Had a burgundy one. 305 4spd. No air. No radio no nothing! Red interior. Very fast after some minor mods. 373 gears stock. Put true dual exhaust on it . $8267.74 out the door in February 1981. Great memories
Steve, you forgot to mention the Sammy Hagar cassette and the Pioneer 6 × 9's in back deck.
I know from personal experience (back in the late 80s) that a 427 big block from a 69 Corvette wakes an 81 Camaro right up.
Lol, I BELIEVE! My first job at 16, at a Parts Store and the quiet manager drives in a Blue ‘79-‘81 Blue Z28 outfitted with a L-88 spec 427, 4 Speed with 4:56. Obviously he could tell that he had my attention.
After work he took me around the block. When people mention stories about a $Bill on the Dash and not being able to GET TO IT, this memory applies!
Soon after I purchased a ‘78 Calais with a 305, factory Saginaw 4 Speed, installing a 396 on the 305 mounts, moving the shift tower back 4-5” for a M-21, also installing the 12 Bolt sourced from the same ‘69 SS396 Chevelle, which was slightly wider, backing plate to backing plate.
THAT ONE RIDE had me chasing BB Chevys for years…
Lolol!!! I bet wake it up!!!!
I just bought an '81 Z28 with the 350. The smog stuff is gone, it came without air. Has full length headers, true 3" dual exhaust. It has an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake and a 750 Holley with vac secondaries. The thing runs like a Timex. I love it.
Glad to see this video was redone and corrected after a group of us pointing out the errors on the first presentation.
I had a 1978 Z28 I bought with no engine, but had a Borg Warner Super T10 4spd Trans. I installed a 1967 396 big block. Ran strong !
The knowledge you have on instant recall awes and astounds.
Hi Steve, up until the early ‘70s here in Australia we had no speed limit on the open road so our local muscle cars were made for high speed touring. Bear in mind that we had no highway system like the US - just rough country roads and many of them were badly corrugated gravel. We hit a big red kangaroo at 120 mph one night and destroyed the car. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must have been to be limited to 55mph particularly considering the cars you guys had at your disposal. Keep up the good work mate.
In the mid 80's I had a new 1986 Z28 t-top and the following year I had to have the 87 IROC 5.7 t-top. Both were great cars and kept both of them. Had a lot of fun with these Z28's back in the 80's.
IROC-Z!!!! 🤘🏻😃🤘🏻
There are no t-top 350 tpi cars
Back in 1979 those T-Tops were known to leak really bad. I ordered a 1979 Z-28 exactly how I wanted. Most important thing was NO T-Tops.
Yes they were well known for leaking. It was one thing you knew was going to happen sooner or later.
In the 90’s a high school a friend of mine had a 79 z28, that thing couldn’t even do a burnout.
I love it... Steve reads the comments on these videos that is cool good job Steve I'm very proud of you for taking your original video regarding this car down you were getting roasted really badly in the comments on it regarding the authenticity of that car I have to say I have to say I'm proud of you for reading our comments. Also it was pretty cool to me because in your 1st video about this car I'm the one who mentioned the black line and the tail lights that you made a mention of in this video
only if we could go back in time, i had many camaros, 1970 .5 SS ( split front bumper), 1978 Z28, 2- 1980 Z28, 1985 Z28, and a 1984 Trans AM, loved them all.
The surface discoloration in the trunk sure looks like rust to me.
4:36 looks like runs in the paint on the right side of the trunk near the hinge
One friend had 79 w/ Hurst Hatches in blue and another friend had a black 79 4spd. Both cars were mildly built and we saw 130mph on more than one occasion.
Had a 79 T/A and of course, i opened up the panels on the hood scoop so it was semi-functional.
You should check out the Z28s that raced in Australian 'Groupe C Touring Cars' in the early 1980s.
Beautiful car. I had a black 81 z28 in high school and it was my favorite car of all time.
Ya gotta find ma a 62 comet. With the cat eye tail lights. Thats my dream car mag
Barf. Wasn’t a fan of the 80-81 Z’s. Didn’t like the hood treatment or the horizontal bars in the grill. Pass on the 305 as well. 1979 was the best year for the eurothane bumpered gen 2’s. Side note; the shaker hoods on 75 and later T/A’s were not fake. They were just blocked off. You could easily cut out the block off plate and have a functional shaker hood.
You oughta buy up that machine Stevie!!!
Wow, someone actually opted for a slower engine than base---that blows my mind. That's like someone wanting a '68 Road Runner, but in place of the base 383 they'd rather have a 318
Gas was expensive that year and 305 got significantly higher mpg than 350. Reason I went for 229.
Wow never knew they had the 305 with a 4 speed this year. Great package with the t-tops too.
Nice Steve! I had a 77
Had a 81’ White with blue 350 auto. 79’ white w/orange 350 4 speed.
