3rd and 4th gen Camaros are finally having their day in the sun. For the longest time they were right up there with the C4 Corvette as the backside of every joke because mullet-maned pilots would thrash them to a destructive end. 1988-1992 cars always seemed like the product of corporate purgatory. They lost the IROC deal to Dodge in 1990. As the 90s started the public was looking forward and the 80s angles didn't hit quite the same. I'd love to see an in depth on a 1LE although finding one to get intimate with is a tall order.

I had an 89 v6 5 speed with the 2.8 Liter V6, but it was MPFI, and that thing was fast with the stick. I got rid of the sticks when cell phone showed up, too hard to drive and talk, didnt have hands free yet. Same color as this one and I did drive it everywhere, as I was traveling engineer, New Orleans, Michigan, Pittsburgh, couldnt kill it.

Hey Steve-O, once again you're spot-on fella' ! That base 2.5 litre powerplant was an absolute DOG exacerbated by the weight of these Camaro models. These Chevrolet models quite literally could not get out of the their own way. To add insult to injury the gas mileage increase on this four cylinder option was definitely minimal. In closing, the cost savings and the exterior appearance package wasn't close to being good enough. Hope this helps homey ! 🚘🔍 ------- 👎

I had one of these in white. With the T-tops off, a whirlwind of dust and paper would form over the passenger seat. The soft-latching mechanism on the rear hatch would randomly release and the hatch would open while driving. Hitting a bump or driving faster would cause it to re-latch.

I always thought the RS was a good deal. I sold Fords in 1989, and the Mustang had nothing to compete with the RS. That year, with Ford, you either had a V8 GT or a four-banger base model, not even a V6. The RS gave the buyer a V8 at a very cheap price.

Yes, 1991 model year with the VIN for the win: 1G1 for US made Chevrolet, FP for Camaro, 2 for two door coupe, 3 for manual seat belts and driver's air bag, E for 5.0L (305 CID) V8 with TBI, aka RPO code "L03", aka "Slow and Steady", 9 is a check digit, M for the 1991 model year, L for Van Nuys, CA assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Van Nuys, CA plant closed in 1992 and was one of the "Terrible Three" of the GM system with poor quality. All F body cars after August 1987 through the end of the 1992 model year were assembled at Van Nuys. After that from 1993 to 2002, they were assembled at St. Therese, Quebec Canada.
We got the SPID, glad you did: 1FP87 for Chevrolet (1) Camaro (FP) sport coupe (87), AJ3 for driver's supplemental restraint (air bag), AR9 for reclining front bucket seats, B34 and B35 for front and rear floor mats, carpeted, B84 for bodyside molding ornamentation, CC1 for removable hatch roof panels, C49 for rear window defogger, C60 for air conditioning, D35 for outside sport mirrors, remote control and painted, D80 for rear spoiler, F41 for firm ride suspension, GU4 for 3.08:1 rear axle ratio, J41 for power brakes, front disc and rear drum, cast iron, K60 for 100 amp alternator, L03 for 5.0L (305 CID) V8 with TBI, MM5 for five speed manual transmission merchandising option, M39 for Borg-Warner five speed manual transmission, NA5 for Federal emissions, NK3 for simulated leather steering wheel, N96 for 16x8 cast aluminum wheels, QMT for P235/55R16 black wall tires, UB3 for oil, temperature, volts, tachometer and trip odometer cluster, UN6 for AM-FM stereo radio with cassette and ETR, UQ1 for stereo radio provisions, U79 for four speaker system, VAN for Van Nuys, CA assembly, VK3 for front license plate bracket, V73 for US/Canada vehicle statement, Y86 for Camaro "RS" merchandising package, 17P for Silver wheels, 19B for Black cloth interior trim, 19I for Black interior trim, 19Q for Black moldings, 199 for Black seat belts, 41U for Black exterior paint, among other codes.
Not correct. Not every 3rd generation (and no 2nd generation) F body cars have SPID labels, only those from 1984 and up. Trucks started earlier with SPIDs, but GM passenger cars started in 1984. Prior to that a build sheet (or other OEM literature) is needed to determine all installed options. Correct, the 2.5L four-cylinder engine was available from 1982-1986 in the "F" body cars.

These cars looked great fun to drive low to the ground needed nothing visual that factory didn't already give it. Sadly they didn't hold up great , rusted bad in the Midwest the transmissions weak and the engines didn't hold up great for long. Many of my friends had these while I went with the fox body. I still have my fox that runs amazing don't know anyone anymore that still has one and it's rare to see one out and if u do there very rough.
