for 375° on the iron. For a browner waffle, add more sugar to the batter . Appalachian Cast Iron lists some recipes on their website.
Good stuff!
Oh my Goodness, Happy Belated Birthday!! Those stars are goregous. And your waffles came out, they look perfect. I love how the stars will collect and hold the butter. Lucky girl!
Thanks so much! 😊
A belated happy birthday to you!
Thank you.
That is so nice, another great product from Tennessee! Wow!
It sure is!
Love it and happy birthday
Thank you.
These are definitely gonna be new classics
I agree.
Beautiful waffles and a great American made product at waffle iron. That was so nice to see. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Oh wow, that's an outstanding quality well forged waffle iron there! And some amazing looking waffles it makes. I have never heard of Appalachian cast iron. Thanks for sharing there link, I'll be checking them out for sure. 👍
Thanks for stopping by. I believe they are doing a new design on the waffle iron now.
happy belated birthday! it's a beautiful waffle iron. L 18 after watching 5 minutes and keep connecting
Thank you so much 🤗
I wasn't aware of this company. I went to the website and they've discontinued this waffle iron. I wanted to see the price because I can usually find vintage pieces cheaper than new ones. A vintage Griswold high base 1930s-1940s is roughly $150ish. They come in waves, I found two within 10 days, one in Maryville and the other in Bridgeport. I gave $75 for a low base Griswold in Pikeville this spring. These prices are for pieces that will clean up perfectly but hadn't been restored at the time. Condition has a lot to do with the price. If we include all brands I've been blessed with 6 this year. I had rather get them unrestored before some hack job uses a wire wheel on them.
I'll keep you in mind if I find another bundt cake mold in good shape at a good price. I've only found two this year and sold one on the 127 yard sale. I enjoy collecting but I don't hoard pieces that I already have. I restore and pass them on for someone else to enjoy.
I was told they are out of stock. They will be adding them back in stock soon. They were selling for $140. They had a message on Instagram saying the price would be going up because materials cost more now.
@@BobbiJo It certainly is a nice piece and it helps negotiations when you can say "a new one is just $140". Some will fall for that and some will just laugh. You find out who will work with ya but it never hurts to try. Ya gota know when to walk away or you'll be kickin yourself.
@turdferguson5300 i enjoy it. I didn't pay for it. It was a birthday gift. 😆 I've never paid more than $20 for a cast iron piece. Thats why I like the Lodge factory seconds.
@@BobbiJo Yes I know and it's a nice present. I don't use our savings either. I restore and sell spatulas for my trading money. I wanted better pieces without breaking the bank so I had to do something. I feel like George Jefferson movin on up to the eastside. lol Weezie likes it too so we have fun together. We have to decide where we're going this weekend.
@@BobbiJo Now they are $225, which is a shame. I have a Griswold one, but I really liked the stars.
That's really cool. Beautiful waffle
Thank you.
Looks good.
Thank you.
Happy Birthday even though it’s late. Nice and can’t go wrong with cast iron. Did you have a Keri recipe you used for the batter? Have a blessed day!
Thank you.
Very cool!
Thank you.
You are not kidding, that iron has got to be smoking hot. Got my Great American Waffle iron two days ago and have finally got the stove burner dialed in for great waffles. It is a very high quality kitchen tool I bought a not perfect iron and the only flaw I can find is a tiny underfill near the edge. You have really high quality control. Thanks!
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Most of my cast iron is from the Lodge Factory seconds section and they have small flaws. It doesn't effect the way it cooks though. Usually it isn't even noticeable but the price is a lot cheaper and I like that. This waffle iron is one of my favorite cast iron pieces though.
What did your sister think about the waffles?! Appreciate the instructions too!
She enjoyed them. Thanks for stopping by.
That waffle looks good.
Thank you.
That is an awesome waffle iron
Thank you. I'm enjoying it.
This is giving me the urge to go hunting for a waffle iron. Dammit. 😁
I'm enjoying it. It would be great on your stove.
Look no further! Buy American. I have one. It's fantastic!
How crispy are these? Is it better to butter or oil the iron for crispier waffles?
These were crispy around the edges but that was it. A hot iron and thinner batter makes for crispier waffles. I ended up getting a digital infrared thermometer so I could check the temp of the iron before putting the batter in. I do a thinner batter when making crispy waffles. I'm not sure if butter or oil makes a difference. I know butter starts to burn above 350 degrees. I'm usually cooking for the family when I bring out the waffle iron, so I am making a big batch. They get put in the oven while I'm cooking the next waffle. They always come out of the oven crispy. I hope this helps.
BobbiTingles!
Thanks Scully.
Doctor schmoctor. They call it a "practice" for a reason - they're practicing on you.
Yep.
Bobbi Jo, I was traveling for work, sitting at a restaurant when I saw this. T H A N K Y O U S O M U C H. I love seeing these unsolicited viedeos when they pop up. You are great!
You're welcome and thank you for creating such an amazing waffle iron. I'm having so much fun with it. I get so many compliments on the patriotic theme. It is a work of art.
Pam cooking spray? Your doctor should tell you to avoid that