Graduated 1980. Liked these. Stuck with 70 nova. But? Swapped 327,4brl and Saginaw 4 speed, Hurst shifter. Until woman made illegal left turn. Total. 😿🙀
Am a hardcore 68 Chevelle guy, but had to get two of the 71 SS RS Camaros
Nice looking ride anyway.
Very cool looking Z!!!!!!!!!!
Cool Z28 ~ ♪
The 81 Z pulls at my heart
Nice car, great walk around.
Beautiful!
The manual transmission could not handle the few extra H.P. the 350 had. Had same problem in 3rd gen Camaros also.
The other thing he should have mentioned was you could double the horsepower of these cars for a few hundred dollars, or just bolt in a big block. The 70-73 had an optional 396.
love my 1980 camaro mine has a camed 350 with a 2 speed powerglide transmission. It will do burn outs.
I had ordered one with a 350 4sp, when it came into the dealer it had the 305 in it, I was told the GM mandate for 1981 was you couldn't get a 350 with a 4sp transmission!1981 was the first year for the computer!
Got a buddy who's got his dad's 1976 RS Camaro with only 200 miles on it. Very nice car it is.
The one thing he left out was the optional aluminum wheels ,you could also get them in A almost black also And the first year with A computer and metric 350 trans with lock up converter.
I've had several 3rd generation f-bodies but always wanted a 2nd gen. Prices are going up and up... might have missed my window!
Had an "81 Z/28 white w/blue and T-Tops. I could pop the drivers side T-Top and lower it down behind the seat into the rear floor board at a stop light. Very useful move. 😃Loved the car, not the engine so much. Especially after the '85 5.0 Mustangs came out.
You could only get a 4 spd with a 305 in the USA. Canadian Camaros could gets. 4 spd with 350. It was emissions BS in the US.
Not sure why I didn’t buy one of these new back in the day.
I learned to drive on a exact clone of that car. Good memories.
All good stuff except ,1975 and 1976 Chevy built 0 ,Z28s , but the rest good stuff very informative.thanks.
How the mighty have fallen 🙄
Memories
I bought a brand new 81 Camaro with that 305 motor but it wasn't a Z28. It was a special order with the Z28 undercarriage but a plain Jane body with absolutely no badges, not even "Camaro" or spoiler. The buyer couldn't come up with the money so I was able to buy it at a steep discount. I actually gave it away free to a brother-in-law. Who knew?
Got the Same exact car with 350
Thing is in immaculate shape, but that car must be a dog with a 305 in it, I owned a TA with a 305 and it was slow as hell. All show no go.
@@jeffreyknecht5230 My car was pure stock other than a flowmaster exhaust added. So maybe 160 hp on it tops. I believe the 0-60 time on those TAs were around 9 seconds. So yeah, it was pretty damn slow, even by 80s standards. My next car was a 87 Mustang LX with a 5.0, had a Hurst 5-speed, straight pipes with no catalytic convertor, THAT car was quick, even if it wasn't as pretty as the TA. Felt like I went from driving a Cavalier to a Corvette.
165 ponies that's pathetic..
I had 1981 silver anniversary model never broke down no t tops on mine
Whats the price???
A dollar a gallon 🤣 here in the united of kingdoms we now pay $2 per Litre
"that worked out real well" - lol
With that speedometer swap, do we know the actual mileage on it? #WorldsFastestCourier
1980,s Smog US so called muscle cars, most were under 200hp, today you buy a 2ltr Mitsubishi with more than 200hp standard!!
Love it
How much = ask price?
Put whatever can you want, it won't matter. A 305 can't breath.
Properly optioned but it's white.
It's $39,995
As it sits,easy $761K
Oh no, it's worth at least 2 million! lol
Speedo swap and cam on a 7,000 mile car? Why. I like it though.
165 hp my Camry has 155 hp
Quadra-dog 😄
305 is a turd and for the record the trans am could run circles around the Camaro especially when the ws6 was ordered
Not in 1980 or 1981 when they no longer had the 400 and had that anemic 301T engine. At least you could mod a 350.
@@gmls1144 you would need to modify it as in stock form the rated go was roughly 165! A dog. Today’s Toyota will blow it away
@@marcmenton8063 190 in 80 and 175 in 81. It’s not really comparable to any car that is 40 years newer. I’ll still tackle an old school sbc 350 over any other engine of the time.
@@gmls1144 you are entitled to your opinion and drive a turd if you wish I’ll take a ws6 trans am any day
Also the Trans Am were notoriously high geared.
These cars looked great but were a real slug. 0-60 in 10.5 and quarter mile times of 17.8 the cheapest KIA is faster. That's what government regulations did to GM in the 80's.
It's not bad, but it looks like"""Barbies Z/28""""
Junk
U look alot like Bob sagg
I bought a black 1978 Z-28 with that 350 and it was so fun, but I couldn’t keep my foot out of it and received three tickets in less than a year! I was a young punk and my dad sold it and bought me a Datsun 210. 🥲
